COMMEMORATING

9/11 TEN YEARS LATER

South Shore Arts will commemorate the tenth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, with New York, September 11th by Magnum Photographers, an exhibition of 42 color and black-and-white photographs, photo tapestries, light boxes and a large-scale, freestanding photo triptych, which will be presented in the gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts from August 7 through September 18, 2011. A special commemorative event, including music and spoken word, will be presented in the gallery on Sunday, September 11, from 1 to 3pm.

By now, the story of September 11, 2001, has been burned into our collective memory, but few have seen New York from the perspective of Magnum photographers. On that tragic morning, eleven members of the legendary photo agency immediately dispersed from their monthly meeting in New York to document the events as they unfolded, risking their own lives to record the incomprehensible. Their photographs, by turns haunting, surreal, and

ARTWORK INSPIRED BY 9/11

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and to coin-cide with the exhibit New York, September 11th by Magnum Photos, South Shore Arts is inviting artists to submit work for a unique exhibition of art that was inspired or created in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The work is not to be new work, but, rather, work that was created at the time, in direct response to the events on and surrounding that day.

The work will be on display in the Atrium gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts from August 12 through October 9, 2011. Due to space limitations, 2-D work can be no larger than four feet in either direction and sculptural 3-D work can be no larger than two feet in either direction. Please submit a digital image (e-mail or on disk) no later than July 1, 2011, to be considered for this exhibition opportunity.

The Exhibit Committee will convene in mid-July to review and jury all submissions. Artists will be notified by July 18, 2011, as to whether work has been accepted for the exhibit. From the photographers’ various vantage points, viewers will be transported to Ground Zero to witness the destruction of the World Trade Center and the buildings’ implosion that sent thousands fleeing from debris through the streets and their exodus out of lower Manhattan. Documented also is the photographers’ return to the scene and their quiet observation and respect for the rescue workers, whose jobs had only just begun, and for the mourners who had been gathering, struck with grief. As a tribute to the World Trade Center’s noted place in history, New York, September 11th, also includes some of the most beloved photographs of the Twin Towers taken by Magnum over the last quarter century.

Summer Exhibit features Work by Michael Chelich and the Chicago Art SalonSouth Shore Arts will present Reassembled: Works by Michael Chelich and the Chicago Art Salon in the gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, June 12 through July 31, 2011. The exhibit will showcase the artwork of Munster-based artist Michael Chelich, Chicago figurative artist Bruno Surdo and artist members of the Chicago Art Salon.

Michael Chelich will exhibit a wide variety of subject matter including still life, portraiture, landscapes, figurative art and wildlife. Included in the show will be his nightmarish and massive allegorical figurative painting Monolith. In contrast to Monolith is his more tender and familial painting Imaginary 17th Century Family Portrait, which features two courtly dogs and three girls dressed in the ornate aristocratic garb of a bygone era. Several dramatic landscapes of the Indiana Dunes and numerous classically inspired portraits of men, women and children will also be included. Michael is represented by the Steeple Gallery in St. John.

For most of the artists in this exhibit, their shared educational background in art began at the School of Representational Art (SORA). SORA director Bruno Surdo founded the school in 1992 and brought Michael on board as an instructor that same year. Originally located on the north side of Chicago, SORA later moved to River North, where it has continued its mission of training artists in the traditional methods of drawing and painting for the last 22 years. SORA’s method of training painters stretches back to the atelier of the 18th century Neo-Classical painter Jacques-Louis David. This training has strengthened the drawing and painterly skills of these contemporary artists, in addition to enhancing their conceptual capacities in the creation of evocative and meaningful imagery.

In 2002, after the completion of their training at SORA, the Chicago-based artists Craig Blietz, Shar Coulson, Amy Lloyd, Gail Potocki, Brian Sindler and Meltem Aktas formed the Chicago Art Salon for the purpose of remaining connected, while simultaneously pursuing their individual artistic paths. The members take inspiration from symbolism, figurativism and contemporary realism to create compelling and powerfully expressive paintings.

Artist members in the Chicago Art Salon are all former students of Michael Chelich at SORA. Their reunion reveals the common roots of the exhibiting artists and also demonstrates how they have uniquely reassembled the basic lessons they were taught in their shared traditional background to yield their own unique artistic style. An artist reception for this exhibit will be held on Sunday, June 12, from 1-3pm. The event is free and open to the public.

South Shore Arts celebrated the 67th anniversary of the annual Salon Show, January 9 through March 27, 2011. Exhibit juror Lanny Silverman awarded $10,000 in prizes, thanks to the generosity of many longtime and several new donors. In addition to the $2,000 Helen V. Surovek Memo-rial Award donated by Judy and Tom Surovek, a new $1,500 award in memory of Renee & Sam Denmark was donated by Tracy & Mark Schwimmer.

Educational opportunities abound for teachers and their students at South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony with everything from field trips to classroom-based programs offered at every age level each school year.

Toot ’n Doodle takes place in November at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. The program

introduces second and third grade students to the four instrument families and gives them a chance meet and work with musicians as they “play” the musical instruments. South Shore Arts instructors assist students in completing a music-inspired art project. The two-hour program meets Indiana State Standards in music and art.

The annual Education Concert, held at the Star Plaza Theater in Merrillville

every fall provides an opportunity for elementary and middle school students to attend a live orchestral music performance. Program guides contain information about the music and composers, as well as lesson plans related to the music that meet state standards for music, language arts, social studies, art, math and science.

Rhythm ’n Hues uses the story of The Little Red Hen to demonstrate to first and second grader students rhythm patterns in language and music. Students try numerous percussion instruments and, in the visual art component, create their own. This program provides two hours of music, art and creativity at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in April.

South Shore Arts has developed several arts-based literacy programs for the elementary classroom that meet Indiana State Standards. These one-hour programs are conducted in the classroom with all supplies provided. A copy of the book used in each program is included for each classroom to keep and use in the language arts curriculum.

Polar Express workshops take place in first grade classrooms during November and December. Students are invited to wear pajamas to school on the day they create an art project based on Chris Van Allsburg’s beautifully illustrated children’s book The Polar Express. Using shapes to construct a polar landscape and train, students follow step-by-step instructions to complete an art project inspired by the book.

The Skin You Live In is a unique program for second graders that develops literacy skills through a message of friendship, social acceptance, and diversity. Using jaunty rhyme and colorful, quirky illustrations, the book celebrates the ways in which we are all different and yet the same. The book was written by Chicago-based author Michael Tyler, illustrated by Hammond native David Lee Csicsko, and published by Chicago Children’s Museum.

Michael Recycle is a third-grade program that expands literacy proficiencies as it encourages children to care for the earth by recycling. Written by Ellie Bethel and illustrated by Alexandra Colombo, the book uses humor and verse to tell the adventures of a young superhero whose powers allow him to teach people about recycling and being “green.”

Puppet shows, presented annually by South Shore Arts in the theatre at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, feature acclaimed puppeteers Jim West and Jeremy Wingle. The pair uses a variety of puppetry styles to show children of all ages how to create their own puppets out of simple materials found around the house. Jim and Jeremy return to the Center every year in March in their hilariously educational one-hour shows, based on Aesop’s Fables, How the Elephant Got His Tail, the history of dinosaurs and other stories loaded with wit and charm. The show is an especially

South Shore Arts is home to four exhibit spaces in Munster, Hammond and Crown Point. Teachers can bring students to South Shore Arts galleries throughout the year at no charge. Visit the South Shore Arts Web site for a complete schedule or to book a tour.

Our 2011-12 blockbuster exhibit will be American Pop, featuring artwork by Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Indiana, Red Grooms, Richard Lindner, Audrey Flack, Claes Oldenburg, Marisol, and Chryssa among others. The exhibit will be presented November 20, 2011, through January 29, 2012, in the main gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. Teachers may request a docent-led tour of the exhibit, which features artists who looked at ordinary and mundane subject matter—shop signs, road signs, comics and cartoons, packaging, and mass media imagery—with a sense of irreverence and humor. This is a great opportunity for students of all ages!

The annual Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Exhibition, held during April and May at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, awards up to $7,500 in prizes and scholarships. Teachers who want to showcase their student’s art should call Gallery Manager Mary McClelland for complete details and learn how to enter.

The Symphony offers students from Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, Newton and Starke counties or students taking instrumental or voice lessons from a private teacher

residing or teaching in those counties the opportunity to audition for a performance with the Symphony. Winners will play their piece at a concert as determined by the Music Director. Auditions take place in May.

MEET THESE SOUTH SHORE ARTS BOARD MEMBERS

Bruce Quint has served on the South Shore Arts Board of Directors since 2008. Bruce is a financial advisor and Resident Director of Merrill Lynch in Merrillville. Born in Russell, Kansas, and raised in Nebraska, Bruce graduated from the United States Military Academy

at West Point, New York, in 1983. He spent 10 years on Active Duty and 14 years in the Army Reserve. In 2003 he deployed in the initial phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Bruce received his MBA with an emphasis in finance and is a Certified Financial Manager. He joined the South Shore Arts Board to help continue to grow the organization’s regional arts initiatives through his experience in demo-graphics and development. Bruce is active in the commu-nity as a Director for the Porter County Family Counseling Center and as a board member of the Andrean Foundation. While always an avid golfer, the region has turned him into a White Sox and Blackhawks fan. Bruce and his wife Donna, who is a member of the Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony, have two daughters and live in Valparaiso.

Seda Turan-Yahne joined the South Shore Arts Board of Directors in 2008. She is a graphic designer, owner and creative director of Design Studio 303, Inc., located in Hammond with a branch location in Chicago. Seda graduated from Indiana University with a degree

in Fine Arts. She became involved with South Shore Arts as a member of the annual Beaux Arts Ball committee and has been a co-chair of the event for the past two years.

An artist herself who enjoys painting in her spare time, Seda is committed to furthering arts education opportu-nities for children and youth in Northwest Indiana. She participated in art classes at South Shore Arts when she was growing up and truly appreciates the importance of continued support of the arts in the community. Other ser-vice involvement has included Ada S. McKinley Community Services, Inc. and Special Olympics in Chicago, along with the Boys & Girls Club of Hammond and the United Way. Seda and her husband Scott, a partner in the law firm Efron, Efron & Yahne in Hammond, have two sons and live in St. John.

Sandi Kozlowski spent six years on the South Shore Arts board in the 1990s and was welcomed back to the board in 2008. Sandi is an artist and volunteer in the community with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Calumet College. Her company, SLK Designs, specializes

in 3-D and painting commissions. Sandi’s artwork has been featured and garnered awards in the annual Salon Show.

Sandi started with the Exhibit Committee in 1993 and became co-chair with Bruce Cegur from 1995-1998. Cur-rently, she is a member of the Exhibits and Beaux Arts Ball committees. Sandi re-joined the board to help raise aware-ness and money in the community for South Shore Arts. She is a member of the Chicago Artists Coalition and the Union Street Gallery. She volunteers for the Westminster Presbyte-rian Church and loves reading, jet-skiing, Body Combat and Body Pump workouts. She also works in customer service with her husband Ed at the Ed Kozlowski State Farm Insur-ance Agency in Schererville and is a substitute teacher at Munster High School. Ed and Sandi live in Munster and have two daughters.

Dan Nita joined the South Shore Arts Board of Directors in 2010. Dan has been with Caesars Entertainment (parent company of Horseshoe) for sixteen years. He came to Northwest Indiana in 2009 to become the Senior Vice-President and General Manager of Horseshoe Casino,

Hammond, where he is responsible for day to day casino operations and long term strategic growth of the new 500 million dollar Horseshoe Casino. Prior to this position, he served as the Mid-Atlantic Regional President.

Dan is a recipient of the prestigious Corporate Excel-lence Award from Caesars for leading his property, Harrah’s New Orleans, through the Hurricane Katrina disaster. He brings to South Shore Arts his long-term personal commit-ment and interest in the arts and his expertise in finance, strategic planning and analysis. Dan has an MBA from New York University, graduated magna cum laude from Clemson with a BS in Finance and studied abroad at Oxford. He is active in the community serving on the boards of the Crisis Center, the Northwest Indiana Forum and the NWI Times Board of Economists. Dan resides in Northwest Indiana with his wife and two daughters.

The magic of Disney movies comes alive as the Northwest Indiana Symphony and conductor Kirk Muspratt present “Disney in Concert,” Thursday, May 19, at 7:30pm, at the Star Plaza Theatre. Every generation has its favorite Disney movie, and this family-friendly evening features favorite Disney tunes sung by Disney guest vocalists.

Selected music includes songs from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aladdin, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Mary Poppins and Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s a small world after all when mouseketeers of all ages join together for memorable moments and melodies. Video clips and still photos from the films will be projected above the orchestra.

“This is such a family type of concert,” says Maestro Muspratt, “Where mom and dad can enjoy going out with their children and sharing a quality evening together. This show is a wonderful way to introduce children to orchestral music with songs that are familiar and entertaining.

“There is something joyful and touching in this program for people of all ages—everything from A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes from Cinderella to Be Our Guest from Beauty and the Beast to Circle of Life from The Lion King.”

Adult tickets range from $20 to $60, and children’s tickets are just $10!

The 2011 South Shore Summer Music Festival will feature five free concerts by the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra in communities across Northwest Indiana during the month of July. Everyone is welcome to come early, bring lawn chairs and blankets, sit back and relax and enjoy the music!

“Our desire at the Symphony is to be a part of every adult and child’s summer, to contribute to the quality of life in our area and to be involved in the very fabric of our communities,” says Symphony Conductor Kirk Muspratt, creator of the Music Festival. “With our Summer Festival, we hope to contribute not only to the cultural and entertainment life in Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland, but also to boost tourism and the awareness of our unique, wonderful region.”

This year’s concerts will have something for everyone, with the orchestra featuring patriotic crowd-pleasers along with contemporary favorites and music from Broadway musicals and movies. Maestro Muspratt will also preview music from the Symphony’s exciting 2011-2012 season. The South Shore Summer Music Festival will be presented at the following locations:
