SOUTH SIDE HIGH SCHOOL January 2019 Dear Parents and Students:
On behalf of the faculty and staff of South Side High School, I extend our best wishes for a wonderful New
Year.
Below, you will find information on the upcoming midterm exams, along with the schedule for the exams.
Please be sure to encourage your child to prepare for midterms and, if needed, to attend extra help.
In addition to important information regarding examinations, this newsletter is filled with the
outstanding accomplishments of our South Side students. We are proud of our South Siders, and I
know that you will be impressed by their accomplishments.
Once again our best wishes for the New Year. May it be filled with good health, peace and joy.
Sincerely,
John Murphy Principal
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT MID YEAR EXAMINATIONS
Please note the day and time of your child’s examinations. In addition to the mid-term exam schedule, you will
find the all-purpose route bus schedule for this week in the pages that follow.
During examinations, we will adhere to the following procedures:
School will open 20 minutes before the exams are scheduled. The south main entrance will be the only open
entrance to the building. Students must leave the building through the same doors upon completion of the
examination.
There will be no food service available between morning and afternoon sessions, and students must leave the
campus. If a student is unable to leave campus or will not have a break between exams, because they need to
take multiple exams (ie. exams in the conflict room), student should bring lunch.
Student lockers will be sealed immediately after classes on January 18th. That afternoon, students will be
unable to open their lockers again until January 29, 2019. Under no circumstances will they be opened.
No backpacks, pocketbooks, cell phones, smart watches, ipods or ipads are to be brought to school. These
items will be confiscated if they are brought into school. Items needed for examination including pens, pencils,
etc. should be kept in a pocket or carried in a clear plastic bag.
If you plan on picking up your child at the end of the exams, please pre-arrange for a meeting time and place.
Please be sure that your child studies and prepares for these important examinations. Extra help zero period is
available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. In addition, the homework helpers program takes
place after school in the library.
Please remind your son/daughter that cell phones and smart watches are not permitted in the
school during midterm and final exams. If they bring a cell phone or smart watch into the
building during the exam period: (1) it will be confiscated and a parent will need to pick it up (2)
your son/daughter will receive a detention. Our attendance office cannot “check in” cell phones
during exams because during some exam sessions over 700 students are tested. Please know that
your son/daughter may use the phones in all offices if they need to contact you. We thank you in
advance for your cooperation. Please also note that our cafeteria is closed.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT SO CALLED “CUT DAYS”
Attendance is critically important to academic success. Unfortunately, some students believe that they
are entitled to participate in “Cut Days.” If your child tells you it is okay to not attend school because
the class is engaging in a “Cut Day,” please tell them to attend school. Such days are not permitted.
We expect your child to be in school unless they meet the criteria included in the school handbook, such
as: illness, legal obligations and verified college visit for seniors. Participation in a “Cut Day” will
result in disciplinary action and could have an academic penalty if tests or other assessments are being
given that day.
IMPORTANT IPAD INFORMATION iPads continue to play an increasingly important role in instruction. Students need to have their ipad
with them and ready to use for all classes. Students who repeatedly misplace their ipads will be
counseled by an administrator and may face disciplinary action.
COMPACT TEAM
I am happy to announce that South Side again has an active Compact Team. Members for the 2018-
2019 Compact Team are: Students: Isabelle Abate, Josh Erazo, Leah DeVito, Shannon Bender,
Hugh Rosshirt. Parents: Ann Marie Hendry, Patty Leake, Alanna Bender. Teachers: Katie
Clarke, Cristie Tursi, and Herb Weiss.
NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS
It is my pleasure to announce that two students from South Side High School were named as
semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Anthony DeFalco and Alison
McWalters will now have an opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.
NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS It is also my pleasure to announce that three students were named National Merit Commended Students.
They are Andrew Beatty, Samantha Cosgrove and Samantha Ying.
Commended students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their
performance on the PSAT Qualifying Test. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout
the nation have been recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not
continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among
the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the
2017 Preliminary SAT/NMSQT exam.
HOBY LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
This year’s South Side High School representatives to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY)
Conference will be Karen Hansen and Sofia Romanello. HOBY is a national organization that
sponsors leadership seminars in the United States and around the world. It is designed to take young
leaders, like Karen and Sofia, and further their leadership potential.
Karen volunteers as a teaching assistant, and has attended numerous service trips through the
Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She is also Treasurer of the Bethany Buddies Club where she
volunteers her time to help provide support and raise money for young families. Sofia is the Vice
President of her class, and is an active member of several clubs, activities, and sports including Athletes
Helping Athletes, Women’s Club, Debate Club, Cancer Awareness Club, Italian Club, Context, and
Girls Soccer. Both Karen and Sofia hope to take what they learn from the HOBY Leadership
Conference to make their school and community a better place.

PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD NOMINEE
The Prudential Spirit of Community Award was created in 1995 to recognize students who have
demonstrated exemplary community service. This prestigious award, sponsored by Prudential Financial
in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, is presented annually on
the local, state and national levels. This year’s nominees are Shannon Bender
and Connor Giovanniello, seniors at South Side High School. We wish them well as the process
continues.
DRAMA DEPARTMENT
Congratulations to the cast and crew of this year’s fall drama, Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET.
The cast distinguished themselves magnificently both in their acting and in their mastery of the
challenging language. The cast included Ciara McDonald as Juliet, Nicholas Pandolfo as Romeo, as
well as Grace Woythaler, Aline McEntee, Frankie DeRiso, Drew Beatty, Katherine Quinn, Maya
Jefferson, and many more. This year both lighting and costume design were by current seniors, Emma
Wills-Umdenstock and Melissa Aliotta, respectively. We also had a crackerjack production team who
kept things running smoothly behind the scenes.
Over 100 students participated as cast and crew members in five Student Directed plays on January 4th
and 5th. All of the performances were directed and designed by members of the senior IB Theater
class. The evening was a wonderful mix of comedy, drama and musical entertainment.
This year’s musical will be The Secret Garden based on the children’s classic by Frances Hodgson
Burnett. The musical's script and lyrics are by Marsha Norman, with music by Lucy Simon. The
winner of 5 Tony Awards in 1991, the musical is a moving and poignant story of loss and rebirth - and
the enduring power of love. The Secret Garden will come to life on the South Side stage on April
11th, 12th and 13th.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
“Where words fail, music speaks.”- Hans Christian Anderson
IB Music Night was held on October 26th in the auditorium. Student compositions and performances
were featured, both of which are part of IB Assessments.
Melissa Aliotta, Julia DeLuca, and Elisabeth Redmond were selected to represent South Side at
NYSSMA’s All-State Winter Conference in Rochester, NY. They performed in All State concerts at the
Eastman Kodak in December.
The RVC Annual Tree Lighting was held on November 29th at the Village Green, where members of
the Band and Chorus led by Mr. Barry LeBron and Brianna Brickman provided a host of holiday
music. Winter concerts were held on December 18th and 21st, culminating four months of music
learning.
The Chamber Singers performed for the patients and staff at South Nassau Communities Hospital on
December 21nd after caroling at South Side Middle School and the Administration building. They also
spent an afternoon singing at the Sandel Center with the Intergenerational Sharing Conference on
December 12th.
Looking ahead, more than 30 students will represent South Side in the All County Music Festivals at
the Tilles Center on the weekend of January 13th, 2019.
Rockville Centre’s District Jazz Concert will be held at SSMS at 7:00 PM on February 7th.
6
Julia DeLuca, Jamie Hatter, and Lauren Moro will represent Rockville Centre in the American
Choral Director’s Association Eastern Division Honors Choirs in Kansas City, MO in March.
All-District concerts will be held during Music in Our Schools Month. The first All-District concert
will be for the orchestras on March 12th, with the bands on March 14th, and the choruses on March 18th.
All concerts will begin at 7 pm at South Side Middle School.
The Alumni Concert will be held on Monday, June 19th this year at SSMS. Any alumni who would
like to perform are welcome. Please email [email protected] for more information or join the
RVC Music Alumni Facebook Group.
SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
This year the South Side science research group has been both busy and productive. There have been
15 different competitions in which our students participated. These are some of the students that earned
awards and were not recognized for their achievements as of the previous newsletter.
Our Robotics Team earned second place at the Robotics competition on Saturday January 5th. This
victory will give our robot from RVC an opportunity to compete against others at the N.Y. State
competition.

New York State Science Honor Society
Forty-eight South Side High School students were inducted to the NYS Science Honor Society.
Other Science Competitions on the Horizon
South Side High School will compete at National Science Bowl at Brookhaven National Lab
South Side students will be competing in the following fairs: Research Association Science
Fair, Long Island Science Congress, JSHS, Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, DNA
day, and the Molloy Science Fair.
Students will also be attending lectures at NYU for the World Science Festival. As well as the
Museum of Natural History.
Once again this year our Science Department is working in conjunction with the New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation and the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and aquarium,
on a project entitled “Trout in the Classroom.” Our students are hatching brown trout from the eggs till
maturity to be released along with brook trout in approved local waters this spring.
SADD
This year, Students Against Destructive Decisions raised awareness about the dangers of drugs and
alcohol during Red Ribbon Week. We collaborated with the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island
to present the dangers of tobacco use for The Great American Smoke Out. The Family Fun Fitness
Fair in October was a major collaboration of the RVC Drug, Alcohol, and Violence Prevention Task
Force, Rockville Centre Coalition for Youth and the RVC Youth Council. The SADD club
continuously collaborates with the RVC Youth Council on all social and recreational activities
sponsored by them including a bowling night, dodgeball night, and community service opportunities.
We also helped with the organization of the Fall Parent Presentation.
YOUTH DECIDE
Youth Decide students are members of SADD who also are peer drug educators. As such, they sign a
leadership agreement to remain drug/alcohol and tobacco free. These students are trained in facilitating
discussions regarding tobacco/drug prevention for students in grades 5-8. Youth Decide will be making
presentations at Hewitt, Riverside, Watson, Wilson, Covert and the Middle School.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Fifteen students were inducted into the National Honor Society on October 23rd. They were: Connor
Alfano, Nicholas Bradley, Ryan Collins, Michael Facenda, Michael Fennessy, Riley Ford, Dylan
Gennosa, Dylan Harloff, Erblina Haxhnikaj, James Hennessey, Maya Jefferson, Ryan McMahon,
Jerusha Medidha, Matthew Ray, and George Smith. Congratulations to all!
All members of National Honor Society are available for Peer Tutoring. If you would like more
information about this program, please contact your child’s guidance counselor.
The members of National Honor Society will begin planning a large fundraiser event to be held this
spring. They are currently busy selecting possible charitable organizations and expanding the scope of
fundraising efforts and service.
LEO CLUB
The Leo Club participated in several events this fall and winter including the Spookey Fest, a Food
Drive, Ringing the Bell for the Salvation Army and Bake Sales to raise money for a donation to
Bethany House. The combined efforts of Leo Club and Habitat for Humanity provided food and gift
cards for many families in Rockville Centre through St. Agnes and the MLK Center. Although, the
Leo’s and Lion’s club members were only able to ring the bell for the Salvation Army on one Saturday,
due to poor weather conditions, two buckets were filled on that one Saturday. As the Leo Club is now
8
officially recognized by the Lion’s Club International organization this year we are entertaining the
possibility of sending one of our members to Arizona for an international LEO Club conference over
the summer. Other future projects include: attendance at the United Nations Lion/Leo Club day, a
spring food drive, a meal to the Bethany House and two more bake sales.
MATH HONOR SOCIETY Math Honor Society had their Induction ceremony on Monday, November 19. 106 students were
inducted into the Honor Society. Mr. Gallina, Mrs. Reilly, Mr. Rubenfeld and Mrs. Frazer were honored
at the ceremony. Officers were chosen as well. They are: President: Kailey Sewell, 1st Vice-
President: Zoe Leff, 2nd Vice-President: Kassie Zangari, Secretary: Ryan Riccio
We are working on developing a tutoring program and planning a Pi Day Celebration in March.
MATHLETES This year, the team has competed in four out of six of Nassau County Interscholastic Mathletes
Competitions, with the two remaining competitions to be held in February and March. There are
approximately 15 students participating in the competitions. The team also competes monthly in the NY
Math League, and will attend the Nassau Math Tournament held at SUNY Old Westbury on Friday,
February 1st.
QUIZ BOWL
The South Side Quiz Bowl team is led by several members of the senior class. Each month we compete
with different high schools in Western Nassau in a tournament held at Valley Stream South High
School. We have two matches remaining this year before playoffs begin. We compete in Varsity and
Junior Varsity level questions for each competition. The Quiz Bowl team currently consists of 12
members and holds weekly meetings to exercise their minds in general trivia knowledge across many
different subjects.

News from the Health Office…
Flu season is upon us. Remember to wash your hands since this is one of the best defenses to decrease
the spread of germs as well as covering your mouth when you cough and/or sneeze.
Seasonal Flu Facts: In the United States, the influenza or "flu" season usually runs from late Fall into
late Spring. The flu is a serious illness. Flu usually starts with fever, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and
body aches. If your child has any of these symptoms, it is in his/her best interest to seek medical
attention and remain home until he/she is well.
H1N1 (Swine) flu facts: This type of flu was first diagnosed in April 2009 by a school nurse. It’s a
new flu strain that failed to disappear in the warm weather. It presents as a sore throat, temperature
greater than 100, runny nose, headache, cough, body aches, fatigue, chills, nausea, diarrhea, and nasal
and/or chest congestion. Those that presented with H1N1 experienced mild symptoms and recovered at
home. This type of flu virus is now in the flu vaccine.
Flu Prevention: The best way to protect yourself from getting either flu is by getting vaccinated with
the flu vaccines which contains both seasonal and H1N1 flu protection. Since the flu virus changes
each year, it is important that you receive a new seasonal flu vaccine every year. It takes approximately
2 weeks after vaccination to develop antibodies against the flu. The best months to get vaccinated are
October through December; however, you can get vaccinated throughout the season. Any protection
against the flu is better than no protection!
9
Practice good hand washing. Everyone should wash their hands often with soap and water, especially
after coughing or sneezing and before eating for at least 20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday twice). If
you are not near a sink, gels, rubs, and hand wipes all work well, as long as they contain at least 60%
alcohol.
Cover your cough! The main way that the flu spreads is from person to person in the droplets produced
by coughs and sneezes. It’s important to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or
sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, NOT into your hands.
Stay home if you have a fever > 100.4, vomiting, diarrhea, severe sore throat or headache with a fever
until you are symptom free for 24 hours. This keeps the germs to themselves rather than sharing them
to others in our school buildings.
You CANNOT get the flu from the flu vaccine!
9th graders:
All 9th graders will be screened for scoliosis during the month of March “Scoliosis Screening Month”.
Scoliosis (sko-lee-O-sis) is a medical condition in which there is a sideways curve of the spine or
backbone. The purpose of scoliosis screening is to identify students with spinal abnormalities that may
cause impairment of the body’s range of motion and endurance, and in the advanced stages, back pain.
In its early stages, scoliosis is not usually detected without the careful examination by trained persons.
With early detection and intervention, scoliosis may be prevented from progressing so that it does not
interfere with mobility, activity, or comfort. If you have any objections, please notify the health office,
in writing, no later than February 28, 2019.
10th graders entering 11th grade in September:
All students entering 11th grade next year are required to have a physical examination. All students who
do not submit the necessary documentation by September 30th, 2019, will be examined by the District
nurse practitioner. Physical examination forms are available in the health office or on the nursing
website which can be found by going to www.rvcschools.org click on health services under
departments & programs.
11th graders entering 12th grade in September:
Immunization law has changed again and now requires your child to have (2) vaccines to protect them
against meningococcal disease if they received the 1st vaccine before age 16. After age 16, your child
requires only 1 vaccine. However, some students received 2 vaccines before age 16 and now require a
3rd vaccine! If your child does not have this vaccine(s) by September 30, 2019, he/she will not be
permitted to attend school.
Emergency Contact Cards:
Please remember to send in your child’s updated emergency contact card since this is an important part
of your child’s records and the best way to reach you when needed. The emergency cards now require
email addresses of each parent/person in parental relation. If you have not submitted an emergency
contact card for this school year or your telephone number(s) and/or address has changed, please
contact the health office at (516) 255-8955, have your child pick up an emergency contact card at the
health office or go to the nursing website and print an emergency contact card.
Nursing Website:
All school forms including emergency contact cards, medication, mandated physicals and sports forms
can be downloaded from this website as well as providing information on various health topics. The
website also provides links to various health organizations. You can find the website by going to
10
www.rvcschools.org, click on departments and programs, click on health services, click on printable
forms, and select the form you wish to print.
Sports Information for Spring Season:
Athletes trying out for a Spring sport can have their examination performed at SSHS on Feb 27th n
Room 1309 at 2:30-3:30. All athletes are responsible for determining which paperwork is needed for a
clearance to be received in a timely fashion. This information can be found on the wall in the nurses’
office. Most sports begin on Monday, March 11, 2019.
Concussion testing is available February 27th, February 28th, March 1st, March 4th and March 5th
from 3:15-4:15 at SSHS Room 2311 and June 3,4,5,6 from 3-4 at SSHS Room 2311.
Wishing all a happy and healthy New Year.

high school years are a transformational time in our students’ lives. We continue to be mindful that they
learn from our example as they forge their own identities. We celebrate their successes, and we learn
from all of the challenges we rise to meet together.
Please attend our monthly meetings and if you haven’t already, join our PTA. Nominations for officers
