Calling all senior students to our Senior Tutorial Centre!
It was wonderful to see so many students at the first weeks of the Senior Tutorial
Centre in the Library. I would strongly encourage all Year 11 and Year 12 students to
make the most of the Senior Tutorial Centre occurring every Tuesday afternoon
from 2.45 pm – 4.00 pm. UNSW Master of Teaching students and teachers (Maths)
are available to assist with course work, study preparation and past papers. Stu-
dents do not have to attend each
week, but remember it is an ideal op-
portunity to have a quiet place to work and utilise the support
available. We will also be investigating an alternative time for the
students who attend TAFE on a Tuesday afternoon.

Empowering Young Women’s Workshop
We are very fortunate to have many influential business links which provide outstanding opportunities for our
students.
Ms Stell led an exciting workshop focusing on leadership, goal setting
and emotional intelligence at the Empowering Young Women’s Day
held last week at T. Rowe Price on the 50th floor – what a view! This
was a wonderful opportunity for our Year 10 girls to foster and nur-
ture leadership aspirations and ambitions.
School Improvement continues on….
Painting of school buildings and classroom continues throughout the school. The Senior Common Room is also
getting a facelift and additional seating has been purchased for the senior outdoor area.
Contrary to the Michael Daley newsletter you may have received in your letterbox, our school is looking really
smart and our grounds and gardens continue to flourish.
Staffing News
Ms Parker is taking extended leave from the beginning of Term 2 and Ms Mifsud will relieve as Head Teacher
Science and Mr Yasman will be teaching in the Science Faculty. Ms Lee, a highly experienced Mathematics
teacher will be replacing Ms Bacon.
Uniform Update
We are currently working with our school community – students, parents and teachers to update certain
aspects of the school uniform. Some of these changes may include long sleeve shirts, culottes/shorts for girls
and a light weight spray jacket. Student leaders will be communicating this information via the Assembly, Year
Meetings and P&C Meetings.
For your diary
On Tuesday 4th April from 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm, the Year 7 and Year 11 interim report night will be held in the
Teachers Common Room and C Block rooms and we hope many parents will be in attendance for this
important night. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
Kind Regards
Robyn Matthews
MEETING DATES
Our meetings are usually held on the second Tuesday of the month (unless this falls within school holidays in
which case we move the date) at 7.30pm in the Common Room.
Last meeting, we voted to change this time for a trial period of 3 months to commence at 7pm. Please be
aware of this time change, and we hope this may enable more people to attend. Our aim is to keep the
meeting to 1 ½ hours.
Entry is via the side gate via the carpark entrance from Paine Street. After entering the carpark gate the side
gate is on your right. Go through the gate and the common room is on your right.
We warmly welcome all parents/caregivers to come along and offer your ideas. Please note: the AGM was held
in November, so you are safe!
List of meetings for the year:

Perform—High Impact Beacon Program
Yr 9 History Rock WWI with a Bar Fight
On Tuesday 14 March Year 11 were involved in a wonderful high impact
program facilitated by Lani Zavelsky from the Beacon Foundation. The host
venue was Colin Biggers & Paisley Lawyers in Park Street, Sydney.
The students were guided through a series of activities designed to highlight
ways of impressing a prospective employer. The activities included group
discussions, demonstrations and individual contributions to role play and the
do’s and don’ts when attending a job interview.
Students were able to identify with personality types and they then discussed
the advantages and disadvantages of these in the work force. Our Year 11
students responded very well to the activities which were relevant and fun.
The facilitator Lani was a dynamic presenter who was able to gain 100%
involvement from our students and he has our sincere thanks. We are also
grateful to Colin Biggers & Paisley for looking after us so well and providing a
wonderful conference room on the 42 floor and a superb lunch which all
students enjoyed.
Mrs Brookes
Careers Adviser
On Friday period 6 we decided to gain a better understanding
of what it would have been like if the causes of WWI were
talked about as if they were a bar fight! Much fun was had with
students representing a country and playing out the events
that led up to and then ended the first world war. Of course, it
ended with Germany being blamed for everything! Thank you
to Ms Stell for putting it all together!

The challenge will run again in October. If you enjoy problem solving, sequencing and reasoning then Ms Kelso
would like you to have a go!
I’m thinking about running a dance club (possibly on an afternoon after school). The aim would be to do blocks
(say 4 or 5 weeks at a time) of different dance styles including Lindy Hop and solo vernacular jazz (vintage)
(Swing dancing), African and Hip Hop. Some of the blocks would require a fee to pay the teacher who is coming
in. At this stage, I would like to get an idea of numbers of students interested to see if it would be feasible/
worthwhile. If students are interested - please see Miss Mifsud in Science, or email her on
Microsoft comes to South Sydney There is no better way to spend a rainy day! Two members of the Microsoft (Store) team conducted a
fantastic workshop with Ms Kelso’s Year 9 Information and Software Technology class on Friday 17th March
during periods 3 + 4. Both presenters spoke about their career pathway that has led them to work for
Microsoft.
In session 1, students were mesmerised by the hardware contained in a laptop computer. They watched on
for 75 minutes whilst the laptop was taken apart and were given lots of tips and tricks should they want to
build their own PC. One of the most fascinating things that the students learnt was that you do not have to
study IT to be employed by Microsoft.
Session 2 was hands-on, using creative cloud software to design a movie post-
er. Many of the students were able to do this independently, some required assistance.
The visit was extremely worthwhile as it was linked to our curriculum.
We look forward to another visit from Microsoft in August.
Ms Kelso
History Club The HSIE Faculty has started a History Club this year! The aim of the Club is to give students a chance to explore
a variety of topics from historical events to current affairs that they might not get to cover in classes. It is open
to all students with an interest in History and Current Affairs from Years 7-12. Topics will be chosen from a
variety of sources; some planned by the teacher and some after suggestions by the students.

Empowering Women Program Success at T Rowe Price On Thursday the 24th March- 26 yr 10 girls were taken to investment company T. Rowe Price to participate in
our annual Empowering Women Program. Thanks to our friends at United Way we were able to connect with
T. Rowe Price who funded this program by providing the venue- their boardroom, mentors, and lunch for our
students. The day was fantastic as we workshopped important issues pertaining to women in the workplace.
These issues included resilience, strategies for success, gender inequality and very interestingly emotional
intelligence. We were very lucky to have some very impressive and successful female mentors participate and
help us through the workshop. We came away far more fearless than we thought we would have! Thank you to
Mrs Stell and Mrs Wilson for presenting and a very big thank you to both DB Schenker for presenting the session
on emotional intelligence and of course United Way and T. Rowe Price.

What’s happening in Yr 9 Child Studies?? As part of the first module, we take a look at an expectant mother’s diet and foods that she should and should
not be eating. We also looked up recipes suitable for and found out the nutritional requirements in the diet of an
expectant mother, then chose and prepared a dish that was suitable.

Medieval Day at SSHS The year 8 History classes enjoyed an educational and highly entertaining view of medieval life by James Adams.
The presentation began with James showing the students weapons and armour. We were lucky to be able to try
on mail and plate armour which is much heavier than we expected. Law and order and torture methods were
also covered with most of us getting the chance to put our heads on the line in the pillory. There was a variety
of weapons we were allowed to handle, from axes to longbows and halberds to flails. James Adams also demon-
strated the awesome power of the ballista, a kind of giant crossbow.
It was a wonderfully interactive presentation and we thank James very much for sharing his extensive
knowledge of medieval and Viking history.
2017 has been a great year for the prefects in that we have achieved or are working towards many of the goals
we had set upon being elected. This term we successfully held a morning tea for all staff in honour of our
hard-working female teachers on International Woman’s Day as well as created a video presentation about
International Woman’s Day and all the influential women in our lives. We also held talks with the junior school
about Bullying on the National Day of Action Against Bullying. The Prefects have also partnered with the SRC in
2017 to create events and activities for Harmony Day and Valentine’s day which has seen much success.
We are pleased to say that one of our many efforts to make SSHS students voices count has been a SUCCESS!
Our prefect suggestion box that has been set up in the library is one of the prefects many ways of
communicating with students and we would like to let you know that as a result of your suggestions we have a
survey on the school canteen for further student opinion to be gathered and we have been working on
introducing shorts into our girl’s uniform.
We would like to thank you for all your help and ask that you
please continue to put suggestions in our suggestion box so we
can make your ideas a reality.

Removing Acrylic paint from clothes
We are painting in Visual Arts classes
A number of painting tasks are underway and students are being asked
to take care. Even though we supply aprons paint can find its way onto
clothes which is why we use acrylic paints. Please use the following
washing instructions if you find paint on uniforms.

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
National Day of Action Against Bullying And Violence
The seventh National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence was held on Friday, 17th March 2017. This an-
nual day is Australia's key anti-bullying event for schools, and encourages all students to 'take a stand together'
against bullying and violence in schools, the classroom and beyond. At South Sydney High School all students
from year 7 to year 9 actively participated in workshops throughout the day. These workshops were facilitated by
our school prefects and peer support leaders who did a fantastic job. All students received wristbands in support
of this day. South Sydney High School has a zero tolerance policy in regards to bullying and violence.
