At ‘The Grove’ The celebration of project completion at the Siesta waterway, originally sched-uled for June 10 will be de-layed until later in the summer. I’ll announce it as soon as we confirm a date with the County. Probably sometime in August. We were delighted to wel-

come Sarasota County Commissioner Nancy De-tert (center) who came to see the project work at The Grove on Tuesday, April 11. Meeting with her were Rich Zinn (left), Harrison Fox (right) and Lara Jansen (behind the camera as usual!). Of course, the work goes on. Saturday, April 22 was another workday at The Grove. Cleaning and digging and planting were Marla Wilcox, Ilona Wilson, David Burton, Gary Bennett, Rich Zinn, Harrison Fox, Ste-phen Brown and Bruce Martin (not pictured).

What’s up at Shamrock Park BY BROOKE ELIAS, PARK NATURALIST Two Seasons & Serendipity Nature Walks are scheduled for this month, on Friday, May 12 and Friday, May 26. Join Master Naturalist Kate Borduas and

staff to explore different trails and habitats. May is one of the best times to spot manatees in the Intracoastal, as things warm up for mating season! Meet at the Nature Center at 9:00am. After being rained out in April, we’re hoping for good weather at the next Demonstration Garden Tour on Thursday, May 4 at 9:00am. Many bromeliads and bushes are in full bloom now. Come join the Master Gardeners to discover what flowers might be adapted for your yard! Tours are given the first Thursday of each month. The two recent wildfires at the Park—on March 5 and 20— affected just under four acres. Sarasota County Fire Mitigation Specialists, local firefighters and Florida Forest-ry Service combined their efforts and resources to contain both fires quickly, with no structural damage or loss of property at the park. On April 19, combined crews from Natural Area Parks and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office worked to clear the fire areas of unsafe and unsta-ble burnt out trees and roots. While the fires destroyed some trees and vegetation, we’ll use this opportunity to restore more scrub habitat for the gopher tortoises and scrub jays. These scrub inhabitants actually depend on fire to keep their territories clear for spotting predators and foraging on fresh foliage. Crayola Critters! Is back-Friday, May 19 at 1:00pm Let’s make room for Butterflies! We welcome kids aged 3 to 5 years-old (must be accompanied by parent or guardi-an); we’ll learn about insects, how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly and what they eat. Led by Master Naturalist Janie Ewell. Read picture books, make a “pom-pom” cat-erpillar craft and take a nature walk in search of butter-

flies and oth-er bugs. Meet at the pavil-ion near the playground – and bring a snack to en-joy after-wards. You must call to register (941) 404-6336.

SolutionsNot a Sales Pitch

I have worn hearing aids for a number of years, on and o. I say on and o because it has been o more with my most recent pair purchased from another provider in Venice. I had an annoying problem with feedback, which neither they nor another local provider were able to cor-rect or alleviate. Both told me I should consider newer, more advanced models, which they would be happy to sell me. Since mine were similar, I felt they were more interested in making a sale than helping me. As a result, they wound up in my dresser drawer (not an uncommon situation.) I decided to give it one more go. A friend referred me to Blair Post at Contemporary Hearing. What they said couldn’t be done, was done by Blair. No sales pitch on newer models; just a willingness to listen to and work with me. Aer testing my hearing, he patiently worked with me to make adjustments to the programming. He also retted the aids with new leads and cones. e ones I had were not sized or tted properly and caused much of the feedback. I was given a follow up appointment the next week at which time Blair ne tuned the programming and changed out one of the cones for another size. ese were simple, inexpensive solutions to a xable problem. Although I was advised of charges ahead of time, no pay-ment was collected until I was satised. Although I found Blair to have an abundance of knowledge, patience and humor, his greatest attribute is INTEGRITY. He honestly wants to help. I would rec-ommend Blair Post and Contemporary Hearing to any person desiring to improve their hearing.

Beach Trust News BY MARTHA NEILSEN, CHAIR, BEACH TRUST The boat ramp has continued to have some ongoing issues with the chain, lock and one of the bollards. All are now repaired and the Trust has installed security cameras to help ensure that future problems will be averted. Thank you Rick Curwood and John Semple for replacing the damaged bollard. We just want to remind our boaters that you paid for the ramp key so please lock up after you’re done. A volunteer group made up of Bruce Martin, Dean Draper, Don Dockery and Jerry Bur-rell completed ongoing maintenance on the ferry house, thank you! On April 18, John Bowne and I attended a meeting of the Sarasota Coastal Advisory Committee, which is the first level of approval for the dredging grant the Trust has ap-

plied for and we were approved. The Sarasota County Board of Commissioners will be the final approval and their meeting is May 24. The grant money is from West Coast Inland Navigation District and won't be available until October of this year. Hopefully we will be approved in May. Once we have our approval we will be able to determine when the dredging can be done, so stay tuned!

By Capt. Randall Patterson Quite frequently a new passenger on their first ride to the beach is surprised by how quiet the ferry is when we start to back out of the ferry house. “Is this boat electric?” they ask. “Why, yes it is,” we captains might respond. The old ferry was once gasoline powered, which required fuel to be stored at the ferry house

since there are no marinas nearby. However, many years ago the decision was made to switch to electric. Electric pow-er offers clear advantages in our situation. The first, as I alluded to earlier, is fuel storage. We don’t have to keep jerry cans of volatile gasoline stored on the premises. No oil. No filter changes. No fumes to breathe while backing out of the slip. Electric is just cleaner. Second, we travel in an Idle Speed/No Wake zone. We don’t need to go fast, and electric motors are better in slow speed scenarios. Have you ever noticed that trolling motors on fishing boats are electric? Electric motors have the same torque (or rotational force) regardless of how fast they are turning. They can be fitted with larger props, so they have the ability to start and stop the boat’s movement quickly. Third, they’re cheaper to operate. It’s hard to know for sure how much electricity we use to recharge the batteries (there are 20 golf-cart type on the ferry) but a good estimate would be less than two dollars a day. Speaking of batteries, the new ferry has twice as many batteries as the old ferry so we don’t have to stop and recharge in the middle of the day like we used to. Occasionally, someone will ask why we don’t recharge with solar panels. While that seems like a good idea, the ferry charges at night. No sun. No solar power. The roof would be a great sur-face for the panels, but we would need a method of storing the power until we could transfer it to the boat overnight. Our three motors were built right here in Florida, by Ray Electric Outboards in Cape Coral. They’ve been in business since 1974, and we have the advantage of being less than an hour away when we need service. The inventor, Morton Ray, is still in the shop every day. So, please sit back and enjoy the clean, quiet, electric ride to the beach.

Sometimes called green infrastructure, low im-pact design (LID) treats rainfall as a benefit ra-ther than a nuisance in our yards, and encour-ages the capture and use of rainwater on site. Common LID applications include rain gardens, pervious pavers, canopy trees and cisterns. Suc-cessful applications of LID can have many bene-fits, including: • Smarter, more attractive landscaping; • Reduced maintenance effort and costs; • Higher “curb appeal” and value; and • Cleaner, healthier creeks and bays. Our yards are connected to our waterways. Rainfall that soaks into the ground nourishes our landscapes and recharges the water table. Rainfall that’s allowed to run off our yards carries nutrients and other pollutants that feed algae blooms and harm aquatic life, impacting the places where we fish, swim and play. By reducing pollutant laden stormwater runoff, LID can improve the beauty and value of your home, neighborhood AND our environment. You’ve probably al-ready noticed LID being used by your neighbors. Consider what’s possible for your yard. A Rain Garden is a shallow planted area that collects rainfall from your yard so it can quickly soak into the ground and be used by plants. Canopy Trees and Shrubs with large leafy surfaces can intercept rainwater before it hits the ground, keeping it out of the bay. Rain Barrels and Cisterns can capture clean rainwater and store it for irrigation, when plants really need it. Florida-friendly Plants grow naturally in our subtropical climate without fertilizers, pesticides and mowing. There is a huge variety of colorful choices. Pervious Pavers or Shell are beautiful alternatives to concrete. They allow rainwater to recharge our ground-water. Groundcover Plants create a low maintenance alterna-tive to lawns, with no need for fertilizer, pesticides or mowing.

very strong performance for this market and up from previous months. Also the average sale price was 205K which is really really good news - in fact, GREAT news for homeowners in South Venice Beach! There are currently 92 active listings at the time of this article and 57 homes are under contract. The inventory is still low, another sign that home values are up. So if you’re thinking of selling, this all says go ahead. It’s a very good time to list your home. NOTE: Disclaimer: The sales information was gathered from the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). The sales were by various participants of MLS. All information deemed reliable but not guaranteed.
