The students are studying the Holocaust in their social studies and English courses. Bethel Park superintendent Nancy Aloi Rose said the unit of study provides students the op- portunity to open their minds and hearts. She added that by doing so, Thats how we will change the world. The Holocaust was an at- tempt by the Nazi government of Germany to erase the Jewish population of Europe. Mr. Ottenheimer said his par- ents were born in Germany and so were their ancestors. We considered ourselves German, he said. Mr. Ottenheimers father fought with Germany in World War I. On the day of the announce- ment, a soldier from Hitlers pri- vate army stood in front of the Ottenheimers store. According to the Centersfor Disease Control andPrevention, cardiovasculardisease, which includesheart disease, stroke andhigh blood pressure, is theNo. 1 killer of women andmen in the United States.

Many women dont un-derstand how obesity, smoking, diabetes, highblood pressure and familyhistory affect heart dis-ease, said Mitsuko Taka-hashi, a Jefferson Hospitalcardiothoracic surgeon

who will conduct the pro-gram on Tuesday.

The Health for Her ini-tiative is a past winner ofthe statewide CommunityOutreach and EngagementAward for exceptional pa-tient care services given bythe Hospital & Healthsys-tem Association of Penn-sylvania.

Lung cancer kills morewomen than breast, cervi-cal, vaginal and ovariancancer combined, Ms. Lin-hart pointed out.

Upper St. Clair schools

Team named tops for appsBy Janice Crompton

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A mobile application de-signed by a team of Upper St.Clair gifted students hasbeen named Best in the Na-tion in the Verizon Innova-tive App Challenge. Theaward means the app will becreated and available fordownload on Google apps.

High school juniors Mi-chael Nastac, ChristinaPark, Gaurav Bhushan,Nymisha Rameswarapu,Akshay Prasadan and VidhiShah created A Look In-side app, allowing users to

virtually explore and dissectcommon household devicessuch as blenders, pens orlaptops.

The app was aimed at ele-mentary and middle schoolstudents, but people of allages would find it interest-ing, said Michael, 17.

Sponsored by high schoolgifted teacher Patricia Palaz-zolo, the team was namedBest in State and Best in Re-gion earlier this year andwas rewarded with a live, in-teractive question-and-an-swer session via GoogleHangout with Hugh Herr, know as the Bionic Man of

the Massachusetts Instituteof Technology.

As Best in Region, theteam received $5,000 fromthe Verizon Foundation toadvance the school districtsSTEM science, technol-ogy, engineering and math program.

The national designationcomes with an award of$15,000 from the foundation,to be used toward STEM ini-tiatives at Upper St. ClairHigh School.

In addition, Verizon willaward a Samsung Galaxytablet for each student andtheir sponsor, in-persontraining from the MITMaster Trainers to turn thestudents concept into aworking app and an all-ex-penses-paid trip for eachteam member and oneguardian to present theteams idea at the NationalTechnology Student Associ-ation Conference this sum-mer in Dallas.

Ms. Palazzolo and her stu-dents were surprised withthe news by acting highschool principal Lou Angelo, who hosted a reception forthe group with senior repre-sentatives from Verizon andothers.

West Jefferson Hills schoolboard unanimously tabled a voteon a plan to change the way stu-dents are graded after parents com-plained they were not informedabout the plan.

About 40 parents attended theJan. 27 meeting to express their dis-pleasure with the potential changefrom a grade point average withletter grades to percent, as well asthe board’s failure to adequatelyalert them about it.

If adopted, the change wouldgo into effect for the 2015-16 schoolyearfor incoming freshmen.

After the vote was tabled, boardPresident Anthony Angotti saidhe would send the plan back to theEducation Technology Committee, which will form an ad hoc commit-

tee of students, parents, teachers, administrators and board mem-bers to explore the matter.

“This needs to be a completelyengaged process,” he said.

He disputed the complaints thatthe process lacked transparency, saying he directed the administra-tion to inform parents, students, building principals and ParentTeacher Associations about thescheduled discussion at this meet-ing and the last agenda meeting.

Superintendent Michael Panzasaid he complied with that requestand also sent an “alert now” mes-sage as voicemail, text messageand email to all parents inform-ing them of the proposal before theJan. 27 meeting.

Those attending said they didn’treceive the message and that infor-mation on the issue did not appear

on the district website until thatday.

The issue of using percents onreport cards and, therefore, collegeapplications, was first brought tothe board’s attention by a middleschool teacher who called it aninequity in the current gradingsystem.

For example, an A reflects workgraded 90-100 percent; a B is forwork graded 80-89, and so forth.

If a student receives three B’sand one A — for three scores of 89and a 95 — in a course during fourgrading periods, the student wouldearn a B average.

With percents, the three B’s andone A would average mathemati-cally to 90.5, or an A average.

Bonnie Dyer, director of curric-ulum, instruction and assessment, polled district teachers on which

system of evaluating students theypreferred, at the suggestion of theEducation Technology Committee.

She said 126 of the 142 teacherswho responded to her questionchose percents.

Parents speak

However, parents in the audi-ence said using percents is faironly if all teachers grade the sameway. but they do not.

“A 92 percent in one class mightbe a 98 percent in another class,”said Suzanne Downer of JeffersonHills.

Among the other three parentspeakers was Patti Duda of Jeffer-son Hills, who said some teachersoffer bonus points while others donot because the district does nothave a uniform curriculum.

She also said students might be

hesitant to register for the more rig-orous Advanced Placement classesif they were graded in percentsbecause the A they earn might be91 percent, while they might earn100 percent for a basic class.

Students might also shy awayfrom extracurricular offerings ifthey are worried about earninghigh percents.

Ms. Duda also said it is unfairfor students who transfer into thedistrict with an A average to beassigned a 100 percent under theproposal, which would affect allother students’ class rankings.

Amy Clark of Jefferson Hillssaid percents place district stu-dents at a disadvantage to otherstudents applying for colleges whohave letter grades and a GPA, as inMt. Lebanon.

The matter first arose publicly

That issue also will be cov-ered by the new ad hoc com-mittee, Mr. Angotti said.

Features include a1,000-seat auditorium, a3,400-square-foot stage that

The plan fits within thebudget devised two years agoand will cost taxpayers witha home assessed at $100,000$302 more in taxes overseven years.

The new facility will bebuilt on a vacant 151-acre sitethe district owns across fromthe administration buildingon Old Clairton Road.

Construction shouldbegin in spring 2016, with aplanned opening for studentsfor the 2018-19 school year.

It’s been a frustratingseason for a group of ath-letes accustomed to win-ning with regularity.

Clairton has had its strug-gles. The Bears, as typicallythe case, got a late start dueto most of its players compet-ing for the school’s footballteam that advanced to thestate final on Dec. 12. Then, several players left the team, forcing others to step intonew roles. Because of allof this, it’s taken the Bearslonger than most teams tocome together and play as acohesive unit.

But throughout it all anddespite an 8-12 overall record, the Bears won three of theirfinal four section games tofinish second behind Jean-nette in Class A Section 4 andreach the playoffs for the 11thyear in a row.

“Once we got our rotationdown, guys started to knowwhere each other was goingto be on the floor,” third-year coach Matt Geletkosaid. “We started to learnour strengths and weak-nesses. We learned who ourtop scorers were going to beand who our top defensiveplayers were going to be. Wewere then able to start work-ing on different things.”

Clairton has leaned onsolid defensive play to earnits wins, having not givenup more than 55 points inany of those games. It’soffensively where the Bearshave been shaky, some-times going on long scoringdroughts and finishingquarters with single-digitpoints.

“My major concern isgetting good offensive per-formances,” Geletko said.“Defensively, we’ve beenfine. We just struggle toscore some nights. We seemto get into the flow of a gamethrough our defense. If wecan get some consistency onoffense, we like our chances[in the playoffs].”

Junior shooting guardUri Myers leads the Bearsin scoring with 15 pointsper game. He’s joined in thestarting lineup by juniorpoint guard HarrisonDreher, sophomore guard-forward Lamont Wade, junior forward AaronMathews and senior for-ward Raymone Clifford.

Serra playoff bound

Serra Catholic has wonone fewer game than it didlast season, but this seasonmight be considered moreof a success considering theEagles have done somethingthey didn’t do a year ago —qualify for the playoffs.

The Eagles are in theplayoffs a year after fallingshort for the first time sincethe 2003-04 season. Theyhave competed in Class Athis season after spendingthe previous two seasonsin Class AA. Barring a Cin-derella run in the playoffs, the Eagles (8-13) will finishbelow .500 in Class A for thefirst time since going 8-13 in2000-01 season.

But for now, the mostimportant fact is that coachVince Gibbons has guidedhis team to the playoffs afterfinishing in a three-way tiefor third place in Section 4with a 4-6 record. From here, anything can happen. Thisis especially true consider-ing the Eagles have one ofthe top players in Class A in

Ashley Battle has seen highenough levels of basketball, fromhigh school, to college to profes-sional, from domestic to interna-tional leagues, to know one sea-son is not a reason for panic.

After a highly successful col-legiate and professional career,Battle began her coaching careerlast year at Chartiers Valley.

She had to fill the shoes ofSpencer Stefko, who resigned

after leading the Colts to theWPIAL Class AAAA final in2013. Battle also had to take overa team that was competing inSection 4-AAAA, home to vet-eran coaches and powerhouseprograms, including Mt. Leba-non, Bethel Park and Upper St.Clair.

The Colts struggled. They fin-ished 7-15 overall and 4-8 in sec-tion play, missing the WPIALplayoffs.

“I think a lot of times we shotourselves in the foot,” Battle said.

“All the teams in the section arereally competitive, they havegreat coaching. All the coacheshave been there for quite sometime. They are established. Wecreated unforced turnovers inwhich other teams capitalizedon. It is a brutal section.”

The 2013-14 season was differ-ent than what Battle was used to.

Senior Jack Relihan, pulling down a rebound against Montour, leads South Fayette in scoring, averaging about 17 points per game.

By John D’AbruzzoTri-State Sports & News Service

Back in December, Rich Bon-naure was wondering what typeof basketball team he would haveto work with this season.

Considering just about hisentire South Fayette boys rosteralso plays football, most of Bon-naure’s players where still on thegridiron winning the school itssecond state title in a row on Dec.13 and didn’t even get a chance totouch a basketball until almostChristmas.

The late start, however, neverhampered the Lions.

South Fayette went on to win 14of its first 15 games and finishedits regular season with a 17-4overall record.

“It’s pretty hard to envisionthat these guys went from play-ing football in Hershey to goingout and winning 17 games,” saidBonnaure, who’s in his 13th sea-son coaching South Fayette. “Icouldn’t be any more happy withour results. These guys wentabove and beyond my expecta-tions.”

The Lions also captured the

program’s first section title since2010 with a perfect 12-0 mark inSection 5-AAA.

“That was their first goal,”Bonnaure said. “They put thatout there and went on to reach it.To go undefeated in Class AAAis not easy to do. We’re one of thesmallest Class AAA schools andwe make up a heck of a sched-ule. They really embellished thetoughness of our schedule andthat makes winning the sectionthat much more special.”

South Fayette completed theregular season outscoring oppo-nents by an average of 57.5-44.3.The team’s four losses duringthe regular season came againstquality opposition — Butler Area(Class AAAA playoff qualifier),Seton-LaSalle (ranked No. 4 inClass AA), Washington (No. 5 inClass AA) and Chartiers Valley(No. 3 in Class AAAA).

“We don’t make a schedule togo undefeated,” Bonnaure said.“We want to tax our guys and getthem ready for the playoffs. Everyyear, we try to schedule againstevery type of team you could face.Whether it’s athleticism or coach-ing style, we want to see every

situation before the playoffs.”Bonnaure typically starts

5-foot-10 senior point guard NickMcKee, 5-10 senior guard JakeThomas and 6-1 senior guardJack Relihan. He then rotates 6-0senior forward George Slater, 6-2senior forward Matt O’Rourkeand 6-4 senior forward BrettBrumbaugh to round out hisstarting five.

Tom Silko, a 5-10 junior guard, has usually been the first playeroff the bench, while 6-0 juniorforward Josh Castelucci and 5-10sophomore point guard MattThomas also have contributed inrelief.

“This team really has heartand it’s shown by their defense,”Bonnaure said. “I rememberbeing a young coach going to seecoaches like Bobby Knight andMike Krzyzewski put on clinicsand preach defense. They alsosaid that most defense comesdown to a player’s heart.

“These kids embody that andplay so hard together. You mightlook at this team and not thinkthey’reagoodbasketball team, but

South Fayette wrestlingfans had hoped to make athird consecutive trip to Her-shey to see the Lions competefor a PIAA Class AA teamtournament title, but a lossin the preliminary round toSaegertown on Feb. 2 endedtheir dual-meet season.

Coach Rick Chaussardwas disappointed with theLions’ performance, butwelcomed the extra practicetime.

“We didn’t perform up toexpectations in the WPIALand PIAA tournaments,”Chaussard said. “But ourearly exit from the state tour-nament has given us extrapractice time to preparefor the individual tourna-ments.”

South Fayette has beenplaying catch-up since thestart of the year. The Lionssqueezed all but one tour-nament into their Januaryschedule due to the footballteam’s success in the post-season.

“More than half of oursquad was on the footballteam,” said Chaussard, whois getting the Lions ready forSaturday’s Class AA Section1 Tournament at EllwoodCity. “We had very littletime for practice in January. These extra days of practiceare allowing us to go overvideo with the kids and workon their weaknesses.”

South Fayette has 12 wres-tlers entered in the Section1 Tournament, includingthree returning champions,Jared Walker, Brett Beltzand Mike Carr.

Walker is a two-time sec-tion champion and three-time finalist. He won as a152-pound freshman, placedsecond as a 160-pound soph-omore and claimed a sec-ond title last year at 160. Hereturns at 160 after spendingthe season at 170 and 182.

Beltz is also a two-timesection champion, but thefirst came in Section 3 as a120-pound freshman whileattending Keystone Oaks.Beltz sat out most of his soph-omore season with an injury, then transferred to SouthFayette and won a Section1 title last year at 145. He isnow competing at 182.

As an infant, Henri Wade-Chat-man loved playing peek-a-boo, and hehas the nickname to prove it.

Known as “Booka” (pronouncedBOO-ka) at Edinboro University,Wade-Chatman was given the nameby his mother and it stuck.

“My mom said when I was a babyshe was playing peek-a-boo with meand she said the word Booka and Istarted laughing so she started call-ing me that.”

These days, however, there’s noplace for Wade-Chatman to hide —every opposing team knows where heis on the basketball court.

A 6-foot-2 junior guard, Wade-Chat-man is the second-leading scorer inthe Pennsylvania State Athletic Con-ference at 19 points per game and is akey component on the Fighting Scotsmen’s basketball team.

“He’s a leader,” said Edinborocoach Pat Cleary, in his second sea-son after taking over for longtimecoach Greg Walcavich. “From thevery first day he kind of set the tonethis season.

“He actually really started it overthe summer and last spring. Hereally kicked it into gear last Christ-mas break and had a great second

half to the season. He just kind ofpicked up where the season left offin the spring by making sure guyswere holding up their end in theweight room and on the court. He’sbeen a very, very big part in what wedo and his leadership has been awe-some.”

After leading the City League inscoring at 23.1 points per game asa senior at Brashear in 2009-2010,Wade-Chatman, who lives on theSouth Side, played a season at Com-munity College of Allegheny County. He sat out the next year and had alittle inside connection to Edinboroso he transferred for his sophomore

season last year. His father, Henri Chat-

man, played for Walcavichat West Virginia Wesleyanbefore Walcavich was hiredat Edinboro in 1989 andWade-Chatman said Clearysaw him play when he was atCCAC.

Wade-Chatman quicklymade his mark at Edinboro. He started all 26 games lastseason and was the second-leading scorer at 13.8 pointsper game.

This season not only ishe the leading scorer at 19points per game, but he isthird in rebounds at 4.3 pergame and leads the team inassists with 66 from his two-guard position, somethingthat he is fully aware of.

“A lot of teams will be key-ing on me, it kind of leavesother people open,” Wade-Chatman said. “It makes iteasier for my teammates. But I just kind of let the gamecome to me.”

Wade-Chatman is alsodeadly from long range; he isthe team’s top 3-point shooteramong starters at 42.4 per-cent (59 of 139). His 3-point

field-goal percentage ranksthird in the conference andhe is third in the conferencein 3-pointers made per gamewith 2.7.

“He’s a pretty completeplayer,” Cleary said. “Hereally takes time, especiallyin the offseason, to watchfilm on his own to see whatworks and kind of see thingsfrom different sets of eyes.He asks the right questionsand he really trusts what meand my assistant are doingup here.”

Wade-Chatman has scoredin double-figures in everygame this season except one.Against rival Gannon, hemanaged just four points on2-for-17 shooting Jan. 10 in a66-48 loss.

“I was just too excited forthe big game,” he said. “I justhad to shake it off and have ashort-term memory.”

His memory was shortterm enough as he respondedwith 26 points in a rematchwith Gannon Feb. 4, but theFighting Scots were dealt a66-61 loss to the second-placeGolden Knights (15-8, 14-4) tosnap a four-game winningstreak. He has scored at least20 points 10 times this season

and has a high of 32 Jan. 7against Lock Haven.

“He’s dangerous,” Clearysaid. “He can really get youoff the bounce. He’s in the topthree in 3-point shooting per-centage, so even though hecan really score off the deckhe can really make shotsalso. He’s a complete player, but the best word to describehim is dangerous.”

Heading into Wednesday’shome game against SlipperyRock, Edinboro stood 11-11overall, 8-10 in the PSACWest, but seven of those 10conference losses were by acombined 25 points.

Cleary realizes, withWade-Chatman back forhis senior season next year, the Fighting Scots have anopportunity to improve onthat record.

“That is comforting,” hesaid. “The thing is, you likebeing around Henri. He’scoachable, he’s funny, he’sintense, he knows how to getthe other guys moving andhe knows how to see the bigpicture. It is great to know wehave him for another year.”

“Jared came within onewin of a PIAA title lastyear,” Chaussard said. “He’sbeen close to 162 [160 plus a2-pound weight allowance]all year, so moving downshould be no problem.”

South Park has titlists

South Park had four wres-tlers who have won a previ-ous Section 1 title. Greg Bul-sak and Rob Wolak won titlesin 2013 at 126 and 285, whileteammates Dallas Bulsakand Jake Wentzel won titleslast year at 106 and 138.

Wentzel is a two-timesection finalist who placedsecond at 132 last year. He isnow at 152 and ranked No.1 in the WPIAL. Greg Bul-

sak is competing at 170 thisyear and moved to No. 1 inthe rankings when Walkerdropped to 160.

Dallas Bulsak has movedto 126 and Wolak is back atheavyweight, but both arerecovering from injuriesincurred at the AlleghenyCounty Tournament. Bul-sak “tweaked” his elbow andWolak had a concussion.

“We’re hoping to have bothready for the tournament,”South Park coach Walt Kar-enbauer said. “We’re cross-ing our fingers. I have highexpectations for all four.”

“A big thing for us is thatwe’re getting scoring froma lot of different guys,” Bon-naure said. “Our insidegame along with the playfrom our guards has been anice luxury.”

Last season, after beat-ing Greensburg Salem inthe preliminary round of

the WPIAL playoffs, SouthFayette lost to ElizabethForward in the first roundof the Class AAA bracket.

Bonnaure, though, believes his team hasenough to make a deeperrun this year.
