Made up of four countries, all unique, yet entirely connected, Southeast Asia’s cultural diversity is unlike any other. With a history that dates back as far as a million years, the Indochinese Peninsula, including Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar, promises the hustle and bustle of city life, where the influence of the modern world is as noticeable as the connection to the past. A gripping region just waiting to be explored, the only way it should be, by river.

VietnamHanoi’s centuries-old architecture and French-colonial influence is what

has given it the nickname ‘the Paris of the East’. The city’s community

spirit is very much alive and well and their dedication to helping their

disadvantaged fellow city dwellers is palpable. Travelling north east takes

you to Halong Bay, where its emerald waters, rainforest-dusted limestone

islands and otherworldly aura, has been enticing travellers for decades. A

visit to Ho Chi Minh City’s Cu Chi Tunnels brings familiar tales of war to life

and a Mekong cruise gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in Cai

Be’s floating markets and to enjoy a Vietnamese tuk tuk ride.

CambodiaPhnom Penh’s exotic scents will sweep you up, as will the Cambodian’s

confidence in their culture. Glimpse into the lives of locals in Angkor Ban

and marvel at the majesty of the Mekong at Wat Hanchey. At the gateway

of the Temples of Angkor, revel in a performance by the Phare Cambodian

Circus, before witnessing the famous Angkor Wat temple, known for its

elaborate decorations and intricate carvings.

MyanmarA country synonymous with bustling markets, exquisite pagodas and

Buddhist relics dating back to the 6th century, it’s no surprise that Rudyard

Kipling once described the country as ‘unlike any land you know about’.

Yangon’s unique contrast of British colonial architecture, modern high-rises

and Buddhist pagodas draw thousands of pilgrims annually. The serene

waters of Inle Lake, spectacular for its floating villages, encourage lessons

on the Intha people. And, Shwe san daw temple is a spectacular place

from which to enjoy the sunset, with its five terraces, cylindrical stupa and

bejewelled umbrella, overlooking Bagan below.

Originating from the confluence of the N’mai and Mali rivers, and emptying through the Irrawaddy Delta into the Andaman Sea, the Irrawaddy river is over 1,300 miles in length. Sometimes referred to as ‘the road to Mandalay’, after Rudyard Kipling’s poem, discovering the Irrawaddy is like travelling back In time, where hoof and muscle are used in place of machines, and western fashion sensibilities haven’t yet set root. For those looking for a ‘pure’ travel experience, this is it.

Experience the intriguing history and the diverse culture of the

Irrawaddy river from the cultural centre which is Mandalay to Yangon.

This former capital is home to the Shwedagon Pagoda, which dominates

the city’s skyline.

Our three incredible Irrawaddy itineraries offer you the chance to explore

areas rarely visited by westerners, many of which are inaccessible except

by river. Each port tells a story, from the 2,200 intricately carved temples in

Began, to the handmade pottery made in the village of Yandabo which is

floated down the Irrawaddy as is has been for hundreds of years.

Thousands of temples, pagodas and stupas pepper the landscape, and

along your journey of discovery you will visit sites both ancient and

colonial. From temples and markets to stunning pagodas, such as the

solid-gold Myat Than Lun Paya. Whilst ashore, you will venture deeper into

towns and villages, exploring on foot, by horse and oxcart and on-board

modern, well equipped coaches.

This is a region of breath-taking beauty and charm, steeped in fascinating

history and traditions. Truly an experience like no other.
