Our Kids I made a goal to read more this summer, and there is one
more book I want you to put on your reading list. It is called Our
Kids by Robert Putnam. He shares statistics and stories about
kids in different neighborhoods and educational settings. The
research tells us what we already know, but need to read.
If we want to change the world for Jesus Christ, we should start with the schools,
especially the schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods. If we want our church to
last into the future, we need to go build relationships with those rowdy kids who
get in trouble. We might discover their home life is in shambles and they are cry-
ing for help. What if we were the helping hands that taught them to read and to
sit in their seats? What if we told them they are smart and can achieve great
things, when all they hear at home is yelling and hurtful words? What if we spent
time with the shy kid who needs someone to be her advocate? We might just find
they will come to our churches to learn about the love of Christ that they are expe-
riencing through us. So many of our churches are filled with retirees who are per-
fect candidates to volunteer in schools.
If we want to grow the Kingdom of God, we need to make the school kids down
the street “Our Kids” for the glory of God and watch God change their lives and
ours. Alicia

It’s all about New
Churches! New Church
Starts reach people in
ways we may not reach
them in our mostly tradi-
tional services.
What is the Tour de TAC? It is
a total of 31 social and infor-
mational gatherings all across the annual conference to talk about starting new faith
communities for years to come. It’s also a series of bicycles rides in every district
across the conference.
What is the purpose of the Tour de TAC? To contribute to our culture of starting
new things all across the annual conference.
Who is invited to attend the gatherings? The Tour de TAC is for every United Meth-
odist clergy person and church member.
Who is invited to ride? We want as many people as possible to join in the rid-
ing. The shortest ride is about 15 miles. The longest is about 50! For safety reasons,
no one under 12 can be on the road and riders between 12 and 17 must have a
parent/guardian riding with them. All riders must wear a helmet and sign a waiv-
er. There is no charge for any ride.
Why a bike ride? Riding bikes across our conference does together does three
things. 1. It promotes interest in the Tour de TAC and church planting, 2. It promotes
good health habits, 3. and it gives us a fantastic opportunity for laughter and fellow-
ship.

Scholarship Fund Created in Wake of
Santa Fe Shooting The Jared Conard Black Scholarship Fund has been established to give sig-
nificant college scholarships to rising Santa Fe High School seniors who have
special needs.
Jared Conard Black, a student at Santa Fe High School and member of Al-
dersgate UMC, may have been taken away from his friends and family before
his time, but his name and memories will be remembered forever through
this fund. Pam Stanich, Jared’s mom, will help direct the fund and make de-
cisions on a group of individuals to review and award scholarships to appli-
cants each year.
On behalf of Jared’s mom and the rest of the Aldersgate United Methodist
Church family, we thank you in advance for your prayers and for your finan-
cial support toward this scholarship fund.

Apportionment Reminder Together we participate in the ministry and mission of the UMC in our communi-
ties and around the world. Apportionments are a vehicle of bringing God’s grace
and mercy into our churches, conference, and beyond. Commit to exceed last year’s
percentage, and strive to pay 100% by the year-end.
We want to congratulate the following churches for paying 100% of district AND conference apportionments. Great job!
Beaumont, Forest Park UMC Bleakwood, Watson Chapel UMC Devers UMC Port Arthur, Barnes Memorial UMC
We also appreciate these that have paid 100% of their district apportionments: Deweyville UMC; Kountze, First UMC; Liberty, South Liberty UMC; Lumberton, Woodcrest UMC; Nederland, Wesley UMC Orange, Wesley UMC; Port Arthur, St. John UMC; Port Neches, First UMC; High Is-land, St. Matthew UMC; and Warren UMC.
We are also proud of these that have paid 100% of their conference apportion-ments: Anauhauc, First UMC; Anauhauc, St. Paul UMC; and Magnolia Springs UMC.
As of the end of August, 32 churches are on pace or ahead in paying conference apportionments. Only 4 of our 51 churches have still paid $0 towards conference apportionments this year. Now is the time to make and act on a commitment to make regular payments!
We are happy that as a district we are 4% ahead of last year’s pace to pay confer-ence apportionments. Let’s keep up the good work!
Mark your calendar for these following conference and district events.
Hearn Lecture Series—“It’s About Jesus”
Presented by Bishop William H. Willimon October 21-22, 2018
Moody Methodist Church, Galveston
Jesus Christ is the point of Christianity. Christians believe that in the words and
deeds of Jesus Christ we have seen as much of God as we hope to see. To be a
Christian means constantly to be in conversation with Jesus and under his guid-
ance, judgement, and grace. All clergy and lay leaders are invited to attend at no
cost. Register by calling Moody Methodist Church at 409-744-4526.
