Southeastern Baptist Theo-logical Seminary became a reality on May 19, 1950, by a vote of the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Chi-cago, IL. To house the semi-nary, the Convention pur-chased the campus of Wake Forest College in Wake For-est, NC, recognized then and now as one of the most beautiful in the southeastern United States.

Over 2,000 students are cur-rently pursuing a degree in one of our Masters’ Pro-grams here at Southeastern. Students have the freedom to choose from a wide vari-ety of degree options to best fit their ministry goals.

Dear Future Student:

I do not mind telling you, right from the very beginning, that Southeastern is a dangerous place to attend seminary.

It is dangerous because we will challenge you—I will challenge you––to con-sider afresh your calling and what it is God wants you to do for His kingdom and His glory. At Southeastern we do not primarily ask, “Why should I go carry the gospel to the nations?” Rather, we ask, “Why should I stay in my homeland when there are so many who have not heard?”

That does not mean we believe eveyone is called to the international mission field. But many are, and all of our students, in every major, will be encouraged to think globally about their faith and their ministry, whatever their chosen vocation. You see, we are all to be Great Commission Christians! Whatever God chooses for you to do, we would love to have you study in Wake Forest with us. Southeastern features programs designed to strengthen and equip the future leaders of Christ’s church.

If your plan is to cruise through your degree program and get a cushy job in a comfortable place where there are no challenges or hardship, perhaps you had better think again about coming to Southeastern. Dr. Daniel Akin is the sixth president of Southeastern and is perhaps best known as a standard-bearer among evangelicals for expositional preaching. He is the author or editor of a number of books, including two major commentaries and a theology textbook, A Theology for the Church.

The faculty at Southeastern teach in accor-dance with, and not contrary to, the Ab-stract of Principles and the Baptist Faith & Message (2000). We also affirm the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy and the Danvers Statement on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. Here is my goal as Dean of Graduate Studies at Southeastern: to raise up men and women willing to drive back the darkness by taking the gospel to North America and the nations. What are the courSe FormatS For DiStance learning at SoutheaStern?

ONLINE COURSEInnovative online classes include engaging lectures and interaction through threaded discussions and live class meetings. You will receive the same content as our on-campus classes, but in a way that is accessible and convenient for your schedule. At Southeastern, every classroom is a Great Commission classroom, whether it is online or on campus. Our online classes will challenge you to have a heart for the nations and equip you to better serve in ministry.

HYBRID COURSESDistance students often desire to know their fellow students and profes-sors. Online classes provide ways to do this well. However, in order to keep the convenience of online classes and increase student interaction with classmates and professors, Southeastern launched the first-ever hybrid class in the Spring of 2009. These classes utilize online lectures and assign-ments, along with on-campus class time. For one weekend of the semester, students come for Friday and Saturday class meetings to provide a way to interact with other students and professors.

EXTENSION CENTERSThe same excellent faculty and adjunct professors teach on our main campus and at our extension centers. You will receive the same world-class education in a more convenient way. Southeastern operates several extension centers throughout the southeastern United States. Core classes and track requirements are offered at these centers and can be applied to-wards a Masters or Undergraduate degree. Extension center classes can be combined with online, hybrid, or 5 day break classes in order to earn your degree.

What Degree ShoulD imB perSonnel purSue?There are three Master’s degrees recommended for IMB personnel, and each degree is available completely online. These degrees are the Master of Divinity in International Church Planting, the Master of Arts in Church Planting, and the Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies. The Master of Arts in International Studies is available through the College at Southeastern. These Master’s degrees have been designed with IMB service requirements in mind and prepare students for overseas service.

A seminary degree is a major investment and Southeastern is true to our Southern Baptist heritage in striving to make theological education accessible to any student, regardless of income level. We do not want any graduate of Southeastern to leave here laden with debt.

SBc FunDing The Southern Baptist Cooperative Pro-gram is vitally important to us. Because of Southern Baptists’ faithful giving through the Cooperative Program, Southeastern offers a world-class educa-tion at a fraction of the cost of compa-rable schools.

FactS payment planThe FACTS Monthly Tuition Payment Plan is provided for students to be able to pay their current tuition and matricu-lation fees over the course of that semes-ter. The FACTS Plan is to be used only for current semester tuition and matricula-tion fees. This plan is not to be used for paying off past balances, future balanc-es, housing fees or used as a semester loan.

You must sign up for the FACTS plan each semester by the appropriate dead-lines if you desire to use the plan. FACTS specifies the date each payment will oc-cur, but it is your financial institution that determines the time of day the payment is debited. FACTS recommends you check with your financial institution to determine how far in advance funds should be deposited into your account to ensure the automatic payment clears.

employmentMost Southeastern students choose to work to support themselves and their families during their time here. Our Stu-dent Employment Services office stands ready to assist Southeastern students who have already been accepted into the school with job placement and job listing services. The office has developed close relationships with many of the major employers around Wake Forest and the Triangle and also maintains a database of student resumes. The office can assist students looking for part-time, tempo-rary employment or full-time profes-sional jobs.

ScholarShipSSoutheastern offers financial aid in a va-riety of areas. Our Financial Aid Office offers merit and need-based scholar-ships and can point students to a num-ber of scholarships offered by churches, states, associations and private organi-zations. We even offer some pet-friendly apartments for those bringing pets while attending Southeastern.

Women’s Life aims to serve the women of Southeastern and the local church by en-couraging them to live according to God’s design as established in his Word. Our purpose is to prepare women for ministry in their homes, churches and communities so that they will be better equipped to fulfill the Great Commission. We offer various opportunities for women to be involved on many levels of learning and growing during their time at Southeastern.

BiBlical Women’S inStituteWant to be equipped to minister to others in your home as well as in your church or other ministry settings? The Biblical Women’s Institute (BWI) offers non-degree pro-grams comprised of courses that are both practical and personally enriching. There are no prerequisites to enter the program. A majority of women in the program are seminary wives, but all women are encouraged to take courses. Also, we have devel-oped a program for women who are planning to serve overseas alongside their hus-bands who are in the International Church Planting program.

connecting pointConnecting Point is where all women of The College at Southeastern and Southeastern Seminary can connect and grow together. The main purpose of Connecting Point is to foster spiritual maturity and a better sense of community so that women will be en-couraged and challenged as they prepare for ministry.

BiBlical FounDationS For the miniSter’S WiFeDr. and Mrs. Danny Akin team up with several other relevant guest speakers to teach this class, which provides a survey of practical issues faced by ministers’ wives. It is offered free of charge. Class topics include marriage, raising godly children, minister-ing in your home, counseling women and other areas related to being a minister’s wife.

leaD {Women}LEAD helps both Southeastern female students and your church at the same time! For Southeastern students, LEAD is designed to provide invaluable experience and expo-sure in the arenas of public speaking and teaching. By emphasizing the impor-tance of preaching the word of God and learning from seasoned mentors, the Spurgeon Center seeks to further enhance the theological training of church planters and pastors in a practical way. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture resides at the intersection of theology and culture, forming a bridge between the two, and thereby bringing a Christian world-view to the issues and concerns of contemporary culture. Dedicated to providing a Christian voice in the public square both in content and in spirit, the CFC encourages conversation between those of differing opinions through the hosting of various lec-tures and events.

center For great commiSSion StuDieSThe God-given task of global mission has never been more challenging, and regardless of degree program, Southeastern is equipping students to be effective for Christ as they are exposed to God’s heartbeat for the world. The Center for Great Commission Studies exists as a leading part of our focus on the Great Commission here at South-eastern. By sponsoring mission trips that offer course credit, the CGCS provides an avenue for students to receive practical, multicultural and life-changing mission expe-rience while adding to their theological education. In addition, the CGCS offers many opportunities for students to engage in reaching the nations by hosting regular events and connecting them to visiting missionaries and church planters.

local churcheSWe don’t want you to lose the desire to serve the Church while you are a student in the Seminary. That’s why every Southeastern student is re-quired to be an active member of a local church during their time here.

Southeastern also makes ministry opportunities available for students on and off campus. Our chapel choir and orchestra are made up of stu-dents and their spouses. Prayer rooms dedicated to North American and international missions are regu-larly filled with students.

conFerenceSSoutheastern is committed to pro-viding experiences outside of the classroom that encourage lifelong learning and dedication to ministry excellence. Our conferences are a part of that strategy. Throughout the year, Southeastern hosts the 20/20 Collegiate Conference, 9Marks, and others, which attract people from across the Triangle

and around the nation to our cam-pus. Southeastern Students can at-tend these conferences for a re-duced rate. Speakers have included evangelical leaders like Matt Carter, Matt Chandler, J.D. Greear, Darrin Patrick, David Platt and our own president Daniel Akin.

StuDent activitieSStudent life at Southeastern offers something for everyone. Students and families flock to our outdoor barbecues twice a year, which fea-tures bounce houses for kids, games, time to visit with friends and make new ones and lots of free food. Coffee nights, held regularly throughout the semester, offer stu-dents a chance to relax from their studies. Our Student Life team sets up the big screen in the Ledford Stu-dent Center to host football and bas-ketball playoff parties.

Intramural sports at Southeastern generate a loyal following, offering leagues or tournaments in football, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, soccer, and much more.

leDForD centerWith spaces to eat, read, shop or re-lax, the Ledford Student Center is the hub of social life at Southeast-ern. You will definitely want to visit The Court, which features vintage photographs to classic brickwork. Every detail of The Court invites you to relax and unwind with coffee or a sandwich. Wireless internet access is available. You can also stop by The Locker, which sells all things Southeastern, or the LifeWay Cam-pus Store for your textbooks. Stu-dents and their families can take advantage of our fitness facilities, including rooms dedicated to free weights, weight machines and car-diovascular fitness. Ledford also of-fers racquetball courts and the Can-non gymnasium for basketball.

miniStry reFerralSoutheastern’s Ministry Referral Of-fice stands ready to connect church-es with ministers and ministers with churches. Students can submit their resumes to this office if they are in-terested in supply-preaching, inter-im preaching opportunities, church staff positions, and more. Ministry Referral will then assist students to find churches in need of help, mak-ing Southeastern a vital link be-tween the ministers and the church-es they serve.

chapelOur twice-weekly regular chapel services are the heart and soul of campus life. The singing and preach-ing serve to encourage students, faculty and staff as we worship Christ together. In addition to our own faculty and president, guest speakers regularly fill the Binkley Chapel pulpit.

Chapel is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. The public is always welcome, and prospective students are especially encouraged to attend. You can watch chapel messages via our live streaming and see past messages archived on our website.

miSSion tripSSoutheastern is not a sit-on-the-sidelines kind of school, and our stu-dents’ zeal to take the gospel to the ends of the earth is not confined to those enrolled in our Missions ma-jor. Every student is encouraged and equipped to go. That’s why Southeastern sponsors mission trips several times a year to coun-tries all over the globe. When you factor in all of the trips sponsored by individual faculty members and area churches, Southeastern stu-dents have many opportunities to go every year. In fact, our spring, summer, fall and winter breaks are filled with chances to share the gos-pel with the nations.

Trips sponsored by Southeastern are available for class credit, offer-ing students the chance to get prac-tical, multicultural missions experi-ence in the context of their educa-tion.

A close-knit community with a world of opportunity just minutes away, Wake Forest and the Triangle area offer something for everyone.

Wake Forest is a unique opportunity with a thriving downtown, where you can walk just about anywhere to shop, eat, have coffee, or simply visit. Wake Forest was born as a college town and for more than a century the town and the college have grown up together with intertwined histories. The original 1830s campus, called Wake Forest College, has changed owners and names, but remains a geographical focus of the community that has grown around it. Historic homes, some nearly 200 years old, decorate the downtown streets surrounding Southeastern’s campus and give the town a genuine neighborhood feel. The downtown streets feature coffee and tea shops, specialty boutiques, restaurants, and much more.

While proud of its history, Wake Forest is also a town of the future. The area teems with dozens of restaurants and major nationally-known chains, as well as locally-owned establishments. Several large grocery stories serve the town, and a number of major retail chains including Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s, have stores in Wake Forest. In 2009, the town of Wake Forest was listed by the Gadberry Report as in the top ten nationally for high-growth areas in the midst of recession.

Wake Forest is located at the northern tip of a metropolitan area commonly called the Triangle, consisting of the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Home to more than 1.2 million residents, the Triangle is one of the fastest growing metro regions in the country. The Triangle offers its residents numerous employment, educational and recreational opportunities. The well-known colleges of Duke, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University pepper the Triangle area, bringing to it a vibrant and active college life.
