The AROC Essex Section is hosting Southern Alfa
Day this year, and have chosen the Royal
Gunpowder Mills near Waltham Abbey as the
venue. They welcome all members to the historic
site to enjoy the many displays and exhibitions. It is
spread over a large area as buildings were
separated due to the materials being processed
and wildlife now thrives on the site. The many
attractions include the Rocket Vault and the
Armoury and Land Train Tours of the site are
available for a small fee. In addition, there will be
an Italian Market with Pizza Oven too, then of
course, our cars will be on display as a big
attraction too!
Members’ entry prices are:- pre-paid Adults £8.00,
children (5 to 15) £6.00, (Use AROC-UK.COM ) On
the gate (CASH ONLY) – adults £10, children (5 to
15) £7.00. NOTE; for Alfas to park together you
must buy a ticket in advance!
EAST MIDLANDS SECTION CONVOY DRIVE
Just like National Alfa Day in July, we will meet at
the Rothwell Services on the A14 just after J4
(McDonalds) ready to depart a bit after 8:30, We
will cruise down the A14/A1 then round the M25 a
bit to J26 and A121 to Waltham Abbey.
We will do our best to park together there as a
Section Group with our flags etc. We expect it to be
a really good day. Do come along!
This front page had been due to advertise the
Leicester Aero Club members’ day we had been
invited to on 9 September. Sadly I was contacted
by one of their committee a few days ago by email
to advise that as it is a much smaller event than the
old Open Days we’d attended for 10 years, they
could not accommodate us in any area air-side,
Very disappointing and apologies if you were
looking forward to this. They said we’d be welcome
at any Open Day if they happen again. Happily we
are not exactly short of stuff to do as a car club, as
you will see here and inside!
There’s a short write up on MITCAR inside and a
number of photos. There will be a longer item in the
next Club magazine and of course there are
hundreds of photos on our website and various
AROC Facebook groups, including a video. Suffice to
say many people appear to have really enjoyed it,
and much of that is down to the efforts our
volunteer helpers on the day. The friendly meet and
greet, direction giving and neat organised display
parking really is the secret to making these work.
Having a great venue helps too. If you have any
ideas for next year do let me know.
Anyway, there is now opportunity at ‘SoAD’ for all
the helpers to enjoy a car show as a true ‘punter’!
That should be another enjoyable
day. See you at the G&D! John

ALFA ROMEO BACK IN THE BTCC IN 2018
More accurately Handy Motorsport and a
Giulietta, with driver Rob Austin who has
done a decent job for a few seasons racing
a Toyota Avensis. BTCC is very much a
silhouette formula now, the cars sharing
many common components, inc engines,
suspension, brakes and gearboxes. but it
will be fun to see an Alfa out. AROC will be
sponsoring too. organising a presence at
most of the rounds. It is all on ITV4 of
course. Lots more next time.
CHINESE INTEREST IN FCA REJECTED
The speculation about a possible Chinese
purchase of FCA began to run amok in
August but Lingotto has officially halted
it. Some Chinese producers themselves
denied it, but when car producer Great
Wall was linked to a possible acquisition of
the (strategically important) Jeep brand,
FCA decided to reject in an official press
release. Now, this doesn't mean change is
off… Marchionne has always said that
such a partnership is a must for the
production of cars in the biggest
segments, and with GM selling Opel, a
merger with the remaining GM operation is
a possibility, as could a split-off of Alfa and
Maserati (like Ferrari) before. It will be
interesting...

STELVIO Open Day At Chris Variava, Nottingham. Saturday 9 September
Paul Jones, Brand Manager and one of our
Section team, has invited us all over to the
showrooms on Saturday to have a good look at
the Right hand drive example of the new
Stelvio. With luck there will be a second one
that is road registered for test drives too.
Though the doors are always open, if you
can let me know if you plan to go along that will
help.
If you are interested in a test drive, or one of
any another new Alfa model, just give any of
the guys in the sales team a call in advance -
you may well recognise them from our events!
Matthew, Aaron, Thomas in particular. The
number is 0115 855 3040. The coffee and
cakes will definitely be on hand anyway!
The photos here are from our MITCAR event in
August, one taken very early on and one very late,
so the cars aren’t surrounded!

ALFISTI - AROC East Midlands Section Newsletter September 2017- Issue 201
Plan a Barbecue in England in August and you can be
pretty certain of some rain. Happily for us it was only for
10 minutes and before the grub had really got going! Still
the ‘iffy’ weather forecast did not prevent a super
attendance of over 50 people again in a lovely variety of
Alfas as you can see in the photos here.
Chef Paul and team did a great job providing some
fantastic burgers and giant jumbo sausages, top quality
stuff and at a real bargain price.
We were delighted to welcome new members Ian Livett
(MiTo) and Matt Cox (1750GTV) along, plus another visit
from Rev Patrick Coleman - Vicar for the Church with
Crooked Spire in Chesterfield! Patrick was last along a
couple of years back with his red Giulietta LE, well this
time he’d literally just collected his brand new Giulia
Veloce from Aaron at Chris Variava’s. In dark Montecarlo
Blue with tan leather it looked terrific. (See back page).
On the topic of Giulia, there’s been a string of comments
about the centre drain hole from the windscreen scuttle -
basically it allows water to go straight down into the engine bay (in most cases
no big deal) but it gives us fanatics something to tinker with! Orthodonist Sal
Vitale has manufactured a perfect-fit rubber bung for his - and has taken a few
orders from the rest of us owners now!
I must also mention the Giuliettas. Early on (pre-shower) we had 4 all parked
together and all in Etna Black! Alan, Nicki and Steve, Alex and Dean arriving
close together! Alfas being Alfas, no 4 the same version though! Also in
Giuliettas, Duncan and Jason Hood and Jason Drury, the latter with a new
Speciale version on the way. More on that next time.
At the top end of our paddock area, mysteriously left un-mowed (Brian is
having a word!) we had two red Bertones belonging to the aforementioned
Matt and Peter Haynes. Bryan Alexander was along too in his Spider 3.0 V6,
along with daughter, son in law and his grandson Joe who was driving his just
acquired black Mito. A proper family gathering with a new Alfista in the ranks!
(See back page.)
Sadly I don’t have space to mention everyone, but I should mention young
Beth (Bethan), who works at the G&D. She has been so impressed with our
Alfa enthusiasm at the meetings that she’s gone and bought a lovely white
MiTo! Great to welcome her into our band - and at MITCAR of course.
Thanks as ever to all who came along, and to the G&D team of course - the
food was fab. Very enjoyable as ever!
Next time at the G&D it’s the Twilight Drive - you can bet he sun will be out all
night for that! John

The 17th edition of MITCAR was held at the
beautiful estate of Ragley Hall. Around 400
Italian cars of all shapes and sizes attended the
car show held in the vast eastern park area, whilst
to the west of the house the International Model
Air Show was taking place, an exciting addition to
the whole MITCAR day.
As per usual, Alfa Romeos were the most
popular marque with lines of beautifully presented
cars including the new Giulias, with 916 series
GTVS and Spiders given a large area and pre-
1990 Classics too. It was superb to see so many
earlier models. We had a raft of ‘exotics’ near the
house, including Ferraris and Maseratis and some
more very special Alfas including Clive
Richardson’s past MITCAR prize winning 8C and
two ES30 SZs, plus three beautiful V8 Montreals,
a super-rare OSCA Maserati too.
The Fiat Motor Club, Fiat Panda club and Fiat
Forum had a great collection of cars too - Abarths
were there again in big numbers, including some
of the new 124s, and we were delighted by a
strong showing on Lancias, including four lovely
Beta Montecarlos and four Integrales, several
Fulvias, even a Gamma, a Y10 and a Dedra!
Event sponsors Chris Variava had secured one of
the first new Alfa Romeo Stelvios to be seen in the
UK too which drew much attention. It’s really
impressive car - more in the next edition on that
when we get the chance to drive one. This LHD
Press car was strictly not to be driven! Anyway
Alfas newest was fronted by a lovely collection of
14 Alfa 4Cs, surprisingly more than present at
National Alfa Day this year.
Trying to choose prize winners was incredibly
challenging for the organisers, Brian Smith did a
very good job in narrowing it down I have to say.
Walking around with him it was plain there were
many fabulous cars, but the main award is chosen
by public vote, as per tradition - and the winner by
a clear margin was superb white Series 1 Alfa
‘Duetto’ owned by Gary Plumb.
I didn't get to see the planes on Sunday, but did
for a while on Saturday Set-up day. They were sily
amazing! The quarter-scale jets—flown in
formation - staggering. The Lightning made nearly
as much racket as areal one, and the mock
dogfights, complete with ack-ack, were just
superb! They ‘pilots’ have my genuine admiration.
Happily it stayed dry right through the day, and
we had bright sunshine all morning too which will
have helped the attendance. It only rained as I
was putting the flags away at 5.30, despite
warnings of remnants of a hurricane coming in!
Using the balcony bit on the new Alfa display unit
for the awards was fun, though with a loudhailer it
felt a bit like some weird rally - though I guess it
was of sorts - haha!
Anyway huge thank you from me to all of our
helpers on the day who made it all work so well.
The feedback on Social Media has been terrific,
real testament to all that hard work put in.
Thanks to the many from our Section too who
attended making it so enjoyable. I;ve tried to
capture members cars in this feature as best
poss, sorry if some missing, they should be on our
website.
MITCAR will return…

‘OUR CARS’ SPECIAL Matt Cox’s 1750 GTV
Ferrari 70th Birthday
Celebrations
at Belvoir Castle Colin Davenport
From an email to John:
At the end of July I went to a celebration
of 'Gray Paul' - part of the National
70th celebrations.
Ferraris from all over the country
turned up! About 130 or so. I have
never seen so many in one place at the same time - spectacular!
The star of the show was the LaFerrari Aperta (Black car pictured) being one of only 200 made, but
my favourite was a 912 (?) from the 1950s that belonged to a chap in Long Clawson.
Sadly Belvoir Castle was not the best location for the event. Picturesque yes, but not enough room
for all the cars which were squashed into a small area. I believe the event started in the morning with
a free lunch for the owners but the publicity stated that the public were allowed in from about 3pm. I
believe they got more 'public' than they anticipated and people were still arriving at 5pm when we left.
From a logistics viewpoint, the public parking was a total shambles, the drinks, food and toilet
facilities were appalling and service at the coffee vending van was way too slow, leading to long
queues and the circulation area around the cars was too tight. I thought some cars may get damaged
when wheel chairs went round! Generally very poorly organised - they could do with attending an
AROC event to see how well things can be done. Anyway, we didn't get to the road parade through
Nottingham but I believe it too was very crowded. However, overall it was well worth going just for the
'Laferrari Aperta'. These will be locked away for ever never to be seen on the road.
If any other Alfisti are considering visiting the few remaining celebration events then I would
definitely suggest going to see the cars. There are several other sites around the country.
Best regards, Colin

ALFISTI - AROC East Midlands Section Newsletter September 2017- Issue 201
From an email to John:
Hi John - At the Barbecue night we actually bumped into two other people we
knew, Peter with the 1600 Junior I recognised from the Porsche Owners Club
and HRCR, and Roger with his Spider. Lorraine has known him for a while and
he and his wife came to my 40th a few years ago, so we had a great night.
I have been impressed by the events you organise, will definitely be up for
some of those. In my Caterham days we used to hire Curborough every year
with the local group but haven't been back since I sold that in 2008. Will
hopefully make it to MITCAR on Sunday as well.
Thanks for the comments on my car, I only got it on the 5th August so all
very new to me, and I purchased it from Northumberland.
So what do I know about it. Well the previous owner got it in 2008 I
understand. At that point it was grey and thanks to Stuart Taylor of AROC (who
I was put into contact by some other members of the club) I know it had
history with the Club until around 1998 when it disappeared. Stuart also sent
me the last picture he had on file for it in grey - attached.
After a year or so Mike (previous owner) had it bare metal resprayed and
various panels replaced by Bonello Auto Services in Newcastle where it was
apparently finished and MOT’d on the same afternoon that ferry tickets were
booked and it was taken straight to the ferry and driven to the Alfa Romeo
100 year anniversary in Milan! Didn't miss a beat apparently.
Following that trip I understand it wasn't used an awful lot, it actually spent
2 years in the Alfa dealer in Newcastle alongside a 4C. I first saw the car for
sale in March this year but was still in the process of selling my Porsche
Cayman so couldn't purchase it at the time but I contacted him anyway to get
his contact details and it transpired that it wasn't quite ready to sell as it
needed a few MOT repairs, so 5 months later (not all MOT related!) we drove
up to Newcastle and did the deal! Driving it home 210 miles the next day
(didn't miss a beat) where I was blown away by the interest you get from other
motorists and pedestrians alike.
Whilst it had been maintained pretty well it hadn't really been "loved" or
used in anger recently, so after a trip to Loughborough the day after I brought
it home where it wouldn't start I then decided to swop to Alfaholics solid carb
mounts and electronic ignition then stripped and cleaned the carbs, fitting
carburettor service kits. So on the Monday before my first Club night I got him
("Blofeld") running again and balanced the carbs and was happy.
Body wise he’s is very good, just needs a few hours with the DA polisher and
a decent quality wax. Interior is nicely patina'd but needs tidying and a few
detail points adding. It will get an Alfaholics handling kit over winter and the
typical GTA alloys, I know everyone uses them but they look so good when
lowered a little!
I have a few ideas for the engine, not necessarily power orientated, more
about reliability and efficiency, but that won't be for a while yet.
The Bertone joins my 2001 Lotus Elise S2 and Lorraine's 1989 MX5 in the
garage. So that's about it really, Mike unfortunately lost all the previous
invoices and paperwork during a couple of house moves but the condition
supports what I have been told and I have seen pictures of the bare metal
respray. Really looking forward to working on it, and of course driving it with
the other local owners.
Thanks again for the note and I look forward to having a chat at one of the
next events.
Cheers, Matt
(Matt’s 1750 GTV joins several other Bertone coupés in the Section. We will
plan to get them all together at some point! John)
Above - Matt’s 1750 GTV in its new guise - and right, how it was a few years back.
Ceramic / Nano Coatings
Scientific stuff! Most Alfa Romeo dealers will offer to coat your new
purchase in a special protective sealant, often referred to as
‘Ceramic’ or ‘Nano’ technology. They can be applied to older cars
too and some are marketed for home application now, often ona
‘light’ form (less long lasting,) There are now many on the market,
many demand trained professional application, for example
Gtechniq Crystal Serum. The coatings are for all surfaces including
glass and trim, seats and carpets, not just paint, but we’ll
concentrate on paint. The coatings provide a thin hard barrier against the elements. Compared to
their traditional counterparts, waxes and polymer sealants, they offer a greater resistance to
chemicals meaning a stronger pre-wash can be used to remove dirt along with a jet wash without
having to physically touch the paint. Some of the coatings are marketed as “scratch proof”, more
accurately they should be called “marring resistant”; whereby increased paint hardness combined
with slickness of coating leads to a major reduction in wash-related marring. They are also ‘semi-
permanent’, with 12 month to lifetime warranties available, Weaknesses? They are comparatively
difficult to apply for a first-time user and all coatings require more preparation than traditional wax.
The names; Some are referred to as ceramic coatings, quartz coatings, or nano coatings. These are
basically used to describe the same thing: a coating based on modified SiO2 silane (Silicone
Dioxide) with the names stemming from Quartz Silica SiO2 used in the process, which is found in
high quantities in glass and ceramics in everyday lives. Most manufacturers tweak the formula with
extra additives (“hybrid technologies”) which can alter the characteristics.
The ceramic coatings form a super-strong bond with the surface just 1 or 2 microns thick. The
adhesion is vital, so the surface must be perfectly prepared. Even a new vehicle needs a major
clean down. Some retail versions are sold with special cleaners to remove old wax and coatings. I
applied a BMW dealer ceramic coating on my Giulia in March when it was new. As with most types
it was a 2 stage job (after a massive cleaning session - even on the new car!) The first layer the
core bond, left to cure then the final shell layer applied on top in straight lines. Left to cure too, a
new thick microfibre lightly buffed the finish to a glass-like perfection. What’s it been like in
practice? Well, excellent. The dirt sticks less, but the most incredible thing is that resistance to
marring. The paint nearly 6 months on looks just brand new! I still need to wash the car (it doesn’t
stop that) - and you can still put a top coat of wax or sealant on for even more bling though that’s
not really necessary, for extra gloss you can use a good Quick Detailer spray.
Looking at other new Giulias that have had the pro-application in our Section I’m happy to say
mine’s just as good. Another happy customer is Brian
Smith who’s 4C had some pro paint correction and a
coating applied at a year old - and it still looks great
another year on. (Pictured here being exercised!)
Pro-application costs between £250 and £500
(“Lifetime”); a home-applied ceramic paint coating
(e.g. the new Sonax Profiline kit (3 year protection, 2
stage plus cleaner) is around £90, and G-Techniq
Crystal Serum Light (1 stage) around £65. Worth it?
If you are fanatical about paint finish, definitely. John

A mini feature for Classic owners, and we’ve
welcomed a few more into our Club recently.
If you have just bought a new –to-you Classic Alf
Romeo, especially if it qualifies for free road
tax, you may need to have its exact manufacturing

the big double sunroof, which coupled with
the car’s dark grey alloys give it a fabulous
look. Will be great in our line ups!

Our Alfas Spider 2.0 TS Warren Evans
From an email to John:
On 30 July I showed my Spider at the
Beaumanor Hall Classic Car show at
Woodhouse Eves. I put on a little display of
items and I had a lot of interest. Most people
said how beautiful the Alfa was and that you
hardly ever see them on the road. I even let
two young boys have a sit in her, and by the
look on there faces they loved it. Sadly she
didn't win her class. Cheers, Warren
Giulietta Speciale JTDm TCT Duncan Langford
Duncan picked up some rim damage on his
Giulietta recently, so it was off to the Wheel
Specialists in Leicester for repair and a full
colour change. Going for a darker gunmetal
grey Dunk has also added a set of
‘AlloyGators’ in red to protect the edge and
add a touch of colour - matching the car’s red-
strip inlays front and rear. Looking good.
Spider 3.2 V6 Andy Thorley
Andy took his delightful Spider on a proper
road trip this summer, right down to Sicily,
and back. Here his car is pictured on the
return leg in Tuscany, specifically with the
beautiful hilltop town of San Gimignano over
its shoulder. Andy was absolutely delighted
with the car which didn’t miss a beat in over
3,000 miles. The 939 series, especially the
long-striding 3.2 4x4 was always made for
this type of continental cruising of course,
only Andy says fuel costs were a tad high!
Giulietta 2.0 JTDm Veloce Ade Diaper
Ade has recently swapped his MiTo for this
new machine. The Giulietta has the torquey
140hp motor that gives a brilliant balance of
performance and easy 50 plus mpg economy.
With smart tinted windows and Cloverleaf
wing badges it certainly looks the part too.
He’s got a few jobs to sort out like prettying
up the ‘aftermarket’ front parking sensors,
but nothing major. We all like the odd bit of
fettling to make our Alfas feel like ours of
course!
Giulia Veloce Rev Patrick Coleman
Patrick has ben to a couple of our meetings
before, and we were delighted to see him with
his 3-hour-old Giulia at the Barbecue night!
He’d just picked it up from Aaron at Chris
Variava and took ‘the long way’ over to
Thringstone. He did have to to fit his AROC
Screen sticker first though!
