A thrilling come-from-behind win in week one against Southwestern Okla-homa and a convincingly dominant defensive effort in week two at Northwestern Oklahoma has the Southern Arkansas football team 2-0 on the young season for the first time since the 2012 season when the Muleriders finished the year 8-3 and played in their first post-season game since 2003 with an appearance in the Heart of Texas Bowl against McMurry. The quick and successful start to the 2015 season for the Muleriders sets up a pivotal early season clash with nationally-ranked #16/17 Harding University, who also enters the game unbeaten at 2-0 after vicories over GAC newcomer Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene. The Muleriders have not beaten Harding in over a decade with the last win over the Bisons coming in the 2003 season. While not playing every year since 2003, the Bisons have won the last nine matchups with four of those contests taking place in Magnolia.

Team Information

2015 Harding Oklahoma Schedule

SCHEDULE The Harding University Bisons football team enters tonight’s game with a 2-0 overall record and a 2-0 record in the Great American Conference. The Bisons opened the season with a 20-19 overtime win at Oklahoma Baptist and then rolled past Southern Nazarene 42-0 in their home-opener. It is the third time in the last four years that Harding has begun a season 2-0.

THE COACH The Bisons are coached by Ronnie Huckeba, who enters into his ninth season as head coach at Harding while also entering his 30th overall season with the Bisons. In his time as head coach at Harding, Huckeba has amassed a 51-35 overall record. Over half of those wins have come in the last four years as Coach Huckeba has led the Bisons to a 29-6 record since the start of the 2012 season. In the three seasons prior to this current one, Harding has gone 9-2 each year and have made a post-season apprearance with two coming in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE

Offensively, the Bisons run the throwback Flexbone style that prominently features the running game and the deceptive triple option. Under that system, the Bisons have established one of the nation’s most-prolific rushing attacks ranking among the top-5 in Division II at season’s end each year since 2010. Last year, the Bisons were second in DII in rushing as they averaged 371.7 yards per game.

This year, the Bisons are forced to replace nine starters on offense including their entire offensive line as well as skill posi-tions at QB, slot back, full back, and wide receiver.

Coming into this game, Harding is averaging 420.0 yards of total offense per game with 283.0 of that being gained on the ground and 137.0 through the air. The leading rusher for Harding is QB Park Parish as he has gained 199 yards and has a team-high four rushing TDs. Parish has only attempted 13 passes but has completed eight of them for 253 yards and a TD. Behind Parish in rushing is starting slot back and reigning GAC Freshman of the Year Zach Shelley with 131 yards and one TD.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE Defensively, the Bisons run a 4-2-5 scheme and enter the game

allowing just 219.0 ypg of total offense from their opponents as well as holding them to just 9.5 ppg. The Bisons are also coming off a game in which the defense held Southern Nazarene score-less and to a miniscule 202 yards of total offense.

The leading tackler for the Bisons is Daylan Skidmore with 17 stops. Chris Sarkissian and Madison Firmin are the other two defenders with double-digit tackles.

As a defense, Harding has forced three turnovers (two INTs) and have totaled five sacks and 21 tackles for lost yardage.

THE SERIES This will be the 52nd meeting all-time between Southern Arkan-

sas and Harding with the series now tied at 25-25-1. In recent history, however, the series has been dominated by Harding as they have won the last nine meetings dating back to 2006 and the last win for SAU in the series came in 2003.

SEARCY, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas football team traveled to Searcy on Saturday looking to knockoff No. 15-ranked Harding University on their home field, but the road upset in front of Family Day-sized crowd was not to be as SAU fell to Harding by a score of 56-13 at First Security Field. The Muleriders (2-3, 2-3 GAC) got first crack at an offensive possession as the Bisons (4-0, 4-0 GAC) won the toss, but deferred their option to the second half. SAU, however, was unable to do anything on that opening drive, being forced to go three-and-out. Following the punt, the Bisons would take the ball 53 yards on four plays for the game’s first score. The Bisons’ lead would grow to 14-0 three minutes later as Keenan Kellett com-pleted a 64-yard touchdown pass to Donatella Luckett. Harding would try to pass on their next two offensive possessions, but each pass attempt went into the arms of a Mulerider defensive back as the SAU’s defense provided a spark. The Muleriders would pull to with a score, 14-6, with 29 seconds left in the first quarter as they turned the second of those picks into points on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Si Blackshire to Aaron Johnson on the first play of that drive. Blackshire and Johnson would connect again with 1:13 left in the second quarter, this time for a 49-yard score, making it a 28-13 game at the time. The Bisons, however, would answer back quickly to that Mulerider score with a 61-yard touchdown run by Zach Shelly with just 20 seconds left in the half. The Bisons would go on to shutout the Muleriders in the second half while adding three more touchdowns to their total, bringing the final score to 56-13. Offensively, the Muleriders would gain 391 yards of total offense with 259 of those yards coming through the air. Blackshire, who accounted for all of the passing yards, would complete 22-of-31 passes including a pair of touchdowns and an interception. Both touchdown grabs were hauled in by Johnson, who finished with 104 yards on four catches. Luke Lansdell led the defense with 10 total tackles (five assisted, five solo), fol-lowed by A,J. Steele with eight (two solo, six assisted). Safeties James Thurston and DeMario Thomas accounted for the Muleriders forced turnovers as each had an interception.

muleriders reCord wHen... “it’s our time” With the departure of several househould names within the Great American Conference ranks including the starting quarterbacks at Harding, Henderson State, and Ouachita, it appears that landscape that has been the top of the GAC over the last three-to-four years may be in for a shakeup in 2015. While the Muleriders are among those that will feature a new starting quarterback, head coach Bill Keopple feels that his 2015 team may be the most talented team in his tenure and feels that this year is when the Mulerid-ers make their move to assert themselves as the class of the GAC; rallying his team on a single mantra since spring ball; “It’s Our Time.”

.500 or better tHree years runninG

Last season, the Muleriders finished the year 5-5 over their 10-game sched-ule to give them a .500 winning percentage. That marked the third-straight season in which the Muleriders have finished with a .500 winning percentage or better. In those three years, the Muleriders are 19-12 overall for a .613 winning percentage, which marks the best three-year stretch ar SAU since 2002-04.

fountain of youtH

After losing over 25 seniors a year ago, the Muleriders appear to have found the ever-elusive fountain of youth heading into the 2015 season as an overwhelming majority of the roster will be underclassmen. This season, the Muleriders will field only 20 upperclassmen with 12 of those being seniors. While the Muleriders will be young in terms of experience, they figure to be a talented bunch all the same. Listed among the preseason two-deep, the Muleriders have 28 underclassmen that are projected to either be a starter or backup in 2015.

neGatively Good

Last week, the Southern Arkansas defensive unit flexed their muscle and completly dominated against Northwestern Oklahoma State as the Mulerid-ers allowed just 210 yards of total offense to the Rangers, who hung over 450 yards the week prior against Arkansas-Monticello. Helping the total offense total go so low was the Muleriders holding the Rangers to -22 net rushing yards. The negative rushing total in that game was the lowest the Muleriders had allowed in rushing since the 2005 season when they held East Texas Baptist University to -8 rushing yards.

last time it HappenedstopinG tHe triple-option

While SAU turned in a tremendous defensive effort against the running game last week and have limited their opponents to just 63.0 yards per game through the first two games, the Muleriders will likely have their run defense tested the most all year this weekend as they take on the nearly run-excusive Triple-Option attack that Harding prominently features on offense. In the last four years, Harding has rushed for an average of 391.8 yards per game against the Muleriders with their lowest output coming in 2012 when SAU limited the Bisons to 127 yards on the ground.

no one tHe weis(Heit)er

Sophomore wide receiver Jonathan Weisheit got his 2015 season off to a great start as he shined in multiple roles for the Muleriders. As a wide receiver, Weisheit has hauled in 15 receptions for 302 yards with a pair of touchdowns. His 302 total receiving yards tops the GAC and ranks third in NCAA DII. Additionally, his 151.0 receiving yards per game also leads the GAC and ranks fourth in DII.

playinG niCkel baCk is Cool

Senior defensive back Chris Wilson has made the move to Nickel Back in the Muleriders’ revamped defensive scheme and through the first two games of the year, Wilson appeared to take to the new position just fine. Wilson has racked up 9.0 total tackes with 3.5 going for lost yardage. Additionally, Wilson broke up five passes and had a quarterback hurry as well. His five pass breakups has him tied with teammate Darren Crawford for the GAC lead as well as being ranked fifth in DII.

defensive stand outs

Through the first two games of the year, the Southern Arkansas defense has showed marked improvement from a year ago. So far this year, the Muleriders have allowed 19.0 points per game and 276.5 yards of total offense per game. Last year, through two games, the Muleriders were allowing 38.0 points per game and 454.5 yards of total offense per game. One of the areas that has been spearheading this early season turnaround has been the play of the defensive line. So far this season, the defensive line has combined for 38 total tackles with 12.0 being for lost yardage and 7.0 com-ing via the sack. Leading that charge so far has been redshirt freshman Davondrick Lison as he is second on the team in tackles with 11 and is first in tackles for loss (4.5) and sacks (2.5).

Southern Arkansas University2015 MULERIDER FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Week 3 | vs. #16/17 Harding | Sept. 19 | 6 P.M.

Bill Keopple enters into his seventh season as the head football coach at Southern Arkansas. In his time at SAU, Keopple has amassed a 26-35 overall record with 19 of those wins com-ing over the last three seasons. In that time, Keopple has guided the Mulerider football program to a .500 winning percentage or better each year, highlighted by an 8-3 year in 2012 which saw the Muleriders make their first post-season appearance since 2003. The .613 winning percentage over that time is the best three-year stretch at SAU 2002-04. In his time at SAU, Keopple has coached 32 all-conference players, 12 all-academic players, 10 all-region players, and four all-America players. Last season in 2014, Keopple’s Muleriders continued the trend of fielding a high-octane offense as the unit ranked first in the Great American Conference (GAC) and 10th overall in NCAA DII in total offense at 505.4 yards per game. Additionally, the offense would average 38.7 points per game to rank third in the GAC and 21st in DII. The year prior in 2013, SAU’s offense ranked in the top-50 nationally in passing offense (281.1 ypg | 35th), scoring offense (35.9 ppg | 39th), and in total offense (433.8 ypg | 47th). In 2012, the Muleriders ranked nationally in the top-25 in in total offense (497.6 ypg | 5th), passing of-fense (310.7 ypg | 12th), passing efficiency (151.28 | 22nd), sacks al-lowed (1.1 spg | 23rd), and scoring offense (37.1 ppg | 24th). Over the past three seasons,

the Muleriders have averaged 37.2 points per game, 479.5 yards of total offense per game, 298.8 passing yards per game, and 180.7 rushing yards per game. While Keopple’s high-powered offenses over the past three seasons have taken many of the headlines, his defensive unit has enjoyed outstanding success as well in his time at SAU. In 2012, Keopple’s defense led the GAC and ranked sixth nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 91.4 yards per game. In 2013, the Muleriders’ defense would force 26 turnovers, ranking them 44th in DII. Sixteen (16) of those forced turnovers came via the interception as SAU ranked 33rd nationally in passes intercepted on defense. Keopple’s recent success at SAU comes as no surprise as his previous coaching experience includes Division I assistant coaching stints at Arkansas, Boise State, and Central Arkansas. In addition to his extensive previous collegiate coaching experience, Keopple spent the six seasons prior to coming to SAU as the head coach at Arkansas High in Texarkana. While at Arkansas High, Keopple he led his teams to two consecutive state championships 2006 and 2007. Overall, Keopple amassed a 44-26-1 record during his six seasons. In 2006, Ke-opple was honored as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year. That same year, he was also named as the 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation, a feat he would repeat in 2007. Keopple was also selected to serve on the high school football

All-Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007. Before taking over the reins at

Texarkana, Keopple spent the 2002 season at the University of Tulsa on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns’ staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line

and serving as recruiting coordina-tor for the Hurricanes.

Keopple served as an as-sistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999 and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coach-ing the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks

were 1998 SEC Western Divi-sion champions and finished

Last year, Keopple’s offense ranked first in the Great American Conference (GAC) and 10th overall in NCAA DII in total offense at 505.4 yards per game. In 2012, the Muleriders ranked nationally in the top-25 in in total offense (497.6 ypg | 5th), passing offense (310.7 ypg | 12th), passing efficiency (151.28 | 22nd), sacks allowed (1.1 spg | 23rd), and scoring offense (37.1 ppg | 24th).

While serving as the offensive coordinator, Keopple has simul-taneously worked as the quarterbacks coach at SAU. In that role, Keopple mentored record-setting quarterback and two-time All-GAC recipient Tyler Sykora. Under Keopple’s tutelage, Sykora steadily improved each season and ended his career at SAU holding 17 school records, many of which are career marks. Most recently, Keopple guided Skyora’s successor Si Blackshire to an All-GAC Honorable Mention campaign in which Blackshire ranked ninth individually in DII in Total Offense at 331.1 ypg. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Keopple is also the academic coordinator for football. On the recruiting trail, Keopple covers Little Rock, West Arkansas, Texarkana and the North East Dallas metro area. Prior to his position at SAU, Keopple was at Ouachita Baptist University where he spent the 2007 and 2008 season as a graduate assistant in charge of the wide receivers. Upon gradu-ating from OBU, Pruitt was signed as undrafted free agent by the Miami Dolphins. In his time at OBU, Keopple also helped the Tigers to their first winning season in 25 years. Before OBU, Keopple spent the 2006 season at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, working as an assistant coach under his father, current Southern Arkansas Head Coach Bill Keopple. While there, L. Keopple worked with the receivers at Arkansas High and helped guide the team to the 6A state championship. As a prep player, Keopple was an Arkansas All-State quarterback at Fayetteville High School in 2000. Afterwards, he attended the University of Central Arkansas in the fall of 2001 on a golf scholar-ship before transferring to the University of Tulsa in the spring of 2002. While at Tulsa, Keopple was a three-year letterman in football and served as team captain his senior season of 2005 when Tulsa won the Conference USA championship against Central Florida. The Hurricane defeated Fresno State in the Liberty Bowl that same year, and Keopple also played in the 2003 Humanitarian Bowl against Georgia Tech. Keopple received his B.B.A. in accounting with a minor in eco-nomics from Tulsa in 2006 and a Masters in sports administration from Henderson State in 2009. Southern Arkansas University2015 MULERIDER FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Week 3 | vs. #16/17 Harding | Sept. 19 | 6 P.M.

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – In his first collegiate start, redshirt freshman quarterback Barrett Renner hooked up with sophomore wide out Jonathan Weisheit from 75 yards out for a go-ahead and eventual game-winning touchdown with 6:24 remaining in the fourth quarter as Southern Arkansas came-from-behind to beat visiting Southwestern Oklahoma by a score of 28-24 on Saturday evening at Wilkins Stadium. The offensive possession prior to that game-winning toss from Renner saw the Muleriders (1-0, 1-0 GAC) go three-and-out and be forced to punt from deep within their own territory. On that ensuing punt, the Bulldogs’ (0-1, 0-1 GAC) Tanner Thompson got through the line and blocked the SAU punt attempt. Off the block, the ball would roll out of the Muleriders’ endzone for a SWOSU safety, which put the Bulldogs up 24-22. With all of the momentum seemingly with the Bulldogs at that point in the game, the Mulerider defense emotionally balanced the game out as they stood tall and forced a quick three-and-out, giving the ball back to the SAU offense. Renner and his offensive unit did not waste any time when they got the ball back as his 75-yard connection with Weisheit occurred on the first play of the drive. On the play, Weisheit ran an up and out route about 15 yards up the field and had to sky to make the reception from Renner, but once he caught it, Weisheit, thanks to a host of great blocks from his fellow wideouts, made the touchdown happen as he out-ran the SWOSU defense on his way to pay dirt. Following the touchdown, the Muleriders went for two as they hoped to stretch the lead out to six points, but a failed attempt left the score 28-24. With no room for error, the Mulerider defense rose to the occasion once more on the ensuing SWOSU possession as a combo sack by Anthony Washington and Davondrick Lison on first down plus a great pass breakup by Quan Warren on third down helped forced the Bulldogs to punt once more. Back with possession and 4:37 left in the game, the Muleriders looked to drain the clock and possibly put more points on the board, but the drive eventually stalled just over three minutes later giving the Bulldogs the ball back with a chance to drive for a go-ahead and potential game-winning score of their own. That drive for SWOSU would start at their own 20-yardline after Tanner Hudson’s 52-yard punt rolled into the endzone. Now with 1:33 remaining in the fourth quarter and SAU nursing a four-point lead, the defense would stand tall once more with Warren and Lison right in the middle of the action again. On the first down play, Warren broke up a long pass down the field that could have sparked the Bulldogs’ drive. On the very next play, however, Lison, along with fellow defensive end Kendrix McCann promptly ended the Bulldogs’ drive as the two combined for a sack-fumble which was recovered by SAU’s Phillip Gahr, effectively ending the game as the Muleriders regained possession with 1:18 left on the clock. A pair of kneel-downs by Renner would seal the deal as the Muleriders knocked off the Bulldogs 28-24. The four-point win for SAU is just another close margin of victory in the short all-time series between SAU and SWOSU as the combined margin of victory in the series is now just 20 points across five games with SAU winning four of the meetings.

Southern Arkansas University2015 MULERIDER FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Week 3 | vs. #16/17 Harding | Sept. 19 | 6 P.M.

ALVA, Okla. – The Southern Arkansas defensive unit shined brightly under the lights of the newly-christened Ranger Field in Alva, Okla. on Saturday night as SAU limited Northwest-ern Oklahoma State to just 210 yards of total offense as SAU went on to rout Northwestern by a score of 49-14. The win moves the Muleriders (2-0, 2-0 GAC) to 2-0 on the young season and marks the first time since 2012 that SAU has opened the year with consecutive wins. The strong defensive effort by the Muleriders against the Rangers (1-1, 1-1 GAC) came a week after Northwestern appeared to possess a potent offense as they totaled over 450 yards in a road win against Arkansas-Monticello. For the Muleriders on Saturday, however, their defensive prowess was perhaps seen most prominently in the running game as SAU held the Rangers to -22 net yards gained on 24 attempts. The -22 net yards allowed by the SAU defense is the lowest rushing total in a game since 2005 when SAU held East Texas Baptist University to -8 rushing yards on 30 carries. Spearheading the Muleriders’ ability to limit the run was the dominance in the trenches by their front seven. For the game, SAU would rack up 13.0 tackles for lost yardage with 5.0 of those coming as sacks. All told, 10 Mulerider defenders would register at least an assisted tackle for lost yardage with half of those player notching sacks. While the Mulerider defense certainly did its job, the SAU offense more than held their own as well against the Rangers as the Muleriders fell just five yards shy of reaching 600 total yards of offense. 331 of those yards came through the air as redshirt freshmen quarterback Barrett Renner threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns with no intercep-tions on 18-of-30 passing. It is the second-straight game in which Renner has eclipsed the 300-yard mark through the air. Renner would also add 49 yards on the ground as he helped the Muleriders total 264 yards. Nearly half of those yards were gained by senior running back Deandre Jenkins, who rushed for 108 yards and a score on 15 carries. On the receiving end of seven of Renner’s 18 completions was sophomore wideout Jonathan Weisheit as he once again went over the century-mark in receiving yards, ending the game with 163 yards. Through two games, Weisheit has 14 receptions for 299 yards and two touchdowns.
