We are not a polical organizaon, but while aending a prayer vigil last night, I realized that many of the vicms were students, and that is what we are all about. So please allow me to offer this. Among the 49 dead were students from the University of Central Florida, Florida A&M, Southern Technical College, Valencia College, East Carolina University, and one who had recently signed a leer of intent to play basketball at Mercyhurst University. The vicms were stylists and bartenders and construcon workers, and they worked at banks and labs and television staons. One was a financial aid counselor at Keiser University. And before they went on to college and careers, they were high school students. Our hearts break for their families and friends, as it does for our own SACAC members who are dealing with this tragedy on a much more personal level. FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Dear SACAC Colleagues,

For the last few days, I have been considering whether or not I, on behalf of SACAC, should make a statement regarding Sunday’s horrific shooting in Orlando. We are not a political organization, but while attending a prayer vigil last night, I realized that many of the victims were students, and that is what we are all about. So please allow me to offer this.

Among the 49 dead were students from the University of Central Florida, Florida A&M, Southern Technical College, Valencia College, East Carolina University, and one who had recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Mercyhurst University. The victims were stylists and bartenders and construction workers, and they worked at banks and labs and television stations. One was a financial aid counselor at Keiser University. And before they went on to college and careers, they were high school students.

Our hearts break for their families and friends, as it does for our own SACAC members who are dealing with this tragedy on a much more personal level. I know that we all have differ-ent beliefs and ideas about the world, but I also know SACAC to be a compassionate organi-zation. So on behalf of all of us, we offer our condolences, thoughts, and prayers.

Warm regards,

Susan McCarterPresident

DRY RUN | SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

On the Move | Member Highlights

For the second year in a row, NC State University will host Dry Run on its campus. It will be held July 24-27, 2016.

Dry Run is an annual workshop designed to provide practical experience for new admis-sion professionals who are currently employed by a college or university. The program provides training in relevant basic skills and discussion of pertinent issues and situations encountered in the admission profession. Participants will attend presentations, engage in case studies, work within small-group settings, and participate in mock-situation settings.

Participant registration is now available on the SACAC Dry Run website and the registra-tion deadline is July 1, 2016.

If you have any questions about Dry Run, contact Natalie McCook and Ronnie Chalm-ers, Dry Run Co-chairs, at [email protected].

In July 2016, Jonathan R. Ferrell will join the Pace Academy Office of College Counseling. Ferrell comes to Pace Academy from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, where he served for three years as Associate Dean of Admission and Director of Recruitment before becoming Director of Admission in 2013. Prior to his time at Millsaps, Ferrell worked for five years in multiple roles within the Centenary College of Louisiana’s Office of Admission. He received his undergraduate degree from Centenary College of Louisiana and holds an MBA from Millsaps. Ferrell is an active participant of the National Association for College Admission Counseling and a board member of the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC), where he currently chairs the annual conference attended by nearly 1,000 sec-ondary and post-secondary professionals.

SACAC MEMBERS MEET LEGISLATORS AT SECOND ANNUAL LA LEGISLATIVE DAY

In April, nineteen SACAC members in Louisiana converged on the Capitol in Baton Rouge for our second annual Legislative Day in Louisiana. The nineteen members represented nine different organizations, including public and private universities and high schools across Louisiana. The day was a tremendous success! In the morning, SACAC members were able to sit in on various House and Senate committee meetings. The highlight of the event was our afternoon panel discussion with House Education Committee member Representative Stephen Carter, Director of Public Information and Communication for the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA) Gus Wales, and the Director of Scholarship and Grant Division for LOSFA, Deborah Paul. LOSFA administers the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) state scholarship fund. Recently, TOPS has been in the news as the Louisiana state legisla-tors try to find the money to fully fund the program. Attendees greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the current status of the program and to express their concerns. Everyone left more informed and better able to counsel their students.

The SACAC Louisiana Government Relations committee plans to continue the momen-tum of this program. One goal is to develop more personal relationships with current legislators. This will allow the experience and insight of our organization to serve as a valuable resource to state legislators.
