Issue Date: Week 19 26 January 2018 Southern Book Award Congratulations to former Angmering School teacher Lisa Heathfield who achieved victory at the Southern Schools Book Award at Roedean School last Friday evening. Lisa's book 'Paper Butterflies' won most votes from teenagers across the South East of England when it was shortlisted for this year's award, which is aimed at students in Year 9 and above. Having beaten the other four shortlisted authors, Lisa explained how the book's main character, June, seemed to appear in front of her and demand that her story should be told. A story about domestic abuse, friendship and paying the penalty for our actions, the story touched the hearts of all its readers and proved to be a very popular winner. Jack Chapman 9MWO represented us at Roedean and very much enjoyed meeting all the authors aſterwards, braving the long queues to meet his favourites and have his books signed. Our next Library book club project starts this week, as we discuss the longlist of books nominated for this year's Amazing Book Awards. Further details available from Mrs Kemp at the Library desk.

Southern Book AwardCongratulations to former Angmering School teacher Lisa Heathfield who achieved victory at the Southern Schools Book Award at Roedean School last Friday evening. Lisa's book 'Paper Butterflies' won most votes from teenagers across the South East of England when it was shortlisted for this year's award, which is aimed at students in Year 9 and above.

Having beaten the other four shortlisted authors, Lisa explained how the book's main character, June, seemed

to appear in front of her and demand that her story should be told. A story about domestic abuse, friendship and paying the penalty for our actions, the story touched the hearts of all its readers and proved to be a very popular winner.Jack Chapman 9MWO represented us at Roedean and very much enjoyed

meeting all the authors afterwards, braving the long queues to meet his favourites and have his books signed. Our next Library book club project starts this week, as we discuss the longlist of books nominated for this year's Amazing Book Awards. Further details available from Mrs Kemp at the Library desk.

Show My HomeworkAngmering School has been using Show My Homework (SMHW) for two years now and we have had a lot of positive feedback on how it helps students remember what they have to do with home learning tasks. Parents and carers have also said how it helps to support their children. Recent feedback from SMHW was that we are one of the highest frequency users in the 1500 schools using it.

There is always room for improvement and SMHW recommend that all students and parents with smart phones download the app so that they can get automatic messages on deadlines. No need to turn on a computer: you will just get a pop up notification on your phone.

You can download the app from the Apple App store: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/show-my-homework/id908071717?mt=8

or Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.smhw.android&hl=en_GB

If you have forgotten your log in there is a password reset function. If you did not get around to setting up the parent/guardian account please email [email protected] and we will send out a new log in.

Thank you for your support at home to ensure this tool is used and as always support your child in completing the important learning tasks set. If you have any queries please email: [email protected]

BULLETIN

Chinese New YearThis year Chinese New Year falls on Friday 16th February so we will be celebrating with an array of Asian inspired dishes. Chinese New Year aka the Spring Festival in modern China, will introduce traditional and non traditional food and recipes to pupils. Some of which will include: an array of noodles and fragrant flavoured rice dishes, an abundance of sweet and sour flavours and other regional dishes.

Food Hero BananasNot only are bananas full of potassium and fibre but they are also delicious! We will be using them in everything from desserts, to pancakes to smoothies and even to make fresh banana bread.

Pancake DayWho doesn’t love pancake day? We certainly do! To celebrate we will have a variety of sweet and savoury toppers such as lemon and sugar, fruits, honey, cheese and tomato, creamy mushrooms and many more that pupils may not have tried before.

Loyalty CardsHot meal loyalty cards are always available so that pupils can benefit from rewards and redeem a free hot meal.

National Yorkshire Pudding DayYorkshire Puddings have been around since 1737 so we have some traditional recipes and we have put our Caterlink twist on a few out of the box recipes such as the Yorkshire Burrito! Of course we have the classic toad in the hole and roasts as well as options for vegetarians so everyone can enjoy.

Destination USAFor Destination USA we have some recipes from across the pond for pupils to try. Some of these include buffalo wings, our Mac n Cheese concept, pumpkin pie and hot dog and burger bars.

Online appointment booking is now available to Y12 and 13 parentsuntil Monday 29th January. Have you got your appointments?

Year 11 University Information Evening Tuesday 27th March 2018 6pm

As part of our programme to prepare our students for the future, we are running an information evening for parents and students who are interested in going to university. The evening will focus on general information about universities in the UK, the application process, finance and what students need to do to gain places on competitive courses.

Whilst there will be some focus on how we prepare our Sixth Form students for university, we wish to clarify that this evening is for all students regardless of their destination next year. We are planning on running this evening in the Sixth Form Common Room but have limited space so if more parents wish to come, we will move to a larger venue. Consequently, if you wish to attend, please email Sue Foster ([email protected]) to confirm.

We look forward to seeing there.A KerrisonDirector of Studies, Post-16 Education

Reminder to Safely Cross the A259Parents please encourage your children to use the Footbridge or Toucan crossing to safely cross the A259. If crossing near Sainsburys please ensure you use the crossing and do not attempt to run across the road.

How did you get on with last week’s challenge?

Filling Morecambe Bay A notice on Morecambe Promenade reads: “It would take 20 million years to fill Morecambe Bay from a bath tap.” Assuming that the flow from a bath tap is 6 litres per minute, what is the approximate capacity of Morecambe Bay, in litres?
