Dear friends and colleagues- Welcome to the first annual 2019 Southern Eye Congress! I’m very excited for the weekend ahead, which will be full of learning from some of best surgeons and innovators in the United States as well as lots of fun family time at our social events planned throughout the weekend. The previous iteration of this meeting has been ongoing for years as the “Southeast Regional Eye Meeting” or simply the “Destin Meeting”. This year we felt that a re-organization would be beneficial in order to set this meeting up for success in the future. Our regular attendees will appreciate many of these changes: We now have a beautifully updated, responsive website, thanks to our partners at Glacial Multimedia. We started the meeting later in the week so less time off from work is required. We will be finishing around lunch time each day to allow more beach, pool, and golf time with family. We have a happy hour each night, including Saturday evening’s “Southern Eye Social” sponsored by Eye South Partners...families welcome! The physician agenda has an emphasis on the everyday issues like cataract, refractive, and comprehensive anterior segment surgeons face, along with updates from our colleagues in other specialties. The technician agenda will feature relevant topics from world class surgeons, while the administrators agenda is very robust, with key opinion leaders from across the practice management and marketing space. This will be our first year to have wet labs, and we will feature some cutting edge procedures in the laser vision correction and MIGS space thanks to our partners at Zeiss and Glaukos. This will also be our first year to have resident involvement where local residents from various institutions have sent in original research abstracts for a chance to be recognized and present on the SEC stage as well as win cash prizes. Lastly, this will be our first year to present the annual SEC “Visionary Award” which will honor a surgeon who we feel is a leader that upholds all our values as a society and who has demonstrated an enormously positive impact on the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Marnix E. Heersink of Dothan, AL, has graciously accepted this honor and will deliver his keynote speech to end our symposium on Sunday. So, thank you all for choosing to spend your weekend with us on the beautiful emerald coast of Florida. A very special thanks to our ophthalmic industry professionals who have contributed more sponsorship to this year’s symposium than any previous year...we appreciate your partnership and couldn’t do it without you! See y’all at the beach,

Blake Williamson, MD, MPH, MSProgram Chairman

I’d like to thank the Program Committee for its hard work in putting together another outstanding agenda and for the sponsors that generously support our meeting. Again, thank you for making the 2019 Southern Eye Congress a continual success.
