NWe recently travelled to the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia to taste their

Shiraz wines. It is important to note this region is not well known for Shiraz as their red wine specialty, due to their cooler climate, is largely Pinot Noir . That said, they do

compete in the Shiraz market so we took the time to taste their wares!

We conducted the tastings in March of 2014 with publication one month after of the ratings.

We wanted to show off the wine as well as the beautiful landscape and food so you get a real feel of the area. Our ratings are conducted using both a quantitative and qualitative

system to create a greater mean dispersion among wines rated .

Each wine is rated out of 100 and are classified as follows;

100-95 [Classic], 95-90 [Outstanding], 90-85 [Excellent], 85-75 [Very Good], 75-60 [Good], 60-50 [Acceptable] and <50 [Unacceptable]

Enjoy the read!

Rating Outperformance

Two wines out performed the median wine rating for shiraz in the region with one particular wine delivering the best value of quality for price (out performance) than any of its measured peers. Three wines performed below the benchmark thus potentially delivering less estimated quality for value.

Artemis Grand Heritage Shiraz 2009 Southern Highlands NSW, Australia

Out of the Southern Highlands this is your pick today, however move fast because there is only a couple of dozen even left for sale!

It is an ample bodied wine with a dark bright crimson colour. Fruits and spices on the nose with flavours of red currants, cherries, mulberries, aniseed and chocolate. The fruits are ripe with a medium lingering finish. An elegant, balanced and developing wine. A bit expensive for value. Best drinking to 2025.

Value: $65

Rating: 85.31/100 [Excellent]

Centennial Shiraz 2012 Southern Highlands NSW, Australia

This is a good medium bodied wine with spicy black peppers aromas. Strong cedar flavours with cherries and plums and a nice soft finish. It is a young wine with a good 5 years left in it if you want to get the most out of these flavours.

We drank this wine with lamb and it enhanced the spicy aromas.

Value: $25

This was our highest rated shiraz in the region.

Rating: 75.87/100 [Very Good]

McVitty Grove Shiraz 2007 Southern Highlands NSW, Australia

This is a medium bodied wine with a dark plum appearance. Blackberry, aniseed and earthy oaky flavours make it a balanced wine with a smooth finish. We did not taste this wine in its prime which is a shame, however the wine is still available at the cellar door so worth drinking and rating.

Value: $28

Rating: 70.10/100 [Good]

Tertini Hilltops Shiraz 2013 Southern Highlands NSW, Australia

__________________________________________________

This is a light bodied wine that is very young, in fact only 2 months old, so we have calculated that into the rating. Aromas however are also light but you can get subtle spices in the nose. The flavours are red and black fruits with pepper and eucalyptus. This finish is medium and lingering.

Best drinking to 2020 but I would leave it for 6 months before drinking again to give it a little more time.

Value: $28

Rating: 68.75/100 [Good]
