THE biggest musical extravaganza inSouthern NSW, Southern Stars, is backthis year with the theme of#webelieve2014.

The show brings together about 2800students from 92 schools and includes aninspiring and energetic mix of outstandingdancers, vocalists, musicians, actors andacrobats.

Most of all, the show highlights theunlimited talents and excellence inperformance and creativity beingnurtured in our public schools.

Just as academically gifted studentsand students with sporting talents aregiven ample opportunities to compete andexcel, Southern Stars gives those with aleaning towards the creative arts thechance to shine.

Together this year, these students willcreate two hours of musical nirvana – akaleidoscope of colour, sound andmovement with mass dance numbers andintimate solos, taking patrons on a movingand joyful ride.

#webelieve2014 is about a child’s

journey through to adulthood, believing inmagic and fantasy in the early years,believing in themselves, and througheducation believing in a better world.

#webelieve2014 is an exploration of thedevelopment of our belief systemsthroughout life, the things we care about,and value as individuals, as a community,a global society and as humanity.

The show is divided into three segmentsand each investigates a different aspect ofbelieving, starting with childhood thenworking through the turbulent teenageyears through to adulthood. The segmenton childhood is a beautiful and colourfulexploration of themes such as magic, fairytales, fantasy, Christmas, heroes andgrowing up. A highlight is a number fromthe musical Matilda entitled When I GrowUp, which is a delightful and joyful accountof growing up as told through the eyes ofyoung children.

The show then moves through theteenage years and takes a slightly darkerturn as it explores themes such asrebellion, doubt and uncertainty.

#webelieve2014 concludes with abroader examination of the things we aspeople believe in including themes such associal justice, standing together and ofcourse, love.

The end result is four outstandingperformances, not to mention the skillsgained, friendships made, and dreamscreated by students involved in the show.

Performances of Southern Stars#webelieve2014 will be held today at 10am(school’s performance) and 7.30pm andtwo performances tomorrow at 2pm and7.30pm.

Tickets are available for Friday night,Saturday matinee and Saturday nightthrough Ticketmaster(www.ticketmaster.com) and are priced at$48 (adult), $38 (pensioner and studentover 12), $27 (student/child under 12) and$140 (family pass).

Southern Stars’ #webelieve2014 explores all that webelieve in – the things we cherish, defend and hold dearwithin our hearts.

#webelieve2014 is a two-hour musical and theatricalexploration of our belief systems, the things we careabout and value as individuals, as a community, a globalsociety, and as humanity.

To bring you the show this year, many people had tobelieve. Really believe.

Despite challenging economic times, themanagement committee at Southern Stars believedthat we could put on a show in 2014.

We believe that our public school children deserve toparticipate in the Southern Stars experience.

We believe the performing arts are as important asparticipating in sports, or attaining top academicachievement.

We believe our students have a right to experiencethe camaraderie, the development of new skills, and thesheer exhilaration of participating in a Southern Starsshow.

We believe in our schools who support SouthernStars students by fundraising for costumes, supplyingrelief staff at no cost, and selling tickets for our Fridaymatinee show.

Most importantly we believe in our teachers whorecognise that education is more than what happens inthe classroom and as a result give so freely of their owntime so their students can learn about teamwork,commitment and excellence through Southern Stars.

We believe in our volunteers who give hours, daysand weeks of their precious time so that the show goeson.

Alumni return favour

Matt Geronimi

MANY of the choreographersworking on Southern Stars#webelieve2014 are alumni of theshow and are determined to passon the same great opportunitiesas they received when they werein the show.

Matt Geronimi, best known forhis stint as a dancer on So YouThink You Can Dance seasonthree, is no exception when itcomes to his involvement with theshow, which stemmed from hisexperiences of performing inSchools Spectacular in his highschool years.

“It’s important to give back

when you can,” Matt said.“My experiences in performing

in School Spec was my first realtaste of performing on such alarge scale and I wanted to givekids coming through today thesame opportunities.”

It is the second time Matt hasbeen asked to choreograph aroutine for Southern Stars,working with the Southern StarsPerforming Company high schooldancers. With a strong backgroundin ballroom dancing, two years agohe wowed with an intense Tangoroutine for the featured dancers.

This year Matt has

choreographed a routine to thesong Oh So Quiet (Bjork), sung byrising musical star Siena Elchaar,and is in the segment which dealswith teenagers and what theybelieve in.

“I really wanted to pay homageto the original film clip for thesong,” Matt said.

“This piece is about teenagersand their mood swings – being upand then the next moment beingdown and the next up again!

“There is a fury of motion attimes and then some almost slowmotion sequences and a lot oflight and shade.

“We are working around andwith a vocalist in this routine, andthat adds extra elements whendeveloping choreography.”

Matt said he was lucky to begiven such a great group ofstudents to work with for the item.

“They are such a select group ofdancers,” he said.

“I’m spoiled for choice becauseall of them are so good. They cannot only dance they can flip, doaerials, anything I ask of them.

“It’s really a pleasure to see howthey have developed since twoyears ago when I worked withthem. They are amazing kids.”

NSW education regions changed last year andas a result, for the first time in Southern Star’s14-year history, schools from throughout thestate were invited to participate.

When the applications started rolling in therewas great interest from schools in theSouthern and South Western Sydney areas, asthe management committee had expected.

What wasn’t expected was the applicationfrom a little school in the Far Far West.

Bourke Public School’s creative and practicalarts coordinator and teacher Bree Mowbraysaid she saw an opportunity for her studentsand grabbed it with both hands.

“I was so excited when I saw the expressionof interest put out by the Southern Starsteam,” Ms Mowbray said.

“Because we are so isolated, we don’t reallyget a whole lot of opportunities for ourstudents.

‘‘I saw this and though we’d give it a shot.’’Twenty students from years 3 to 6 made the

12-hour bus journey to Wollongong with MsMowbray, their principal and teacher’s aide.

“The distance isn’t as daunting as you thinkfor us,” Ms Mowbray said.

“It’s not a big deal for us to travel four hourseach way to play school sport against anotherschool, so 12 hours, while being a long wayaway, is worth it for us to give our students thisone of a kind opportunity.

“They are a lovely group of students – veryhappy-go-lucky and very easy-going, so we arehaving a lot of fun.

‘‘Some of the girls have never seen thebeach before, so that has been really excitingtoo.

“Our whole school and community has been

so supportive and helped us to fundraise sothat we could get here. I think they are asexcited for us as we are to be here.”

Ms Mowbray said it was quite an experiencefor the students, considering there are morestudents in the show than people living inBourke itself.

“There are about 2000 people in the wholetown, so performing with 2800 other studentsis quite overwhelming for the girls, but they aretaking it in their stride,” she said.

The Bourke students will be involved in allthe mass dance numbers as well as Spice UpYour Life and Absolutely Everybody.

Other first-time schools to join the SouthernStars family include Campbelltown PerformingArts High, Caringbah High School, ConnellsPoint Public School, Hammondville PublicSchool, Liverpool Girls High School, MawarraPublic School, Strathfield High School, SylvaniaHigh School, and Young High School.
