By volume and authority, the North dominates global knowledge production. Southern Theory suggests, however, that knowledge can be and is produced in the Global South in ways that do not simply reproduce but actually challenge and reshape global knowledge-making practices. In this presentation I draw on interviews with South African scholars whose research was shaped by their relationship to activism and their engagement with marginality stemming from histories of colonialism and imperialism. I pay particular attention to how their own youth experiences of schooling and their professional work as lecturers influenced their collective approach to knowledge-production and thereby, to Southern theory. Robert Morell, University of Cape Town, is an internationally renowned scholar writing extensively on gender, parenthood, violence and schooling. He has published numerous of books, including From Boys to Gentlemen (2001), African Masculinities (2005, ed. w. Ouzgane), Towards Gender Equality? South African Schools During the HIV/AIDS Epidemic (2009, w. Epstein et al), and most recently Books and Babies: Pregnancy and Young Parents in Schools (2012, ed. w. Bana & Shefer). He is currently working with Raewyn Connell, Fran Collyer and Joai Maia on a Southern Theory project, Global Arenas of Knowledge.
