A transitional art project will trans-form the Woolston Community Li-brary site – and the community will decide what it is.

The library was badly damaged in the earthquakes and demolished shortly after the February 2011 earthquake.

A community workshop will be held on February 19 at the site where

members of the community can come up with a plan for the space.

Milenko Matanovic, an expert in transitional art projects, will be at the workshop to help guide the commu-nity on what could work in the space.

Mr Matanovic has worked with hundreds of communities interna-tionally to build more than 50 com-munity spaces.

Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton

said plans for the site were first dis-cussed at a board meeting last year.

She said the site had become un-loved and overgrown and it was ex-citing to see some action.

A plan and process for transform-ing it would be worked through on the day, she said.

“There is funding set aside to make it happen.”

The project will be similar to oth-ers that have happened in other areas

of Christchurch like the Sydenham Pod Park and the mosaic seat and ‘Fifth Ship’ in Lyttelton.

“It is really exciting for the area to have a real transitional project.”

The best part about it was that it would be entirely up to the community as to what is put there, she said.

“It will be really interesting to see what the community will come up with.”

Commuters in the Southern View area will face some delays this month as key repair projects continue.

• Barrington St, SomerfieldDue to finish on March 6Work to repair damaged wastewater pipes

on Barrington St continues this month. Drivers should be ready for detours heading south towards Cashmere Rd. The journey down Barrington St from the shopping cen-tre is being detoured along Frankleigh and Milton Sts until early March while the pipes are repaired.

Barrington St, between Somerfield and Moana Sts, will be closed to southbound traffic, with a detour via Tainui and Darley Sts in place until February 16.

Barrington St, between Milton and Deloraine Sts, will be closed to southbound traffic with detours in place via Milton St, Strickland St, Colombo St and Centaurus Rd or Frankleigh St, Sparks Rd, Hoon Hay Rd and Cashmere Rd until March 6.

• Spreydon, Somerfield, Sydenham, Waltham, Opawa

Due to finish on August 22Downer is repairing the PS20 wastewater

system which stretches from Barrington St to Ensors Rd in Linwood. Workers will be repairing both the wastewater main in the street and the publicly owned section of lat-eral pipes. The work started last month and will take about seven months to complete.

• Moorhouse Ave/ Lancaster St, Phillipstown intersection

Due to finish on February 28Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure

Rebuild Team’s City Care team is repairing

a manhole in the middle of this intersection one block east of Fitzgerald Ave. Two-way traffic is being maintained but there is no parking and limited turning options off and onto Lancaster St. Access to businesses will be maintained.

• Opawa Rd one-wayThere is currently a one-way system,

south-east bound only, on Opawa Rd from Brougham St heading towards Ensors Rd roundabout. This is expected to be in place until May. SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team is repairing the gravity wastewater main and needs to dig a trench along one side of the road, taking up a traffic lane. Lateral pipes will also be repaired up to property bound-aries. Any connecting holes needed on pri-vate property will be tidied up afterwards.

• Moorhouse Ave overbridgeSCIRT’s Downer team will be starting

work on the overbridge this week which is expected to last for 20 months. The slip lanes either side of the bridge to Colombo St will be reduced to one lane, however, traffic lanes will be largely unaffected on the overbridge itself. More details are yet to come.

A FAREWELL TO OUR “AMOS”

&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice

Just prior to Christmas, we tragically lost our beautiful 11 year old Abbysinnian cat Amos. We arrived home from an awesome evening out with our staff to find him dead on our driveway. We suspected he had collided with a car, although he never leaves our section, except to keep an eye on our 12 month old cat Spartacus, who is a frequent visitor to the Canterbury University pigeon enclosure. Amos would sit at our letterbox and wait for Spartacus to cross the road safely, then Amos would chase him up our drive, basically telling him off.

On arriving home we found Spartacus stuck up our neighbours cabbage tree and Lola hiding in her kennel. They were both freaked out and very upset.

Nothing can prepare you for the sorrow and grief you feel on the loss of a treasured, valued, loved member of your family. It has been 12 years since I lost my faithful, awesome dog Tobias and 2 years since Eli our cat was put to sleep. Spartacus spent days calling and looking for Amos, lying on everything that had Amos’s smell on it. Our two teenage sons still cant talk about Amos and Isaac our 10 year old spent a lot of time very upset questioning why!

Amos was a battler. He successfully kept every cat off our section, despite his disability in having an entire hind paw amputated. We suspected as a tiny kitten he contracted Toxoplasmosis which caused hindleg paralysis, forcing me to amputate his left hind paw. This never slowed him up. Other various injuries included a severely fractured pelvis causing osteoarthritis, numerous cat fight wounds from protecting Spartacus and his territory and a near drowning.

He absolutely loved our family. He followed Steve around everywhere watching him mow lawns, hit balls on the court with the kids, cook in the kitchen and lie on Steve at night getting hours of chin scratches. He would hop onto a chariot designed for him especially and the boys would carry him into their rooms. Isaac spent hours in his basket reading or chatting to him. At night Spartacus and Amos would curl up together, after fastidiously grooming each other. Even Lola would try to get in on the fun. It would be fair to say he slept a

lot….he followed the sun around each room and the only thing that got him running was food!! Amos had a ravenous appetite, never turned food down and every food was his favourite. We loved him for that.

Where ever he is I know he’s looking after us all. A month on, it still hurts to talk about him. We look at heaps of photos and pour heaps of love into Spartacus, who even though we know he loves us, he really needs a feline companion around. Another cat to keep him in line, guard the section (as Spartacus isn’t that brave) and a play mate. Through a stroke of luck we may end up getting a relative of Amos’s, Piper. Piper is Amos’s ¾ brother and miraculously looks identical to our boy. We are excited to meet Piper and hopefully it will all work out. Will keep you posted.

Suspicious fireAddington firefighters were called to a suspicious car fire on the corner of Huxley and Croydon Sts in Syden-ham on Monday. Firefighters ar-rived at the scene at about 10.50pm and extinguished the fire shortly after. Southern Fire Communica-tions shift manager Daryl Ball said the fire had been referred to police.

Wastewater repairsMuirson Ave will be closed be-tween McBeath St and Hoon Hay Rd until the end of February due to wastewater repairs. City Care, as part of SCIRT, replaced the waste-water main in Muirson Ave in late 2012. Inspection work has shown that further work is required.

Conference for memberThe Spreydon-Heathcote Com-munity Board will send its deputy chairwoman, Karolin Potter to the New Zealand Community Boards Conference held in the Bay of Islands in May. The board could only afford to send one member and agreed Ms Potter would be a good candidate and the conference would be beneficial.

Basketball grantSomerfield School student Me-gan Ellis was granted $350 from the Spreydon-Heathcote Youth Achievement and Development Scheme fund for her basketball. The 14-year-old was selected in the New Zealand under-16 development tour that competed at the Australia Country Junior Basketball Cup in Australia last month. Her team met one week before the tournament and reached the quarter finals.

▌▌ IN BRIEF

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

A project aimed at supporting vulnerable women and children will receive $3000 to help cover its rent costs.

Project Esther originally ap-plied to receive $9000 out of the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board’s discretionary response fund, but the amount was amended.

The charity’s former premises, owned by South West Baptist Church, was burnt down in an arson attack in 2012 and it moved into new premises.

Project Esther is a community

ministry of the church and the new premises are also owned by it.

With the move, the rent jumped from $30 a week to $300 which now includes general maintenance, gardening, transferring of phone calls and computer assistance.

The funds received will go to-wards rent payments for the com-ing year which would help hold it over until the next round of larger funds such as the strengthening communities fund could be given.

Community board chairman Paul McMahon said it was an ex-tremely difficult decision to make.

“It’s something the board needs to weigh up carefully.”

He said it was a significant amount of money and the fund had to last until June.

“That fund has diminished over the last year.”

It had just over $50,000 left before granting funds to other applicants on Tuesday.

“They are a great organisation that is really transparent.”

Project Esther works with single mothers, inmates in Christchurch Women’s Prison and provides temporary emergency support accommodation.

Board deputy chairwoman Karolin Potter moved a motion to reduce the amount to $3000 and

it was seconded by city councillor Tim Scandrett.

Ms Potter said the board had been very generous to the char-ity in the past and there was no greater cause than supporting vulnerable women and children.

But the arson was two years ago and the new amount was propor-tionate, she said.

Project Esther manager Daphne Marsden said the project was for-tunate that it was allocated $3000.

“We’re very grateful, it all helps.”She said the church let the char-

ity stay in the house for less than market price and it was a great landlord.

$3000 funding for charity

BIG DAY: Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton speaks at the Scarborough Paddling Pool’s official opening ceremony and pool party on Wednesday. The paddling pool was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and had been closed to the public ever since. It was blessed and re-opened on December 20 but a few finishing touches had to be completed before the official opening last week. Permanent fencing and landscaping have since been completed and timber shade pavilions have been installed. The city council repaired the pool at a cost of $780,000 which now includes a splash pad, seating and water toys.

So Brenda, tell me a bit about yourself.

Well, I’m 46 and I have a whanau. My husband and I have been together for 22 years, and married for 15. We have eight children. Not all of them are ours – we have a bit of a blended whanau. My husband, Wairangi, works here at He Waka Tapu with me. He’s an alcohol and drug assessor and I am a whanau intervention assessor.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in Timaru. We’ve only sort of come up here to Christchurch in the last five years. My husband wanted to complete his degree in alcohol and drug studies up here. He has finished it now and we live in Papanui.

You have more than 4500 supporters on your Ka Pai Me Facebook page. How did that start?

Well, I’ve always had a weight problem from the get-go, from when I was very young. The Facebook page happened in August last year. Things were

pretty tough for me and I was really wanting to make a change and didn’t know how. My work colleagues and I were trying to nut out something I could do. I was a bit resistant at first thinking about how it would go and how I would feel, blah de blah, but the page was set up and away I went. I post on it every day of how I’m going.

How did you feel about the support you received on the page?

In the beginning there were about five or 600 following and I was like ‘mean’. Then it started growing and growing and it got steady support building. From the time that I’ve had the page, I’ve had no negative comments.

Have you heard of other people following in your footsteps?

There are lots of people going on their own journeys. A lot of them private messaged me in the background because they didn’t want friends or whanau to know. There were maybe about 50 who have started their own journey. We all motivate each other and that sort of thing keeps me going and it’s that accountability. I really enjoy it and it’s quite therapeutic.

Can you tell me a bit about your 700-day health and fitness plan?

A 700-day journey of hardIn August, Brenda Warren was 199kg. She has a goal to lose 100kg during a 700-day health and fitness plan, and will take part in The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate event next month. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to her about the journey, her training and the biggest challenges she has faced.

GETTING FIT: Brenda Warren performs at the kapa haka regionals in April last year before she began her health and fitness plan.

I am on day 165, it’s going really well. I see Daniel, the nutrition-ist here at He Waka Tapu, once a week and we look at food menus and exercise programmes and set goals. Then on Fridays we have the weigh-in. I do the exercise on my own.

Was it difficult to get motivated?

In the beginning I was ready. I did a 10-day count down before I started and that helped. I got to say goodbye to some of the foods that I love like Chinese, KFC, chocolate, fizzy and chocolate eclairs. Having that last pig-out and saying that’s it, no more helped me prepare myself for what I was going to do.

Had you tried anything like this before?

I’m a queen of lots of things. I’ve tried every single diet, pills and potions. I’ve tried Atkins, Sure Slim. They all work, but if you don’t have the head stuff straight it is hard. I did lose 50kg about three or four years ago but my head space was not in it. This time I’ve been able to put it out there. I was a bit shy but now I don’t care. There will be a lot of people feel-ing the same.

What prompted you to do it?My husband and I were talking

about how I had never tried hyp-nosis and it planted the seed again. There was a combination of things and I was ready to do it. I went to social media and I haven’t looked back really.

How is it going? I hear you have made some great progress.

Progress is going really well, you have some good weeks and some not so good weeks and it’s just working through them and I get to verbalise them as well. There was one week that I had 4kg put on and I was like ‘how did that happen’ but we worked through it and that’s what I do every week. It’s also learning about your body really. I’m 46-years-old and I’m still learning.

So do you have a target weight?I would love to get under 100kg.

I haven’t been that since I was in high school. I’m determined, no more, I’m not going to go back again, it’s too hard to start again

and I’ve done it countless times. If you don’t mind me asking,

what was your starting weight and where are you sitting now?

I started out at 199.5kg and I’m down to 172.1kg. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m getting there. I’m getting close to losing 30kg, I’m at 27.4kg now.

And I hear you are in training for the City2Surf next month, how is that going?

I am trying to do something every day, an 8.2km walk has been the biggest so far. We did a walk recently with about 35 friends, whanau and supporters from the page. Some went for a 3.2km walk and some others went for a 5km. We’re trying to do it every week before the City2Surf to prepare. I’m doing some swimming and

aqua zumba in the mornings so I’m up at 5.30am. I did the 6km last year when I was on a semi-diet but I struggled. But this year I am way fitter than what I was and will try the 14km.

What was the focus for you when you started the plan?

The focus for me was getting the kai right. We work on the food first, the exercise will come once you get in the buzz. I just started aqua-jogging three days a week. I’m a bit of an addict now, we just shake our booties and shake our wobbly bits and no-one cares.

Do you have goals or rewards along the way?

Every 10kg I lose, I give myself a reward. The first 20kg I lost I got my eyelashes done. When I get to 30kg I’m going to get my hair done. Usually my husband does it, he’s not the best hairdresser but I love him.

What advice would you give others who are wanting to do the same as you?

I think what they need to do is sit down and think about what they really want to do. If you don’t have that head space right you’re setting yourself up to fail. It’s baby steps and the 10-day count down is a good idea because they will truly understand what they are going to endeavour. The secret is having great support, even at work here we’re quite fit and healthy conscious. We feed off each other and they are amazing. I’m very blessed.

The Quarryman’s Trail will be among the first of a new cycle network in Christchurch.

The trail will link Halswell, Hoon Hay and Somerfield to the South-ern Lights route which connects the southern suburbs to the central city.

Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee chair-man Phil Clearwater said the city council recently agreed on the first

four routes to be built. The other priority cycleways

include the Uni-Cycle which links Canterbury University to the cen-tral city through Hagley Park.

Papanui Parallel which connects Northlands and the Northern Rail Route to the central city, and the Rapanui-Shag Rock Cycleway from the Coastal Pathway at Fer-rymead to the central city.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Simon Bridges announced the first round of funding from the Government’s Urban Cycleways Fund, including an allocation for sections of two major cycle routes to be built this year.

Cr Clearwater said the city council also looked at adopting a detailed design guide to show how the 13 routes will be built to provide a facility that will lead to

more people cycling by providing a much improved level of safety.

“As we heard yesterday, we have learned a lot about the type of fa-cility needed to meet the standard to achieve our goal and this will have an impact on the cost.

“We are trying to balance the need to push on and build these much-needed facilities as well as manage our financial situation.”

Akaroa will host a number of events to celebrate Seaweek.

The week will run from Feb-ruary 28 and marine expert Pro-fessor Chris Battershill will visit and speak as part of the celebra-tions.

The coast has been a great de-terminer of Akaroa’s economy, heritage and culture and in June the Akaroa marine reserve was opened.

Akaroa District promotions executive officer Hollie Hol-lander said it was great to attract such a high calibre speaker.

“In June 2014 the new ma-rine reserve was gazetted, so it’s timely for us to celebrate Sea-week and acknowledge the sig-nificance of our coast.”

Professor Battershill’s presen-tation on March 2 is titled ‘Ma-rine Reserve biodiversity - more than you bargain for: Baselines, Resilience and the Blue Econo-my’.

He will focus on Akaroa Har-bour and the establishment of marine reserves in general.

On March 4 Akaroa Area School and Ao Tawhiti Unlim-ited School in Christchurch will battle it out on the debating floor.

The topic is ‘The Land is More Important than the Sea’ and Ao Tawhiti Unlimited will argue for the negative side and Akaroa Area School for the positive side.

NEW BEGINNINGS: Balloons are released as part of the official opening ceremony at Te Waka Unua School.

Pupils, parents and staff came together to start a new chapter at Te Waka Unua School last week.

The school is the result of the controversial merger between Woolston and Phillipstown schools and the name represents a double hulled waka symbolising the merger of the two schools.

The opening ceremony ended with pupils releasing more than 400 balloons to mark the begin-ning of their new journey.

The new school is located at the former Woolston School site and five new classrooms were built last year.

The assembly hall was also con-verted into learning spaces.

By Bridget RutherfordRapaki Rd will have further no- stopping restrictions installed after residents raised concerns about the width of the road.

The Spreydon-Heathcote Com-munity Board approved the restric-tions, which will run from Erewhon Tce for 64m on the eastern side of the road.

The restrictions will make room for vehicles trying to turn around and improve the sight distance.

At the meeting last week, resident Mike Smith told the board he had lived on Rapaki Rd for 16 years and had seen it become busier over the past few years. He said the proposal was a positive step and the no-stop-ping on the eastern side of the road was logical but would like to see it extended further.

He said the road from number 10-16 was also very narrow and wondered if no-stopping restric-tions could be placed there.

“We’re concerned with what we see on a day-to-day basis.”

Traffic engineer Chang Xi said it was a difficult situation.

“Safety and parking have to com-promise, we can’t satisfy everyone.”

Board members worried that if the proposal was amended for re-strictions to extend further, it would need to go back for public consul-tation which would take time and money.

The board voted unanimously in favour of implementing the no-stopping restrictions as they were, and would monitor its progress.

Parking restrictions on Rapaki Rd

By Bridget RutherfordRestricted parking signs have gone up in a Sydenham street before the local community board approved them.

The Spreydon-Heathcote Com-munity Board is angry restricted parking signs were put up on Or-bell St.

The restrictions for a section of the street were to be discussed at the board meeting on Tuesday, but P30 signs were already in place be-fore it gave approval.

Trents Wholesale proposed the

restrictions be installed because it was in the process of putting a cafe on the premises.

Board chairman Paul McMahon said there was confusion as to why they were already in place.

“There needs to be a box that says ‘community board has ap-proved’, otherwise it’s unlawful.”

Traffic engineer Chang Xi said once a proposal had been approved it could take a contractor about two months to install the signs.Legally the restrictions would be there with no signs to enforce it, he

said. In this case, the contractors were too efficient and must have misunderstood, he said.

Mr McMahon said if people had been ticketed for parking there be-fore the approval, they should get their money back because it was not a legal restriction.

Cr Tim Scandrett agreed the process was not followed, but did not have a problem with the re-strictions.

“In this instance it was an hon-est mistake, but a proper process should be followed.”

The board discussed the issue and unanimously approved the parking restrictions, but made a note that in future, recommenda-tions should not be implemented until board approval had been given.

Neighbouring business JLE Electrical would also be affected by the restrictions.

Lower South Island manager Alistair Kelso said the parking re-strictions would mean their cus-tomers, clients and reps would have the opportunity to park there too.

Medals aplenty for schoolsBY KYLE KNOWLES

Christchurch schools had a spectacular medal haul at the South Island Rowing Champi-onships last week.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, St Margaret’s College, Christ-church Girls’ High School and St Andrew’s College had the largest medal tallies, winning 30 between them.

Rangi Ruru and St Andrew’s each came home from Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel with eight crews winning medals.

St Andrew’s could only man-age one gold medal in their haul which went to the novice coxed eight. They picked up three more silver medals and four bronze.

The Rangi Ruru team won only the one gold too but could have easily had many more, fin-ishing runner-up in seven other races. The gold medal boat was the under-15 coxed eight.

Rangi’s big boats were the shining stars for the school with seven of the eight medals com-ing from crews of four or eight.

The one smaller boat was the under-19 coxless pair of Libby Hazlett and Libby Vincent who missed out on gold by six seconds to the Girls’ High crew of Grace Shaw and Sophie Jackson.

Five St Margaret’s crews won gold. They were the under-19, under-16 and under-15 coxed four and the under-17 and 19 coxed eights.

Girls’ High scored seven medals, including four golds.

Under-19 pair Grace Shaw and Sophie Jackson won their event while three of the school’s novice crews won their catego-ries. They were the coxed eight, coxed four and double scullers

Arlia Schurr and Laura Pinnell.Other Christchurch schools

had successful regattas as well.Christs’ College and Christ-

church Boys High School each won six medals with half of them being golds.

St Thomas of Canterbury College had the one gold medal crew in the form of under-17 boys double scullers Alex Coulthard and Jakob Mangels. The school won a silver and a

bronze also.Villa Maria College and St

Bede’s College both won four medals while Burnside High School and Avonside Girls’ High School picked up one each.

For all of the schools, this regatta was good preparation for the South Island Secondary School Championships in early March and the Maadi Cup at the end of March to be held at Lake Karapiro near Cambridge.

Established in 2009, the Ferry Antique Centre is a cooperative run by eight registered dealers, each specialising in a different

area of the antique trade. Between them, they offer an eclectic and extensive collection of antiques and collectables including china, crystal, cutlery, bottles, old tools, militaria, jewellery, linen,

books, kitchenalia, kiwiana, and men’s and women’s vintage clothing and evening wear and accessories.

Appropriately housed in a historic wooden lodge dating back to the 1880s, and one of only a few of its kind left in Christchurch, the Ferry Antique Centre is surprisingly large with a seemingly endless array of fascinating items on display.

In fact, stepping inside has been described by some customers as like “walking into the Tardis”.

For others, it is a “nostalgic trip down memory lane”, seeing items they remember from their childhood.

A true emporium, the centre attracts people of all ages, and offers something for everyone. The dealers also provide valuations and can source specific items for customers.

Looking for a special piece of china, a quirky item for a gift, or old books to add to your collection? Or just want to enjoy browsing to see what you can discover?

The Ferry Antique Centre is located at 598 Ferry Road, Woolston Village, opposite the Woolston branch of the ANZ bank. Phone 376 4016. It is open everyday, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday 11am to 4pm.

Owner Karen Sheridan’s fashion industry background has given her an eye for colour and taste for adventurous and interesting

designs, and her international contacts enable her to source items from around the world. Karen chooses pieces that are unique and colourful but are well crafted and for her, design comes first. Reproduction Eames chairs are classics that have stood the test of time, yet thanks to Karen’s ability to mix and match eras, colours and styles, they are

combined brilliantly with ultra modern, funky pieces.

Out of the Box is an earthquake success story. Having begun in a double shipping container in Sumner, the store is now located in The Tannery and showcases many of the eye-popping items that Karen has found. Her stylish light range includes NUD lights from Sweden with their vibrant, looping cords and the spherical outdoor LED pool light takes exterior mood lighting to a new level. Her homewares include candles, ceramics,

cushions and more that mean her loyal clients can add some zing to their interior design without breaking the bank balance. The eclectic selection of furniture ranges from an amazingly comfortable sofa (on show in emerald green but available in a host of jewel colours) to side tables with clean, straight lines.

Karen caters for all ages, and kids are not forgotten. Her merfins, designed in Australia, were the hot Christmas ‘must have’ for Christchurch’s budding mermaids, alongside adorable animal cushions by Areaware and portable Bluetooth speakers in hot, summer colours.

It’s not surprising then, that Karen has a dedicated following of clients who turn to her for advice on how best to express their individuality in their homes. Karen is happy to source items just for you, and will even visit your home or workplace to make suggestions about just what will work best.

For unique, edgy, contemporary homewares and furniture, Out of the Box at The Tannery is filled with the types of individual pieces that will add

vitality and flair to any room.

Many of us live with symptoms such as fatigue, cold hands and feet, and feeling the cold more than others, sleeping for hours

but still feeling tired, dry, coarse skin and even depression, without realising what the cause could be. The thyroid gland controls our metabolism and can be affected by a range of factors including the continual stress that post-earthquake Cantabrians live with.

Simone Reddington and her team of

qualified herbalists and nutritionists at The Apothecary at the Tannery are here to help. They will be running thyroid clinics to check people’s thyroids, and either rule it out as a concern or they will advise on natural ways to treat the issue.

These highly qualified and experienced professionals are available to recommend products, give lifestyle suggestions and treat people, as well as use a variety of proven and effective techniques to help their patients

regain optimal health. They will work with you if you are already taking medication for a thyroid problem to make you feel even better.

Operating under the NZ Association of

Do you have a thyroid problem?Summer’s a great time to be active, but if you find you don’t have the energy to join in the fun with the rest of the family, it could be that you are suffering from a mildly underactive thyroid.

Medical Herbalists, they ensure that all the products they stock and prescribe meet their own stringent quality approval, and work closely with the client to match the right remedy, or range of remedies, to that individual. Walking into their store and clinic feels like stepping into a traditional apothecary with its wooden shelving filled with herbs, their own range of tinctures, nutritional supplements and a selection of medicinal foods, all natural and not tested on animals. These are traditional remedies designed to optimise health in a modern world.

If would like to find out more about The Apothecary’s thyroid clinics and what support they can give to you, call them on 03 389 0857, visit www.the-apothecary.co.nz or call in to see them at Unit 19, The Tannery, 3 Garlands Road and begin your journey to feeling well.

FOOD

Jam packed

A little lime zest added to strawberry jam gives it a subtle and fresh flavour. It’s a favourite on freshly baked scones. Or spoon it over thin crepes with a little creme fraiche, and it’s just as delicious on toast and bagels. Or what about a Swiss roll?

Ingredients1½ kgs nectarines, ripe 1 cup water 1 vanilla pod 2 tbsp fresh lime juice, or use lemon juice 1½ kgs raw sugar

Directions

Using the point of a sharp paring knife, score each nectarine. Place the fruit in a bowl then cover with boiling water and leave for 15 minutes.

Peel the fruit, discard the skin and stones then roughly chop the flesh.

Put the fruit in a heavy-based

saucepan or preserving pan. Add the water. Slit the vanilla pod and scrape the seeds into the pan. Add the pod along with the lime or lemon juice and the sugar.

Stir to combine then bring to a boil and stir while cooking, for 45 minutes. Ladle into hot, sterilised jars.

Homemade jam makes a lovely gift. If you can’t find jam-setting sugar, normal sugar is fine – your jam will just need to cook a little longer. Always test a little on a saucer to ensure you get that perfect consistency.

Strawberry and lime jam Makes 3 cups

Nectarine and vanilla jam Makes 4 x 250ml

Ingredients500 g strawberries, hulled and cut in half 500 g jam-setting sugar ½ lime, zested 1 tbsp butter

DirectionsPlace the strawberries, sugar and

lime zest in a heavy saucepan. Slowly bring to a simmer, stirring continuously over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.

Then bring it to a boil. Contin-ue to boil for 8-10 minutes.

Place a little on a saucer and if it is sticky and starting to set, remove it from the heat. If not, continue to boil for a further few minutes.

Remove from heat, stir through butter until melted. Pour the jam into sterilised jars and seal.

A body of research already exists showing aerobic exercise improves brain function in older adults, but there is a limited amount of

literature on how it affects young adults. The Otago researchers, led by Department

of Psychology senior lecturer Dr Liana Machado, set out to test the oft-held belief that the brains of young adults in their prime might not benefit as much as older people from regular sustained exercise.

They took 52 tertiary students, aged

between 18 to 30, and put them through a series of cognitive tests on a computer while measuring oxygen availability in the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as their self-reported exercise frequency.

Dr Machado says their “surprising” findings, just published online in the journal Psychophysiology, show that both blood supply to the brain and cognitive functioning appear to benefit from regular exercise in young adults.

“This provides compelling evidence that

regular exercise, at least five days per week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive ability as young adults – challenging the assumption that living a sedentary lifestyle leads to problems only later in life,” she says.

The research also provides potential insight into understanding why people who regularly engage in aerobic exercise tend to function better on a cognitive level.

“I think the idea that young people do not have to worry about exercising since they are in their prime developmentally is rapidly being overturned by mounting evidence that even the brains of young adults can benefit from regular exercise,” she says.

“The exercise could involve brisk walking or more vigorous activity, and could be made up of a few 10-minute bouts of exercise,

rather than one single block of exercise,” she says.

The researchers also found that body mass index was not a key factor in how well the brain functioned, indicating that regular engagement in physical activity may be more important than body weight.

Dr Machado says she had noticed over the years that university students appeared progressively less fit.

“I wondered whether we might find significant relationships between exercise levels, oxygen availability in the brain and cognition in the young adults, but no studies had considered this in healthy young adults.”

These findings come at a time of increased scientific focus on links between exercise and cognitive health in older adults.

Regular physical activity improves brain function even in young adults considered in their prime and at the height of cognitive ability, according to a new University of Otago study.

Selling the DreamTravel posters dating from the early to mid-20th century on display at

Canterbury Museum were celebrated with an event on January 29. Selling the Dream showcases some of the most iconic images which were used to sell New Zealand to tourists as a magical place to visit – the world’s dream destination.

Designed by an army of talented artists, the posters represent a golden age in this country’s tourism industry which was aimed at both international as well as domestic travellers. The cocktail party held at the museum was an opportunity for invited guests to browse the works and commemorate the skill which created them.Beverley Bolland, Rod Syme

St Martins writer Marlene Bennetts has added another children’s book to her list.

She released The Sawdust Trail late last year and has since received a good review from British magazine Dan-delion.

The fictional book is a compilation of short stories about growing up in sawmill camps around New Zealand.

Ms Bennetts wrote the stories over 30 years and they were all true tales from her childhood.

She grew up on the West Coast and travelled around the country with her parents as they worked in the differ-ent camps.

The book is aimed at pri-mary and intermediate pupils but adults had also been buy-

MultiplefirehazardstobewaryofBy Mark Thomas – Fire Risk ManagementThe last couple of years has seen some quite alarming incidents occurring amongst dry grass accelerated by howling nor’westers.

On Wednesday, 13 fire appliances, assisted by both the Airport Crash Fire team and con-tractors operating nearby, struggled to stop a very wide-fronted grass fire that raced on to the urban rural interface at Hei Hei.

One house has been reported completely lost, another partially destroyed and cars mo-tor cycles, garages and other property con-sumed.

We are still in early February so we can probably expect more to come.

In the same general area the previous Thursday saw an unusual, but not unheard of, cause of fire.

In the early few years of the new century the provision of an appliance garage in a new kitchen was commonplace.

These fixtures are a small alcove in the kitchen joinery with a power point and a wee roller door that are designed mainly for keep-ing of toasters out of sight. The problem is that if the toaster is left plugged in with the switch on, closing the roller can, as it did last week, push the toaster switch to the on position and then prevent it popping up.

This keeps the element on and after some time the garage, then the kitchen, will ignite.

Finally, fireworks are the probable cause of a house fire in Champion St last weekend, three months after Guy Fawkes.

I can’t wait for the damned things to be banned!

ing it, she said.Out of the 28 children’s

books she had written, this was one of her favourites, she said.

In 2003, she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of her services to literature.

She also writes poetry which has been published

internationally and one piece was awarded the Delores Boccanera Poetry Prize.

Ms Bennetts said she is working on another chil-dren’s book and still writes her poetry.

She said The Sawdust Trail is available online from Wheelers Books, Total Library Solutions and New Zealand Books.

Rebecca Cragnolini, who is an NLP practitioner and self hypnosis coach, explains that we are sensory beings which means that

we experience the world through what we see, hear, feel, taste and smell.

As we develop, we learn to use language to describe these sensory experiences and we continue to use sensory-based language for other activities and events. For example, “I can see what you’re saying”, or “we’ll touch on that later”. Rebecca points out that we describe other people in a sensory way, too. They may be bright or a colourful character,

Language of change

When you really take the time to listen to people speaking, it’s fascinating to see how we use language.

or very grounded or even in touch with what’s going on.

When it comes to describing problems, we, too, use sensory language. For example, “I feel so stuck”; “I can’t see a way forward”; “It stinks”, or “I’m trying to shake it off but still feel bitter”. Understanding this can be a powerful tool when it comes to making changes. Rebecca says that it’s important to know how we use sensory language as clues not only to what the problem is but also the solution.

Our minds respond well to symbols, images, sounds and feelings. Last month

Rebecca talked about the power of our imagination. Building on that, she explains that when we combine imagination with sensory language, it gives our mind a clear direction of what it’s aiming for. By being aware of how we describe the issue or change that we want, we create new images, sounds, feelings of what we would like.

She has two helpful tips if you are feeling stuck. Firstly, imagine what breaking free would be like, focusing on what you see, hear, feel and maybe taste and smell. Then imagine yourself striding forward with the solution and experience what it’s like to

look back and take what you have learnt. Another tip is to imagine your problem

written on postix stuck on you and then shaken off, ripped up and left to blow or be washed away, leaving a sweet or refreshing taste.

For more information about groups and individual sessions to make the changes you’d like, visit www.re-mind.net.nz, email [email protected] or ring 021 163 8543.

Lindisfarne was established in 1987 and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies,

and the preschool is licenced for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne.

Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant, and a cook and cleaner.

We pride ourselves on being a multi-cultural centre, both through the

nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff.

The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well-prepared to start primary school.

The new themes have been available in-store in January and already have a strong vote of approval from parents booking parties.

New themes include Frozen, Circus, Ladybug and Monster Truck.

They all come with brilliant invitations that will look great on party guests’ fridges until party day.

And Frozen will not be out of place in our summer heat. All party rooms are air conditioned for your comfort.

Our traditional children’s favourite themes of Pirate, Princess, Dinosaur and Charlie Chipmunk are still available and in demand.

Early bookings are essential to ensure the theme of your choice.

In 2013, the government announced changes to the laws around child restraints. The changes require mandatory use of a child restraint for children up to 7 years

of age, and the use of an appropriate child restraint if there is one available until 8 years old. This new law came into effect on November 1, 2013.

This means that if your child aged between 5 and 7 years has moved to the vehicle seatbelt on their own, they will need to return to a booster seat.

Plunket and other child safety advocates continue to encourage booster seat use for

Privately run nursery school

Families are more than welcome to call in at any time to view the programme and meet the teachers.

Booster seats for childreneven longer, as research shows that until a child is around 148 centimetres tall, they need a booster seat to get the best protection in a crash.

Plunket is pleased to give advice to anyone unsure of their position regarding this change in legislation. They hire and sell all types of child restraints, including booster seats, and will install these in your vehicle free of charge. They also offer free advice and guidance so you can be sure you are giving your child the best protection when they travel in your vehicle.
