RECAP OF Dragon Point Navigation Challenge

June 30, 2018

Turnout was not what we hoped for, but I

would like to share with you my experi-

ence. ANYONE who has taken a boating

course will have a wonderful time on the

water. The course is laid out for you, and

the directions are straight forward.

The course consists of 7 legs. There is a

conversion chart that shows how long to

run a leg given your chosen speed. All

you need to do is have someone driving

the boat in a straight line at a consistent

speed and another person keeping time.

At the end of a leg, the person keeping

time calls out the new bearing, and you’re

off again. You CANNOT use your GPS,

but you don’t need to. At the end of 7

legs, drop a marker so the judge can

determine how close to “on spot” you

are.

It was not intimidating-it was FUN. So

many squadron members keep asking for

an on-the-water activity or a fun activity.

The Dragon Point Nav Challenge gives

you both. On the left, you can see Jim

Merker showing Jose Casals how to use

the graph. Off he went, and to his amaze-

ment he realized how “off” his compass

probably is. Regardless, his boat was

close to where Jim and I ended up.

Next year, please enter. You will love it!!

DRAGON TALES

I want to first congratulate Adam Smith for successfully completing and

passing Advanced Piloting. Well done! I would be remiss if we didn’t also

thank Bill Veit for his hard work and dedication as our AP instructor and

Ernst for facilitating the mix of in-person and virtual classes. It is truly an

honor to teach alongside them.

Secondly, if you haven’t heard about our upcoming weather course, you must have been living

under a rock. This will be an excellent course because we are collaborating with the Melbourne

National Weather Service. It will be our material with instructors provided by the Weather

Service. Better yet, we will be holding this at the National Weather Service facility on Croton

Road. Since this is such a great opportunity, we are going to allow members who have already

completed this course to attend at a reduced rate while seats are available. Please see page 9 for

more details.

Lastly, I need your help. We have four, soon to be five, Vessel Safety Check Examiners in

training. In order for them to become fully certified, each must inspect five vessels under

supervision. This is where you, our members, come in. We need to inspect 20-25 vessels that

meet these four requirements: 1) it must have an engine, 2) the owner or an operator must be

present, 3) the vessel must be less than 65 ft, and 4) it must be a recreational vessel, no

commercial fishing boats. So please ask your neighbors, friends, coworkers, and members of

other groups with which you are associated. Running or not; likely to pass or not (not that any of

us would have a boat that couldn’t pass); in the water, on a trailer, or on the hard; please ask

them to contact me at [email protected]!

Remember, we do not just offer boating education –

we provide superior boating education!

Check our website www.bananariversps.org for more information.

The August speaker will be Navy

Capt. (R) Andy Petruska on “

Facts and Lessons Learned from

the Sinking of the US Merchant

Ship, El Faro in 2015”.

We are investigating having a

paddle boat outing on 21

September at Turkey Creek. Everyone should bring

a lunch to trade with someone else.

Ed Department Report:

P/C James Merker reported that the Jr. Basic Boating

course held in Satellite Beach (24 -26 June) had 8

students attend.

The Advanced Piloting tests are at USPS for grading.

Two Vessel Safety Check classes were held at Jim’s

home with 4 students passing the class. Another

class is planned for the first week of August; please

contact Jim. Each student must perform 5 vessel

checks, so we are looking for boats to evaluate.

A Weather course has been set up with the Na-

tional Weather Service in Melbourne starting 5 Sep-

tember and running thru 24 October, with the test

on 31 October. The course requires a minimum of

10 people to attend; although, the NWS would like

14 to attend.

Secretary’s Report:

Membership is at 65, plus 2 associate members.

New name tags are available for pickup. Members

can order the new name tags at a cost of $7.00 per

each magnetic badge.

Treasurer’s Report:

Lt/C Monika Bradley stated savings and checking

balances. She has entered all BRSPS financial data

into Quickbooks.

The meeting was adjourned at 2035.

Next General meeting will be held on August 20,

2018 at Beef O’Brady’s at 3030 Lake Washington

Rd., Melbourne. Next Executive Committee

meeting will be held on August 14, 2018 at BAAB.

FROM THE SQUADRON MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN: P/D/C Bob Becker, SN

This month I am going to start off asking a question to see how smart you all are?

Question: Of all the many BRS&PS committees, which one includes ALL of the

squadron members? Give up? Well it’s the Membership Committee.

Each of you as squadron members should be promoting the many benefits belonging to

the squadron offers to all boaters who become USPS members.

But do you know some of our benefits? Here are just a few:

First is camaraderie. Webster’s Dictionary defines this as: “good will and warm feeling between or

among friends”. As a squadron member you certainly are among both new and old friends. And once

again, members who have lots of boating knowledge who can assist you with your boating problems.

Second is education. There are so many USPS courses covering just about all aspects of boating.

Third is insurance. By taking the various USPS courses many of the various insurance companies will

give you a discount for your boat insurance.

Fourth are the various discounts that the USPS national organization has arranged for you, its members.

These can be found at the USPS National website. Hopefully you are taking advantage of the above but

just as important is to talk about USPS membership to your fellow boaters.

BRS&PS has 65 plus membership. If each of our 60 plus members brought in just one new member we

could double our size, resulting in more camaraderie, more new ideas, more fun and more squadron

activities.

Do you belong to a Yacht Club? Do you use a specific marina to store your boat? Do you belong to a

boating club other than the USPS? If so, these are the places where you, as members of the Membership

Committee can talk up the attributes of the BRS&PS. You

can even direct them to the USPS national web site or

better still invite them as your guests to one of our

monthly general membership meetings.

We have a great squadron; you can make it even greater by

getting new members!

Bridge Nominations Are Open

Each year our members are asked to identify the leadership of the Squadron for the next year. Every member has the opportunity and responsibility to nominate any member who is best able to serve as an elected officer of the Squadron.

The time to make nominations is NOW. It is an important responsibility and not to be set aside or taken lightly. Those nominated, and if elected, mold the future of our Squadron.

The next page lists all the positions open on the Bridge, Executive Committee, and supporting committees. Please let the Nominating Committee Chair, Lt Nancy Adams, S, know whom you would like to nominate. The easiest way to do this is to call Nancy at 417 850-1147 who can fill out a nominating form.

Every nomination must be accompanied by YOUR name. All nominations are held in confidence. The deadline is September 15. The election will be held at the September General Membership meeting on September 17.

Don’t be bashful to nominate YOURSELF. If you would like a detailed description of any of the positions, go to the USPS website or contact P/V/C Dick Peoples, SN at 321 698-9265.

Please remember BRSPS is a volunteer organization and without members who are willing to serve, the Squadron can not exist.
