performance of Horne (who is also

featured on pages 6-7 of this maga-

to attract new patrons and Chamber

members to the event.

“We are ecstatic to get a performer

the caliber of Kimmie Horne to head-

line the event,” added Taste of South-

field Co-Chair Doug Davis. “She has

an international following and we

hope to utilize her stature to stir ex-

citement and get people to come to

the event. We will also look to en-

courage new businesses to join the

Chamber. I think this

is a win-win for eve-

“We are eagerly anticipating this

heights.

Billed as a pre-

Tony asked her to sing backup as he

worked with Motown producer

Hank Cosby.

“I sang background at that studio

session and Hank encouraged me

to sing lead,” said Horne. “I felt

so free, natural and liberated and

that experience changed my

life. So when I left the

studio, I decided that I

wanted to sing as a

career.”

Horne subsequently

joined the group New Life

and began developing her

singing chops. Around that

time, Horne linked up with

bandleader Norma Jean

Bell and the All Stars

and later with David

Myles and Milestones, who

both encouraged her to branch

out and develop herself as a

solo act.

Horne would forge a reputa-

and MGM Grand as well as stints at

Las Vegas‟ Bellagio Resort and Casino

and Caesar‟s Palace. But what really

set Horne apart was her foray into inter-

national performance circuits as she

became a huge overseas draw in Japan.

“Performing in Japan and building a fan

base there has been absolutely incredi-

ble,” she said. “The Japanese audience

has very discerning music tastes and

sensibilities. They love jazz and soul

music and performing there has been a

wonderful highlight of my career.”

Another highlight to Horne‟s burgeon-

ing career was her decision to include

more jazz in her repertoire, which led to

her being mentored by the top artists in

the genre.

She sought out the late jazz bandleader,

arranger and pianist Teddy Harris Jr.,

whose New Breed Bebop Society Or-

chestra was a breeding

ground for up-and-coming

jazz musicians. She also

hooked up with Thomas

"Beans" Bowles, who was

a studio mainstay dur-

days, and mentored

jazz standards without compromising

the original intent and direction of the

melodies. On the disc, Horne is

backed by the Japanese-based Kyoto

Orchestra who create a unique bal-

symphonic harmonies of each tune.

Horne‟s most recent accomplishment

is being named the official headliner

for the 7th Annual Taste of South-

this year as a premier food festival

that combines culinary dining and

entertainment.

“I‟m really excited about the Taste of

Southfield,” she said. “The South-

field Town Center Atrium is gor-

geous and I look forward to perform-

ing there with my full band. It means

a lot to be able to connect with music

lovers in the City of Southfield. I

will be performing a blend of R & B

and jazz and will look to have fun

with all the compositions that we will

present.”

POETRY

FEATURE

Longtime poet/educator Ber-Henda Williams has

created a welcoming platform for emerging poets

with the long-running Poetry, Pages & Scribes.

T he popular cultural arts series Po-

etry, Pages & Scribes (aka PPS)

has grown to become a platform

that introduces new and emerging

poets, storytellers, literary and music artists

to the general public during its 5-year run at

the Southfield Public Library.

PPS host and founder poet/activist Ber-

Henda Williams originally started the series

under another name, “The Eargasm Artistic

Collective” at Bert‟s at Eastern Market in

Detroit, Michigan, but moved it to the South-

field Public Library to help her reach a

broader demographic of artists.

“I believe it was a very wise and intelligent

decision to move the series to the Southfield

Library,” said Williams. “Southfield has

been celebrated for its cultural diversity and

placing the series at its cultural crown jewel

(the library) enabled me to extend its reach of

and attract poets and artists of all races, back-

grounds and cultures.”

According to Williams, PPS has become a

forum that promotes a welcoming environ-

ment - essential to helping poets develop

their craft, hone their talents and discover

their true and authentic voice.

Pictured above: Author/poet Ber-Henda Wil-liams has become a mentor to aspiring poets and

her PPS series has provided a welcoming envi-

ronment for ‟newbies‟ to work on their craft.

“When people discover that they

like poetry, it is very gratifying for

me,” said Williams. “Poetry is not

just entertainment, but a way of

helping people to find their voice.

It‟s a beautiful feeling to realize

your potential, and I‟d like to think

that PPS has helped to empower the

poets who have participated over the

years to recognize their value, em-

brace their talent and become com-

fortable in their own skin.”

for

Page 11: Southfield Chamber · and later with David Myles and Milestones, who ... at Detroit‟s iconic Baker‟s Keyboard A ... whose New Breed Bebop Society Or-

a community impact.”

Williams hopes to brand PPS into the

educational and faith-based communities

in the near future.

“PPS is evolving and my sincere prayer

for it is to become fully entrenched in

the community,” she said. “We want to

reach schools, churches, nursing homes,

shelters, etc, and be fully accessible to

all throughout the metro area.”

As for Williams, she will continue her

foray into authoring books. Her first

book, “Memoirs of the Human Experi-

ence and Everything Else in Between,”

was well-received among literary pun-

dits. She will soon follow it up with

“Siren Songs,” a reflective work that

delves into feminist, humanitarian and

empowerment themes.

“The book is a chroni-

cle of my own personal

growth as both a

woman and artist,” she

said. “I‟m very excited

because PPS has helped

me grow in so many

ways. I feel truly

blessed.”

Southfield Cable 15 has run PPS on its

channel for much of its 5-year tenure.

Viewers have often commented on PPS‟

impressive ability to create awareness

about the arts and to mentor new artists

and groom them for bigger stages.

“I felt that in the development of an art-

ist, you are always in a state of growth,”

said Williams. “PPS is like stepping into

very warm and inviting waters. Once

you are there, it is very comfortable. I

wanted to promote an environment that

no matter where you were in your stage

of artistic development, you could come

and be loved and accepted. I get calls

and emails all the time talking about how

the show has touched people and made

them unafraid to share their art from

their hearts. It‟s really satisfying for

me.”

In addition to reaching

its 5th year milestone,

the series has been

named the official char-

ity at this year‟s Taste

of Southfield, and as

such will receive a por-

tion of the proceeds

from the event.

“It‟s so touching to be

recognized for making a

difference in the com-

munity,” she said. “It

warms my heart to be

named the „official

charity‟ for the Taste Fest because it re-

affirms that all of our efforts are having
