Engagement Reporting We are continuing to make available via the Student and Parent Portal, regular updates of your son’s level of effort and engagement in his various subjects. This is being monitored for him here at school as well. We are asking teachers to make an entry for the subject(s) they teach him each period using the scale: Fully engaged Some engagement or Disengaged We consider your son to be fully engaged if he is:

• prepared for each lesson (with appropriate stationery or gear) • completing set tasks or activities in class • participating positively in class discussion or group work • making a satisfactory effort to complete any homework given.

To see how your son is performing in his classes, we encourage you to regularly sign in at the Portal (https://portal.sbhs.school.nz) and from the Menu choose Results and then Class Efforts. You can monitor Engagement levels over time for individual subjects by clicking on the relevant subject name (see below for an example). We encourage you to contact the appropriate teacher(s) if you have any concerns about engagement levels in any subject(s).

Please e-mail our Data Manager, Darran Roberts ([email protected]), or phone him here at school (211-3003 ext. 828), if you need a hand or have any questions.

School Museum

In Week 3 the Year 7’s visited the school museum. Whilst there they got to spend time finding information and appreciating the difference between school then and now. The students always learn a lot about our rich history and we would like to thank Lynley Dear and Ken Bowie for giving their time to show classes through.

Music Department News

Momentum, our Senior Choir, is up and running for the year. With 48 students who have elected to seize opportunities and take a step outside of their comfort zone, we are at our strongest point in our proud 4-year history. This year, we are competing in the annual New Zealand Choral Federation Big Sing competition, and hoping to gain coaching from Andrew Withington, who was the director of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir for 10 years. If students missed the audition opportunity, they can still see Mr Buick to check their voice range and join up.

Unison, our Year 7 and 8 Choir, will be beginning in the next fortnight. Students in Year 7 and 8 who would like to join the choir will audition to check voice range – no one who wants to sing in the choir will miss out, the process is only to ensure that we can select appropriate repertoire for the boys’ voices. Rehearsals will take place on Wednesday lunchtimes, and we will be working towards participating in the annual Invercargill Schools’ Sing Out. If you have any questions, please contact Mr Buick on [email protected]

Itinerant Music All lessons have been scheduled and teaching through the programme began this week. If your son has not received a letter and sticker confirming his lesson time (these were distributed through Tutor Teachers), please contact Mr Buick at michael.buick@sbhs,school.nz to check. We have managed to schedule lessons throughout the year for all students who submitted their forms, so students need to remember that they have made a year long commitment to learning their respective instrument.

If you want to make a big difference with your music theory, we could have the answer! On Tuesdays from 3:30pm until 4:30pm (4:15pm until mid-March) and Wednesdays from 3:00pm until 4:30pm, students can work with Mr Buick to learn Theory basics. We’ll be using the Trinity College Theory Syllabus build a solid progression of skills and understanding. Costs will apply for workbooks – students can pay for these at the Office, and bring a receipt to Mr Buick who has a supply of the books up to Grade 4 (anything higher will be ordered by him) Trinity Theory Workbook Prices for 2019

As we are publishing, auditions for Footloose: The Musical, this year’s Senior Production, are taking place. The Southland Girls’ High School team are leading this year’s show. Footloose will be held at CentreStage on 28th – 30th May. Look out for updates on rehearsals and tickets when they go on sale. Junior Production This year’s Junior Production will take place at the end of November. Expect to see a release of information about the show and details about auditions early in Term 3. While we’re keeping the show under wraps for the moment, it might be a good idea to dust off any roller skates and leg warmers you have sitting around at home… Shakespeare In The Park On Tuesday 12th February, a group of Senior Drama and Theatre Tech students took the opportunity to attend the final Dress Rehearsal of this year’s Shakespeare In The Park Rude Mechanicals Revival conceived and directed by old boy Jade Gillies and Carla Wilson. This was a fantastic opportunity to experience drama taking place in an alternative setting, and seeing actors refining their craft up close and personal. Throughout the year, seniors studying Drama and Theatre Tech will be offered opportunities to attend various performances, and where possible, we encourage them to make the most of the chance to take in a wide range of performance styles to explore the various elements that bring theatre to life.

Outdoor Education As another Southland summer draws to a close, the Outdoor Education programme has been making the most of local surf breaks. With the help of Southland Surf School Instructors, JoJo and Dallas the students have been shredding and learning about the science of surfing, aka meteorology, which is an art form here in Southland. The students still have an action-packed term with weekly surf sessions and Year 12 students preparing for the Kepler in March. Miss Hamilton Teacher of Outdoor Education

SBHS Cricket 1st XI SBHS 1st XI travelled to The Willows Cricket Club for our annual match and were treated to a beautiful day and wonderful hospitality. SBHS batted first against Willows in a 40 over match. The Willows Side included ex pupil Jack Mockford and myself. Playing at Willows has always been something I've wanted to tick off the list. Ken Singleton also played against his Dad's cousin, Michael, who was captaining Willows. This highlights the family feel of Willows and why it was established. It is hard to explain Willows if you haven't been and everyone should go along to watch at least one match. Batting first SBHS made 203, with Hayden Hart 70, Benji Culhane 51, Jed Mockford 24 not out and Ian De Reuck 21 the leading scorers. I managed to take 1 - 14 from 7 overs, with my players treating me with a lot more respect than they should have, due to being terrified to get out to me! After a wonderful lunch Willows set about chasing the total. Tim McConnell made 35 and Jack Mockford 28, but the SBHS bowling was excellent, restricting Willows to 140 runs. Jordan Tooby took 3 wickets and Blair McKenzie 2 wickets in a good team bowling performance. Willows is not about winning and losing though. It is about the tradition and companionship of cricket. go to Willows to reinforce the values of cricket and what can be learned from playing the game. Thanks to Mike Dorme and his team for all their efforts and we look forward to playing at the Willows again next year. Ian Mockford SBHS 1st XI Coach 1st XI On 11 and 12 of February SBHS 1st XI played Shirley Boys' High School in our annual interschool. Winning the toss, SBHS captain Brayden Thomas chose to bowl first on our home wicket. Jordan Tooby (3) and Alec Mathieson (2) took early wickets and Shirley Boys' were bowled out for 135 runs. Hayden Hart also took 3 wickets with his left arm spin. Despite the early loss of debutant Shaun Clapperton, SBHS batted well early with Brayden Thomas (28), Ian De Reuck (45) and Hayden Hart (80) getting us through to 225 all out. Shirley were very conservative in their 2nd innings and despite numerous appeals, they fought through to 138/5 at the end of the 2nd day. J Hooper batted defiantly with 61 not out. Jordan Tooby took another 2 wickets for 5 for the match. Ian Mockford SBHS 1st XI Coach Year 10 On the 18th February the group of SBHS Year 10's travelled to Dunedin to play King’s High School in the NZCT Final. The winning team would travel to the national finals in late March. SBHS made the final after defeating Taieri College and Otago Boys’ High School. All 3 of these matches were played in Dunedin so it made it a tough schedule for the team and coach Cody Mason. In the final King’s batted first and made 212/5 off their 40 overs. The SBHS bowlers took too long to build consistency and this was shown on the scoreboard, which was probably 40 runs more than we should have conceded. Jack O'Connell took 3 for 18 off 5 overs and was the pick of the bowlers. In the chase there were several starts, but we lacked the one big score to get us through to 213. Aaron Hart (31), Hunter Cairns (25), Reid Murray (37) and Rico Muliaina (30) all batted well and the total of 204 would have been enough in most matches. Thanks to Cody for taking this side through the season and the parents who came to watch and helped with transport when required. Ian Mockford SBHS Cricket

Interschool SBHS v King’s High School – 17-18 February

Cricket Winning the toss, SBHS 1st XI elected to bowl first with Alec Mathieson taking 2 early wickets. King’s then established some good partnerships and worked their way through to 244 all out. Alec Mathieson was the pick of the SBHS bowlers with 4 - 39 off 14 overs. Blair McKenzie also took 2 wickets. The King’s bowlers then bowled well getting movement and hitting good lengths, which put our batsmen under pressure. Benji Culhane was the best of our batsmen with 31 runs, but we batted poorly as a group and were bowled out for 107. King’s then looked to score runs quickly to set us a target to chase. The SBHS bowlers and fielders did an excellent job to restrict their scoring to 64/4 off 13 overs. Jordan Tooby picked up 3 wickets. This meant SBHS had to score 202 to win off the remaining time available. We went out with the intention to chase the runs and build partnerships. Brayden Thomas (31), Ken Singleton (41), Benji Culhane (25), Hayden Hart (46) and Blair McKenzie (22) all batted well in the chase. With 1 ball left in the day SBHS was on 201 and the scores were tied. The last ball ended being a dot ball and the game ended being tied. Ultimately it was a great game of cricket played in positive fashion by both teams. King’s set us a target that was achievable, and our boys batted with a lot more intent in the 2nd innings, which was positive. The outcome reflected the nature of the match. Athletics Standards Sports Day 2019 A wet yet warm Athletics Standards Day on Thursday 21st February, saw the five houses of Utley, Grant, Deaker, Coldstream and Pearce go head to head to compete for the title of Athletics House Champions. With a revised Entrance and Banner competition, it was first blood to Deaker, taking out the Banner and best Entrance House. Grant and Coldstream were tied for second, with Uttley and Pearce fourth equal. Even the wet and odd shower throughout the morning could not dampen the spirits of 100’s of students, trying to qualify for the Championship Day held the following week at Surrey Park. A drier afternoon session saw the House relays be dominated by Grant and Deaker. However, the prestigious Senior Boys Over 16 Relay was won by Coldstream. Under 11 Relays - 1st Grant Under 12 Relays – 1st Deaker Under 13 Relays – 1st Grant Under 14 Relays – 1st Deaker Under 15 Relays – 1st Pearce Under 16 Relays – 1st Grant Over 16 Relays – 1st Coldstream After completing the Field and Track events, it was a matter of counting all the results from throughout the day which was done by Mrs Petelo, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Mortimer, and Ms Bischop. End Results were: 5th place Uttley 4th Place Pearce 3rd place Deaker 2nd place Grant 1st place COLDSTREAM So, the 2019 Athletics Standards day was won by Coldstream on a wet, but entertaining day which saw 100’s of boys qualify for the School Championship Day. A big thank you to all staff that helped run the activities on the day, and that helped prepare the grounds, score sheets, gear and standards list. A very successful day. Mr Meijer & Mrs Boyce

SBHS Softball Report The SBHS Senior Softball team competed in the Southland Secondary School Softball Tournament on Sunday 17th February 2019. They were coached by Marc Johnson and Rosie De Goldi, managed by Jo Te Tai. Unfortunately, there were only three teams entered – SBHS, SGHS and James Hargest. With a squad of 16 players, SBHS firstly accounted for SGHS (only narrowly though) and then beat James Hargest, qualifying for the final in first place. Hargest went on to beat SGHS so it was game on for the final where it went down to the wire with SBHS coming out on top 8-7. All three games were good preparation for the team who will be heading to Christchurch at the end of March to compete in the Division 2 Southland Island Secondary Schools Tournament.

NZ Softball The NZ International Softball Academy was formed in 2007. It hosts international softball tours and academy programmes that expose players to elite softball, elite coaching and life experiences while creating better people and better softballers. Their mission is to facilitate a friendly exchange and understanding among softball players from different countries and regions while exposing players, especially youth players, to elite softball at an international level. In eleven years, they have selected and hosted over 60 New Zealand teams. They have become the world’s leading overseas softball academy, taking more teams overseas than any other softball organisation in the world. Southland Boys’ High players, Kiahn Johnson and Ben Symon have been selected in the U18 Tour to Europe. They will compete in Joudrs International Cup Boys’ Tournament in Prague, Czech Republic and play a series against the German National Men’s Team Frankfurt, Germany.
