ABSTRACT

Greenstone belts are the predominant features of the map area.

The mineralization noted so far is confined in the metasedimentary and metavolcanic units of these belts, trending N 60 0 East, mostly sulphide minerals were encountered Pb, Zn, Ni, Py, etc. Possibility of gold is not ruled out.

The belts are east-west trending and sulphide bearing,' with quartz veins of varying dimensions.

These belts were centre of exploration activity since the early thirties mainly for gold and sulphide minerals.

The scope of the report is confined to only a small part of these east-west trending belt around Southorn Lake area, (North of Kino Lake).

The claim group staked is registered with the Sioux Lookout, Mining Recorder (Patricia Mining Division), Ontario.

INTRODUCTION

The map area lies about 30 miles due west of "Big Trout Lake" (53 C 52' N and 90 0 00' W).

Big Trout Lake, one of the largest lakes in northwestern Ontario, is part of the Indian Reserve. The confines of the reserve cover most of the islands and the perripheral area around the lake.

The main centre of the reserve is the post island, which has a float plane base and an air strip.

The Indian Reserve is served by "Bearskin Airways" and there is a regular scheduled flight from Sioux Lookout every day. Sioux Lookout can be reached by highway, CN Rail and Bearskin Air either from Thunder Bay or Winnipeg.

The staked area ( see map #2 ) can be reached by float plane in summer or on skis in winter. Planes of different carrying capacity can be chartered from Big Trout Lake. Also along the north shore of the lake (Southorn) there is a good winter trail, well cut and maintained, directly reaching Big Trout Lake at the east end and Bearskin Lake at the west end.

Supplies can be purchased at Big Trout Lake.

Methods of Mapping

The mapping is of reconnaisance in nature.

[l(ii!

Some days were lost due to adverse weather conditions.

The size of the mapped area is about 500 acres.

The claim group is situated along the south shore of Southern Lake, running east-west.

The traverses were conducted along east-west direction running parallel to lake shore, wherever possible ( swamps were avoided).

There are few small lakes at the southern part of the claim group, but mostly thick vegetation and muskeg make it difficult to examine the outcrops around the area.

Distribution of Outcrops

Outcrop density within the mapped area is generally good. The density is fairly high along the lake shore. In the southern part density is low. But the possibility of further investigation exists towards Kino Lake at the south end, presumably the density is much higher. All along the mapped area greenstones are well exposed, and the contacts are well defined between metavolcanics and metasediments and basic lava flows.

Topography

The map area is covered by thick vegetation, mostly by spruce, pine, silver birch, alder brush, lichens and moss.

Page 9: SOUTHORN LAKE AREA RPT - Ontario...thirties mainly for gold and sulphide minerals. The scope of the report is confined to only a small part of these east-west trending belt around

- 4 -

The/elief is rather flat, roughly between 60' to 70'.

Absence of soil profile is noted throughout the area.

The drainage pattern is towards the northeast, and all the streams and creeks encountered seem to have a steady flow, which drains into Southorn Lake.

The stream sediments are mostly composed of sand grains, with pyrite mineralization very prominent.

Exploration History:

The exploration history around "Southorn Lake" is rather vague. No assessment record exists at the mining recorders office at Sioux Lookout or at Toronto assessment file section of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

But the area has been investigated and the presence of old claim posts, and picket lines are in evidence.

Geology:

The map area lies within the 'Superior Province 1 of the Canadian

Shield.

Most of the rocks are of early pre-cambrian age, and form bifurcating

and folded belts of metavolcanics, metasedimentary and associated

rocks {greywacke, amphibolite etc. See map #1.)

The belt marked Kino Lake belt is of immediate importance to us.

It's trend is east west, that is Big Trout Lake at the eastern end

and Severn Lake at the western end. The same belt splits at the

north western end of Kino Lake, and is known as the Fat Lake belt.

Kino Lake belt consists of mafic metavolcanics, metasediments and some scattered pegmatites as outcrops. The mafic metavolcanics

are dark green to black in colour, quartz, carbonate, hydrated iron

oxide, pyrite, chlorite ore common accessories.

Numerous quartz veins intersects metavolcanics.

Some of the veins are stained {dark to light brown), most are milky

white.

The dimensions vary from a few feet to a few inches in width and the lateral extensions run from 4 feet to 20 feet average.

Visible sulphide minerals were not encountered.

But the possibility of gold is not ruled out in these veins as they

are sometimes associated with the carbonates in shear zones.

The sedimentary rocks are highly metamorphosed and recrystallized

to amphibolite, quartz-feldspar-amphibolite schist, these rocks

are strongly sheared, and mineralization has been observed in a

Page 11: SOUTHORN LAKE AREA RPT - Ontario...thirties mainly for gold and sulphide minerals. The scope of the report is confined to only a small part of these east-west trending belt around

- 6 -

sheared zone. (Sample #15785) Claim #611552.The extent of mineralization follows a downward trend due to extensive nature of shearing only dessiminated portion of the mineralized zone was observed at the surface.

Structural Geology:

The belt in question is part of the syncline. The foliation of metavolcanics (schistosity) follow the easternly trend, dipping usually 80 0 to 90 0 . Streams follow a radial pattern of drainage which are draining into Southern Lake.

Economic Geology: (Property Description)

Mineralization along the claim group occurs within the gossan manteled shear zone.

In claim #(Pa 611551) see map #2, a trench (7'X4'X3') cut across the zone, which exposes the mineralized section, in a wide silicified mafic metavolcanics. (Trench dug by previous exploration party.) The mineralization observed trends North 60 0 East.

The assay values from this trench gives .918 to l .1756 Zn, .08356 to .07# Pb, and silver values from .17 oz/ton to .35 oz/ton.

The mineralized zone was followed further west for about 60'. The width varies from 10' to 50', and grab samples were collected. The values of Pb, Zn and Ag range from .010?^ to .08356 for Pb, for Zn it ranges from .264/4 to .01056 and Ag .49 oz/ton to .17 oz/ton.

The mineralized showing was further traced in claim #611552, in chloritized schist (metasedimentary) directly on the lake shore in a strongly sheared zone. The mineralization ranges from dessiminated to massive, (following a downward trend). The assay value (sample #15785) gives .09225 Zn, .04056 Cu, .02556 Ni, and .1656 oz/ton of Ag.

Page 12: SOUTHORN LAKE AREA RPT - Ontario...thirties mainly for gold and sulphide minerals. The scope of the report is confined to only a small part of these east-west trending belt around

- 7 -

Further mineralization was traced in claim #611562, in a north easterly trending outcrop in similar rock types observed in claim #611551.

Two samples were collected, the values were marginal. Mineralization was observed also in the eastern part of the claim group bordering claim #611557. No sample was collected.

High magnetic response was noted, due to erratic behaviour of the compass needle.

All prospectina activity was confined on the south shore of Southern Lake. About 12 claims were staked.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The mineralized showings in the claim group so far encountered, especially claim #611551 deserves further attention.

The showings are in epidotized mafic metavolcanics.

Grab samples were taken along the oxidized zone for about 10' to 12', it ranges between T.17% to .015& Zn and traces of Pb, Silver (?) are also present. The creeks are devoid of any sediment material, composed of mostly coarse to fine sand with mineral particles clearly visible, possible (Py, Po, and other sulphides present).

For further exploration activities, these creeks are recommended for heavy mineral analysis. The sands along the bottom of the creek to be sampled for about 50 m intervals, which will give further clue to any sulphide body present.

1. Detailed Magnetometer survey and suitable E.M. system such as E.M. 16 or 17, also can be used for tracing the conductor.

2. Sampling of quartz veins in mafic volcanics and analysing for gold. The stained veins might be of definite value for gold mineralization.

CONCLUSION

The apparent low value along the mineralized zone doesn't give a conclusive picture of the potentialty of the area.

The zone is very much oxidized, further investigation, as said before, (stream geochemistry, geophysics) might lead to further developments.

ignetic Interpretation, Lake Southern prospect, Ontario.

An^rea approximately 2 miles long in the east-west direction and h mile wide in

the north-south direction along the southern adge of Southern Lake was covered

by magnetic readings gridded at 200' intervals in each direction. The readings

were taken by McPhar magnetometer, model M-700. The magnitude of anomalies was

so large that the normal correction applied in magnetic surveying for hydrocarbons

were unnecessary. The map was contoured at the interval of l 000 gammes.

The map shows several magnetic anomalies of l 000 gammes or more. The largest

anomaly is marked A on the map. It appears that the anomaly is the southern

fringe of a very large positive anomaly. The extent or the magnitude of the

anomaly cannot be defined yet. However, the anomaly is quite likely to be associated

with a placer deposit of high concentration of heavy minerals including gold. It is

strongly recommended that this anomaly be mapped over the lake after the freeze up

and steps be taken before then to stake the land.

Another strong positive anomaly is located about l 000' SW of the anomaly

described above. However, the magnitude of the anomaly is considerably less. It

could be associated with an intrusive rich in mafic minerals including sulfide ores.

This body extends ENE for some considerable distance, again possibly beneath the lake.

Third significant anomaly is located near the western edge of the area. This is a

negative anomaly and could be associated with an acidic intrusive like Pegmatite

which should be tested for mineral composition.

In conclusion the magnetic survey points out an excellent placer deposit and two

very encouraging intrusives, one sulfides and the other acidic Pegmatite. Detailing

the first anomaly and testing the other two is strongly recommended.
