he launch of Southside couldn’t be happening at a better time, our area is booming and this is anexciting time for businesses and residents alike.

Our £400 million airport tramline has just celebrated its first birthday with thousands of passengersmaking a grand total of 1.88 million journeys since the line opened last year.

July saw the opening of Wythenshawe’s brand new £6 million transport interchange, the next link in the chainof regeneration for Wythenshawe and South Manchester. Built by local apprentices it has been about jobsand employment from the outset.

Those of us who live and work in Wythenshawe have always known what a great location our garden city is, itnow appears that this is reaching a much wider audience. In June the M22 postcode featured in the top tenpostcodes in the Country for house price increases.

In the same month the airport announced £1billion worth of investment in its transformation programme.Doubling the number of airport jobs to 40,000 within 30 years and adding 10m annual passengers in 10years.

MediPark, created by the University Hospital of South Manchester is aiming to attract major life science andmedical research companies, with hopes that by 2026, it will employ around 4,500 people.

Finally only last month during President Xi Jinping's visit to Manchester a £130m 'China Cluster' was announced to lure Far East firms to AirportCity, as part of our £800m business park project.

It is a fantastic story of renewed confidence in our area. I hope that Southside, as well as celebrating the ongoing achievements and successesof South Manchester, will be able to play its part in connecting local residents to the jobs and opportunities being generated by our amazingrenaissance.

ementia Friendly Swimming sessions have taken place atWythenshawe Forum this year and are part of a health project tobuild a network of dementia friendly pools for people affected by

the condition.

Delivered in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association andManchester City Council, the Dementia Friendly Swimming project ispart of a wider public health campaign to create dementia friendlycommunities across England.

Manchester is one of the first areas in the country to pilot the projectand has almost 4,000 people living with the condition.

What is a Dementia Friendly Swimming session? The swimming sessions focus on the needs of those living withdementia and their carers. They offer the opportunity to socialise andswim in a safe and supportive environment with trained staff on hand.

At Wythenshawe Forum, this has meant increasing staff awarenessand understanding of the condition. Key staff have attended in-depthdementia awareness training, delivered by the Alzheimer’s Society, andthere are opportunities for others to attend a Dementia Friendsworkshop.

The centre is also looking at how it can create a dementia friendlyenvironment. This may include additional signage, making groupchanging areas available, providing an allocated area in the pool toswim during sessions or creating a quiet area where people attendingcan go if needed.

The initiative is already proving popular, enabling those affected bydementia and their carers to enjoy quality time together and tomaintain their fitness and wellbeing levels.

Dementia Friendly swims take place every Friday at WythenshaweForum, 1.00-2pm.

If you are affected by the condition or are caring for someone whodoes and you enjoy swimming, why not come along and try asession?

Please contact Catriona Sudlow on 07583 134810 or [email protected] for further details or toarrange attendance.

Jobcentre Plus recently re-launched their Manchester andCheshire Twitter accounts. We share information on local jobs, advice, events and opportunities between 8am and 11pm, 7days a week.

But it doesn’t stop there: a 3D printer can turn yourideas into reality! And the new Sprout PC is perfect for creativesto manipulate images and designs using the in-built 3D scanner.

The new “maker space” has a layout that can be adapted tomeetings, networking sessions, seminars and workshops. Recentevents have included a talk by Carla Taylor from Penelope’sKitchen at Media City, and a live screening from Londonfeaturing Deborah Meaden from Dragon’s Den as part of GlobalEntrepreneurship Week.
