“Like every football fan on this island, I am delighted to see both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland competing in this year’s UEFA European Championship,” Senator Richmond said.

“Qualification in itself was a massive achievement, but it is great to see both teams playing

well.“It is my belief, however,

that merging the two teams would have huge benefits for all involved in the sport across Ireland. I can’t help but think how much stronger an all-Ireland Football Association and team could be with the likes of Kyle Lafferty and Shane Long playing alongside each other.”

Senator Richmond calls for all-Ireland soccer team

The President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, is pictured with organisers David McWilliams and Sian Smith at the opening of the Zurich Dalkey Book Festival in Dillon’s Park. Bob Geldof, Elif Shafak, Brian Eno, Malcolm Gladwell. Yanis Varoufakis, Dambisa Moyo, Michael Gambon and John Banville were just some of the writers and artists among the line up for festival which was officially opened by the President on Thursday, June 16. PHOTO: CONOR MCCABE

Senator Richmond added: “It would also be hugely beneficial to the game at grassroots level, as it would mean a pooling of resources in a united effort to get more boys and girls off the couch and onto the sports field.

“With a lifetime involvement in many sports, I have seen at first-hand the benefits of cross border cooperation for sporting bodies, whether it was playing school boy rugby matches in Belfast or during a more recent visit to Craigavon to play American Football. With this kind of cooperation, sport is always the winner and it really is one of the best tools to break down barriers.

“The exemplary behaviour of both sets of Irish fans has been heartening against the background of hooliganism in Marseille and Lille.

“Furthermore, the tribute paid by fans at the game against Sweden following the tragic death of Ballymena man, Darren Rodgers, was not just fitting but very moving, and it shows how far both sets of fans from across communities have come since the dark days of the Troubles. Days when my father and his friends were afraid to cheer Gerry Armstrong’s goal against Spain at the 1982 World

Cup in a Dublin pub for fear of abuse, or when Republic fans dreaded the sectarian chants from sections of Windsor Park are long gone.”

According to Senator Richmond, the idea of an all-Ireland football team was raised in the last Seanad by Senator Catherine Noone and former Senator Paul Bradford.

“With a new Government now in place, I ask Minister Ross, a keen football fan himself, to engage on this matter with Northern Ireland Assembly Minister Carál Ní Chuilín and the CEOs of both Football Associations,” Senator Richmond added.

“Such a move would build on the progress of the Setanta

Cup and follow the example of the GAA’s International Rules team and the Irish rugby, hockey, cricket and table tennis teams among others. This is a real opportunity for the island of Ireland to fulfil its true potential in the beautiful game and indeed any other sport where separate teams still exist.”

Tennis club nets brand new centreNeil Fetherstonhaugh

IT WAS game, set and match for Shankill Tennis Club as they cel-ebrated the opening of a €1.5m three-court indoor tennis cen-tre last week.

The state-of-the-art facility has been built alongside the club’s ex-isting seven outdoor courts and clubhouse at Quinn’s Road.

The new indoor centre will not only be enjoyed by the club’s 650 members, schools and the general public but also provides enhanced facilities for wheelchair tennis and blind/vision impaired players.

Covering an area of 2,200sqm, the new indoor courts feature cushioned acrylic surfaces which provide international-standard playing standards such as those found at the Australian Open and the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in London.

The project was financed by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and Shankill Tennis Club with support from the Depart-ment of Transport, Tourism and Sport through the Sports Capital Grants Programme.

“We’ve always striven to create access to tennis through low mem-bership fees and the pay-and-play system to players of all ages and all parts of our community,” said Cathy Grehan, Chairperson of Shankill Tennis Club.

“We can now create access to tennis in the best possible facility – a great environment for learning

The outgoing cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Cllr Barry Saul, is pictured with John Treacy of Irish Sports Council, Deputy Maria Bailey, Liam O’Donohoe of Shankill Tennis Club, Deputy Mary Mitchell O’Connor and Cathy Grehan, Chairperson, Shankill Tennis Club. and playing tennis at all levels.”While the club is membership

based, it is a community club and courts are available for members of the public who wish to partici-pate under the pay and play sys-tem.

Some 40 per cent of court time is accessible to the general public including all the group coaching at the club (juniors and seniors).

The club also has strong links with local schools and offers op-portunities for players with dis-abilities to learn and play the sport.

Currently, this includes 30 play-ers with an intellectual disability while the new centre will also fea-ture blind tennis and wheelchair tennis.

The official opening was also

attended by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, Deputy Mary Bailey and the outgoing cathao-irleach of Dun Laoghaire Rath-down County Council, Cllr Barry Saul.

Tim Carey, Senior Parks Su-perintendent, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, said the centre was a prime example of what can be achieved when the local authority and the com-munity “share an ambition and combine their resources, and ex-pertise, to realise it”.

Shankill Tennis Club celebrates its 30th birthday this year and has a reputation for being a com-munity club creating access to tennis in Shankill and the wider community.

AS THE gruelling Leaving Cer-tificate exams draw to a close, our hardworking stu-dents deserve a well-earned

break over the summer months.

The sheer scale of material that candi-dates are expected to memorise for the exams is absolutely staggering. Whatever challenges our young people face in their future studies or careers, they are unlikely to be as daunting as this. That’s why, de-cades on, many Irish adults still report having anxiety dreams about the Leaving.

By now, many of our secondary school

graduates will have filled in their CAO forms and will be hoping to have secured enough points for the college course of their choice. And while third level educa-tion will mark another important chapter in their lives, it also will bring its own dif-ficulties and challenges.

Last week, the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) published some disturbing findings, revealing that 58.1 per cent of students miss meals to stay in college. The research was based on 870 responses to a national survey of students.

Worryingly, more than a third (38.7 per cent) of students said they went hungry to fund or stay in college, while 34.2 per cent go without heat to make ends meet. A further 25.4 per cent said they go to their students’ union, St Vincent de Paul or a food bank.

Quite rightly, USI has criticised recent suggestions to increase the registration fee by more than €1,000. It warned that the implications of this proposed increase include plunging students further into poverty, disabling social mobility and in-creasing the gap between the rich and the poor. A paper prepared by officials at the Department of Public Expenditure found that even such an increase would be insuf-ficient to bridge the funding gap in third level education.

USI president Kevin Donoghue said talk of increasing the registration fee beyond

€4,000 was a “ludicrous” proposal.“Any Government that proposes raising

costs in an area already crippled by cuts and high expenses is deluded and out of touch with the public,” he stated. “This suggested increase will deter young people from applying to college, which is already

unaffordable for so many.”The funding crisis in third level educa-

tion is at odds with what comes out of the mouths of our politicians. Every time there’s a jobs announcement, TDs and min-isters cite our highly educated workforce as a major factor in attracting foreign in-

vestment to these shores.Yet, according to USI research, many of

our students are going hungry or cold to achieve their educational goals. The State is the ultimate beneficiary of a well-edu-cated population. It’s time for a rethink on who pays for it.

After the pressure of the Leaving Certificate exams, students will be considering their third level options. PHOTO: BIGSTOCK▪

RDS prepares for horse showNeil Fetherstonhaugh

PREPARATIONS are continuing for the world famous Dublin Horse Show taking

place in the RDS this summer.

Now in its 143rd year, one of

the most prestigious and endur-ing events in the Irish equestrian calendar regularly attracts crowds of over 100,000 across the five days.

This year dates for the hotly an-ticipated 2016 event have changed with it now running from Wednes-day, July 20 to Sunday, July 24.

Lt Jennifer Larkin with her horse Tullybawn at the RDS during the launch of this year’s Dublin Horse Show. PHOTO: LEON FARRELL▪

This change of date from the traditional first week in August setting is to accommodate the many Olympic riders who will compete at the show, as well as in Rio just weeks later.

Testament to the collective love for a day out, the glamour and excitement of the horse show has been drawing an impressive crowd since its inception in 1868. Today, the Dublin Horse Show is recognised throughout the world as one of the most esteemed, and social, equestrian events in the

calendar and features over 1,500 superb horses.

The main draw of course is the sport of elite show-jumping itself, where some of the world’s finest riders go head to head for some of the most prestigious show jumping competitions on the in-ternational circuit, including the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup for the Aga Khan Trophy, the Landrover Puissance and the Longines Grand Prix.

Beyond the serious business of show-jumping, there’s plenty

more to entice the younger mem-bers of the family too. Attendees can look forward to pony club competitions, with some very young riders competing.

While the more serious of equestrian fanatics may struggle to leave the showground’s perim-eter, another world of wonder waits inside the RDS halls. From shopping to fashion exhibitors, socialising to family entertain-ment, and the best craft makers in Ireland, artisan food, tipples and music, this is an inclusive

event for everyone And that’s all before we get to

the show’s other hugely signifi-cant draw, the glamorous Dublin Horse Show Ladies Day.

Stalwart attendees are in for yet another unforgettable expe-rience and one that, for many, defines the height of the Irish summer. Newcomers will find the Dublin Horse Show to be a hugely entertaining, rich and absorbing event, and one that will attract them time and time again for many years to come.

This year dates for the hotly

anticipated 2016 event have changed with it now running from Wednesday, July 20 to Sunday, July 24.

Luxury ship docks in Dún LaoghaireA UNIQUE luxury ship that usu-ally sends its time exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and the Falkland Islands dropped in for a quick visit to Dún Laoghaire last week.

The newly refurbished Hebrid-ean Sky (formally the Sea Explor-er 1) cruise ship docked in Dún Laoghaire Harbour for its first visit last Friday week.

The boutique ship with 100 guests and 72 crew on board usu-ally spends part of its year navi-gating the extremes of the south-ern Atlantic Ocean.

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Com-pany said they were delighted to welcome the first of two calls from Noble Caledonian group this summer with the ship due to return in August.

A two-night Antarctic expedi-tion on board this luxury ship can cost up to €25,000 per person sharing in the luxury Shackleton Deck Hebridean Suite.

The ship was renovated earlier

in 2016 and now features all 59 suites facing outwards.

The MS Hebridean Sky is one of three flag ships and is sister vessel to the MS Caledonian Sky and MS Island Sky which visited the harbour in June 2015.

The 90.6m ship called to the historic Carlisle Pier after its re-cent refurbishment to accommo-date such visits. The ship arrived for a 13-hour visit before heading north to Portrush, Co Down.

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Mas-

ter Captain Simon Coate, said: “Dún Laoghaire Harbour Compa-ny works hard to secure luxury ships of this kind to the harbour. The unique aesthetics of this 200-year-old harbour means it is a sought after port of call.”

Man helped sell stolen car to reduce drug debt

which she suspended in full.Garda Paschal Carley told

Garrett McCormack BL, prose-cuting, that gardai were alerted by an official at Wicklow County Council about suspicions they had in relation to a VRC a man was attempting to use to regis-ter a car.

Gardai discovered this man and his brother had bought the car from Burke a few weeks ear-lier after seeing an advert on Done Deal. He had met Burke initially in Clondalkin and hag-gled about the price. The man wanted to see identification so

they arranged to meet again later.

Later that day they met at Car-rickmines and Burke produced a driver’s licence in a false name. The men took a photo of the driver’s licence and of Burke be-fore handing over the money.

The Garda investigation found the car had been stolen from Castleknock, it had a cloned chassis number and its registra-tion plate related to a car which was on a lot in Finglas.

Gardai were able to identify the photo of the man selling the car as Burke. He was arrested

and co-operated fully with gar-dai.

Burke told gardai that he had become involved in the offence to pay off a cocaine “drug debt” of between €8,000 - €10,000. He was to have €500 taken off for his role.

Mary Rose Gearty SC, defend-ing, said Burke had taken care of the main catalyst for this of-fence and no longer wants any-thing to do with drugs or his old associates. She said the father of two wishes to return to full time education and continue the road he is now on.

Fiona Ferguson

A MAN who became involved in selling on a stolen car in order to try and reduce his drug debt has been given a suspended sentence.

Karl Burke (27) was to have €500 taken off his cocaine debt for advertising the car on the Done Deal website and going through with the transaction.

Burke, of Oatfield Lawns, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to handling a stolen car and posses-

sion of a false Vehicle Registra-tion Certificate (VRC) at The Park Shopping Centre, Carrickmines, on October 30, 2014.

Judge Melanie Greally noted the man who had bought the car from Burke had endeavoured to protect himself by seeking proof of ownership but never-theless was now out of pocket by €8,000.

Judge Greally noted Burke was no longer using drugs, had a supportive family and was tak-ing concrete steps to improve his personal circumstances. She imposed a three-year sentence

The Garda investigation found the

Tony and Robbie Cooke enjoy a pint in Kennedy’s for Bloomsday. PHOTO: MAXWELLPHOTOGRAPHY.IE▪

Dublin steps back in time for BloomsdayWELL-KNOWN faces got into the spirit of Bloomsday last week as they arrived at Westland Roe’s historical pub, Kennedy’s, for a special breakfast.

Actors, musicians, politicians and visitors on their way to work all joined in the tradition, to recre-ate the summer morning chroni-cled by James Joyce in ‘Ulysses’ that is set in Dublin on June 16, 112 years ago.

Guests were served with the finest fare from the time while actors Ciarán McMahon and Mary Ryan performed comic scenes, songs and readings from Ulysses, with Rose Lawless Cabaret taking centre stage as Molly Bloom.

The performance included ex-cerpts from ‘Barney Kiernan’s pub’ and Molly Bloom’s soliloquy while looking at aspects of the novel in the light of the 1916 Rising.

Ms Cabaret said the Molly Bloom soliloquy is the glorious finale to James Joyce’s Ulysses, where Leopold Bloom’s wife, Molly, freely ruminates over her life, her lost child, her affair, her desires, her memories and her

marriage.“Her monologue breaks with

traditional syntax as there are no full stops or punctuation of any kind, but the language has its own poetic rhythm, revealed through the candid and dazzling profanity of the language,” Rose explained.

Brian O’Donohue, co-owner of Kennedy’s, said the pub is steeped in history and literary tradition.

“You can feel this as soon as you step through the doors,” he said.

“The pub started life back in 1850 as a grocery store where Os-car Wilde earned his first shilling.

“It has gone on to enjoy the custom of some of our great writ-

ers including Beckett and Joyce. “It is only fitting that we host this great commemoration of Joyce’s finest work here on Bloomsday in conjunction with our friends in Sweny’s.”

Sweny’s Pharmacy is situated on Westland Row across the road from Kennedy’s.

It is featured in Ulysses, and is described in sumptuous detail within the novel.

Today, Sweny’s is a registered charity and operates as a not for profit organisation without any significant sponsorship.

It is maintained by volunteers, dedicated to preserving the shop as it was in Joyce’s time.

Heavy traffic can also cause delays on Cemetery Mass days, Glasnevin Trust advises the use of carpooling and public transport if possible.

Glasnevin Trust will be fundraising again at this year’s Cemetery Masses. All funds collected at the Cemetery Masses in each cemetery will be shared with each parish church and with Glasnevin Trust to support the running of these masses, This program provides for the upkeep of each of the cemeteries to ensure that they can be enjoyed by many generations to come. Southsiders battle mental illness to succeed in businessEoin Lúc Ó Ceallaigh

TWO Southside men have start-ed their own company and pat-ented a number of products, despite simultaneously bat-tling mental illness.

Anthony Doyle, of Blackrock, and David Doherty, of Booter-stown, are the driving force be-hind DNA Concept Design and both have suffered with mental health issues for a number of years.

The innovative men, along with Professor Anthony Robinson in Trinity College, have developed an insulation material that is be-ing used in a number of different ways, from keeping the water in a kettle hot to saving money on heating costs.

One of the products that the pair have developed combats heat loss through the wall of a house, and they claim it can save up to 35 per cent on energy bills.

The ‘Heathug’ is an insulating material that fits down behind a radiator, to keep the heat from escaping through the wall.

The lads have also designed an innovative kettle, that actually

retains heat.As Anthony, the “creative” one

of the pair, explained: “We are also bringing out another prod-uct in the next month, a kettle that if you boiled it at 8am in the morning, and then came back for another cup of tea at 10am the water in the kettle would still be hot.

“This kettle saves massively on electricity as it only needs to be boiled once in order to have several cups of tea.”

The lads are hoping that their company will generate enough profits so they can put money back into the Acorn Innovation Centre, another one of their ven-tures.

The Acorn Innovation Centre provides mentally ill people with support and funding to get busi-ness concepts off the ground.

Anthony said that they spent a long time trying to secure sup-port.

“It’s terrible the way men-tally ill people are treated in this country,” he said. “The most im-portant thing you can give some-body in this life is purpose. Take away that purpose and they’re just a shell.”

The men have struggled with their mental health for a num-ber of years. Anthony has been a manic depressive while David Doherty suffers from a condi-tion known as hypomania, which is brought on due to high stress levels.

The men are now leading

the way for people with mental health problems and are involved in the Troy Social Club in Dalkey, which provides a relaxing envi-ronment for people with mental health issues.

They are currently looking for investors and can be contacted on 0877736639.

Digital devices could change flight service FINDINGS from a survey

published last week has revealed that airline passengers are

increasingly switching to using their own electronic devices during flights.

The report carried out by air transport IT and communications specialists, SITAONAIR, found that while passengers are enjoying their inflight entertainment experience, they’re becoming more likely to do so on their smartphones or tablet devices.

A trend for a second screen is also emerging, with 10 per cent of passengers who took part in the survey switching between their own devices and seat-back screens during their flights.

And it’s good news for passenger experience – with 92 per cent of the total passengers polled being positive about their experience with content on-board.

Looking to the future, 65 per cent of passengers would prefer to access entertainment via their own devices – and SITAONAIR says that provides a real opportunity for airlines to increase connectivity with passengers through their own devices.

Airlines have always looked at ways to keep passengers entertained during flights. In fact the first inflight movie was shown on Aeromarine Airways way back in 1921.

More passengers are now using their own devices for in-flight entertainment.▪

Business award for Tour America

THE Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) has congratulated Tour America on being awarded Deloitte’s Best Managed Company Award for the seventh consecutive year.

The US tour operator accepted the prestigious award at the Deloitte 2016 Best Managed Companies Awards Ceremony, held last month in Dublin’s Convention Centre.

Tour America was founded over 20 years ago by Managing Director Mary McKenna and has been a member of the ITAA for many years. The company was awarded a Platinum Award after receiving the Best Managed status for seven consecutive years.

“I am so proud of our business for achieving such a high accolade,” McKenna said.

“This achievement is a direct result of our business culture, and team focus on always getting it right for our customers, and our constant aspiration to be the best and different at what we do.”

Cormac Meehan, President of the ITAA congratulated McKenna and her Tour America team on winning the award.

“Tour America has been a member of the ITAA for many years and we are delighted that their hard work has been recognised,” he added.

The Deloitte Best Managed Companies programme, in association with Barclays Bank Ireland, promotes and recognises excellence in Irish owned and managed companies.

It is the only scheme in Ireland that considers business performance from every perspective and entrants compete for awards through a rigorous and independent process that evaluates the calibre of their management abilities and practices.

However, the explosion of interest in personal devices since the launch of the iPhone in 2007 is pushing airlines to move forward with their inflight connectivity projects.

It’s taken some time for airlines to catch up with the trend, but some now allow phone calls and Wi-Fi for passengers is being rolled out

Some airlines are even providing their own in-flight entertainment apps that can be downloaded pre-flight and enjoyed during the trip.

SITAONAIR say 75 per cent of airlines are now planning to invest in inflight Wi-Fi services for passengers, which is good news for the 86 per cent of passengers now using their own devices on board.

It’s a major game changer for

the airline industry. Seat-back screens add both weight and cost to an aircraft fit. Indeed, some national carriers have even begun to remove seat-back screens from some of their fleets.

Inflight connectivity also improves the potential for a more tailored passenger experience.

It means passengers can interact directly with an airline social media team and information can be passed to cabin crew, who can then respond accordingly – whether that’s offering a service or solving a problem.

This joined-up thinking also carries through to building brand loyalty through tailored offers made to passengers based on their online behaviour.

And passenger safety can also be improved with reports of

potential turbulence alerts being sent straight through to personal devices.

“This understanding of what will be relevant to a specific passenger at a specific time, will ultimately deliver a more relaxing and enjoyable experience during the flight and build brand loyalty,” a spokesperson for SITAONAIR says. “Passengers bringing their own devices is a key enabler, so it’s great to see both its rise and acceptance.”

SITAONAIR believe the next phase for airlines is to develop innovative apps and communication channels, such as the company’s CrewTab that allows cabin crew with tablets to differentiate the passenger experience, enabling more choice and personal, interactive connections.

Cyclists cross country for ConsoleCYCLISTS from across the Southside took their place among the 250 riders who joined celebrity chef Derry Clarke on a one-day cross country mission on Saturday, June 11 to highlight Console’s fight against suicide.

The 200-kilometre Console East-West cycle from Celbridge to Galway is designed to raise funds and awareness for the na-tional suicide prevention char-ity, particularly Console’s free 24/7 helpline 1800247247.

Clarke, who has previously cy-cled from Paris to Nice for Con-sole, said the charity’s members and supporters are the unsung

heroes in the battle against sui-cide in Ireland.

“Console are at the forefront of helping people in Ireland deal with suicidal crisis, and families coping with the aftermath of a bereavement through suicide,” said Clarke, who helped to re-lease symbolic doves before the dawn cavalcade departed.

“They are fantastic, profes-sional people and every cent raised from this cycle goes to ensuring that Console’s services are free and readily accessible, so people can get help when they need it most.”

Console CEO Paul Kelly and the organisation’s support crew cheered the cyclists through

four stops along the way at Kin-negad, Moate, Ballinasloe and Loughrea.

“Each year we have to raise around €1 million so we were delighted that supporters came out to cheer our intrepid cy-clists at our stopovers and per-haps made a contribution to the cause,” said Mr Kelly.

“We are now asking the public to show their support by texting ‘Eastwest’ to 50300 to donate €4 to Console.

“At our rest stops we handed out Console 1800247247 wrist-bands and other information so people are aware that hope and help are always available from Console.”

Border Collies and Collie crosses as petsBOrDer Collies have been around for

a long time, originally as working dogs assisting shepherds around the Scottish borders.

They’re intelligent, active and loyal – but they’re not for everyone. If you’re fit and have an active lifestyle, plenty of time and want a dog to keep you challenged, a Collie may be the perfect dog for you!

There is no such thing as an ‘average’ Border Collie. The most familiar type is the classic black and white ‘sheepdog’ – though there are also many colour variations, such as blue or red merles who sport a fetching ‘dappled’ colour on their coats.

The main thing you’ll notice about a Border Collie is how athletic they are. Their physique and stamina lend themselves to being active a lot of the time and they usually excel at physical activities such as agility and flyball.

It is best to think long and hard about your lifestyle and whether or not it is suited to taking on such an active dog before getting one.

YOu SHOulD CONSiDer:• Your current lifestyle – you need to have

an energetic lifestyle to keep these lovely dogs happy.

• Your family situation – because they’re naturally high-spirited, they’re often not ideal in homes with very young children, there are of course exceptions to this and many make fantastic family pets!

• Collies love the outdoor life, so if you have a large garden or public spaces nearby that they can run around in (providing your dog has excellent recall), you could make a great Collie home.

• How much time do you have to devote to your new dog? As they need so much exercise and mental stimulation, Collies aren’t the ideal breed for people who are out for long periods throughout the day. They get bored easily and need to be kept motivated and entertained. Otherwise they can get into mischief!

• Training – because they’re intelligent, Collies are often easy to train – but they always want new things to do and like solving problems. Teach them new tricks and they’ll respond!

Choosing to get a dog is a very big decision, whatever breed you want to get. There are often Collies looking for homes in rescue organisations.

Remember that Collies can find kennel life stressful, so they may appear a bit boisterous

Choosing your destination and accommodationYou must make absolutely sure that your vision of a dream holiday is compatible with a dog’s needs. If your idea of heaven is lounging on a sunny beach in the Caribbean, then Rover is probably better off staying with friends or in a nice kennel. But if you do want to take your dog, you don’t necessarily have to miss out on a beach holiday: for example, Holland and Belgium are both very popular destinations among dog owners. Entry regulations and requirementsWhen travelling in the EU, Your pet must be chipped and vaccinated for your trip abroad, and will also need an EU pet passport. It is essential that you also read up on the entry requirements for the country you intend to visit. Owners of breeds such as American Staffordshire Terriers, Pit Bulls etc. will have an especially hard time as many countries – including France and Denmark – forbid even temporary entry of certain breeds.

I was surprised to hear that Leona Lewis has been dropped by her latest record label after just one album.

Leona signed with Island Records after deciding to move away from Simon Cowell’s company Syco.

Her former record group are apparently going to hold a meet-ing to try and keep Leona on board in some way - but right now she’s said to be concentrating on her upcoming role in ‘Cats’ on Broadway.

Considering how talented she is I’d say she will get picked up by another label again in no time.

Catherine Zeta-Jones stars as a glamorous journalist in the ‘Dad’s Army’ film, which is based on the classic TV comedy of the same name.

The cast also includes Toby Jones, Tom Courtenay and The Inbetweeners’ Blake Harrison, among others. It’s out on DVD and Blu-ray now.

Catherine said she had a blast filming it.

Cheryl’s been slammed by fans for dressing down for the wedding of boyfriend Liam Payne’s sister’s recently.

The star wore a plain baggy grey number with minimal makeup at the ceremony with speculation suggesting she didn’t want to upstage the bride.

Meanwhile, Liam was dressed in a three-piece suit which matched the wedding party. I personally though that grey dress she wore was awful! There are other ways of dressing down Cheryl!

The End is nearing for Black SabbathIT STARTED nearly five decades ago with a crack of thunder, a distant bell ringing and then that monstrous riff that shook the earth. It was the heaviest rock sound ever heard.

In that moment Heavy Metal was born, created by a young band from Birmingham barely out of their teens.

Now it has come to an end, with the final eight shows by the greatest metal band of all time, Black Sabbath featuring Ozzy Os-bourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, who are returning home to close the final chapter in the final volume of their incredible story.

Their farewell tour, ‘The End’, is currently wowing fans all over Europe, surpassing all previous tours with their most mesmeriz-ing production ever.

The Homemaker’s SchemeQuestion

I’m going to take some time off work to look after my children. What effect will this have on

my contributions for the State pension?

Answer

Under the Homemaker’s Scheme, time you spend out of the workforce caring for children or a person with a disability can be disregarded when calculating your entitlement for a State Pension (Contributory).

The scheme came into effect on April 6, 1994 (time spent homemaking before this is not taken into account).

You do not get credits for years spent out of the workforce. Instead these years will be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory).

However, you may get credits

for the remainder of the year you leave the workforce, and for part of the year when you re-join the workforce.

A homemaker, for the purposes of the Homemaker’s Scheme, is a man or woman who provides full-time care for a child under the age of 12 or an ill or disabled person aged 12 or over.

A homemaking year is a year in which you are out of the workforce for the full tax year. Up to a maximum of 20 homemaking years can be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory).

To qualify for a State Pension (Contributory) you must have a minimum yearly average number of contributions from when you entered social insurance to pension age.

The Homemaker’s scheme provides that full contribution years spent caring in the home are disregarded in calculating a person’s yearly average number

of contributions. Take, for example, a woman

who started work in 1985, took 10 years out of work to care for children from 1995 to 2005 and then returned to work for another 20 years before retiring in 2025 and applying for a State Pension.

Her yearly average would be calculated over 30 years instead of 40 years when the 10 years spent in the home are disregarded.

Tougher regulations are being demanded on children’s healthLAST week the Irish Heart Foundation launched a ground-breaking new report expos-ing the hidden tactics being used to target children online through digital marketing of unhealthy foods.

The study, titled Who’s Feed-ing The Kids Online, led by child psychologist and researcher Dr Mimi Tatlow-Golden, reveals the sophisticated digital marketing techniques directed at children by the top food and beverage brands and how little parents know about the efforts being made to influence their children.

Its findings are already being examined by the World Health Organisation.

Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) Head of Advocacy, Chris Macey said: “Social media platforms could take action immediately to stop marketing unhealthy food to children in line with Ireland’s existing broadcast media regula-tions.

“The very nature of targeted online marketing means that social media companies could

instantly change their advert set-tings to stop this advertising to under-18s.”

The report recommends that existing regulations protecting children from unhealthy adver-

tising should be extended to all media, that existing loopholes in regulations should be closed, and that celebrities should be banned from promoting products that are high in fat, salt and sugar.

New regulations to restrict digital marketing of unhealthy foods to children are being demanded. ▪

Leah and Georgina Mullett. Molly Geoghegan and Brendan Keenan, who have the genetic condition, were also in atten-dance.

Haemochromatosis is a ge-netic disorder where the body absorbs excessive iron from the diet and stores it in the body.

The IHA is encouraging people who are suffering from symptoms such as chronic fa-tigue, joint pain, diabetes, ir-regular heartbeat, enlarged liver and loss of sex drive to consult their GP.

A simple blood test to check your iron status can confirm or rule out iron overload. The ac-cumulated iron affects the liv-er, heart, pancreas, endocrine glands and joints, leading to impaired function of these or-gans and eventually to disease and organ failure.

A campaign to reduce the numbers of people suffering unnecessarily from Haemo-chromatosis was launched by Irish champion jockey, Ruby Walsh, at the Irish National

Stud, County Kildare with dual champion hurdle winner ‘Hur-ricane Fly’. Also at the launch was Margaret Mullett, Chair-person of Irish Haemochroma-tosis Association with Sophie,

As many as one in 83 Irish people are predisposed to iron overload while one in five are carriers of the gene.

The treatment is simple and effective. It involves the re-moval of blood and is similar to blood donation.

Professor Suzanne Norris, Consultant in Hepatology and Gastroenterology at St James’s Hospital, said ill-health from Haemochromatosis and the development of serious com-plications such as cirrhosis can be prevented by simple treat-ment.

Life expectancy in treated non-cirrhotic patients is nor-mal.

The IHA said early diagnosis is therefore critical and “Hae-mochromatosis is an ideal con-dition to consider for popula-tion screening in Ireland”.

Dedicated onlineresource for carersThe HSE launched a dedicated site for carers on its website (www.hse.ie/carers) to co-incide with National Carers’ Week which took place from June 13-19.

The site acts as a ‘one stop’ shop for carers, providing in-formation, signposting them to relevant services across the HSE website and, providing links to statutory and voluntary organi-sations who support carers.

The site also offers practical tips for carers on looking after their own health and wellbeing.

The information on the site was developed by the HSE’s Na-tional Carer Strategy Group, in consultation with Family Carers Ireland, the Care Alliance, and HSE staff, while a number of car-ers reviewed the content and provided positive feedback.

The National Carer Strategy Group was established to prog-ress a number of actions in the National Carers’ Strategy.

The most recent Census of Population defines a ‘carer’ as someone who provides regular, unpaid personal help for a friend or family member with a long-term illness, health problem or disability (including problems which are due to old age). Per-sonal help includes assistance with basic tasks such as feeding and dressing.

The 2011 census identified 187,112 carers in Ireland of which about two thirds are female. Care is provided mostly to a family member (98 per cent) and most often by their spouse/partner.

Brenda Hannon, HSE Specialist in Older Persons’ Services, said the HSE recognised the gap in in-formation available to carers on its site.

“Acknowledging the valuable contribution of carers in support-ing their family members, rela-tives and friends, we have devel-oped the site to support carers’ information needs,” she said.

“We hope that it will be a use-ful signposting service for carers who need information about HSE services such as home support, respite, financial benefits, Medi-cal Card, Carers’ Allowance, Car-ers’ Support Grant and voluntary organisations that can provide support to them or their loved ones as well as some informa-tion and tips about how to care for themselves. We want to thank everyone for their input into the site.”

The importance of a colourful dietKarla Bohan

EACH type of food provides us with different nutrients. Having a colourful diet by choosing a variety of foods is healthier than eat-ing the same all the time.

Colourful meals are also more visually appetizing, making our choices more interesting.

Red foods like tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries and apples contain lycopene, which is also a free radical-fighting an-tioxidant.

Orange and yellow foods are rich in beta-carotene, which con-tributes to good vision, a healthy skin, and a strong immune sys-tem. These are great reasons to include oranges, grapefruit, mango, tangerines, pumpkin and carrots into your meals.

Green foods like broccoli, spin-ach, kale, kiwi, lettuce and cab-bage are among the best addi-

tions to your diet as these contain cancer-preventing substances like sulforaphane and isothiocya-nate. They are also rich in iron, folic acid, calcium, and vitamins K, A, and C.

Blue and purple foods such as grapes, plums and blueberries contain powerful antioxidants that reduce the risk of cardiovas-cular disease and stroke, not to mention their potent anti-ageing properties.

White foods such as onions, garlic, mushrooms and cauli-flower are rich in potassium and allicin, important for blood pres-sure regulation and fighting off infection.

Last but not least, brown foods are rich in B vitamins, iron, and fibre. These include whole grains, nuts, beans and lentils.

Aim for at least one food of each colour per day to maintain good health and prevent disease.

The sinus cavities are in direct communication with the nasal airways;therefore what affects one may affect the other.

there are four groups of sinuses: A. Frontal - Paired, in frontal bone. B. Maxillary - Paired, in maxilla. Related to tooth-bearing area of maxilla. C. Ethmoid - D. Sphenoid - paired in the sphenoid bone. The bones of the face and skull have small but definite movement. These movements are essential for good function anddrainage of the sinuses. If there is restriction in these movements then sinuses can become blocked by the fluid they produce, and or dust particles, etc. Anyone who has had a sinus headache knows how thisfeels. The sinus drainage also involves structures in the throat, the upperribs and the upper part of the chest. Again freedom of movement here isvital for the integrity of the sinuses. Traumas to any or all of the abovestructures may cause impairment or lack of function to the sinus pumpsand drainage mechanisms. Osteopathic treatment with regards toblocked or inflamed sinuses is very gentle and soothing. It involves insuring mobility of the structures involved in sinus drainage, and gentlemovements to the bones surrounding the sinuses. In cases where there isno permanent damage to the sinus mechanism osteopathic treatmentcan be very successful.

This exciting event featured the work of the college’s talented young designers, with Irish de-signed and made graduate col-lections including womenswear, menswear, knitwear, bridal and accessories.

The exhibition, located in the beautiful Victorian Banquet Hall at the college, was attended by industry and media. Guests were

given a unique insight into the inspiration of the creative work of the BA Hons Degree in Fash-ion Design graduates, allowing the buyers and stylists to take a glimpse at the looks books and meet new talented Irish design-ers.

male Heatons customer. Student, Romy Blennerhassett, caught their eye and received a one-year paid internship at the Heatons Design Studio where she will work with the team of designers and buyers specialising in print design for their fashion ranges.

The Graduate Fashion Design exhibition is seen as a launch-pad for students’ careers with an impressive line-up of Internship Awards for the design graduates.

“Business skills are integral to our programme,” said Jane Leavey, Programme Director for Fashion Design.

“Live industry projects bring an opportunity to apply these skills, which is an important outcome for the student’s future career. We are also proud that many of our graduates secure employ-ment before graduating.”

At the event, graduate Sarah Murphy, winner of Kerry Fash-ion Week and DIT Fashion Shows 2016, was awarded an internship placement with Helen Cody.

Students involved in this year’s exhibition also included DIT Fash-ion Show Runner Up, Clodagh Knight and Dublin Fashion Young Designer of the Year 2015, Katie Donohoe, who was presented an Excellence in Tailoring by Louis Copeland.

The event was sponsored by The Style Club, which is one of Dublin’s premier hair salons, with four salons across the city offering talented, experienced and multi-award winning hair professionals at the very top of their game.

BIFE and IADT sign a progression agreement

IADT and Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE) have signed a formal Memorandum of

Understanding (MOU).

The objective of the MOU is to establish a substantive new collaboration between IADT and BIFE. This arrangement will evolve a partnership on the basis of equality and mutual benefit and a commitment to joint staff development and events.

Andrew Doyle, Minister for State was in attendance and welcomed the formal col-laboration between the two Institutions, saying that it reflected Government policy on collaborative partnerships and increased access to Higher Education.

BIFE students now have a commitment from IADT to progress onto their level 7 and 8 Degree programmes. Between 15-20 per cent of places on IADT courses will be reserved specifi-cally for further Education Insti-tutes like BIFE.

Local students get creative with diverse citizenship work

AN EXHIBITION of original artwork created by participants of a local Citizenship Through Art course was held in Dominic’s Community Centre in Tallaght earlier this month.

The exhibition was launched by Deputy Mayor, Deirdre O’Donovan, who paid tribute to the participants and their tutors for their hard work and creativity.

The innovative course was run by The DEBATE Project, Dublin & Dún Laoghaire ETB, to encourage locals to explore the meaning of citizenship, and express it through art.

Given the year that’s in it, a special focus was placed on events in 1916 and the men, women and children of that time. Two large wall hangings were created to commemorate the actions of a small group of Irish citizens in the name of independence, equality and

justice. A second artwork on display,

a large collage, was created by participants of a General Learning group in Tallaght Adult Education Centre, to draw attention to the diversity of citizenship in Ireland today.

DEBATE Project Co-ordinator, Melíosa Bracken, also paid tribute to the participants, their tutor, Rachel Veerman, and Dominic’s Community Centre Manager, Deirdre Cleary for their hard work and whole-hearted engagement with the course.

“I’d also like to thank Irish Aid and Dublin & Dun Laoghaire ETB for funding the initiative,” she added.

The primary focus of the Citizenship Through Art course was to engage people in reflecting on the kind of Ireland the 1916 leaders were fighting for and to explore whether that had been achieved in modern Ireland.

Red Cow Tyres keep you moo-ving this summer

MORE tread means more grip in the wet.

It’s as simple as that. Check your tread depth regularly, either with a dedicated tread gauge or using the built-in tread wear indicator on your tyres.

The legal requirement is that the tread grooves retain a certain minimum depth, when measured by a Tread Wear Indi-cator (TWI), located around the circumference of the tyre.

In European countries for summer passenger tyres, the figure is 1.6mm, while in several countries for certain winter models the reference is 4mm.

For new cars the car maker and tyre manufacturers work closely to select a make, size and tread pattern that suits the car. Styling, handling, noise and many other factors are taken into account.

When replacing your tyres you must stick to the same size, type and ideally brand and tread pattern too. This is likely

tyre safety

to be the tyre best suited to the car. Changing brand or pattern could result in increased noise or adversely affect cornering characteristics for example.

Check the car manual first as some vehicle manufacturers give specific advice on this. If there is no information in the manual, then it’s good practice for safety to fit the best/newest tyres on the rear. In wet condi-tions, this favours under steer rather than over steer. So if you

have the front tyres renewed it’s best to have the rear ones moved to the front and the new tyres fitted to the rear. We at Red Cow Tyres can offer a full range of new and part worn tyres in any of our five tyre centres. See our ad for all our locations.

Mercedes-Benz prepares for the arrival of the Cabriolet

Equipped with a high level of standard specifications, buyers can choose from an extensive list of options that includes addi-tional paint finishes, upholstery and trim variants and additional soft-top colours of dark brown, dark blue, dark red or black. Amongst these also is a Cab-riolet comfort package that includes AIRCAP, an elec-tric draught stop system, and AIRSCARF, neck-level heating for driver and front passenger - features that extend the open-top season whilst ensuring

that occupants enjoy maximum open-air comfort, even at low temperatures.

As one would expect in a car of this class, high-tech comfort ele-ments, safety systems and driver assistance features abound - in-cluding a roll over protection system specific to the Cabriolet – along with all of the con-nectivity and compat-ibility features m o d e r n

drivers demand. Standard are At-tention Assist to warn the driver against drowsiness and Collision Prevention Assist Plus to help prevent collisions by applying brake pressure.

Also available is a host of oth-er driver assistance features of

which DistrionicPplus, brake as-sist and active lane keeping as-sist are examples.

To boost carrying space, rear seats fold individually. The AMG line comes with special bum-pers and sills, 18-inch light alloy wheels and AMG body styling features.

Described by their sales man-ager in Ireland, Ciaran Allen, as “a strikingly sporty and visually eye-catching model, with a de-sign that oozes appeal from ev-ery curve and contour”, the new cabriolet is a car that is crafted for cruising.

Internationally, the new C-Class Cabriolet comes in five petrol, two diesel and one three-litre AMG versions, of four and six-cylinder design, all with ECO start/stop function and all Euro 6 emissions standard compliant, along with 4MATIC availability in some cases.

In Ireland, focus will fall ini-tially on the diesel powered C220d and C180 petrol models,

for which with prices will be an-nounced closer to their arrival.

Arguably, its most visual fea-ture is its electronically oper-ated open top roof that folds away into the trunk when open. Worked from a switch mounted on the central console, it can be opened/closed in just under 20 seconds, even at speeds up to 50 km/h. When open, boot space reduces from 360-litres to a still somewhat ample 285-litres.

Externally, its striking front end with inset star and diamond grille pattern, long bonnet, high beltline, LED high performance headlights, 17-inch wheels, and suspension set 15mm lower than the saloon are amongst its eye-

Summer camp at homeMANY families are still tightening their belts this summer, as the economy continues its slow climb out of recession.

Organise your own summer camp to keep the kids busy.▪

Bring the fun indoors when it’s rainy.▪

One of the victims of family cut-backs has been the traditional summer camps but you can still make sure your kids enjoy the school holiday break by staging a do-it-yourself holiday camp at home. Your DIY summer camp

can combine classic camp activi-ties and home-based fun to keep the little ‘uns busy and happy all season long. Whether you’re teaching them about the world by getting them involved in pre-paring a week’s worth of interna-tional cuisine, or drawing them into your latest kids’ playroom project, you’ll save money by keeping them at home. Here’s a few tips and activity ideas to help you stage the perfect DIY summer camp.

GEt ORGANISEDImagine the level of organisa-

tion and advanced planning re-quired to run an operation that serves up safe, creative fun to dozens of children each year. Now imagine how much easier your job

as DIY summer camp organiser will be if you have a game plan of activities that are both fun and educational to carry your kids through the summer. Start by cal-culating exactly how many hours each day, and how many days each month, you need to fill.

Older kids may benefit from a few hours of self-guided play each day, while younger children will need more of your help to keep their days full. Next, gather a list of all the activities you want to do this summer, grab a calendar or day planner and start planning when you will do each activity.

PICK YOUR PROjECtSKids love traditional summer

camps because they keep them occupied with fun activities in the company of other children. And parents love that kids keep busy with activities that are both fun

and educational. You can give kids the same experience by finding at-home projects that mix fun and education with practicality and usefulness. One great way to keep kids active, teach them valuable skills and get something done around the house is to involve them in your list of DIY projects.

Obvious chores, like mowing the lawn, likely won’t make the kids’ list of fun activities, but help-ing you plant a herb garden might. Or, let them take an active role in redecorating their own rooms.Help them choose paint, bedding and accessories or to install an easy-to-hang wallpaper mural.

Decorating their own rooms will teach kids important home im-provement and decorating skills - and could potentially keep them occupied for days. Other life skill-building activities could include:

• Encourage kids to research new cuisine, maybe from their pals’ countries of origin. Then plan and present a week of din-ners, with each meal hailing from a different country. Kids will learn cooking skills, interesting infor-mation about other cultures and the basics of grocery shopping on a budget.

• Planting a vegetable garden.Children learn horticulture and

how to choose and raise healthy food items.

• Doing some volunteer workEven the youngest tot can learn

to help others. Whether it’s just visiting a senior citizens’ center and playing games with the sen-iors, or helping serve at a food kitchen, volunteer work teaches children the importance of - and the satisfaction provided by - helping others. Keeping the kids at home doesn’t mean they - or you - have to give up the benefits of a camp-like experience. With a little creativity and plenty of plan-ning, you can recreate the best benefits of summer camp in your very own home.

Get the spare room in shapeIT’S all to easy to ignore the spare bedroom. After all, you never have to sleep there yourself but an uncomfortable night’s rest will leave a lasting impression on guests.

You can’t make your spare room into a penthouse at The Ritz but there are some things you can do to make it almost as comfortable.

As a rule of thumb you should provide a bed you’d be willing to sleep in yourself. An uncomfortable sofa bed or foam pad just won’t do it.

Invest some money in a good sleep surface and they’ll thank you for it in the morn-ing. A good pillow is like icing on the cake. It’s crucial that you provide crisp, clean, and coordinated linens for your overnight guests.

Always keep some spare sheets for the unexpected ar-rival. You don’t have to invest in the finest luxury linens to

make someone feel special. Most large stores have

large sections of discontin-ued styles of designer sheet sets and lovely imported tow-els.

You can really get a beau-tiful look at a small price. An electric blanket or fluffy down duvet will keep your guests cosy on the chilliest nights.

Be sure to have an ex-tra blanket tucked away in a closet should your guests need more warmth. You may not want to be entertain-ing your guest all the time they’re with you and it’s im-portant that they feel they have someplace to get away for a little private relaxing

time. A comfortable chair is just the answer.

Even a small slipper chair and stool will do the trick and your guest will have a quiet place to be on their own.

Have a bare tabletop, emp-ty drawer, and closet space available for your guest to put things away. They’ll feel more at home and not be concerned about having their things in your way.

A reading light is essential. Most people like to read for a while before going to sleep. Be sure to have good light that can be turned on and off without getting out of bed.Bedside flowers are another great idea.

You’ll find that if you have everything in order for your guest’s arrival and every-thing is ready the visit will be a happy one for both of you.

This eighteenth century house at Dollymount, called Thornhill was purchased by the brothers Arthur and Benjamin Guinness in 1835. It was renamed St. Anne’s probably from an ancient holy well on the estate. The house remained in the Guinness family. In 1880, Arthur Edward Guinness was made a peer and became Lord Ardilaun. He developed the house and estate and had a driveway lain which was one and a half miles long to the Howth Road. At the time of his death in 1904 the estate covered 460 acres. However, the house was vandalized during the 1960s and had to be demolished in 1968.
