BASSETS OFFERS HELP TO THE COMMUNITYBassets Sales & Lettings are looking for worthwhile community projects or activities to help fund or sponsor, within Salisbury, Amesbury, Fordingbridge and their surrounding villages. Although the budgets themselves are relatively small, Bassets would be delighted to hear from anyone about a local community related project or activity.

Here are a few examples of the support Bassets already shows to the community: they sponsor the Victoria Players and the Choral Society in Fordingbridge. In Salisbury, Bassets plays an active part in the Rotary Club of Salisbury sponsoring various school

activities and competitions as well as supporting the Riverbourne Community Farm as Founder Sponsors. And nally in Amesbury, they support charities such as the Dogs Trust and raise money at local events such as the Amesbury and Durrington Shows and the Great Amesbury Duck Race.

All three o ces support The Trussell Trust and Food Bank on an ongoing basis. You can also take a look at the Bassets’ Community facebook page for more examples.

Managing Director David Clayton explains: “Each o ce has a Community Budget which is to be spent speci cally on the

local communities within which we live and work. We are

inviting applications from any community

related group, who may need assistance during 2013”.

Please help Bassets to make a di erence

in your community by emailing Chloe at chloe.

[email protected] with information about the project or activity.

NEWS rest, saving you time, hassle and stress. You may not even need to empty your cupboards. We off er a no obligation free quotation and advisory service; you can see actual samples of the doors in the comfort of your own home. Give life to your old kitchen ‘Don’t replace it – reface it’ with Dream Doors Salisbury!

Bassets sponsors Great Amesbury Duck Race 2012Bassets’ support of the local community this year has continued with their involvement in the third “Great Amesbury Duck Race”. Bassets sponsored the second race for the medium sized ducks which they sold to local businesses and private individuals for £10 each.

The river was fast fl owing which led to the race fi nishing in record time with no ducks going astray.

The Winner, receiving a pair of Wessex Raceway Go-Karting tickets, was Chris Jolly of MU Law based in Warminster and Westbury, taking fi rst place with his duck, ‘Ducktagnan’. Second place was taken by Frank Thompson of the Rotary Club of Salisbury with his duck ‘Argyle’, who was delighted with his Scottish style Bassets Hamper. And fi nally, Richard Winder of local fi rm Moores Chartered Surveyors took third place

On your marks... get set... and the winning ducks! Chris Jolly & Richard Winder with their prizes

Frank Thompson with hisprize (and David Clayton

of Bassets)

Almost 4 million children…in the UK do not own a book, according to a report by the National Literacy Trust. The proportion of children without books is increasing, the charity said, it is now one in three as compared to one in ten in 2005. The study of 18,000 children suggested children with their own books were more likely to be above-average readers and do better at school.

In response to this announcement the Five Wishes Children’s Centre, Amesbury, and Bulford Children’s Centre have, with the support Wiltshire Council, extended their book lending scheme, so if your child does not own a book please call in and see us to borrow a variety of books.

For those who are “thinning out” their children’s books both Children’s Centres are very happy, and grateful, to accept donations of children’s books for 0-5 year olds to give to families.

Sharing books is a wonderful way to help your child learn to talk and it’s the ideal opportunity to share a cuddle at the same time! Find a quiet place, turn off the tv so there

are no distractions, talk about the pictures, give your child time to respond to chatter. Don’t pressure your child to name the pictures but praise if she/he does. Don’t read for too long as young children get bored quickly so little and often is best and remember you are not teaching your child to read, just sharing a book is a wonderful way to help your child’s language development.

Singing is another way to help your child learn about noise, sounds and words – this can be done anytime and anywhere!

Andrea Gray, Centres Co-ordinator, feels “sharing a book and a sing-song are special times spent with your child. It is our pleasure to lend books to families and the value of giving time to your child, encouraging them, and listening to them is an integral part of our groups.”

Should you wish to borrow a book please call into Five Wishes Children’s Centre, Kitchener Road, Amesbury SP4 7AX between 8am-5pm, telephone 01980 677218, or Bulford Children’s Centre, Hubert Hamilton Road, Bulford Camp SP4 9JY between 9am-3pm, telephone 01980 632660.

We are here to support parents/carers of 0-5 year olds.

with his duck, ‘Moore or less!’ - winning a case of wine.

Bassets raised £300 from their sponsorship which will go to a mixture of both local and national charities including Lucy’s Days Out, Amesbury Stroke Club, Amesbury Senior Citizens and BLESMA.

Rebecca Henderson, manager of the Amesbury Offi ce of Bassets said “I think it’s great that so many local businesses and people come together to help support such a worthy cause. It really was a “quacking” race!”

RECIPEMini Christmas Cakes

These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie

present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift

boxes.

INGREDIENTS

For the cake

• 250g butter, softened

• 250g dark muscovado sugar

• 4 medium eggs, beaten

• 350g plain fl our

• 2 tsp ground mixed spice

• ½ tsp ground cinnamon

• ½ tsp ground cloves

• Finely grated zest of 1 lemon

• 800g mixed dried fruit

• 100g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and

chopped• 100g chopped mixed nuts

For the decoration

• 750g marzipan

• Icing sugar, for dusting

• 4 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved

• Mixed coloured glace cherries, walnut

halves, Brazil nuts and chopped dried

apricots

METHODPreheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2.

Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm

square cake tin with a double thickness of

greased, greaseproof paper.

Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and

cream together until pale and fl uffy. Gradually

beat in the eggs. Sift together the fl our and

spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold

in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and

nuts and mix thoroughly.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin

and smooth the surface. Use the back of a

metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre

(this will help to give an even rise). Bake in a

preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until

fi rm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the

centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to

cool in the tin.

When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp

knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes.

Brush the sides of each cake with a little

apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces.

Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll

each piece out to a strip long enough to go

around each cake. Wrap the strips around the

cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top

each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and

apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.

Higgins Tree Care are a well trusted local business working

throughout Salisbury and the south west of England to conduct high quality tree surgery and hard landscaping services.

Despite the current fi nancial climate, they have continued to grow a thriving and successful business, upholding an excellent reputation with a large number of regular clients for several years.

Higgins Tree Care has looked at reducing unnecessary waste by recycling as much of the chippings and lumber as possible. As a result, all chippings are recycled into mulch, enabling gardeners to increase control of weeds and thereby reducing garden maintenance. Lumber is converted into fl ooring, fencing and seasoned hardwood logs ideal for wood burners, Agas and open fi res.

Justin told us that they have enough logs to hopefully last

until January/February but that obviously depends on demand and how cold our winter turns out to be. He warned “there are alot of homes in the SP4 area with open fi res and wood burners so we always advise residents to stock up early before the cold really sets in and supplies run low. The logs are our main priority at this time of year and come about from waste created from our tree work undertaken during the last 12 months. Like everyone else, we try to recycle wherever possible so it seems appropriate that we should make use of our own waste and use it for the benefi t of the community.”

Higgins Tree Care are fully insured and qualifi ed in arboriculture off ering both free advice and free no obligation quotes.

Top tips for

ChristmasDecorations

Choose a themeChoosing a theme brings unity to the overall look. It should suit your house and the way your family celebrates the festive season, whether laid-back and relaxed, sophisticated or formal. For some, that might mean a traditional, living fi r tree and a colour theme of red, green and gold. For others, a kitsch fake tree with fl uorescent ornaments; or perhaps a minimal, modern style with pure silver and glass.

Dress the treeStart by winding it with lights, making sure they’re evenly distributed. Next, drape your garlands, again aiming for evenness and an impression of generosity without overloading the tree. On small or slim trees, use slender garlands; on larger trees use heavier, fancier garlands. Last, hang your ornaments, with the largest fi rst, fi lling in around them with smaller ones. Place some nearer the trunk for a sense of depth and interest.

Hang a wreath For some, the making of a family wreath using foraged leaves, fl owers, seeds, nuts and fruit is a signifi cant part of the holiday season. Alternatively, ready-made examples are available in any style imaginable, from classic to contemporary, heart-shaped or circular, small or large, utterly simple or lavish and complex.

Make some decorationsHome-made Christmas decorations can be as elaborate or simple as you wish. Multi-coloured paper chains are the ultimate in family favourites, as are cutwork paper stars and clove-studded oranges. How about pom pom snowmen, peg-doll angels or glitter-covered pine cones? Or mini stocking shapes cut out of felt and ginger biscuits to hang from the tree? It’s all great fun and will create happy memories for years to come.

Wrap your presentsTransform present-wrapping from a chore to a pleasure by taking a little extra time and trouble. When they’re piled under the tree they will look so much better if they’re colour-coordinated and criss-crossed with ribbons and bows. Even brown paper or newsprint looks lovely

Have your festive decorations lost their sparkle? Katherine Sorrell has some ideas to bring back your home’s Christmas cheer

if adorned with a home-made label, while sequins, feathers, glitter, stamped designs and wired beads can all provide additional allure.

Sort out your cardsIt pays to establish a system as soon as the cards start arriving. Clear a shelf or two, and arrange them close together, large at the back and small at the front, in neat rows. Smaller cards can be tucked around a mirror or picture frame. An alternative is to staple them to ribbons (weighted by a bauble or pine cone) to hang in rows from a mantelpiece or along the side of the staircase.

Create displaysNothing says Christmas like poinsettias in pots, scented candles on the mantelpiece and ivy, holly and mistletoe draped over every available surface. Now’s the time to dig out that special table runner and your best crockery, glassware and cutlery for an eye-catching table display, fi nished off with a dish, tray or platter fi lled with greenery, candles and other festive decorations.

Looking after your treeBuy a tree that’s as fresh as possible. As soon as possible, cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, to help it absorb water. Trim away low-down or interior branches that you don’t need. Put the tree in a stand that can hold plenty of water, and never let it run out. Avoid standing the tree in a sunny window or near a radiator.

Winter is the hardest time of year for many living on the breadline. This Christmas, rising costs of food, fuel and static incomes will force local people into crisis where they cannot aff ord to eat. Thanks to the generosity of local people, Salisbury foodbank gives out nutritionally-balanced food parcels to people in crisis, feeding over 4,000 people last year. At Christmas, Salisbury foodbank also gives out hampers

fi lled with festive food to bring a little joy to people struggling to put food on the table.

Mandi, a local mother of two, said ‘I cried with joy when our foodbank Christmas hamper was delivered’. Despite being a working family, reduced hours and salary had left them unable to make ends meet as the additional costs of winter took their toll. ‘We had to choose

between paying for food, heating or rent’ says Mandi. ‘It’s so hard to tell your two young children that they can’t have any Christmas presents or a dinner like their friends... Salisbury foodbank made our Christmas, it was the best we’ve ever had.’

The Trussell Trust is asking the local community to help the foodbank spread a little joy to families facing hunger this Christmas…

Bauble Hunt, Craft & Gift Fair

Taking place over the fi rst two weekends in December, this is the fi rst time the Wilton Shopping Village have held an event like this around Christmas. The aim is to support and help raise funds for Naomi House who will take over one of the vacant retail units and sell table space to small businesses in order to create a Craft & Gift Arcade. The unit will also be decorated to give it a festive feel.

Children’s activities and entertainment will be organised including children’s biscuit decorating, Christmas card-making and tree decoration-making workshops on both Saturdays. On the Sundays there will be a Christmas Bauble Hunt around the shopping village, inviting children to participate with a visit to Father Christmas when they fi nish the treasure trail. There will be a small fee for the Bauble Hunt of £3 per child, but no admittance fee to the whole Christmas event.

Other attractions will be a tea-cup ride and a small children’s roundabout; live music with Jamie Eldridge (coach for EMinor Pop Academy) and the Wilton Youth Band. It is also hoped that Spire FM will attend.

Best friends Red and Major need a place to rest their paws Dogs Trust Salisbury Rehoming Appeal

Jo Blake, Supporter Relations Offi cer at Dogs Trust Salisbury, says:

“Red and Major are two Salukis who are looking for a home together as they are the best of friends. Red is 5 years old and likes the fi ner things in life - she genuinely believes she’s a lapdog, despite her size, and loves nothing more than a cuddle and a doze on her bed. Major is an 8 year old boy who is a bit more active, aff ectionate and enjoys running around outside, playing with his toys and convincing Red to go for walkies!

Red and Major would like an owner who is around most of the time as they really enjoy being around people and are very happy, aff ectionate dogs.

They are a lovely pair and would make a great addition to any lucky home.”

If you think you can off er Red and Major a new place to call home, then please visit Dogs Trust Salisbury at 45 Amesbury Road, Newton Tony, Wiltshire, SP4 0HW

or call them on 01980 629634 to arrange to meet this bubby lass.

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 18 Rehoming Centres nationwide and one in Dublin.

Tech Review

This doesn’t necessarily mean brightly coloured cases or novelty items that plug into

laptops’ USB ports, although of course there are plenty of those to choose from; novelty USB items are this decade’s equivalent of hilarious musical socks, and best avoided.

In many cases accessories can make gadgets even more useful. Take the Eye-Fi Connect memory card, for example: it’s a camera memory card with built-in Wi-Fi, so it turns any camera into a connected one for instant uploading. It’s not as expensive as you might expect - at the time of writing a 4GB Eye-Fi Connect X2 is £32.25 on Amazon - and it will genuinely delight any camera fan. Just make sure it’ll fit: Eye-Fi cards are designed to fit in SDHC slots, which you’ll find in most but not all modern cameras.

Another camera favourite is the Gorillapod, an innovative camera tripod that can hang on to almost anything. It’s available for everything from smartphones to enormous digital SLRs, and prices start at around £10. Unlike traditional tripods it doesn’t need to sit on the ground: you can wrap it around lampposts and tree branches, hang it from tables or put it on your head.

There are no shortage of useful accessories for iPads, and one of the best is Logitech’s Ultrathin Keyboard (around £75), which essentially turns an iPad into a small laptop. If you’d rather spend a little less, there are tablet styluses for writing notes and drawing for as little as £6.30 (Griffin’s Apple iPad Stylus),

rising to around £22 for the Pogo Sketch Pro. Such styluses work not just on iPads, but any touchscreen device including rival tablets and smartphones.

As you’ve probably noticed in the shop, Apple owners are particularly well served by accessories: you can’t wander round the supermarket without tripping over a pile of iPhone alarm

clocks and speaker docks. Such items make great presents, but be careful which ones you buy: with the arrival of the iPhone 5 in September, Apple dumped its existing dock connector in favour of a smaller connector called Lightning. Accessories designed for the iPhone 4 and earlier will still work, but they’ll need an expensive adapter for the iPhone 5, updated iPods and updated iPads - and in some cases the cost of the adapter may be more than the cost of the accessory. It’s definitely worth checking which version the person has before spending any money - advice that also applies to very useful multi-device chargers such as the Bluelounge Refresh (£69.99), which can charge multiple gadgets simultaneously.

If you’re still stuck for ideas, there’s always the famous answer to the present for someone who has everything: a box for them to put it all in. Rather than a box we’d recommend a bag, and we particularly like the Unit Portables bags (£59.99 from Muazo.co.uk): while they’re designed to accommodate gadgets, chargers and their accessories, they’re smart, stylish and available in a range of eye-catching colours.

What do you buy the person who hasEVERYTHING?Buying Christmas presents for gadget fans can be difficult, because they don’t tend to wait for special occasions to splash out - but before you reach for the stand-by option of perfume or socks, it’s worth thinking laterally. The answer to the question “what do you buy for the person who has everything?” is often “accessories”.

The Far Side Gallery 1 By Gary LarsonIf there’s any doubt that Gary Larson is some kind of comic genius, it was dispelled when they built a museum in San Francisco and filled it with his cartoons. Seeing the world through Larson’s eyes is viewing it through a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds the funny in the ordinary and I guarantee you’ll never look at cows and chickens in quite the same way again. The Far Side books can be passed from grandparents to parents to children and all will be equally tickled by Larson’s humour.

Simon’s Cat Vs. The World! Simon TofieldNot since Garfield has a cartoon cat so captured the nation’s heart. Simon’s cat spends his days terrorising and tormenting his long-suffering owner but this time, it’s the puss that’s under threat. With a new kitten on the scene, Simon’s Cat is facing a power-struggle of a magnitude he’s never known before. Forget fighting dead flies…this

time it’s war. Life-long cat fan Tofield has had years of feline experience, and it shows. The new cartoons are full of pure moggy magic.

The Best of “Punch” Cartoons. Helen Walasek, Prion Books Limited‘Punch’ magazine may have closed its doors in 2002 but its legendary status lives on. This is the biggest collection of Punch cartoons ever and it’s one to be savoured. It’s essential reading for all fans of humour and satire, with

no holds barred and nowhere safe to hide. The selection was made by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon

Library and it’s definitely to be treasured. With 600 of the best to flick through, you’d better avoid doing it in one sitting, or you might end up Punch drunk.

The Best of Matt 2012Matthew PritchettLooking back over the last twelve months, you would expect cartoons on the

Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee, the recession and everything else in-between. This multi award-winning cartoonist captures the

spirit of the nation in his own inimitable way. It’s a subtle mixture of wit and satire that will have you chuckling into your pudding.

His almost haphazard drawing style is quirky and suggestive, making you feel like he’s capturing British life on the fly. A brilliant way to look back over the year.

The Book of Bunny Suicides. Andy RileyPoor bunny. Here we are, taking pleasure in his impending pain. It sounds terribly fiendish and it’s definitely not for Peter Rabbit fans but Riley’s cartoons somehow manage to maintain a touch of innocence in the macabre. The premise is simple and yet Bunny’s plans to end his days become more and more elaborate and ingenious as the book goes on. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘not a happy bunny’. I guarantee that you’ll laugh out loud.

If you’re fed up with your Uncle Jack’s unfunny one-liners this Christmas, why not retreat to a quiet corner and find a bit of comic relief away from the relatives. From classic cats to depressed rabbits, we have enough Christmas cheer to keep you laughing well into the New Year.

Garfield Going for GoldJim Davis

Timed to coincide with London 2012, this special edition is one of the classic sports strips. He may have been around since the 70s but Davis’ furry anti-hero hasn’t grown out of taunting his owner with violence towards his canine counterpart, Odie and of laziness, gluttony, sarcasm and a hatred of Mondays. You gotta love a cat like that.
