Dear Readers,Where did the summer go! Since the last issue, I have celebrated my birthday, enjoyed a fantastic day at Salisbury Races and won a bottle of Baileys at The Dogs Trust Open Day in Newton Tony. The fact that my dog is called Bailey made the prize even more

appropriate but I did wonder whether I should have named him Mauritius! Our front cover superbly captures one of the dogs in action thanks to Helen Smith. Our main news this month though is that we have doubled the distribution of your favourite magazine. 8,000 homes in the SP4 area will now receive a copy - full details are given below. You can also view the magazine online each month on our website so you never need to miss an issue! Have a great September.

During the course of the school year you sort of become used to the fact that the hems of his trousers are gradually creeping further and further up his calf, that the toes of his trainers are getting lumpier and lumpier, that his midriff is no longer reliably covered by the ever-shortening tails of his school shirt.

But as the school holidays draw gratefully to a close you realise with a jolt that his uniform is no longer even decent, and that he needs a whole new set of schmutter. This is even more of a jolt if you have a daughter – you can’t send her back to school looking like a low-rent Britney Spears - and so September becomes the Month of the Ordeal of Shopping for School.

This used to be the one time of year when Good Old Woolie’s was indeed a Wonder. It sold not only the necessary clobber but also the new geometry set and calculator and ring-binders and all the other bits and pieces that seemed to need replacing every time they had to go back to school. Now I have found other shops that obligingly provide under one roof the same cornucopia of education-related items that Woolworth used to do, but the shock of the loss of Woolie’s jerked me out of my habituated take-it-for-granted complacency and I found myself becoming increasingly enraged by the need to source an entire suite of new stuff every year.

Nevertheless, kids grow; and as a parent you’re faced with two choices every time September comes round: either buy cheap stuff that may or may not last the year, or buy expensive stuff that they’re going to

September, and it’s back to school time. And it’s every September that we’re reminded of the brutal truth that children

grow.

grow out of well before it wears out. The former is the obvious choice and if, by the time July rolls round, they look like junior Worzel Gummidges – well, they won’t have to put up with it for long.

But something inside me says that the cheap stuff is lovingly hand-stitched by six-year-olds in Indonesian sweatshops for 10p a day plus a handful of rice on alternate Thursdays, and my conscience just won’t let me do it. So I go for the nice stuff, and drain the bitter cup of resentful fury at having to ditch perfectly good clobber every July and replace it in September.

Now, though, a new initiative is off the ground in my home town. It’s called BootXchange, and it’s a simple trade-in system: you hand in last year’s slightly worn but

still perfectly good high-end brand-name sports shoes plus a £5 administration fee, and in return you receive the hand-me-downs from the next generation up. They’ve only been worn once a week for 20 or 30 weeks and, being quality gear, they still have at least two seasons wear in them. Voila – new boots for a fi ver.

This is a good scheme and should be expanded to other school clothing. Actually, you can hand in the kids’ outgrown sweatshirts and stuff and they will indeed be passed on to the less well-off kids whose folks can’t afford new. At present there’s a stigma attached to second-hand clothes but now we’re all poor, our attitudes should change and we should see it as straightforward and indeed praiseworthy September thrift.

In fact I propose to take it a step further. Now I’ve reached a certain age I’m going to start a TrouserXchange scheme, where I can hand in my desperately-clinging-on-to-youth jeans and accept instead a couple of pairs of the high-waist cavalry twill slacks that are appropriate to my years.

Oh, and I’ll be exchanging all my Ben Sherman polo shirts for a drawer full of cardies.

The Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital has been ‘going’ for about 18 years, but in its present HQ for just ten. It is situated on its own 17 acre site in Newton Toney, 11 miles north east of Salisbury with a large barn, converted inside into aviaries, kennels and multi-functional pens. The aviaries are for birds that have come in injured or sick and after rehabilitation go into an aviary to practice their fl ying skills before release.

The pens house deer, badgers, foxes and swans. We never turn an animal away, so in the vivarium you might fi nd a snake or a toad!! Yes, we have looked after an amazing array of wild life.

Although the hedgehog is in decline - worryingly last winter we brought through 158 each requiring daily cleaning and feeding and quite often medication. Annually we deal with about 600.

We are a registered charity, always in dire need of funds, and also volunteers. If you would like to send a donation to Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital, Amesbury Road, Newton Toney, Salisbury, it will be very gratefully accepted.

If you could be a volunteer (ability to work hard, get dirty, and learn a new skill working with wildlife) please call the help line number 01980 629470.

The Department of Community Services and the Energy, Change and Opportunity (ECO) team has joined forces with all libraries in Wiltshire to fi nd a way to help householders

conserve energy and save money.

All Wiltshire libraries, including mobile libraries are lending free energy monitors to householders to help them keep an eye on their electricity use.

The energy monitors are available to borrow from libraries for up to three weeks - simply call, email or visit your local library today to see how you can take advantage of the scheme.

The device is easy to use and shows how much energy is being used in people’s homes. They instantly show the cost of switching on a light, turning on the TV or boiling a kettle.

Each monitor will be loaned with a booklet containing instructions, energy saving advice and information about grants, funding and useful contacts. Energy experts from the council will also be providing information at a number of advice events at libraries throughout late summer.

There are 200 monitors available to loan through the scheme and for more information you can call 01225 713727.

Rain doesn’t stop playat Dogs Trust Salisbury Open Day

Crowds fl ocked and tails wagged but no records were broken

Despite the showers, around 5000 dog lovers from across the South and South West supported Dogs Trust Salisbury’s Open Day on Sunday 7th August.

Many turned out especially for the Super Stay – an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest simultaneous dog stay. And although the record remained intact*, 463 dogs managing to sit or stay for 2 whole minutes is not an achievement to be sniffed at!

Leslie Gold, Supporter Relations Offi cer for Dogs Trust Salisbury says:

“We aimed high with the Super Stay but although we fell short, it was still quite a spectacle. During the record attempt everything stopped - it was so peaceful and seeing 463 dogs in perfect harmony was truly amazing.

“We also managed to raise a staggering £18,450, all

of which will go towards helping care for current and future canine residents of the rehoming centre. Dogs Trust receives no government funding so all donations are vital and we’re very grateful to each and every member of public – four legged and two - who supported our Open Day.”

Dogs Trust Salisbury hopes to make a new attempt to break the record at next year’s Open Day and Fun Dog Show.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant of £9600 to The Amesbury History Society to record and make available to local people and visitors alike the history and heritage of Amesbury and its surrounding area. The project’s focus will be to tell the story of the town of Amesbury through a DVD presentation that will look at its important role throughout history, in a landscape that is wonderfully rich and diverse. From its prehistoric origins right through to the modern era, the presentation will serve to tell the complete story of the town for the fi rst time. The story will start with Amesbury’s prehistoric beginnings, looking at Stonehenge and the Amesbury Archer, as well as prehistoric sites at Boscombe Down, Durrington Walls and Vespasian Camp. It will then work chronologically through the fi rst 1000 years AD with the birth of the town and its Saxon origins, then from 979 – 16th century, including the emergence of the Abbey and subsequent Priory. The 16th – 19th century will focus in particular on the Seymour and Queensbury family estates and the project will fi nish with the 1930’s and the establishment of the military,

including the story of the RAF at Boscombe Down and Amesbury at War, right through to the growth of modern Amesbury and how it stands today. Nerys Watts, Head of South West for the Heritage Lottery Fund said: “Amesbury’s location, adjacent to the World Heritage Sites of Stonehenge and Avebury gives it a unique place in the long history of Britain. This exciting project will provide the opportunity for the complete story of the town to be researched, recorded and made available for future generations to understand and enjoy” Anyone wishing to contribute to the project can contact Norman Parker on 01980 622087 or via email: [email protected].

“Geocaching is something I’ve done with my family for a few years locally and countrywide and is brilliant fun. While looking for caches, some of the things we have come across include a huge cave just 500m from our front-door, hidden coves leading to the sea and some amazing waterfalls. We also discovered a number of ruined castles and the ancient well of St Dyfnog at Llanrhaeadr along with its beautiful church – home to one of the most amazing stained glass windows in the UK.

Along with those great fi nds, we’ve seen wonderful examples of nature in all its glory – orchids, tadpoles, newts, lizards and wild strawberries are just some of the wonderful array of wildlife and fl owers we’ve come across near caches.

Knowing where to look for caches is really simple no matter where you are in the world. Once registered on the Geocaching website, you’ll get weekly emails telling you about caches within a 50-mile radius of your location and it’s not unusual for there to be several hundred newly hidden during the week.

There’s a whole host of fun events staged around cache-hunting too, like the timearound 60 cachers staged a fl ash-mob in the centre of Chester, put on silly hats and nattered loudly to each other for 15 minutes in-between two whistle blasts. It was particularly enjoyable because all the other people in the vicinity were completely bemused as to what was happening. My children thought this was absolutely wonderful!

Last month, we introduced you to Geocaching, its history and how to go about doing it. This month, we are going to share some Geocaching experiences from someone who has actually joined in the fun. Trevor lives in North Wales.

What’s great about Geocaching is that it’s so varied; there are lots of different types and sizes of caches to fi nd and many ways to fi nd them. There are drive-bys, which are perfect if you can’t walk too far, while others might be hidden at the summit of steep hills or alongside disused railway tracks. You never know who you might meet either: we once met three sprightly elderly ladies looking for the same caches as me and my family. At

the time we were up high on the Great Orme in Llandudno – we got chatting and they told us they had travelled

from Birmingham for a Line Dancing Competition and were Geocaching in their free-time.So as you can see, Geocaching’s a great

way to spend time with your family enjoying the great outdoors, come rain, shine or snow – yes, we’ve even been caching in the snow.”You don’t have to live in North Wales though to do Geocaching. It’s a world-wide initiative so it can be done on holiday as well as where you live. It’s worth buying a good-quality map or downloading one from the Ordnance Survey website for a small fee to help you become familiar with the terrain before you set out.

Well, it has certainly been an eventful summer. At the time of writing, the country is refl ecting on the fallout from the sickening riots and looting that gripped our city streets. I think it was the right call to bring MPs back to Westminster so that we could express the country’s disgust at the violent attacks on the property and livelihoods of so many innocent people and demonstrate our common resolve to deal with the perpetrators.

I have been thinking long and hard about the deeper causes. The opportunity to run rampage, steal and loot, destroy property and cause havoc and generate fear does not just happen overnight. The answer, for my money, is to be found in three interrelated causes.

Firstly, we need to think about the values imbued in our young people at school and throughout our society. The presumption for some young people is that the state owes them a living and that nothing is their fault. This attitude has arisen because we are too reluctant to objectively measure attainment and provide proper discipline in schools with absolute values behind them. With a backdrop of intermittent parenting children do not feel loved and cared for so they, in turn, don’t care about the implications of their behaviours on others.

Without challenging the “all must have prizes” culture - regardless of what the individual’s own input is - we will continue to see feral youths emerging from our schools poorly prepared for the real world.

Secondly, and closely related to the fi rst point, is the consistent denial of moral absolutes in our society. It is no longer politically correct to say that families need a strong father fi gure to give discipline and set an example and that we need to do everything we can to encourage stable families. Instead, as a political class, we have tip-toed around every sensitivity as we fall over ourselves to be inclusive and not make a moral judgement on anyone’s lifestyle.

I wonder, of all those who have been perpetrating the violence of recent days, how many have had a stable family life where their father was there at all times and actually cared about where their son or daughter was? I don’t agree with much of what the current US President says but when Barack Obama said, “What makes a man a man is not the ability to have child but to raise one” he was spot on. British society needs to think deeply about what social patterns we incentivise and encourage.

We should acknowledge the heroic work of many single parents who do provide a moral compass in the home. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that the drift we have seen in society, as the moral compass of our culture fl ips to the latest tide of sentiment, has consequences and pretty dire ones looking at the news in recent days.

Finally, we need to acknowledge that there has been a growing chasm developing between those in authority and society at large. My family tell the story of when my policeman grandfather walked down the street in uniform and kids stepped back to let him pass – mindful of his authority in the community.

What we need now is clear resolve and determination to once and for all face up to the deeper causes - to restore codes of discipline in our community, tackle the causes of family breakdown, and provide support for the police and teachers so they can do the job we want and need them to do.

Home phones don’t get the same attention as smartphones, but they’re often smarter buys: cutting-edge telephones won’t cost you several hundred pounds or tie you into a two-year contract that takes £40 per month from your bank account. So how do you choose the one that’s right for you?

Home is where the handset isThe fi rst thing to consider is how smart you want your home phone to be. Many manufacturers offer phones that can send SMS text messages, or have colour screens, or can use the Skype internet chat service, but unless you think you’re actually going to use those features then there isn’t much point in paying extra for them - and in the case of SMS messages, your mobile phone contract probably includes a bundle of free SMS messages, whereas ones you send from your home phone will cost money per text. With the exception of the very cheapest telephones, home phones these days tend to be cordless. Most systems have a main base station, which plugs into your telephone line, and any supplemental handsets then connect to that base station so you don’t need to run extension cables around your house or get BT to stick in new sockets. If you opt for an answering machine version, this will be built into the main base station. The key technology to look for in a cordless phone is DECT (pictured here), which is short for Digital Enhanced Cordless

Telecommunications. This ensures reasonable call quality and enables multiple handsets to share a single phone socket, but take manufacturers’ claims about handset range with an enormous pinch of salt: like wireless computer networks, those “100m range” claims are only achievable in ideal conditions where there aren’t walls, radiators and other obstacles to obstruct the signal. However, unlike earlier cordless phones, UK DECT devices shouldn’t interfere with or suffer interference from wireless networks, baby monitors and other wireless devices.

There are other issues to consider. Handsets with 150-name memories sound great, but if those numbers aren’t shared with your other handsets - something BT Stratus phones don’t

do - then that selling point soon becomes an annoyance. Watch out for answering machines

with tiny recording times, too: 5 minutes of recording sounds

reasonable, but a few wordy messages when

you’re on holiday will quickly fi ll all the available memory. Remember too that unlike

traditional corded phones, cordless models don’t work in the event of a power cut.Remember too that some services cost money, so for example Caller ID and Caller Display require you to sign up to a particular service, which

may incur an extra charge. Some phones

offer additional technologies, such as Voice over IP, or VoIP for short. This routes calls over

the internet, and the Skype internet calling

system is probably the most famous example of VoIP in action. Firms such as Gigaset do a nice line of Skype-compatible VoIP phones, but they need to be connected to your broadband line to make VoIP calls - and if you’ve got broadband, that probably means you’ve already got a Skype-capable computer, smartphone or tablet. When it comes to actually spending money, we’ve got two pieces of advice: look online for reviews and never pay the RRP. User reviews on retailers’ websites will tell you whether the speakerphone is actually audible and whether the LCD display is legible, and using price checking sites such as Kelkoo.co.uk soon demonstrates that discounts of nearly 50% are widely available on many models.

Postnatal IllnessBaby bluesAround 50-80% of new mums get the ‘baby blues’ when they feel, not surprisingly, exhausted, anxious and weepy during the fi rst few days after the birth. This usually disappears without the need for treatment about 10 days after the birth. Postnatal depression (PND)Around 10-15% of women will suffer more severe postnatal depression, sometimes weeks or months after the birth of their baby. About half of cases occur within the fi rst three months, and 75% of cases by six months. These mums experience more powerful and prolonged symptoms of depression such as:

• constant weepiness• anxiety, tension• diffi culty in bonding with the baby• loss of libido• sleep disturbances, restlessness• exhaustion• feeling isolated or living in a ‘bubble’• feelings of guilt and resentment

Many women do not realise they are suffering from postnatal depression and battle on without getting the help they need. It is often women who have high expectations of themselves and of motherhood that fi nd the reality of caring for a new baby hard to cope with.If you feel depressed, it’s important to let family and friends know how you feel so that you can get support. Your GP can discuss treatment options with you, such as counselling and anti-depressants and direct you to local mothers’ groups which can be of enormous support to new mums.Puerperal psychosisA very small percentage of women (between one and three in every 1,000), suffer from puerperal psychosis, which causes severe mental breakdown and may include symptoms such as manic behaviour and hallucinations. Treatment options include hospitalisation, drugs and counselling.Getting supportBeing at home with a new baby that seems to need constant feeding and changing, who takes all your attention and leaves you feeling exhausted, can be an isolating experience. Take up any offers of help and support from friends and family. If you feel you are not coping, always talk to your GP or health visitor.

Caring for your long-awaited baby should be the most wonderful experience, but for many mums, at some time in the fi rst few days, weeks or months, it simply is not.

It’s normal to feel emotional and exhausted after having a baby, but symptoms of PND include constant crying, feeling cut off from everyone else, an inability to sleep, feeling anxious and tense and unable to bond with your baby.

If you feel low or depressed, don’t try to cope on your own and don’t be afraid to ask for help – all new mums need the support of family and friends. Don’t put yourself under pressure to keep the house clean or prepare big meals – rest when your baby sleeps.

If you feel you are not coping, talk to your health visitor or GP – and don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed that you’re not handling motherhood as well as other mums seem to be. Talk to other mums – you’ll fi nd they’re probably feeling just as overwhelmed as you are.

Despite greater awareness of PND, it’s thought that only about half of mothers who need help are getting it. So don’t keep your feelings to yourself – the sooner you talk about it, the quicker you can get support and, if needed, treatment.

Charity bouquets raise funds

A fl oral designer from Salisbury has created a special fl ower bouquet collection to help raise much needed funds for six local charities and was launched formally at a reception at The Red Lion recently which was well attended by representatives from all the charities as well as local businesses.

The collection designed by Charlotte Mitchell, the owner of Floral Whispers, a fl oral design company based near Broad Chalke, is helping to raise funds for The Dogs Trust, ABF The Soldiers Charity, Lucy’s Days Out, Rainbow Rooms

LGBT UK as well as Stars Appeal and The Trussell Trust.

Each bouquet has been designed to represent the chosen charity and will appeal to those who wish to support the charity directly as well as send the fl owers simply because they love the design, with a charity donation being an added bonus. They are available in three different price brackets £40, £50 and £60 plus delivery with 10% being donated to the respective charity.

The idea was forged when Charlotte couldn’t decide which charity to support as a business.

“There are so many worthwhile causes to support…. as a business owner I felt a real responsibility to give back to the community and I felt this was a really unique, and creative way to offer support.”

The bouquets are available for delivery within a 10 mile radius of Salisbury at present but over the next few months will be launched for nationwide delivery.

For more information and to see pictures of all the designs, visit the Floral Whispers website at www.fl oral-whispers.com.
