During the upcoming AGM in May, we will share some of the plans on how we can bring the

profession to a higher level with our new vision and mission statements.

However, the best person to raise the profile of physiotherapists is yourself, through your daily

encounters with patients and their families. It is a tremendous role to play by touching their lives

and this is the most powerful message you can bring across to help raise our profession’s profile.

I would like to take this opportunity to rally all physiotherapists, especially our members, to take

on the ambassadorial spirit of representing your profession; you are the public face of our

profession and you can help us fly our flag. At the end of the day, we know we are good at what

we do, and proud of what we do, who we are. Let the public know that too.

Dear Members, Over the past few months, there has been a hot debate

in the public forum. No, I'm not talking about the

General Elections. SPA President came out strongly in

the papers to defend our profession in the national

papers. Shortly after, a fellow SPA member highlighted

a brochure from a wellness centre depicting us

unfavorably. Again, SPA stepped in to protect our

profession.

In this issue, I'll highlight these 2 cases where the

integrity of our profession is being challenged. SPA

should and will continue to be committed in

representing our profession and raising our profile.

Chiropractors are the only professionals who are trained specifically in the art and science of manipulation, which is why manipulative therapy should be left in our hands.” Robert Wasserman President, The Chiropractic Association (Singapore)

The above was part of a response given by Mr Wasserman to an article by Strait’s Times Senior writer Mr Andy Ho regarding the risks of chiropractic neck manipulation. The article can be found in our facebook page.

SPA president, Low Hsien Chih, has given his prompt reply to rebut The Chiropractic Association (Singapore), which was published the following day. SPA will continue to serve our profession by being the representative voice for physiotherapy in Singapore.

It is also heartening to know that SPA has received several emails from our members highlighting the above issue. We need the help of everyone to be our eyes and ears so that we can respond effectively to quell such notions and not let them perpetuate. Thank you members.

A member of SPA sent us this brochure which cast a negative light on physiotherapists.

SPA has responded sternly to this wellness centre demanding a retraction of their uncalled, defamatory statements. They have since edited their marketing materials to exclude these remarks.

Once again, we need our members to be vigilant; to keep us informed especially when the integrity of our profession is being undermined. SPA is in the best position to advocate for our profession and this is one of the main reasons for our existence.

There is a misconception that SPA will be obsolete when the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC) is set up. In fact, they are and should be seen as two separate entities.

The latter will be the governing board that regulates the professional conduct and ethics of registered physiotherapists. It also disciplines when the profession is misrepresented by a non-registered person. E.g. a gym instructor proclaiming to be a physiotherapist when he or she is not registered as such.

However, the AHPC do not advocate for the profession, or aims to raise the profile and status of physiotherapists. That is the responsibility of the association and that is why we need members to support our work.

If you feel a stir of emotions upon reading the text in the red box, you should support the association with your membership so that we can continue this journey to advocate for physiotherapy in Singapore.

48TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

WEBSITE REVAMP

SPA’s 48th AGM will be held on 25th May 2011, Wednesday at 6pm. The event will be held at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital Auditorium. Directions to KKH can be found in the following link http://www.kkh.com.sg/ContactUs/Pages/DirectionsToKKH.aspx Members can look forward to

plenty of exciting announcements including SPA’s new mission and vision to take us forward for the next 5 years. There will also be proposed amendments to the constitution that requires you to exercise your vote as a member. More information will be sent out soon by the Honorary

Secretary to update members on the agenda for the day. It is an exciting 5 years ahead, come down and hear our passionate council share their plans.

Our website is the virtual face of the association and by extension, our profession. The on-going revamp aims to engage stakeholders of our profession better by keeping our website relevant for our members and for members of public to learn more about our profession.

The new website will be unveiled during the 48th AGM. Some of the changes are highlighted below:

• The website will have a training calendar listing relevant courses from various institutions for physiotherapists to upgrade their clinical skills

• A discussion forum for members to exchange rehabilitation ideas, share clinical experiences and expertise from the respective Special Interest Groups, or even trade reference books

• Continous Professional Development Portal to log and keep track of their learning journey.

• Access to full-texted journals • “Find a Locum“ listing
