LOCAL SINGLES PREP FOR CHARITY BACHELOR/
BACHELORETTE AUCTION SARATOGA SPRINGS – Gateway House of Peace, a charitable hospice home located at 479 Rowland Street in Ballston Spa, awaits its anticipated March 1 opening. But before those doors will open, an equally anticipated event is creating buzz among local bachelors and bachelorettes who are ready for a charity auction that could land them a date with a dreamboat. On February 27 at 6 p.m. at The Paddock Lounge, 12 single guys and gals from the Capital Region will show up to walk the red carpet for a crowd, who will be ready to bid some dough. It’s all for the purpose of raising much-needed funds for Gateway House, with the potential added bo-nus of meeting a mate. Minimally, the highest bidder will receive a gift card to take their contestant out for some fun at one of several local busi-nesses that donated. A $10 donation at the door from attendees would be appreciated. This year’s auction emcees are Mark Mulholland of WNYT and Bo Goliber of Fingerpaint. Candidates include a Director of Business Operations, a producer, a business owner, a lawyer and a model, just to name a few. For the week leading up to the auction, folks can log on to Gateway’s Facebook page to get the scoop on the candidates. Even if attendees aren’t planning on bidding, donations will be accepted at the door, with all proceeds benefitting the cause. For more information on the auction or to make a donation to Gateway House of Peace, please visit www.gatewayhouseofpeace.org.

SARATOGA FILM FORUMSARATOGA SPRINGS - ALL IS LOST. Thurs., Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m.; Fri., Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Feb. 23, 3:00 p.m.Written and directed by J.C. Chan-dor • 106 min. • USA • 2013 • Rated PG-13 - star-ring Robert Redford as a man who must fight for
survival after being lost at sea. Somewhere in the Indian Ocean, the unnamed seaman wakes to find that water has flooded his boat, the Virginia Jean. Turns out that he has col-lided with an errant shipping container, which has ripped a hole in the hull. What then follows is eight days of one har-rowing adventure after another that includes storms, dam-aged navigational equipment, a dodgy raft, and, of course, sharks. Here’s the rub: Redford’s is the only character in the film—and he has practically no dialogue (the shooting script was 31 pages long). And yet, Redford turns in a bravura per-formance that will keep you entranced for every one of the film’s 106 minutes. If so, the Friends of the Kayaderosseras invites you to their annual meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3 at the Gideon Putnam Room in the State Administration Building in the Saratoga State Park. Guest speaker will be Doug Heller, a professional engineer who specializes in stream bank stabili-zation, natural stream design, stormwater management and site development. Doug, a project engineer at the LA Group in Saratoga Springs, designed several mitigation projects this past summer for the Kayaderosseras Creek, the major ones being along Creek Road and Route 29 west of Rock City Falls. Other highlights of the meeting include a discussion by Ma-ria Trabka, executive director of Saratoga PLAN (Preserving Land and Nature) of new natural resource maps produced by PLAN which will be posted and George Preston, Friends of the Kayaderosseras, who will show photos taken over several years at the same spot on the Kayaderosseras Creek docu-menting changes. Friends of the Kayaderosseras President John Battenfield will ask for suggestions and lead discussions on how FoK can better conserve, preserve and protect the creek. Officers to fulfill expired terms will also be nominated for an election. The annual “Cow” and “Silver Sword” awards will also be presented to members who have performed above and beyond the call of duty. Free refreshments and snacks will also be available at the meeting.
CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs pro-vide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to de-velop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empow-ering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly ba-sis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

Here in Upstate New York, gardening in the winter comes in the form of fantasy and anticipation. The gardening catalogs continue to arrive in the mailbox. Hours are spent reading about, circling, and ooh-ahhing over the varieties offered. This is the time of year when great plans are made. It’s easy to get carried away with all these tempting offerings. I’ve found that all these catalogs have another benefi t for the home gardener. They provide a wealth of infor-mation. It’s a great way for budding gardeners to get an idea of what types of plants they might like in their gardens. To try to sell you, catalogs must provide cultural information along with a sales pitch. This is a great way to get a feel for the growing requirements of different families of plants.
Once our seed packets have been procured, we need a plan for planting them. Many of them can be sown directly into the garden once the weather warms up. Around here, that means June. Considering how short the growing season here is, many of us will opt to start our seed indoors so we’ll be able to enjoy a longer show of fl owers or larger harvest of vegetables. But how...and when do we start our seeds? This information is almost always included on the packet that the seeds came in. For instance, a marigold pack might say:”For best results, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting date.” The beginner will say,”Yeah, well what day is that?” The average date of the last frost in much of Saratoga Co. is May 20th. In the city of Saratoga Springs it may be a week or more later. In Vischers Ferry it may be a bit earlier. Us-ing May 20th as our planting date and counting back, we fi nd that we should be starting our marigold seeds during the last week of March or the fi rst week of April.
Considering the great variety of seeds available, it would be impossible to cover all aspects of seed starting in this small space, but I would like to address some of the key concerns.
Always use sterile soil. Soil from outdoors or bagged topsoil is not appropriate for seed starting. The best choice is a light, sterile seed starting mix made from milled sphagnum with vermiculite added. Experienced gardeners will even add a light layer of very fi ne milled sphagnum over the planted seeds as added insurance against damping off (a fungal disorder that can kill seedlings). This is not the same sphagnum moss you would buy in a bale for outdoor planting, but a very fi ne STERILE sphagnum produced just for seed starting.
Most seeds need temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees, day and night, to germi-nate. The actual temperature varies for each seed type, so check the seed pack or catalog to be sure. After the seeds sprout, the temperature requirement is generally about 10 degrees lower than the germinating temperature.
The biggest mistake beginners make is underestimating the light requirements of the seedlings. Seeds will often sprout with little or no light, only to fl op over later due to lack of enough light. Supplemental fl uorescent lights should be lowered to about 2” above the seed fl at as soon as the seeds germinate. Then, when the seedlings are about 1/2” tall, move the lights up (or the trays down) so that the bulbs are 4” to 6” above the tops of the plants. As the seedling grow, keep adjusting the lights so the are always 4” to 6” above the tops of the plants. The lights should be on from 12 to 16 hours each day. Timers are available to turn the lights on and off. Using timers insures that the plants receive the same amount of light at the same time each day.
Avoid overwatering. Seeds need moisture to sprout, but young seedlings are suscep-tible to damping-off if kept too moist. Seedlings can tolerate some dryness but will fail quickly if drowned. You should always check the soil before watering. Some gardeners prefer a heavy mist to water their seed fl ats. If you use this method, make sure that you mist early in the day so the seedlings have a chance to dry before dark. This will lessen the chances of damping-off. I prefer to bottom water by pouring water into the tray containing the potted seedlings. After a few minutes, the soil becomes moist, but the surface of the soil is dry. I’ll use a cotton cloth or paper towel to draw excess water up out of the fl at without tipping it. Whatever method you use, it is vital that the seedling NEVER be left standing in water for a few minutes.
Many gardeners do a great job starting their seedlings indoors only to have them fail when they are moved to the garden. This can often be traced to a lack of “hardening off”. Seedlings grown indoors under lights need a period in which to become accustomed to real sunlight, wind, and other conditions not found inside. Find a shady, sheltered spot and give the seedlings a few days there. Be aware that they may need more water in this location. If there are cold nights (below 55 degrees), move them in until morning. Gradually move the seedlings to brighter locations until it’s time to plant them in their permanent home.
Seed starting can be challenging, but well worth the effort. While you can purchase many plants already started at the garden center when spring arrives, many of the more interest-ing varieties will only appear in your garden if you start them yourself. Thanks for the read

M&L Scrap and Auto Recycling has been a family owned and oper-ated business since 1950. Formally known as Ed Loya’s Auto Parts & Sal-vage, the business has been recently taken over by new owner Mark Guirk
and is now under new, and improved management. Our number one goal at M&L is to best serve you, in any way we possibly can. If there is a part you need we’re sure to have it, as we are constantly adding to, and updating our inventory of vehicles and parts. If, for some reason, we don’t have the part you need, we’ll do our best to get that part to you as quickly and painlessly as possible. Our online database of parts gives us access to thousands of salvage yards nationwide and finding the part you need is our pleasure. We have many plans to come for the future. Later in 2014 we plan to accept any scrap metal as there will be a scale and an area to dump your unwanted metals. You will get cash for your unwanted scrap metal and you will also be recycling. It’s a win win for the environment, and your wallet! We will also be dismantling cars as they come in, in order to keep our inventory as large as possible. New cars will be coming in almost every day in order to have the parts you need when you need them!

According to U.S. Depart-ment of Energy, aggressive driving that includes rapid ac-celeration and braking wastes gas, lowering gas mileage by 33 percent on highways and 5 percent when driving around town. Driving at higher speeds can also negatively aff ect gas mileage, which begins to decrease rapidly at speeds above
50 miles per hour, with each fi ve miles per hour more than 50 mph akin to paying an extra $0.25 per gallon for gas. Drivers who treat their vehicles as rolling storage closets also could be wast-ing fuel and money, as the DOE notes that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could re-duce its miles per gallon by 2 percent.
