(MS) -- Automobiles can be very resilient. Drivers typically don’t treat their cars with kid gloves, but most cars keep chugging along in spite of it. Of course, drivers who treat their cars well can expect to get as much in return from their vehicles. That’s especially true when winter weather arrives, which is the harshest season vehicles must endure every year. Harsh weather coupled with less-than-ideal roadways typically take their toll on a vehicle as the sea-son progresses, and it’s up to drivers to help their cars withstand the elements of winter and make it to spring in drivable condition. Short of moving to a locale that’s warm and sunny 12 months a year, there’s little drivers can do to avoid winter weather; however, there are several ways drivers can prepare their vehicles for the months ahead.

* Address your antifreeze. Much like a winter coat protects people from winter weather, antifreeze protects vehicles when the weather outside is frightful. Not every antifreeze is created equal, and inadequate antifreeze can cause water pump failure and even a cracked engine block. Drivers often fail to monitor their antifreeze levels throughout the winter, which can hurt their cars and might even be harmful to the environment. Traditional ethylene glycol, or EG, antifreezes have a sweet smell and taste that attracts animals and, if ingested, can harm local wildlife or even household pets. Propylene glycol antifreeze does not boast a sweet smell or taste, and though safe if ingested, reduces the likelihood that animals will be drawn to it. AMSOIL Propylene Glycol Anti-freeze is compatible with all other antifreeze products and does not require a complete system fl ush before usage, easing the transition from EG antifreeze to a more eco-friendly alternative.

* Check the vehicle’s charging system. Car batteries are forced to work harder in cold weather, making it easier for a battery to die when the mercury drops. To avoid being stranded in the cold, ask your mechanic to check the vehicle’s charging system before the onset of winter to ensure the battery is ready for the cold months ahead.

* Don’t tread lightly. Tire treads are especially important during the colder months, when icy or snow-packed roads make driving a dangerous undertak-ing. Tires with adequate traction are better equipped to handle roads that might be covered in ice, dirt or grime from sand and salt trucks. Check tire pressure regularly, especially when the temperatures are colder, and always infl ate tires to the manufacturer-recommended PSI. PSI ratings can often be found on the driver’s side door.

* Monitor motor oil. An engine is only as good as the motor oil that keeps it lubricated. Poor lubrication results in friction between engine components, ultimately leading to wear and potentially taking years off engine life. Drivers should regularly monitor their motor oil levels and adhere to the manufac-turer’s guidelines. When choosing a lubricant, look for a synthetic motor oil to maintain engine protection and performance. Synthetic motor oils provide signifi cant benefi ts over their conventional counterparts, particularly in colder weather when conventional motor oil thickens as the temperature drops. When the mercury starts to sink, conventional motor oils can slow starting rpm, re-strict oil fl ow to critical engine parts and increase wear on bearings and rings. Conversely, synthetic motor oils still fl ow or pump at temperatures as much as 50 below zero, allowing cars and trucks to start with greater ease.

* Maintain visibility. Visibility is especially poor during the winter months when falling snow and dirt and grime are kicked up from the rear tires of other vehicles, making it diffi cult to see. To maintain adequate visibility throughout the winter, inspect wiper blades to make sure they are in peak condition. Be sure the blade fully clears the windshield of snow, rain and any other debris that might fi nd its way into your driving line of vision. Never leave the house without enough windshield washer fl uid in the reservoir, and keep an extra bottle of fl uid in the trunk just to be safe. Winter driving conditions are rarely, if ever, ideal. More tips to help your car withstand the winter are available at www.amsoil.com.

Help Your Car Withstand Harsh Winter Weather

Did you know? New car owners often place a premium on protecting their cars from thieves, but thieves tend to prefer older vehicles. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the most stolen car in 2010 was the 1994 Honda Accord. And that top spot was not an aber-ration. The 1995 Honda Civic was the second most stolen car in 2010, fi nishing one spot ahead of the 1991 Toyota Camry. The NICB notes improved anti-theft technology as one of the main reasons for declining theft rates, which dropped 7.2 percent between 2009 and 2010. That improved technology is likely a big reason why thieves are tar-geting older vehicles that don’t benefi t from those improvements. One of the more infl uential technolog-ical advancements that’s helped reduce auto theft is an electronic chip in newer cars. These chips prevent usable keys from being easily made at a hardware store, meaning a car thief won’t be able to start the car even with a copied key.

The Extended Drain: How Far Can You Really Go Between

Oil and Filter Changes? (MS) -- For years, the 3,000 mile mark has been touted as the optimum interval for changing your motor oil and fi lter. It’s also an oil change interval that continues to be encouraged by the automotive oil change industry. Automobile manufacturers, oil fi lter manufacturers and lubricant manufacturers are now saying that you can safely extend oil drain intervals, saving you time, money and reducing the impact on the environment.

Breakthroughs in lubrication and fi ltration are two reasons why oil change intervals can safely be extended. Numerous factors come in to play in determining the oil change interval you should follow, including whether your car is under warranty, the car’s condition, the way you drive it, as well as oil and fi lter selection.

Every automobile manufacturer establishes a recommended oil change interval for each model they manufacture. Oil change intervals are now typically 5,000 to 7,500 miles for many new cars. You should follow your car manufacturer’s recommendations on oil and fi lter change in-tervals while the car is under warranty. If your car is no longer under warranty, you can extend your oil change and fi lter intervals by upgrading to a high quality synthetic motor oil and high performance oil fi lter. This will reduce the number of oil changes, saving you time and money while reducing the amount of oil purchased and disposed.

There are a number of quality synthetic motor oils available from which to choose. High per-formance synthetic motor oils such as Royal Purple, Mobil1, etc., typically have much greater oxidation stability than conventional mineral-based motor oils. Most lubricant manufacturers will give a recommended number of miles you can drive between oil changes under normal conditions.

If you elect to upgrade your motor oil, you should also upgrade your oil fi lter. Inexpensive fi l-ters are typically made with the 3,000 mile interval in mind. These fi lters often use low-quality paper media for fi ltration and they deteriorate rapidly after 3,000 miles.

There are a number of new high performance premium oil fi lters on the market from manufac-turers such as Royal Purple, Wix and K&N. These fi lters are made for extended oil drain inter-vals. For example, Royal Purple uses a proprietary long-life, micro-glass media that provides protection for 12,000 miles. It also provides an increased level of protection due to the density of the fi ltration. You can fi nd out more at www.royalpurple.com

If your car is still under warranty, stick with the car manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals. If your car is no longer under warranty, you can go beyond the typical 3,000 mile oil change or beyond the oil change monitor’s recommendations by upgrading to a high perfor-mance synthetic motor oil and high performance oil fi lter. Just be sure to check recommended change interval for both the oil and fi lter your purchase.
