The therapeutic qualities of water are well known. In Madeira the abundance of this natural element is used

in health and beauty treatments. Thalassotherapy, the exposure to seawater and the application of sea products

(such as seaweed and sea salt), supply vitamins and mineral salts that help hydrate the body. In the vichy shower

the drops of water massage and help one’s muscles relax.

make aromatherapy in Madeira compulsory. The archipelago has

many natural aromas that help relax the body and free the mind.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) with its sweet aroma helps free one’s

emotions. While the floral and citrusy aroma of the Anemone-leaved

Crane’s-bill soothes one’s senses, the Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

refreshes and helps relieve one’s respiratory difficulties. French

Lavender, Sandalwood (Santalum album), Eucalyptus, clover, ginger

incomparably breathable air in the forest. One is instantly absorbed by a sense of complete fusion with the earth,

thus finding some form of identity with century-old Sweet Chestnut trees, whose roots are well entrenched in the

soil.

The fragrance of exotic flowers - like the Pride of Madeira, the Yellow Foxglove, the Anemone- leaved

Crane’s-bill, the White Orchards, among many others, fill the air with sweet and energetic aromas. Even though these

flowers were introduced in Madeira a long time ago, their beauty is still appreciated today, for they tinge the all-

embracing greenery of Madeira with their vivid colours and tones.
