Space exploration is the useof astronomy and space technology toexplore outer space.

We cant appreciate its true impact justyet

When Christopher Columbus wanted to sail westto reach the Indies, he trawled Europe forpatronage. At the time, it was considered a foolserrand. Eventually people realized that Columbushad transformed the course of human history.Space exploration is similar, inasmuch as somepeople think it's futile. It may only be in the future

that people appreciate what a huge impact it's hadon society. Who knows what incredible discoveriesare just around the corner, what revolutionary newtechnologies may appear as a result of spaceexploration?

The first successful human spaceflightwas Vostok 1 carrying 27 year oldRussian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12,

1961. The spacecraft completed one orbitaround the globe, lasting about 1 hour and 48minutes. Gagarin's flight resonated around theworld; it opened an entirely new era in space

    exploration: human spaceflight.

Space exploration has the potential of discovering the yetundiscovered facts about space. It has a great potential ofresolving mysteries that surround the outer space. It maybring about a dramatic change to our lives.

Through the exploration of space, we may find new minerals, new precious materials. Exploring space may lead us to thediscovery of an all-new world. An unexpected progress andadvancement that the living beings in space might have

made, may take us by surprise.

Space exploration whets the human appetite for adventure. There are many brave souls around the world who wish totake risks in life. They love adventure and they love making

the impossibilities possible. Space exploration satisfies thishuman desire of adventure.

One of the most important cons of space exploration is themoney spent in the research. The money that is spent on spaceexploration can rather be spent to reduce poverty in theunderdeveloped countries. It requires a huge amount of money

to be spent on the journey to space. Some believe that the moneycan be diverted towards the poor. When many cannot even meettheir basic needs of life, is it right to spend on space exploration?

Manned missions to space impose a huge amount of risk on the

astronauts who travel to space. A travel to space also risks thehuman life. The human beings who travel in space have to faceharsh conditions and challenge themselves to adapt tounfriendly environment. Unmanned missions and those usingrobots to explore space are a solution to risking the human life. But robots mean another new technology, thus incurring addedcosts.

A satellite is an object which has been placedinto orbit by human endeavor. Such objects aresometimes called artificial satellites to

distinguish them from natural satellites such asthe Moon.

Anti-Satellite weapons/"Killer Satellites" are satellites that arearmed, designed to take out enemy warheads, satellites, otherspace assets. They may have particle weapons, energyweapons, kinetic weapons, nuclear and/or conventionalmissiles and/or a combination of these weapons.

Astronomical satellites are satellites used for observation ofdistant planets, galaxies, and other outer space objects.

Biosatellites are satellites designed to carry living organisms, generally for scientific experimentation.

Communicationssatellites are satellites stationed in space forthe purpose of telecommunications.

Miniaturized satellites are satellites of unusually low weightsand small sizes. New classifications are used to categorizethese satellites: minisatellite (500100 kg), microsatellite (below100 kg), nanosatellite (below 10 kg).

Earth observation satellites are satellites intendedfor non-military uses suchas environmental monitoring, meteorology, mapmaking etc.

Space stations are man-made structures that aredesigned for human beings to live on in outerspace. A space station is distinguished from othermanned spacecraft by its lack ofmajor propulsion or landing facilities instead,

other vehicles are used as transport to and fromthe station. Space stations are designed formedium-term living in orbit, for periodsof weeks, months, or even years.
