City Neighbourhood – the boundary defined by the City of Edmonton as the “neighbourhood” boundary. This is the name of the neighbourhood as it relates to Municipal and Federal census data.

EPSB Neighbourhood – the boundary defined by Edmonton Public Schools as the “neighbourhood” boundary. These neighbourhoods make up attendance areas for schools. While the most of the boundaries will be the same as City of Edmonton neighbourhoods, some boundaries will be different and in many cases a City of Edmonton neighbourhood will be made up of more than one EPSB neighbourhood.

Attendance Area – the area that includes all the EPSB neighbourhoods designated to a school. Not all EPSB schools have attendance areas.

School Utilization – a measure of how “full” a school is. This is based on a new formula (Instructional Area Model) based on the instructional areas (areas used by students for instruction) of a school building and the adjusted enrolment of the school. School Utilization (%) = Adjusted Enrolment/Net Capacity

Adjusted Enrolment – the total enrolment for a school adjusted by weighting kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students at 0.5 and all “severe” special needs students (students with special needs codes of 41-47) at 3 (shown by the adjusted enrolment at Westlawn). Adjusted Enrolment = 0.5*(Pre-K/Kindergarten students) + (grades 1-12 students) + 2*(“severe” students)

Net Capacity – The total number of student spaces in the building less any exempt uses. Exempt uses are administrative uses or not-for-profit leases. The total number of student spaces based on the instructional areas of a building and not the other areas such as staff rooms, gathering areas, mechanical rooms or corridors. There are a number of factors considered in the complex formula such as grades taught in the building and rating of CTS, gymnasium and library spaces.

Very small percentage of homemakers suggesting child care is important

Relatively high rental population, especially in Glenwood and West Jasper Place. Hard to predict population trends in those areas

Enrolment Information Historical Enrolment (Total School Enrolment)

All neighbourhoods in the cluster have stabilized and do not show signs of further decline or significant growth (a lesser amount of growth may naturally occur as homes turn over to new families).

Not all students that live in an attendance area attend their designated school. This means that students travel into an attendance area to attend a school and students also travel out of an attendance area as well.

Enrolment Information Observations/Trends - What does the data tell you?

General downward

Spikes? Schools open, Arts program

Stable population

There are many, many students who are leaving Westlawn Junior High enrolment – 300, students in neighborhood 550. Why?

Does there need to be programming to bring them in?

Some schools have only one class/grade that’s very difficult for programming

From 1980 onwards enrolment looks pretty steady, best fit line would be helpful

Neighborhood totals tend to mirror enrolment numbers so in/out of students seems to even out

Afton and Westlawn enrolment seems more volatile than the others

Both jump and fall within a range

Sherwood and Glendale seem to be consistently declining, but gradually

Questions/Wonderings – What do I still need to know?

What impacted Westlawn’s population in 2003 or 1997?

Glendale numbers looks high. Net capacity is 208 but late 60’s to early 70’s is over 300?

What are enrolment predictions for next five years? This is more important than historical numbers

Migration Information Observations/Trends - What does the data tell you?

Junior High – 2 or 3 different

Opportunity students – gr. 7

Parkview K-9 - When grade 6 goes to 7 and have siblings at Sherwood, they sometimes go too. Whole families more to Parkview

What happens to the Afton students who are currently designated to Hillcrest?

What if they’re in a new K-9 school? Will they continue at the new school and not go to Hillcrest?

How does this affect Hillcrest?

More students are coming from the district and other parts of the city than are leaving the district for Afton, Glendale and Westlawn, but not for Sherwood

Programming is probably more important than the facility but there is a relationship between the two

Afton’s migration away from Westlawn could be partly because no arts emphasis, and no music program at all

Glendale students don’t tend to migrate away from Westlawn

Sherwood students seem more likely to leave the district for junior high

Maybe they leave when they don’t need full day kindergarten?

Westlawn depends on feeder schools for the majority of its enrollment

Questions/Wonderings – What do I still need to know?

Is there any information that might suggest a reason for Sherwood’s out of district migration?

What does this mean for our planning? Why are students leaving the cluster? Is it for different programming or because they don’t like the options in the cluster?

Programs are drawing students away so let’s keep good programs in

Too many are leaving, what programs are we missing?

More students are leaving than coming, doesn’t seem to match the data on the previous pages?

Sherwood has the lowest local attendees and Afton/Westlawn have higher numbers of local attendees. Does this recommend the Afton / Westlawn option?

Surprised at some of the distances people travel for programming. Speculated that school choice could be affected by location of grandparents (aging neighborhoods) or location of work (hospital)

Does a large percentage of students leaving for regular programming mean they are leaving because of perception or reputation? If they’re not leaving for special programming then why leave the area?

How are these stats lined up with other areas? What is normal?

Do other factors play a role in leaving? All day Kindergarten? Daycares? Nonprofits? Exc.

Can we get information for each school about how many kids are coming into the area and leaving the area for programming? Relates to how alternative programs draw.

What does Hillcrest have for programming?

Of these that leave (top 10) why are they choosing?
