Introduction

In the last three decades, Peru has undergone unprecedented economic growth, which has re-emphasized public and private interest in capitalizing and developing infrastructure sur-rounding the country’s ancestral past. Since Walter Alva’s discovery of the tomb of the Lord of Sipan in 1987, the increase in archaeological exploration has uncovered previously unknown civilizations, and reconstructed relationships between seemingly disconnected cultures, ar-chaeological sites, as well as between elements of their cultural production. This explosion of investigation and exploration yielded revelations that have changed the per-ception of the origin of civilization in the world. The discovery of the 5000+ year-old Sacred City of Caral, ceremonial and trading heart of a large region near the port of Supe, in the north of Lima, added to the world a mother civilization. This discovery radically changed science's understanding of how and where civilization emerged in the South American continent. It also became clear that it began, more or less simultaneously, in Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Indus Valley, Egypt, and Peru.

Long before the Inca empire, which conquered and connected a vast percentage of the South American territory, the Mochica and Chimú civilizations flourished between 100 to 700 AD. These cultures, located in the valley of the Moche river, in the northern coast of Peru, devel-oped an extraordinary adaptation to life in the desert, and left a detailed account of every aspect of their daily life, their cosmology, their ceremonies, and the way they responded to the environmental conditions of their territory.A cosmology based on principles radically different to the Western equivalent, produced archi-tectures of extraordinary complexity, elegance and majesty.

Of special interest to us in these representations are the clues to their perception of space and form, their spatial values, connections between cosmology and cognition. The relative strangeness of their architectures is a continuous source of fascination to the instruction. The continuity of development of a system of form through time and geographies, poses a question, and prompts the observation of architectural space in relation to cosmology, and in interconnection to their cultural expressions, and forms of representation accross the Andean horizon.

Research and discovery have enabled the weaving of elements of information previously dis-connected into a detailed image of a lineage of civilizations that lived under a consistent cos-movision, distinct from previous assumptions based on Western paradigms of thought. All physical cultural manifestations form a continuum, which including their architectures, are representations of that cosmology. It has become possible, therefore to reconstruct a direct line that connects the varied expres-sions of space and form in the Andean culture from 3500 BC, to the time of the Inca, ending in with the Conquest in 1532 AD. Many of these traits survive today in the expressions of traditional native populations, even after 500+ years post-conquest.What has been revealed is an uninterrupted continuity and evolution of values, cosmology, of belief system, construction technique, forms, iconography, aesthetics, and art, through a vast time in the astonishing landscapes or Peru.

Origin of the Question

The Andean universe of forms is manifested in a concise family of expressions: Two and three dimensional representations, decorative patterns, systems of data recording and hieratic sym-bols follow defined rules. These rules apply, and are consistent through scale and use.The flat nature of the 2D correlates with a logic of horizontal spatial layouts of powerful ex-periential qualities, centered on the manipulation of perspective, and the horizon as primary spatial generator.

Departing from a cosmology defined by by the implications of ancestry and succesion, the Andean cosmology locates the past “ahead” in the XY horizontal space-plane. Movement in space, therefore happens towards the locus of the past, which holds the highest cosmological value. Time is also the highest value in this universe. Duration and length of spa-tial sequences follow this hierarchic system.Perspective is, therefore, a spatial value, time dedicated to motion-within-perspective is meaningful. The extension of that process through serendipity produces an architectural spati-ality, alternate and simultaneous with the “program".

The study process during the visit in Peru will consist of specific, dedicated observations, and recording of elements of the two categories, patterns and perspectives, in both 2D and 3D expressions and representations. This emphasis on the horizontal, and 2D is mediated by a third dimension connected to hierarchy. From this basic relationship, our study intuits a 2.5D, which the studio aims to unlock.

The Chakana symbol, a primal and recurrent iconographic element, has its center on the hori-zon, while occupying a perspectival ‘here’. which, consequently locates the ‘now’ in the point of view. Furthermore, that point on the horizon is also the perspectival point. We can specu-late that it ties the here / now with the past (there / then.)The Chakana also suggests (three) more horizons, elevated from each other, in a pyramidal scheme. This arrangement reflects symmetrically into the underworld, with the horizon as hinge, cre-ating thus the cross shape. The ‘now’ is the hinge, or horizon, between the upper and lower worlds. The time-space interrelationship is stressed at the conceptual and experiential levels.

What are the values which connect, or translate the horizontal, 2D geometry into perspective and time? What effects can we observe which challenge our perception, or cognition of space/time? What applications can we find, relevant to our architecture?

What the Studio’s work is about

The studio work begins with a profusion of focused observations which set up, and feed the search for synthesis of pattern - perspective relationships. A set of elements of observation are selected from the first week of lectures / museums / guided excursions.Visits to ancient architectural sites are the grounds of collection and documentation: a pro-cess of “sampling” of relevant or useful conditions. Observation becomes the mode within which an architectural inquiry is developed. The experi-ence demands a state of heightened attention. Critical recording is constant, through notes, sketches, photographs. A personal and critical way of framing is developed from this process.

The student-propelled design process feeds off of a heterogeneity of contemporary sources and methods,  and is composed of a sequence of critical representation and thinking-through -making exercises involving manual and digital fabrication, in generative sequence. The process engages the principles studied; seeks the realization, and fruitful interpolation of elements of pattern and perspective, connecting them through the development of rigorously speculative formal/spatial hypotheses. The studio is fast-paced, and utilizes informed, critical discussion within a succession of feedback loops of representation, fabrication, manufactiring, and constant critical dialog. The outcome of the studio is thus, the critically-curated and synthesized process of recording and experimentation, which leads to, and includes a spatial/formal architectural hypothesis.

WEEK 3: Southern Andes (Cusco and Sacred Valley)

The third week is dedicated to Cusco. Ancient capital of the Inca empire, and important city during the colony.Cusco is an indigenous city, but it is physically defined by the juxtaposition of the two cul-tures, Andean and Spanish, which can be physically experienced in the construction of the city, where Spanish colonial structures are visibly built upon the Inca walls. Cusco is a cosmopoli-tan place, with great nightlife, and the perfect scale to walk. The first day in Cusco is spent in adaptation to the high altitude (11, 152 feet above sea lev-el.) There is a light walking tour around the City center.

Visits to several important Inca sites, including the experience of sunrise in Machu Picchu are planned, along with sightseeing of some extraordinary landscapes, both natural and engi-neered.First day: Resting and adaptation to high altitude; light strolling through Cusco city center, churches, monasteries, etcVisits in Cusco: Qoriqancha (Temple of the Sun), temples of Saqsayhuaman, Shrine if Qenqo, fortress of Puka PukaraSacred Valley (One whole day), Includes:, Citadel of Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, TampumachaySacred Valley South (One whole day), includes: Chinchero, Moray, community of Misminay, Tipon, PikillaqtaMachu Picchu at sunrise

Special care must be taken in regards to the difference in altitude, which is intense. Measures will be taken to prevent altitude sickness. Since we are traveling in winter, temperatures are low in the Andes. Bring clothes appropriate for freezing temperatures (Sub-zero is unusual.)This list is preliminary, some sites may be added, or removed. Visits to some sites are contin-gent on weather conditions.

Although this itinerary has been planned for cost-efficiency, and to make the most of the time spent at every location. A modicum of free time has been allocated for breathers, strolling, or shopping in the city. See detailed Day-by-Day itinerary on pages 20 and 21
