What If……

Every Innovator on the Planet

In Climate-Tech, Life Science, and Material Tech

Awakened Tomorrow to Find They had Access to anEntirely New Range of Invention Tools

Tools that Could Remove their Most Intractable Obstaclesto Create Transformational Solutions

To Earth’s Most Urgent Problems

Innovate. Commercialize. Capitalize.

Today, we are at an inflection point in space commercialization…

- NASA historically focused on scientific advances to sustain human life in space and exploration- But now, the broader commercial markets are discovering a whole new world

- Inventions that can transform problems on earth in ways unthinkable using terrestrial methods.

A now accessible, mere 250 miles above our heads, there is a 10X expansion of new real estate

available for research, testing and manufacturing

and combined with 30 Years of NASA IP/ Patents for Commercial Harvesting, opportunities abound.

Now the starting gun has been fired and the race for the broader commercialization of space has begun.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO MAXIMIZE THIS OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BENEFIT OF MANKIND?

Innovate. Commercialize. Capitalize.

Innovate. Commercialize. Capitalize.

But What About the Demand Side of Space?

• Novel Materials with superior properties that can be used in a variety of large markets (green metals, semiconductors, fiber optics)

• Broad-based sustainability programs focused on: climate change, plastics in the ocean, water scarcity, sustainable crop production, and energy conservation.

• Drug Development: better targeting and quick to fail models

• Remote sensing and satellite technology capability: maritime security, weather monitoring, agriculture monitoring, energy, urban development, and national security

• Crop science: indoor/vertical agriculture, water management, and beneficial bacteria

• Fundamental material properties: novel materials and better manufacturing processes

Innovate. Commercialize. Capitalize.

What is Unique about Low Earth Orbit?

Microgravity“Gravity as a variable, not a constant”

All Matter Behaves Differently

Extreme Conditions“Not Replicable at Scale on Earth”

Accelerated Degradation

• Weightlessness + vacuum + extreme conditions• = new frontier for experimentation• Zero sedimentation or compression of materials• Uniform suspension of particulates• Absence of hot/cold convection currents avoids distortions• Rapid formation of uniform crystals and proteins • Fluid dynamics altered (water floats/does not “find it’s level” • Lack of ‘pancaking effect’ facilitates micro manufacturing

and 3D printing processes

• Solar Heat over 400+ degrees F• Instantaneous Freezing• Extreme Hot/Cold Cycles every 90 mins• Exposure to Intense Radiation• Clean Room Quality Vacuum Environment• Prolonged Weightlessness for long term experimentation• Facilitates testing of advanced materials

• Every 90 mins the entire globe is imaged and searchable• 24/7 ultra high resolution observatory capabilities• (down to the label on a bottle floating at sea)• Pollution source tracking for global accountability• (Industrial Waste, Toxic Plumes, Ocean Dumps)• Real-time predictive analytics weather/fires• Infrared Penetration for water and minerals location

Vantage Point“Fact-Based Global Accountability”

And it’s not Just the ISS Anymore – a Whole Range of new Space Factories are Imminent and Creating New Opportunity

Private investment in space companies in 2020 set a new annual record with $8.9 billion, according to Space Capital. “Despite expectations that space Infrastructure would be hardest hit by the pandemic, 2020 turned out to be a record for investment,” Space Capital managing partner Chad Anderson

Innovate. Commercialize. Capitalize.

However Perceptions Do Not Match Reality!

• There is a perception that just a few billionaires have access to space and using it for space tourism

• Most people and organizations have no idea of the benefits of space or the current opportunities

• There is lack of awareness of how space can benefit planet Earth

Will Whitehorn, the head of UKspace, said the heir to the throne’s comments were “misinformed” and could be seen as “anti-technology”.

UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development

We Use Sustainability as a Major Platform for Space Activity

Innovate. Commercialize. Capitalize.

Challenge Space SolutionWater Conservation • Gather large scale global data about the planet’s water resources to support development of

new water systems for energy and conservation• Use microgravity to study water droplet formation and flow to mitigate water usage on earth• Improved crop sustainability techniques• Development/advancement of water processing membrane technologies for use on Earth

Climate Resilience • Collect atmospheric/climate data across the planet to improve model predictions for climate change impacts

• This could include data related to air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, agriculture, etc.

Waste Minimization & Pollution Prevention

• Utilize remote sensing capabilities to gather atmospheric pollution data across the globe• Develop novel packaging materials that have superior properties compared to plastic and don’t

pollute the oceans

Energy • Demonstrate new technologies in a closed, weightless system (also an extreme/remote environment) that improve energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions, utilize clean sources

Challenge Space SolutionVehicle & Fuel Use • Demonstrate fuel/propulsion technologies in an extreme/remote environment that improve

energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions, utilize clean sources

• Gather fuel emission data in the atmosphere across a large area to monitor high pollution

areas

Sustainable Buildings • Gather data sets through thermal IR remote sensing which can identify areas where

sustainable buildings are needed

Electronics Stewardship • Assembling new “cleaner” electronic materials through possible manufacturing capabilities

on platform with fewer defects

• Testing degradation of electronic materials with high exposure to solar radiation, atomic

oxygen, thermal cycling

Plastics • Novel materials with superior properties resulting in plastics as non-pollutants

• Rapid material testing to ensure performance in extreme environments (i.e. deep oceans)

• Mitigation of plastic migration paths

Challenge Space SolutionClimate Change and effects on erosion, rising sea and CO2 levels

• Remote sensing for Earth Observation focusing on coastlines to help inform land reclamation

• Tracking rising ocean temperatures, changes in ocean water chemistry

• CO2 sequestration

Plastics in the Ocean detracting tourists, affecting marine life, and deteriorating boat health

• Remote sensing for Earth Observation tracking plastics in the Ocean and reporting back on large concentrations for clean-up and mitigation

• Tracking of Marine Mammals in relation to plastic waste

• Studying water filtration for plastic could elucidate new and novel methods for plastic removal in the oceans

• Ultimately creating a novel plastic that is not a pollutant

Challenge Space Solution

Optimal Packaging: Developing

packaging materials that are

effective and recyclable

• Microgravity produce materials with fewer defects, which have superior physical properties to

earth based counterparts resulting in fewer waste products

• The extreme environment of space degrades materials rapidly, making it a perfect platform to

test if/when packaging materials fail

Supply Chain Efficiency and

Optimization

• Data synergies involving urban development, transportation options, and energy usage

Environmental Stewardship:

Reducing usage of water,

energy, greenhouse gases in

facilities

• Microgravity enables for a more comprehensive study of water filtration, CO2 separation, and

thermal management systems

• The LEO vantage point can allow for large data sets to be collected involving markers of excess

CO2, water usage, etc.

Biofilm Thickness & Corrosion – Nalco Champion

• Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) causes $0.5-1.5T in damages and lost revenue annually, mostly in oil & gas industries

• Driving forces behind MIC risk are: number of cells, total mass, and thickness of film

• The microgravity environment enables these factors to increase in biofilms

• Can determine if these thicker films lead to more corrosion in carbon steel

Impact- Reduction of damaged oil & gas pipelines, lessening the risk of leaks/spills, potentially saving billions of dollars in damages
