SAN SIROTHE NEIGHBORHOODSan Siro neighborhood was built betwe-en 1935 and 1947 in response to the growing request of social housing in Mi-lan. Houses and urban plan were preci-sely designed to fit to the needs of first-half-of-century factory workers. That kind of man no longer exists now and maybe it has never existed. Alrea-dy in 1954 the short film “Una lezione di urbanistica”, written by Giancarlo De Carlo, ironically shows the limits of the trivialization of the concept of man led by so-called scientific investigations on the city. The district today has a rigid structure with undersized private spaces and fragmentary poorly mantained public spaces. The precise design of the district’s plan offers chances for a re-think of abando-ned spaces, interstices, isolated and forgotten areas. That resources combi-ned with a strategical position makes San Siro the perfect place for a contem-porary way of living in the city: the tem-
porary one. We choose three kinds of temporary inhabitant: students, migrants and tou-rists. San Siro is the district of Milan with the highest percentage of immigrants. We proposed to make San Siro intere-sting for its multicultural atmosphere, an informal environment ideal for students and a particoular, modernist urban land-scape.

STRATEGIES
4_STUDENT HALLLocated on the demolished building [4] area
The student house is located near the metro station. The type plan of the student hall is composed by rooms for students and common spaces, both outdoor and indoor.
Rooms ( 3,6 x 4 m ) have private bathrooms and common bal-conies.
the main aim is to create flexible spaces according to the needs of the targets. poetry is the main theme for the experience for turists looking for a particoular experience, community is the focus for student and pri-vacy is the one for migrants and their families.
PRIVATE SPACES
The main aim of those stra-tegies is to offer and create exchanges and condivision between temporary and per-manent inhabitants, in which they can interact and know each other. To do so, the strategies in-volve acessibility, common spaces and spaces for sociality.
COMMUNITY
1_ GATESLocated at the entrance of the passing courts [1]
They indicate the entrance of the passing courts and contain the notice-board in which people could exchange announces and information about the activity of the neighborhood. The entrance are highlighted by the change of the paving.
The notice-board rooms are located upon the small spaces of the porter-lodge and are open toward the garden. The spaces are freely organized in smaller parts for reading and bartering.
2_ COMMON SPACESLocated on size sufficient inner courts [2]
Shared spaces with different functions which strenghten the sense of community between temporary and permanent inhabitants. Shared kitchen and laundries are available for everyone.
The modular structure offers a lot of different possibilities: external covered space for summer time, kids playgrounds and garden lounge.
TAVERN Located on blind fronts [6]
Bars e outdoors areas for small events. The taverns are located near the student house, but can be used by both temporary and permanent inhabitants. The structure of the tavern is simple and modular and is

suitable for small events. Modular forniture can be used both for scaffoldings and for sitting.
ALBERGO DIFFUSORooms are located on flat roofs [5] towards the street
This type of hotel offers a unique experience to the tourists, whom can live for a small amount of time on the roofs of San Siro’s building. the image of the neighborhood is renewed by this kind of situation, which will attract different people than the usual inhabitants of the district.
Rooms are indipendent and have minimum igenic services; common services and the lodge are grouped on the tavern on the ground, as for the tavern of the students those spaces are available for all the inhabitants both permanent than temporary.
5_ 6_ VERTICAL CAMPSITELocated on blind fronts [6]
This temporary solution is thought to offer a minimum space for special events, such as big match at San Siro stadium or important festival like Salone del Mobile. The structure can welcome huge amount of tourist for very short period of time. the structure of the vertical camping is made whith a steel
tubolar system similar to the one used on construction site. The module ( 2,5 m x 2,5 m ) are isolated by textile. the structure is made with cheap and light material. As in scaffolding, the structure can be placed and removed in few hours.

SAN SIRO: WAY OF LIVING
San Siro is a strict district, de-signed with a precise planning method. The ways to dwell and live in there result unsuitable to contemporary behaviours. Starting from people with different origins and cultures, tourists and students coming from all Europe, we tried to regenerate its public image, making it a contempo-rary space with a wide range of possibilities
GAP ON MARKET ROAD
Passing courtyard il cortile opens up on viale Aretusa and links the open air market by means of a promenade. The central court hosts com-mon functions
COMMERCIAL STREET AND PUBLIC COURTYARD
In via Micene commercial activities are located on the ground floor; the courtyard passing through via Preneste and via Tracia hosts com-mon spaces for local users. Two green corridors link the streets: they are created opening the southern courts on via Micene
SELINUNTE PIAZZA
Around the square the rooms of the scattered hotel design a new landscape; in the meantime the central space is available for a vertical campsite on the occasion of popular city events
PUBLIC COURTYARDS
Some kitchens, loundry-ro-oms and children spaces are located in immigrant-inhabited courtyards.Residences give the oppor-tunity to make people meet together
HALL OF STUDEN-TS, COURTYARD, SCATTERED HOTEL
The courtyard of the scat-tered hotel hosts a tavern, some seats and common spaces. This space can be used from students to have a break and to know new people
