at a more visceral level, to the more general culture of their construction.”

studio phylosophy
The general objective of the studio is to explore the relationship between the autonomy of built form and the influence this built form has on the city and its inhabitants.
We acknowledge the autonomy of architecture by the fact that is has its own rules, not applicable to any other discipline. We try to understand some of these rules an reapply them in different ways. The studio understands that architecture is a discipline with a rich history. Every new project makes a contribution to that lineage.
We acknowledge that architecture is not autonomous, as it only makes sense the moment it becomes part of a place. The studio will explore the relationship between the built form and the city.
The built form is a medium that only exists in reality. The studio will describe this reality with multiple techniques: models, drawings on different scales, diagrams, text, images etc. Each technique has its own logic and rules and in a way is autonoumous too.
Together these documents will give an overall understanding of the built form an will allow us to discuss about its influence on the city.
The studio tags would be: precise, buildable, informed, tectonic, integrated, resilient

spaces for economy in the city
Places like Turn & Taxis, Van Nelle, Felixpakhuizen show us that the economy often generates highly specific but also highly sustainable/resilient buildings/spaces.
Today their economic origin is gone but they are stiil of great value to us and are often re-used in a different way, unthinkable at teh time of their creation.
Today the economy can also generate new spaces that can be equally resilient and sustainable.
Today, the economy can be a driving force to stear cities way from the path of gentrification and segregation.
Not enough attention in education is paid to this powerful motor of architectural production.
The studio would like to work - on a 3 year base - to research, design and document architecture for the economy of 2015 and beyond.

The studio will document several unique examples of buildings the economy has generated.
The objective is to: - discover the different nature of economy driven realisations - create a frame of references - learn to make high-end and precise documents

program
si te
The overall theme “Spaces for economy in the city” will be tested starting from a specific set of programs. A selection of relevant (*) economic activities has been made:
- sheltered workshops (1 & 2) (**)- stacked industries - food factories.
Each theme is complemented with ‘housing’. Hence the program is hybrid. Each tutor will deal with one theme.
Five specific sites were selected. Each tutor will work on all of these five sites.
As a student you should choose a program. The tutors will make sure the groups are balanced and appoint a site to each student as this is an individual excercise.
(*) The selection of economic branches was based on an analysis of the policy which is promoted by the local governments.(**) The sheltered workshops excercise is part of the Academic Design Office program.

on sheltered workshops
Being part of the Academic Design Office program, this exercise will start from a program description of a corporate client i.c. Ryhove vzw. The shelterd workshops provide a tailor made workspace for disabled people. There activities range from packaging (food & non-food), assembly to graphical work.Ryhove wants to employ people living in the Ghent region.
program- sheltered workshop with food-packaging zone- administration zone (offices, meeting rooms , …)- kitchen & restaurant- dressing rooms- parking & logistical space+ (affordable) differentiated housing
The usable space should be maximized but balanced.
important questions:1. To which extent is the proposed architecture ready for a new destination?2. Is the ‘housing’-component approached in a traditional or innovative/collective way? output- 3 A0 panels + model: at least the documents made in the two first weeks should be made but for the individual project + one A0 panel that can be added.- Toledo guidelines:

on staked industries
The dominant typology for recent industrial building is the unilevel box. As open space is getting rare, the question rises: how can activities be stacked in an efficient way? Can it be stacked with other functions to? What happens if housing is introduced?

on food factories
Food is being produced outside the city and a set of intermediate factories and dealers distances the production from the consumer. If we want create awareness about the way food is produced, make production more sustainable, and pay fare prices to the farmers, it is important to narrow the gap between production and consumption.

The aim of the synthesis is to compose all the produced material into one coherent presentation document. It should be clear that the panels communicate 1 overall project.
It’s also important that you stick to the proposed layout, in order to make a publication of the studio as a coherent set of projects.

JAN-PETER WINGENDER - OFFICE WINHOV 28/10 - 18.30H - ST-NIKLAASSTRAAT 27-N°427
Office Winhov is an Amsterdam-based architecture and urban-design office, founded by Joost Hovenier, Jan Peter Wingender and Uri Gilad. Operating internationally, the office is currently engaged in a wide range of projects, characterized by a careful understanding of context and a strong formal and material presence. The office came to public attention in 2006 with two residential towers along the former harbour-front of Amsterdam.
approachDirect personal engagement constitutes the basis of their practice; resulting projects often exceed the expectations of their clients. They consciously seek opportunities to develop by changing the conditions in which they operate, bringing their understanding of architecture to new situations and diverse types, and scales, of projects. The development of their built work is supported by teaching and a broad range of academic and professional research.
projectsTheir work is rooted within the shared language of architecture. From this position, they develop their projects through a process of careful observation and refinement. They have a particular interest in the threshold between the building and the city and the relationship between the public and private realms. Their enthusiasm for the city has led them to create buildings that strengthen the character and connectivity of the existing urban fabric. They believe a successful building should last a long time; this interest in longevity underlies their commitment to environmental, social and cultural sustainability.

studio attitude and considerationsstudio SEC 2015-2016
A proposal will be successful when a specific scale or fragment enriches the overall design idea. Even though we do not ask a completely designed building, you will have to have an idea of the overall architecture of the building.A clear idea of the “parti” is essential.
We will be very specific about the drawings, models, presentations that you have to make. Not a whole lot of things plans, models, ... have to be produced, but a lot of work and attention will have to go into the quality of your output. The drawings and models you produce will have to be self-explanatory and should do justice to the conceptual design effort that has gone into it.So use the lines, colours, text on your sheet of paper to maximum effect. Your drawings and models should do the talking, not yourself.
Also:- Presence on Wednesday is obligatory- Presence on the Key Lecture is obligatory- Presence during the full review and jury days is obligatory- You should be on time: - 8.30h: pun-up - 9.00h: studio
Pay extra attention to:
- Toledo hand-in: respect the deadlines- Photo shoots of the models: on time- Pin-up or presentation of models on review days has to be on time.
- Always bring your A3 workbook with the weekly progress. The tutors cannot comment if no intensive work has been done.- Always pin up your work so it can be discussed.
