FOLLOW IN THE WAKE OF THE
ANCIENT SPANISH AND
PORTUGUESE MARINERS on this
8-day cruise aboard the beautiful
Sea Cloud II, soaking up the rich
history of the Iberian Peninsula. Begin
at the incomparable Alhambra Palace
in Granada for an introduction to the
region’s Moorish heritage, then
embark in Malaga for a transit of the
Strait of Gibraltar. Visit Seville, capital
of the Spanish province of Andalucía;
Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and the
departure point for most of the
Portuguese expeditions during the
Age of Discovery; and Porto, a World
Heritage site and the center of port
wine production. Spend an afternoon
in beautiful, unspoiled Islas Cíes
National Park en route to the great
pilgrimage destination of Santiago de
Compostela. Conclude in Bilbao
at the iconic Frank Gehry–designed
Guggenheim Museum. Learn about
the historical, cultural, and strategic
importance of Iberia’s great port cities
from lecturers from Harvard and our
cosponsors on this program, Yale and
Stanford; enjoy the rhythms of fado
and fl amenco; and sample outstanding
wines and distinctive regional cuisines.
Explore Granada’s Alhambra fortress and Generalife gardens, exceptional examples of royal Arab residences from the medieval period and remarkably unaltered or destroyed by time or restoration.
Cover: Enjoy a performance of fado, a uniquely Portuguese music genre characterized by sentiments of resignation and melancholia that was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.
