Spanish 300: Latin American Women Writers

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

This course will cover representative writings of Latin American women authors, spanning

approximately four centuries. By the end of the class you should be familiar with the

works and lives of the major female authors from Latin America from the colonial period

through the present.

The class will be a combination of both lectureI will provide background information and

any social and political explanations necessary for you to understand and appreciate the

textsand discussion. Therefore it is ESSENTIAL that you have the reading done beforethe class. If you cannot complete the reading, at least skim it so that you have SOME idea

of whats going on before class [you WILL need to finish the reading later].

Reading assignments will be approximately 50 pages per class. Some readings are more

difficult than othersplan ahead! I will give you an indication of what to expect in terms

of difficulty, and what I want you to be thinking about. Dont wait until an hour before

class to attempt to finish the reading.

You will on occasion be asked to prepare a brief presentation for the following class,usually lasting about 5 minutes. This presentation will serve to further elucidate the

socio-political or cultural context of the class, and it will be of great importance to your

classmates. Dont let them down by failing to prepare the report.

Some of these are available in the UC bookstore. ALL of those are available elsewhere,

used, for much less money.

CLASS BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTATIONS:1. Be on time. Arriving late is rude and disrespectful to me and to the rest of the class.

3 late arrivals equals 1 absence.

2. Spanish is a spoken language and the only way for me to know if and when youre

speaking is if youre here in class. Therefore there is an attendance policy:

* you have 2 unexcused absences [excused absences are for College-sanctioned

events and must be accompanied by prior notification]

* after 2 absences, 1 point will be subtracted from your overall grade

* after 5 absences I reserve the right to automatically fail you, and you should drop

the class.

3. CELL PHONES OFF AND PACKED AWAY!!!

4. Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses and will be punished accordinglyF/F

for cheating on your transcript/vivisection [look it up]

DO YOUR OWN WORK! It will be painfully obvious to me, and embarrassing for you, if

you have copied something from another source and claimed it as your own. I have a

PhD in this stuff, after all.

5. NO GUM SNAPPING! It really gets on my nerves and it will probably cause me to

subconsciously hate you and lower your grade. Why risk it?

6. Please come to class prepared, or stay home. If you missed the previous class, it is

your responsibility to find out ASAP what you missed and what is due. Get the names,

numbers and emails of several classmates]. The assignments are readily available on the

blog.

7. Falling asleep in class is the same as being absent and will be penalized accordingly.

You may also be made fun of, possibly decorated, and left behind at classes end.

8. Never ever ever ask either of the following 2 questions: Did I miss anything last

class? or Did we do anything important in the last class? OF COURSE YOU DID/WE DID!!! Do you think we just sat there waiting for you to show up??It was your responsibility to find out BEFORE class what you missed.

9. I have a dry, some would say snarky, sense of humor. Get used to it.
