Let’s Get Unplugged!Spanish Fork - Salem Play Unplugged is dedicated to helping kids of all ages unplug themselves from TV, video games, and cell phones so they can re-engage with the world and enjoy a less sedentary lifestyle. However asking kids to turn off their favorite video games or television shows isn’t easy! So how in the world do you get kids to do it and do it willingly?Oft en times the best way to change behavior is to focus on the positive Rather then making this all about what your kids shouldn’t be doing watching TV, playing video games) focus on what they could be doing instead.

Th is program makes deciding what your kids could be doing so much easier. On the other hand, if you’re looking forward to a summer full of “Mom…. I’m bored“, then by all means, stop reading now.

It begins with kids who are motivated by the incentive of a highly collectable reward called a Brag Badge. Th is reward helps solve the “I’m bored” problem between kids and parents. In turn, this provides incentive for parents to help kids receive the reward by taking them to participating local businesses.

So what is a Play Unplugged Brag Badge? A Brag Badge is a plastic tag somewhat resembling a “military dog tag” that represents a Play Unplugged challenge or activity. Th e tag is given out by a local business to participants who have completed the activity.

Th e Play Unplugged Brag Badge

Each tag has been sequentially numbered and contains the title of the activity, the name of the sponsoring business, as well as a point allocation. Th e more diffi cult the activity associated to the tag, the higher the points. Th ese points can then be tracked and used in drawings, contests, etc.

Getting active has never been so much fun!Need some ideas? We’ve teamed up with businesses all over the community and have come up with 101 activities that’s sure to please even the grumpiest kid. Complete any activity and receive an official Unplugged Brag Badge. Challenge your kids to collect as many as they can before the end of summer.

Some of the ways you can earn Unplugged Brag Badges include:

• Feed the ducks at Salem Pond• Host a family BBQ• Have a picnic in a city park• Swim at Spanish Fork Water Park• Visit Spanish Fork Historical Main Street• … Plus many many more

Keep track of all your Play Unplugged Brag Badges by putting them on your very own Play Unplugged Lanyard. Don’t have a lanyard? Don’t worry, just stop by the Chamber of Commerce to pick one up.

Make sure you keep your badges and lanyards in a safe place. At the end of the summer we will have a party with prizes given to those that collect the most badges and get the most points.

Plan AheadIt all begins with giving your kids a choice. We know we know... what if they choose to play video games? It’s a risk you’ll have to take. But if you plan ahead and prepare yourself with things they could be doing rather then focusing on what they shouldn’t be doing, they just might surprise you.

Th is playbook is fi lled with all 101 Brag Tags and how to earn each one. You can also fi nd them on our website at www.spanishforksalemunplugged.com. When you visit the webpage, click “Brag Badges” on the menu. You then will be able to view all 101 brag badges . Click on them to fi nd further information in addition to what is provided here in the playbook.
