Installing Batteries

Your unit is powered by four AAA batteries.Follow these easy instructions to install orreplace them.1. Lift the battery cover on the

top right of your unit bypushing up the tab.

Follow the illustration on the back of the unitwhen installing the batteries.

2. Insert the two top batterieswith the positive terminalfacing out and the two bottombatteries with the negativeterminal facing out.Note: If the battery door does not shut,please check the position of the batteries.

3. Replace the battery cover.Warning: If the batteries wear-out completely,or if you take more than approximately a minutewhile changing the batteries, any informationthat was entered in the built-in book or bookcard will be erased. You should always keepwritten copies of your important information.

Changing the Language

Message LanguageWhen you turn on this product for the first time,you must choose the message language. Pressa for English or press b for Spanish.

The message language is the language ofprompts, help, and other messages. You canchange the message language after your initialdecision. See “Changing the Settings” to learnhow.

Entry LanguageThe entry language is the language in which youenter words at the Word Entry screen. Thisdetermines which dictionary you will use,Spanish or English.

AC Adaptor Jack: The AC/DCadaptor is in the 9 volt range within acurrent range of 200 to 300 milliam-peres.

This symbol indicates that the inner coreof the plug of an AC adaptor is negativeand that the outer part of the plug ispositive. If the symbol on your AC/DCadaptor does not match the abovesymbol, confirm its compatibility at itsplace of purchase.Speaker: The speaker is located on theback of your unit, above the book cardslot. For best results, do not cover thespeaker with your hand.

Your unit is equipped with several specialfeatures that many, but not all BOOK-MAN book cards use. To learn if you canuse the special features with a particularbook card, read its User’s Guide.

Headphone Jack: The headphonejack is designed for 3.5 mm, 35 ohmimpedance stereo headphones.Caution: Monophonic headphones willnot work with this unit.

Volume Control: The dial, locatedunder the headphone jack, controls thevolume of the speaker or headphones.

➤ Removing Book CardsWarning: Never install or remove a bookcard while your product is on. Anyinformation that was entered in the built-inbook or book card will be erased.

➤ About Screen IllustrationsSome screen illustrations in this User’sGuide may differ slightly from what you seeon screen. This does not mean that yourproduct is malfunctioning. The examples inthe English half of this manual use English asthe message language.

➤ Learn a New Word

Your dictionary comes with a Learn aWord feature to help you increaseyour Spanish or English vocabulary.Each time you turn your SpanishProfessor on, you can see a randomheadword taken from the dictionary.

If you wish to turn this feature on,press menu . Highlight and pressenter . Press enter again to select

Settings. Press or to turn thefeature on and press enter whendone.

The entry language determines thelanguage of the words you’ll beshown. For example, if Spanish is thecurrent entry language, you will beshown Spanish words with theirEnglish translations. To learn how tochange the entry language, see“Changing the Language” on page 6.

Changing the Settings Translating Spanish Words

Your Spanish Professor is fully bilingual. Trytranslating a Spanish word.

1. Press lang to change the entry lan-guage from English to Spanish, ifneeded.

2. Type a word (e.g., estudiar).To erase a letter, press back . To type ac-cents, type the letter (e.g., e) and press repeatedly until the accent you want appears(e.g., é). If you want to type an ñ, then hold

fn and press n. To type a capital, holdcap and press a letter key. To type a num-

ber, hold fn and press q-p. To type a hy-phen, hold fn and press j.

3. Press enter to view the Englishtranslation.

Press say to hear the word pronounced.Press space or to scroll.

4. Hold fn and press or toview the next or previous definition.

5. Press clear when done.

Translating Spanish Words

➤ Understanding DefinitionsDictionary entries consist of headwords,parts of speech, the translation, and/or defi-nitions. Other forms of the word may followthe headword. Capitalized words indicate thecategory for which the word is used. Afterthe translation or definition, you may see alist of usage examples.1. In the Spanish Word Entry screen,

type saber.2. Press enter .

Translating English Words

You can also use the Spanish Professor totranslate English words into Spanish.

1. Press lang to change the entrylanguage from Spanish to English,if needed.

2. Type a word (e.g., read).

To erase a letter, press back . TO typeaccents, type the letter (e.g., e) and press

repeatedly until the accent you wantappears (e.g., é). To type a capital, holdcap and press a letter key. To type a

number, hold fn and press q-p. Totype a hyphen, hold fn and press j.

3. Press enter to view the Spanishtranslation.

➤ Explanation of GendersSpanish nouns are different thanEnglish nouns in that they must eitherbe masculine or feminine. Eachdefinition of a noun indicates whichgender it is with m or f.

➤ Misspelling WordsIf you enter a misspelled word, a listof corrections appears. Highlight theword you want and then press enter

to see its dictionary entry.

➤ Choosing Multiple FormsSome words in this dictionary havemore than one form (e.g. sí, si). Whenthe word you are looking up hasmultiple forms, the different formsappear in a list.

Simply highlight the form you wantand press enter to see its dictionaryentry. For example, enter si at theSpanish Word Entry screen.

Highlight the form you want and pressenter to see its dictionary entry. To go

back to the Multiple Forms list, pressback .

Translating English Words

If you are uncertain about how to spell a word, typea question mark (?) in place of each unknown letter.To find prefixes, suffixes, and other parts of words,type an asterisk (✽) in a word. Each asterisk standsfor a series of letters. Note: If you type an asteriskat the beginning of a word, it may take a little whileto find the matching words.1. Press lang , if needed, to switch to the

Spanish Word Entry screen, if needed.2. Type a word with ?s and ✽s.

To type an asterisk, hold down cap and press?* .

3. Press enter .

4. Press to move the highlight to theword you want and press enter toview its definition.

5. Press clear when done.

Another way to look up words is by highlightingthem in dictionary entries or word lists. You canthen find their definitions or phrases, hear thempronounced, or add them to My Word List.1. At any text, press enter to start the

Conjugations show inflections, orchanges in a word’s gender, tense, etc.This dictionary includes extensive inflec-tions of nouns, verb, modifiers, and otherwords.

Read the definition to find the verb you want(e.g., to know).

4. Press conj to conjugate the head-word, saber.Highlight the part of speech you want (e.g.,verb) and press enter . Then highlight thetranslation you want (e.g., know) and pressenter .
