SPAR MACLEAN HISTORY

The Store was originally built and owned by John McLachlan in 1883 and was called the Argyle Store.  In 1890  the store was sold  to Mrs Margaret McAlpine who  renovated  the Store and put a second storey on as a residence.   Mr John Moorhead ran the store for her until 1898 when he sold out to E.C. Bishop. 

Mr Bishop ran the store very well and continually ex‐panded the products on sale to the point where he was employing 7 assistants.  He had competition in the town from 3 other stores, namely, Conlon's, Cameron's, and O'Connor's and he traded well against them.  In 1898 Mr Bishop created consider‐able interest in the town by installing the first Cash Regis‐ter in his store.  In 1910 the store was expanded consid‐erably on both sides which created a very large trading area for the store.  The river was a very important part of the history of the store as supplies arrived by boat and a lot of trade was done with deliveries being carried by boats to the customers.  The Bishop family ran the busi‐ness for the longest period in the history of the store (41 years) and eventually sold out to Leslie Wingfield in 1939.

The Wingfields also had a very long period of owning the store (33 years).  In 1969 Leslie sold the store to his son Donald who created quite a stir in the town when he removed the Drapery and Millinery departments and  turned the store into a "self serve Supermarket" in 1963.  Don remembers very clearly his father telling him that it was a mistake to change the store, as "self serve was only going to be a flash in the pan, customers will always want to be served."  In 1967 the store became a member of the Nifty Thrifty Group and in 1971 changed to the Four Square Group.  In 1972 Don sold the store to Donald Mead.Mr Mead ran the store for only 1 year and then sold to Francis & Kay Cullerton in 1973.  The Cullertons ran the store for 3 years then sold out to Terry & Cathy Seletto and Terry & Jill Malone in 1977. The Selettos & Maloneys ran the store for approximately 2 years and then sold out to Joe, Pat & Doug Jenkins in 1979.  The Jenkins were in partnership with Ian & Christine Purvis and built the business up to the point when they sold out to JC & MD Bowler & RA & JL Little in 1980.  The Store was purchased by Tavemist Pty Ltd (a shelf Company formed to provide a trading base for the Store) in December 1980.  The shareholders in the company were Joe & Muriel Bowler, Leanne & Martin Thompson and Bob & Judith Little.  It was then still operating as a Four Square Store with a very modest turnover and was known as Four Square Maclean.

In September 1984 the Store changed its Buying Group to I.G. (Independent Grocers), mainly to achieve a different image to other Four Square Stores in the area.  The Store was then known as Big River I.G. Supermarket.  In 1985 the Bowlers & Thompsons left the Company and Bob & Judith took on the running of the business by themselves. 

In April 1988 a major amalgamation of a large number of independent Supermarkets meant that I.G. did not exist any more and Foodstore was created.  The business was then known as Littles Foodstore.

In March 1997 A whole new, totally independent, buying group was then created called United Star Supermarkets.  5 Star Supermarkets is a Banner Group of United Star and this store became a member of that group

Many improvements have been added to the store to handle the increase in customer numbers.  In 1981 an entrance ramp to remove the stairs at the front of the shop.  Also in 1981 a large 7 door freezer display cabinet and back loading coolroom were installed.  1985 saw the addition of a 3rd Checkout and in 1992 Scanning checkouts were introduced.  1992 also saw the increase in the size of the Fruit & Veg section to cater to the needs of our customers.  In 1999 major renovations were carried out and effectively doubled the Stores trading area as well as providing a pleasant air conditioned environment to shop and work in.  A full serviced Delicatessen was added and all de‐partments were doubled in size. 

Early in 2007 a major refurbishment was carried out with a new Dairy Cabinet installed to replace the existing units.  Also the aging 7 Door Freezer Cabinet and ‘Coffin’ Freezer was replaced with a new state of the art 13 Door Freezer Cabinet.  This created the required room to install 2 Express Checkouts and replace the other 4 Checkouts with brand new units.  In 2008 the Fruit and Veg de‐partment was totally revamped with brand new refrigeration cabinets being installed which then instigated a major relay of the store. 

In September 2004 the business was changed from 5 Star to SPAR, an international Brand of Su‐permarkets, in line with our Banner Groups desire to present a more professional image.

2007‐2008 saw a major refurbishment of the store which involved a complete relay of the whole store as well as the upgrading of the Fruit & Veg shelving.   

March 2009 also saw the introduction of ILID labelling – this ground breaking technology is used to replace shelf labels with electronic price ticketing. 

Improvements to this business are ongoing and Bob & Judith are looking at relaying the whole store once again in the not too distant future. 

We will continue to strive to provide a state of the art shopping experience for our customers whilst still maintaing the good old fashioned principles that the business has been built on.
