“Films from the Film Noir genre contrast
sexiness with machismo and gallantry.
I have taken these elements and dressed them up
so that the polished features of the femme fatales
adorn and embellish more classic forms
from mid-century design.”

Spark Is All About The Energy That Ignites The Creative Process.
Welcome to our Film Noir production.
We invite you to travel back in time.
It is the journal of cinematic dramas not yet interpreted and
ambiguity not yet appreciated or understood. It is a celebration
not just of seduction and cynicism, but of the captivating and
mystical process that sets inspirations reeling and allows them to
form into new genres. In this issue, we explore the spark that draws
us into a world of black and white films. Film Noir. Today, these
works appeal to both film buffs and academics because of their
themes of human nature and life’s foibles. Film Noir’s distinguishing
elements of moral corruption, cynicism, tragedy, lust, despair
and greed capture the essence of these visible darker, more
venomous crime dramas.

“Between the Great Depression and the start of the Cold War, Hollywood went noir, reflecting the
worldly, weary, wised-up under current of midcentury America. In classics such as Laura,
Sweet Smell of Success, and Double Indemnity, where the shadows of L.A. and New York pulse with
killers, corpses, and perilous romance, failure is not only a logical option
but a smart-talking seduction.” – Vanity Fair, March 2007.

The Film Noir genre first made its appearance in the United States in the early 1940s and
thrived during the 1950s. These “black film” screenplays were defined by their distinctive
highly stylized, overtly theatrical expression of the dark underside of American society.
![Page 6: Spark | Film Noir | Volume 8](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022042703/568bf24b1a28ab89339624e6/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The American Film Institute described mystery films
as “the unpredictability of human nature and wrapped in
a tangle of plot twists, mysteries inhabit a world where the
secrets are dark and the agendas well hidden.”
Film Noir movies embody this definition like no other.

Movies can make us laugh and cry,
while others make a lasting
impact, touching us to the core.
But no other movie genre
intrigued us the way Film Noir did
and continues to do. With its twists and
turns and secret schemes,
Film Noir aroused our interests, desires
and curiosities like never before.

Today’s audience most often experiences
shock versus suspense when viewing films.
What is the difference you ask?
Shock is a sudden mental and/or emotional disturbance,
while suspense builds, keeping the audience on the
edge of their seats. Film Noir can most definitely
be described as constant suspense, keeping viewers
engaged and wanting for more.

Why are we
so fascinated
with Film Noir romances?
Perhaps it is the self-
destructive nature of the
characters who are overcome
with an obsessive, yet
irresistible fatal
attraction. Or maybe it
is the femme fatales’
mysterious and seductive
ways of ensnaring her men to
further her own position in
an underground world
of crime.
