The idea behind Closing the Loop was conceived during a project in Tanzania in 2010, where he saw that e-waste led to huge problems at the end of its life-cycle. As a result, he founded the company in 2012, with the mission to ensure that these devices are collected in developing countries and recycled responsibly. Closing the Loop aims for profit, but also for ‘a world where waste is not wasted’.

About Fairphone Fairphone is a social enterprise that is building a movement for fairer electronics. By making a phone, we’re opening up the supply chain and creating new relationships between people and their products. We’re making a positive impact across the value chain in mining, design, manufacturing and life cycle, while expanding the market for products that put ethical values first. Together with our community, we’re changing the way products are made. See also www.fairphone.com

About Climate-KIC Education Climate-KIC Education offers added value to Master’s and Ph.D. degree programmes at the best academic institutions across Europe as well as an annual summer school. Moreover, our pre-incubation programme “Greenhouse” helps entrepreneurs to explore their business ideas. SPARK! Lectures are community events of Climate-KIC which take place five times a year. These thought-provoking events are held by climate innovators and opinion leaders in their field and are meant to inspire and trigger fruitful discussions.

About Climate-KIC Climate-KIC is the EU’s largest public private partnership addressing climate change through innovation to build a zero carbon economy. We address climate change across four priority themes: urban areas, land use, production systems, climate metrics and finance. Education is at the heart of these themes to inspire and empower the next generation of climate leaders. We run programmes for students, start-ups and innovators across Europe via centres in major cities, convening a community of the best people and organisations. Our approach starts with improving the way people live in cities. Our focus on industry creates the products required for a better living environment, and we look to optimise land use to produce the food people need.Climate-KIC is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.
