Cultivating a Psychological Approach to Safety to Create And Sustain a World-Class Safety Culture: Introducing the “Care Factor”Without a strong, innovative and forward-thinking safety attitude, neither companies in high-risk industries nor government bodies will successfully accomplish a strong, organisation-wide safety culture. One of the most researched and respected approaches to developing an effective safety culture, is one that is grounded in psychology. Understanding the psychological, causal link between mindfulness, resilience and safety incidents, and the impact of individual motivations and attitudes on decision-making is vital to achieving complete safety awareness and safety take-up across the board.

The psychology behind safety and why people behave the way they do in the workplace is instrumental to reshaping the safety mindset of any team, in any industry. Thought-leaders in safety psychology, like Clive, have shifted their thinking from traditional safety approaches that focus on attempts to control behaviours, to a cutting-edge view of safety that centers on building trust, engagement and intrinsic motivation through the application of psychological and neurophysiological analysis, skills, and techniques. This workshop will provide all safety managers with the knowledge and skill-set to build genuine engagement and subsequent gains in safety culture and performance. Explore:

Moving from Compliance and Fear to Engagement and Trust

• Focusing on what goes right in safety, rather than traditional approach of what goes wrong

• Understanding the new perspective that people are the solution to the problem as opposed to the root cause

• Using psychology to design and execute systems to support safety innovation and performance, rather than control behaviour

Methods for Engaging Your Organisation in Safety Change

• Traditional safety practices versus evidence-based approaches

• Gaining “buy in” to all levels within your business

• Reinventing the current safety paradigms and processes to achieve a higher safety take-up across your organisation

• Key psychological skills for improving safety engagement and culture in critical risk management, incident analyses

How to Positively Influence Safety Cognition

• Cognitive limitations of the brain and skills for managing and changing thought-processes and decision-making

• Proven implementation strategies supporting this new take on safety behaviour

Taking the Next Steps Toward Total Safety in High-risk Industry

• How a psychological understanding of safety will benefit the future of organisations

• Take action now – The best way forward and initial action to take following this workshop

• A progressive way of looking at safety – Current safety practices in Australia and how they could be replaced and improved through psychology

Expert Facilitator: Clive Lloyd Director and Principal ConsultantGYST Consulting Clive has been called on by many global companies as their ‘Human Factors Technical Advisor’assisting them to improve their safety culture and performance. Driving Sustainable Cultural, Attitudinal and Behavioural Change

PLUS TWO WORKSHOPS!Plus Two Separately Bookable Full-Day Workshops on 19 & 22 October 2015

8.30 - 8.55 Registration and Morning Coffee

8.55 - 9.00 Official Welcome and Opening Remarks from the Chair

9.00 - 9.45 OPENING KEYNOTE CASE STUDYAppreciative SafetyMany organisations have successfully improved safety by focusing on the reduction and elimination of unwanted outcomes. However, a growing group of people now recognise that this focus also produces negative, tedious and dis-empowering side-effects. There is a need to ask how organisations can create a more positive approach to safety, and Daniel will discuss how safety can be about aligning strengths, and create an upward spiral of performance, energy and growth. Having founded the influential website ‘Safety Differently’, safety innovation is Daniel’s domain, and he will explore how the ideas of positive psychology and resilience engineering have been applied in practice. Discuss:• If safety was not about incidents or risks, what could it be about?• Are people the problem or solution when it comes to safety?• How can safety professionals work on the positive side of safety?

Daniel Hummerdal Safety Innovation Leader Thiess

9.45 - 10.00 Questions and Discussion

10.00 - 10.45 CASE STUDY Do we really understand what drives safety behaviour in the workplace?Current safety behavioural models are not working as well as they need to, which is why we are seeing increased exploration of human behaviours and influences on safety outcomes. Philip has been part of a team that utilised a new behavioural model based on the social and psychological sciences, and has enabled many teams to identify their own set of vital behaviours. Less safe behaviour remains the major contributor to fatalities and serious injury worldwide. Philip will discuss how by identifying behaviours and creating a multi-pronged influence strategy, workplaces can make changes for a safer work environment. Explore:• Applying the Influencer Model to analyse behaviour and understand the impact of motivation and ability, and the structural, social and personal factors at play in the workplace• How an influence strategy can drive the desired vital behaviours, and techniques for using this in practice• Lessons learned from driving behavioural change at mine sites across the globe

Philip Stephenson General Manager Health Safety Environment and Security Newcrest Mining

10.45 - 11.00 Questions and Discussion

11.00 - 11.15 Morning Tea

11.15 - 12.00 EXPERT COMMENTARYFostering accountability for safe behaviour on an individual and team levelMost of the current ideology in Health and Safety was forged by the well-meaning thinkers of the late 90’s to early 2000’s. The litigious field and quest for company, board, and statutory authority governance has caused

safety systems and programs to become overly prescriptive and cumbersome over time. This session address why organisations must start questioning the current way of going about business and accept new sciences in health and safety. With a career spanning 30 years in HSE, Kim will discuss how organisations can break out of old habits and embrace safety change, focusing on:• The rationale behind existing programs and the need for change• Challenging the accepted paradigms and entrenched norms in health and safety• Practical tools to guide professionals on the way forward in safety psychology

Kim Flanagan Managing Director New Age HSE Services

12.00 - 12.15 Questions and Discussion

12.15 - 1.15 Networking Lunch

1.15 - 2.15 INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSIONApplying psychology to influence organisation-wide behavioural and cultural changeMany high-risk industries abide by traditional safety methods which have been used in their organisations for decades, that are familiar, and which seem to have worked well thus far. However, new research has been undertaken into the way safety is conducted, and whether safety messages are effectively reaching employees. The field’s leaders are re-thinking how safety behaviour eventuates and are looking at the drivers behind safety incidents through a new lens. Panellists will discuss how psychology can be used to affect change in industries which are often resistant to new procedures and practices, exploring:• Emerging practices in safety psychology• Establishing a safety attitude that will last, long-term• The importance of authentic, felt leadership to underpin safety culture change• Looking beyond Zero Harm

Tim Fleming General Manager HSE, Australia Hub Laing O’RourkeDavid Provan General Manager Health, Safety and Environment Origin EnergyMichael Wilson Group Health Safety and Environment Director Boral

2.15 - 3.00 EXPERT COMMENTARYSuccessful integration of safety into businessTaking safety beyond the functional discipline to truly be integrated into all levels of the organisation is what sets apart zero harm and achieving a total safety culture. It is Max’s belief, based on leading research, that a majority of organisations in Australia treat safety as separate to business and as something to comply with, when safety should be embraced as a key value. By embedding safety into the core of business, organisations can effectively engage staff to eliminate all potential risks and achieve a truly safe, productive, efficient and cost-effective outcome. Discuss:• Techniques for communicating and motivating your team to share this core value• Why a productive business cannot be divorced from a safe business• Methods for cementing safety in the strategic core of the organisation

3.00 - 3.15 Questions and Discussion

3.15 - 3.30 Afternoon Tea

3.30 - 4.15 CASE STUDY Effective change management – Implementing targeted interventions to integrate safety change that sticksMany organisations have an ongoing safety culture issue that large interventions fail to address. Combining Ann’s eleven years with Sydney Trains delivering safety change projects, and Hannah’s extensive human factors experience in transportation, Hannah and Ann will discuss how change can be successfully sustained in an organisation through research rigour and the use of psychometrics and baseline measures as intervention methods. With a focus on specific Sydney Trains intervention programmes and change management, they will explore:• Successful approaches to changing the way people behave• Active safety - The importance of effective engagement to safety• Selling a new safety concept to all levels within an organisation

Ann Tucker Project Manager Sydney TrainsHannah Morgan Human Factors Professional Sydney Trains

4.15 - 4.30 Questions and Discussion

4.30 - 5.15 EXPERT COMMENTARYDisruptive safety - Challenging the prescribed safety frameworkFor decades safety success has been defined as ‘Zero Harm’, and consequently industry has interpreted zero harm as the absence of safety incidents. It is commonplace that the true measure of safety effectiveness is measured by incident frequency rate, however Kelvin will debate whether this is correct, or if the current regulatory framework is merely simple and convenient and has outlasted its purpose. He will examine how the continual improvement and disruption of safety can achieve a state of cognitive satisfaction and organisational success. Discuss:• Implementing a disruptive safety approach• Route cause analysis and questioning ‘proven methodologies’• Establishing organisational resilience through innovative safety

Kelvin Genn Company Director for Service Delivery Support and Risk Management Cater Care Group

8.55 - 9.00 Opening Remarks from the Chair

9.00 - 9.45 OPENING EXPERT COMMENTARY Methods for improving the way decisions are made under uncertaintyThose in high-risk industries often operate in uncertain conditions and must make decisions and judgements under these circumstances. Consequently, judgements are often clouded and the likelihood of false assumptions being made about a situation or course of action is increased. In these moments, irrelevant information might highlighted and the majority of people will believe it to be true. An expert in Behavioural Neuroscience, Shane will explore how grasping the core psychological workings behind decision-making can significantly improve how people and organisations perform under uncertainty. Discuss:• Essential skills for decision training• Neurophysiological factors in judgement and performance• The benefits of implementing a psychological approach to organisational safety

Dr Shane Moon Psychologist; High Performance Consultant; Expert in Behavioural Neuroscience, Eye Tracking and Decision Making Inner Truth Sport

9.45 - 10.00 Questions and Discussion

10.00 - 10.45 CASE STUDYSuccessful safety intervention boils down to conversationSafety is typically spoken about in terms of metrics – the recorded data, trends and statistics. However, a critical tool for understanding and influencing actions and decision making, is conversation. But conversation around what? With extensive experience of driving new conversations and questioning existing safety methods, David will discuss how building conversations across all levels of an organisation is an effective method to improve safety. Explore: • The art of conversation – Asking questions to access relevant information• How conversations can drive safety interventions• How organisations grow in the direction of the questions they explore • Methods for engaging your organisation in a new safety discussion

David Bond General Manager Health, Safety and Security Thiess

10.45 - 11.00 Questions and Discussion

11.00 - 11.15 Morning Tea

11.15 - 12.00 CASE STUDYFrom attitude to motivation – A new perspective on what drives safety behaviourSafety programs never completely work when they aim to appeal to human attitudes toward safety. This comes down to the fact that not all people are the same, and is in turn why organisations are not seeing one hundred per cent take-up of safety. Having implemented a safety approach focused on motivation, Dr ForsterLee will discuss how motivations for safety are essential to understanding a person’s attitude, and therefore how those attitudes drive safety behaviour. 12.15 - 1.15 Networking Lunch

1.15 - 2.00 EXPERT COMMENTARY Managing psychosocial risks in the workplaceImplementing workplace psychological health and safety programs that focus solely on wellbeing and awareness activities are likely to have limited impact on actually managing psychosocial risks in the workplace. Many leading organisations are now moving well beyond tokenistic gestures and are rightly undertaking more rigorous, systemic and strategic workplace-specific solutions in managing these risks through psychology. The question of what causes safety behaviour is increasingly being investigated through the application of psychology, and David will discuss: • The business case for investing in psychosocial risk management strategies• Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Interventions to manage psychosocial risk• Integrating psychosocial factors into traditional risk systems and frameworks

David Burroughs Managing Director CommuniCorp Group

2.00 - 2.15 Questions and Discussion

2.15 - 3.00 CASE STUDYUsing story-telling about safety to influence thinking and behaviourLong-established system and process approaches to safety have embedded a ‘comply with the rules’-based culture, and used conventional communication and messaging to reinforce those methods. Siemens has cultivated and encouraged its employees telling of stories to change the way the organisation thinks about safety, and the subsequent behaviour of its people has demonstrated this new method’s effectiveness. The impact of a different style of communication, along with other key initiatives, has underpinned measurable change in safety culture. David will explore:• Siemens’ approach to story-telling and stories told• Triumphs and challenges of embedding a new approach and lessons learned• Changes in culture that this and other strategic initiatives have driven

David Scott Head of HSE and Quality, Australia/NZ Siemens

3.00 - 3.15 Questions and Discussion

3.15 - 3.30 Afternoon Tea

3.30 - 4.30 INTERACTIVE CLOSING ROUNDTABLEImpacting change now to improve safety in the futureThe future of safety will be forged by the decisions made today. It is clear that innovation in the safety environment is the key to creating an organisational safety culture that will continue to be effective for years to come. By developing an understanding of safety psychology, managers can inspire change and positively
