SPE Delta Section February 2012

Dear SPE-Delta Section,2011 is now in the past and 2012 is here. And although the fi rst 2 weeks of this year didn’t turn-out exactly like most around here had hoped, we still had a very good 2011. And, we have a whole new calendar year in which we can set our goals, spread our wings, and attempt to soar to new heights! Whether you want to learn a new language, visit a new place, or go to night school, try to make it happen. If you want to assist with a charitable venture, work in an afternoon school program, or work with the elderly or handicapped, there are more than a few opportunities out there for you. And, if you wish to become actively involved in your Delta Section, we have multiple opportunities for you to make a difference. Below are a few of the activities and committees that are always looking for new blood. Please take a moment and look them over, and if you are interested, give me or someone else you may know on the board a call to discuss your options. I promise you won’t regret making the call!

2012 SPE Golf Tournament – held in March, major fund raiser for scholarships in the section.

2012 Deep Water Symposium – held in August, signifi cant technology transfer, also a major fund raiser for SPE, NOGS, and AADE, multiple opportunities for volunteers.

2012 Mardi Gras Gala – held in conjunction with the Deep Water Symposium, sponsored by the Young Professional Committee of the Delta section, a really wondrous celebration, hard work but very enjoyable.

Young Professionals Committee – all SPE members under 35 years of age are members of this energetic group of oil and gas professionals. If you would like to become engaged with these folks, they have numerous activities throughout the year.

Be a factor in your Society and make a difference in your life by contacting someone involved in one of the above activities and joining in the fun!

Finally, thanks to all for your support of the SPE Delta section in the Greater New Orleans area. If there are things you would like to see done in our section, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any other member of the board.

Sincerely,Charlie Mayne, P. E.Delta Section Chairman

Time for the students to get the cobwebs out as a new semester begins. We are still mourning the loss of a great football season, and we look forward to next year. A large number of Student SPE and AADE members did gather for the local AADE Christmas Social as last semester came to a close. The LSU Student

Chapter of SPE has a tremendous amount of activities planned for this session. Technical meetings scheduled include presentations from Baker Hughes, Denbury, Newfi eld,

Packers Plus, Schlumberger, and Weatherford. The community outreach activities will have several Energy4Me Presentations, The Susan G. Kormen Race for the Cure, and a team for Habitat for Humanity. Of course the students will also fi nd time for social events such as the spring crawfi sh boil, and the annual senior dinner. Our seniors are especially excited as their college careers come to an end and they look forward to their professional lives. The job prospects are very good, and we look forward to welcoming them into the industry. That’s all for now. Geaux Tigers!

SPE CONTINUING EDUCATIONProfessional Ethics for Petroleum EngineersBy John Rogers Smith, Louisiana State University

Monday, February 27, 2012Conference Room - TBA • 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Chevron Building • 100 Northpark Blvd. • Covington$25.00 per person

RSVP at http://www.spe-delta.org or Contact Steve Moore, (985) 773-7062 • [email protected] of Presentation and Seminar:

This presentation and seminar is intended to give participants an introduction to the concept of, and guidelines for, professional ethics in the practice of petroleum engineering. This subject is of clear relevance in improving the public perception of our industry and preserving our indi-vidual personal and professional integrity. We believe the discussion will be of interest to all participants because we all encounter situations where the potential for confl icts of interest, limitations of technical competence, or compromises between professional judgment and economic or political forces arise. The formal presentation will begin with a review of ethical guidelines from some of the professional societies and boards. It will continue with some examples of the kinds of ethical questions that arise in actual practice of drilling, production, completion, reservoir, and environmental control engineering. We will discuss these examples and the resulting challenges that are inherent in implementing good ethics from the different perspectives of a consultant, an industry employee, and a supervisor. The ethics discussion will fulfi ll the requirement of one full hour (1-PDH) of continuing education on ethics for registered professional engineers.

Speaker Biography:John Rogers Smith is an associate professor and holds a Campanile Professorship at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and is a regis-tered, professional Petroleum Engineer in Louisiana. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from UT Austin and a MS and Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from LSU. He has over twenty years of industry experience in drilling, production, research, and reservoir activities. At LSU, John teaches courses on drilling engineering and prevention of oil and gas blowouts as well as other drilling and production related topics. John is a life member of SPE and helps to coordinate continuing education activities for the SPE-Delta section.

Dear Colleagues:On behalf of the Sixteenth Annual Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Technical Symposium program committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to share your best recent experience / fi ndings applicable to Deepwater E&P operations with your peers across the industry. The Symposium is held every August and is a joint effort between the American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE), the Delta Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and the New Orleans Geological Society (NOGS). The symposium is now in its 16th year and is once again set for the Riverside Hilton in New Orleans this year on Wednesday August 15th and Thursday August 16th.In my opinion this is the premier Deepwater Technical Symposium focused on the Gulf of Mexico. Last year’s event attracted over 460 industry professionals and over 90 students from across the spectrum of technical disciplines that enable Deepwater oil and gas development. These attendees are a mixture of staff from oil & gas companies, service companies and students from universities across the gulf coast. More information for this event is available through the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Technical Symposium website www.deepwaternola.org. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Deepwater 2012 R3 - Renewal – Responsibility – Research”. The overall goal of the symposium is to share knowledge, best practices, new technologies, and improvements to existing technologies with a focus on case studies. If you would like to present at the symposium an abstract of your presentation is due by Friday, April 27, 2012. Since you have the option to decline publication of your presentation materials the symposium presents a unique opportunity to share and learn from each other freely. The technical sessions will include approximately 45 presentations covering a wide array of topics covering: • Emerging Technologies • GeoScience • Reservoir Engineering & Economics • HS&E & Regulatory • Drilling Technology • Production Systems • Completion Technology • Pipelines & Infrastructure* Click on any of the session links on the website www.deepwaternola.org to submit the papers to the respective session chairs.Luncheons will feature keynote speakers and the Symposium ends with a panel discussion currently targeted on the Deepwater permit process. A dedicated exhibit hall with contractor presentations will be available for participants. Last year over 30 companies exhibited Deepwater technology at the symposium. There will also be Student Poster/Paper sessions.Submittal Process ○ Obtain necessary clearance from your management, and start preparing now ○ Abstracts must be received by Friday, April 27th, 2012 ○ Use the appropriate link on the website www.deepwaternola.org to submit your paper ○ Please note that, if accepted, you will be required to submit the presentation to the session chairs by August 3, 2012. Authors who do not

submit a presentation by the due date will be withdrawn from the program and not allowed to present. For more information write to any of the program committee members contact info is available on the website www.deepwaternola.org.

Delta YP’s:

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed your holidays. With the New Year comes the perfect time to re-evaluate your career development goals. Are you looking for opportunities to work collaboratively with other industry Young Professionals from a wide variety of companies (Shell, Chevron, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger, BOEM, etc.)? How about gaining valuable skills that come with facilitating networking and professional growth among members with fewer than 10 years experience in the industry? If so, consider volunteering on the SPE-Delta Young Professionals Program Board!

The team consists of 12 people and many of the SPE events in our area are sponsored by YPP, including the Annual Masquerade Gala & Silent Auction held during the Deepwater Symposium in August. While all of the Chair positions are currently fi lled for the 2011-2012 year, we are looking for volunteers to help on sub-committees for the Social Networking, Technical Programs, Community Service and Continuing Education teams.

Helping with the YP Board is extremely fl exible, allowing you to contribute around your schedule. And most importantly, serving on the team is a lot of fun!

If you’re interested in helping on the team this year, or if you’d like to learn more about the opportunities available, please contact me!

Warm Regards,Myrtle-RoseSPE-YPP Chairman, [email protected](504) 728-8257
