ECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS - COMMERCIAL ESCALATORS
1.00 SCOPE OF WORK
The complete supply, delivery, installation (including all the associated skilled/unskilled labor and the
hire of any mobile cranes for offloading purposes) testing and commissioning of 2 escalators.
2.00 DUTY OF ESCALATORS
The escalators shall be proven in use in a commercial environment (e.g. shopping center or office
building) and shall be capable of operating continuously for a period of 12 to 16 hours for 7 days a
week throughout the year.
The escalator components shall be designed to offer a service life of min. 100,000 hours without
replacement of major parts.
3.00 OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
he escalator shall be equipped and configured for indoor usage.
4.00 DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION
The tenderershall be required to visit thesite and establish anarea foroffloading the escalators and a
feasible route for installation of the escalators from the offloading area to their final location.
The tenderershall submitwith his tender full details of all thework necessary to enable such a route to
be established.
5.00 GENERAL SPECIFICATION - CODE COMPLIANCES
The whole of the equipment shall be in accordance with the latesteditionof EN 115:1995. It shall also
be in accordance with the requirements of this specificationwhere these requirements exceedthoseof
he EN standard.
he supplier shall be ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified.
5.01 RUSS
The escalator trusses shall be designed to accommodate the loadings and factors referred to in the
latest edition of EN 115. The trusses shall not deflect greater than 1:750 of the distance between
supports under a live uniformly distributed passenger loading of 5 kN/m² (load area = width of
escalator step x distance between supports). The truss shall be designed to accommodate the load
without intermediate (center) supports if the vertical rise is below 6 m.
The trusses shall be constructed of rolled steel sections, continuously welded where appropriate, and
reated with an approved rust inhibitor.
The trusses shall include all the frames, supports and reinforcements necessary for the support and
fastening of the mechanical parts of the escalators.

There shall be no cross members on the soffit of the truss, either inside or outside. The soffit plate
shall be 4 mm minimum thickness and welded and sealed to ensure it is oil tight.
All the necessary steelwork, trimming angles and bearing plates to support the escalators from the
building structure are to be provided and fitted by the building contractor.
The truss supports at each end shall be provided with isolation (anti-vibration) pads, which dampen
ibration and prevent structure-borne noise being transmitted to the building structure.
5.02 ESCALATOR DRIVE
The drive unit is locatedoutside thestepband, atthe upper end of the escalator. The chain sprockets
of the step band and the handrail driving wheels are driven via a duplex chain by a compact worm
gear with an electric motor, flange-mounted at the gearbox. The main driving shaft supports the chain
sprockets for the step band. The main driving shaft supports the handrail driving shaft via handrail
chain and handrail wheels. The drive system assures that the handrails are moved synchronouslywith the step band.
5.03 DRIVE MOTOR
The drive motor shall be continuously rated and of adequate size for the duty concerned in both
directions of travel. The drive shall be positive and quiet.
he tenderer shall include details of the motor within the tender.
The tenderer shall include within the tender a list of protection provided, which shall preferably be by
means of temperature sensitive devices in the motor windings with a magnetically operated overload
device to cater forstall conditions. The motorshall be provided with class F insulationand a minimum
ingress protection class of IP21.
5.0 BRAKE
The escalator shall have a "fail-safe"operational braking systemwhich shall be capable of bringing an
unloaded and loaded escalator to rest within the stopping distances given in the latest edition of EN
115 and maintaining it in a stationary position. The action of the brake shall be smooth so that the
step band is brought to a standstill without subjecting the passengers to sudden deceleration forces.
he brake shall be held off electrically and applied by spring pressure.
For escalators over 6 m vertical rise and/or which are subject to the "public service" requirements of
EN 115, an auxiliary brake shall be provided. This must be directly coupled to the main drive shaft of
he escalator.
Provision shall be made for the temporary release of the brake by means of a manually operated
release lever.
The escalator shall stop automatically in the event of the operation of any safety device or electrical
power failure.
Each escalator shall have the facility to lock the step band in position to enable work to be carried out
safely within the step band.

5.05 HANDRAIL DRIVE
To ensure the handrail runs synchronously with the step band, within a speed tolerance of 0% to 2%,
a chain from the main drive shaft to the handrail shaft shall be used.
A positivedriveandproper tensioning of the handrail shall be achieved atall times. At the newel endsthere shall be adequate sized rollers to guide the handrail around the newels. Each roller shall be
fitted with sealed ball bearings and be grease lubricated.
5.06 HANDRAILS
The endless rubber handrails shall be pre-stretched and provided with a nylon lining on the running
faces and suitably reinforced with steel or cord tension members to enhance service life. The
minimum breaking strength of the handrails shall be 27 kN.

5.07 STEP CHAINS
The step chains shall be specifically designed for escalator applications and be of the roller type with
heat-treated links to satisfy the requirements of the newels version of EN115.
In the interests of the environment and fire prevention, the step chains shall be of the sealed-for-life,
lubrication-free type which require no external oil lubrication. The links, pins and bushes shall be
suitably treated to prevent corrosion (e.g. zinc plated).
5.08 STEP CHAIN TENSION CARRIAGE
step chain tension device shall be provided in an easily accessible position in the lower machine pit.
The tension carriage assembly shall be mounted on rollers with adequate lateral guidance to prevent
skewing and shall be fitted with adjustable pressure springs to ensure uniform tensioning of the step
chains.
5.09 STEPS
The silver painted steps shall be of an interchangeable design of rigid high tensile die cast aluminum,
incorporating grooved tread plates and risers, and shall be capable of being removed and replaced
without removing the skirtings or inside balustrade. Multi-piece step assemblies are not acceptable.
The step rollers shall have sealed ball bearings which are permanently grease lubricated. The steps
are of distortion-resistant design, made of high tensile, die-cast aluminium. The tread plates have
narrow grooves. The inner width between the cleats is 5.7 mm (average). Similar to the tread plate,
the step riser is grooved vertically. Each step is provided with two step rollers of 75 mmdiameter with
encased, sealed-for-life ball bearings.
5.10 STEP COMBS
Step combs shall be manufactured fromyellow plastic and be easily replaceable. The escalator must
incorporate step guides of wear-resistant material to ensure precise lateral entrance of the step into

Safety contacts shall be fitted to the comb plate, acting both vertically and horizontally, to stop the

escalator in the event of an object becoming entrapped between the steps and the combs.
5.11 SKIRTINGS
Rigid sheet steel skirting panels with a minimumthickness of 3 mm shall be provided adjacent to the
steps. They shall be coated with a black long-wearing friction reduction compound and adequatelysupported to prevent bending or deflection.
Flexible skirting panels with micro-switches shall not be accepted.
5.12 BRUSH GUARDS
Single brush guards shall be provided to protect the step/skirting gap. They shall follow the nose line
of the steps, running continuously throughout the length of the moving step band and terminating 50
mm before the comb plates at both ends. At each end of the brush guard there shall be a smooth
tapered aluminum leading piece to ensure that there are no sharp edges, which may be a hazard to
passengers. The holder/basis shall be made of black anodized aluminum.
5.13 FLOOR COVER PLATES
Single panel covers of steel/aluminum construction shall be provided at the escalator entrances,
covered with stainless steel with punched diamond pattern, black painted. The covers shall be
removable for maintenance purposes.
5.1 BALUSTRADES
The balustrades shall be of clear toughened glass of the impact resistant type. Their minimum
thickness shall be 10 mm and the panels shall be self-supporting without the need for mullions. The
panels shall be separated into standard lengths with the joints arranged at right-angles to the
handrails. The vertical height of the balustrade, both on the incline and the ends, shall be min. 900
mm.
Passenger fall protectionbarriers are to be installed outside the balustrades atboth ends of the unit for
additional protection to prevent passengers falling over the balustrade of the unit. They should be
made of toughened glass panels, with a stainless steel support bracket and a stainless steel fixing
base. The additional barrier height should be 1300 mm.
5.15 FINISHES
The inner/outer decking shall be of brushed stainless steel. The joints of all sections shall be of the
flush butted type.
5.16 OPERATIONAL MODE
The escalator shall run continuously, but shall reduce its speed after a pre-selected time if no
passengers are detected. If no passenger enters the escalator after an adjustable time, the escalator
stops. If a passenger is then detected, the unit re-accelerates or restarts in the pre-selected direction.
The reduced speed (stand-by-speed) shall beapproximately 40% of thenominal speed. Details of the
required speed, nominal and stand-by speed are shown in Schedule No.1 - Escalator Particular
Specification. The pre-selected direction must be visible via traffic lights; green and red colors are
required. Details of the traffic lights shall be provided with the tender.
5.17 SAFETY DEVICES

he escalators shall be equipped with the following safety devices and features:
5.17.1 - Emergency stop buttons for passengers in the top left and bottom right handrail inlet front
plates.
5.17.2 - Auxiliary brake is standard for units above 6 m vertical rise and is available as an option for
nits below 6 m.
5.17.3 - Broken step chain (chain tension) switches in the return station which stop the escalator in
case of failure of the step chain.
5.17.4 - Finger protection with contact at the handrail inlet at the balustrade heads.
5.17.5 - Comb plate impactdevice switches which stop the escalator in case objects become trapped
between the comb teeth and the moving step band.
5.17.6 - Step lowering device to switch off the escalator in the event of a step being lowered more
han 5 mm from its correct path.
5.17.7 - Step return guards at both top and bottom ends to provide protection to/from the step band.
5.17.8 - A locking device, with mechanical and electrical protection, to lock the step band in position
for when it is necessary to work within the step band.
5.17.9 - Speed sensor system, which electronically monitors the motor for over/under speeds and
step band reversal.
5.17.10 - Motor thermal protection for temperature monitoring.
5.17.11 - Main switch with thermal and magnetic release.
5.17.12 - Stopswitchesforengineers’usewithinupperandlowerendpits.
5.17.13 - Sockets for inspection use installed in the upper and lower machine compartments.
5.17.14 - Brush-type skirting deflectors to protect the gap between the skirting panels and the sides of
he step treads.
5.17.15 - ccess cover contacts.
5.17.16 - Handrail speed monitor.
5.17.17 - Missing step monitor.
5.17.18 - Diagnostic display.
5.18 WIRING
This includes the laying of all cables and conductors from the main circuit breaker in the control
cubicle to the individual controls, lighting, and safety devices inside the escalator.
All the electrical installation material must be suitable for humid conditions. The cables, switching

elements and electrical devices must be in accordance with CENELEC harmonized standards HD 21
and HD 22.
5.19 CONTROL SWITCHES
he control switch shall be mounted at the lower end of the escalator and shall be key operated.
5.20 BEARINGS
All bearings of rotating shafts are to be of a high quality, high precision and self aligning, and ball or
roller type as appropriate.
All bearings are to be selected to give, under an appropriate load profile for applications, a minimum
calculated design life of 100,000 hours (L10h) based on the ISO definition of life rating.
5.21 LUBRICATION
The tenderer shall define the method of lubrication and state by what means oil and other debris are
removed from the escalators at periodic intervals.
Where a drive chain is used to couple the drive unit to the main drive shaft, an electronic automatic
lubricationsystemshallbeprovidedwithsufficientoilcapacityforatleastonemonth’soperation.
5.22 NOTICES/SIGNS
wo notices per escalator shall be provided by the escalator sub-contractor depicting the following:
Small children must be held firmly
Dogs must be carried
Stand facing the direction of travel: Keep feet away from sides
Hold moving handrails.
Whenever possible these notices shall be in pictograph form in accordance with the requirements of
EN 115.
he above notices shall be fitted on site by other parties.
6.00 DOCUMENTATION
6.01 DRAWINGS
The drawing provided for the purpose of tendering shows typical escalators. It is appreciated that
dimensions could vary as far as the size of the upper and lower compartments are concerned. A
dimensional drawing shall be submitted with the tender to indicate the size required by the unit
included in the tender, together with all structural openings, and details of structural supports etc.
6.02 RECORDS
The tenderer shall supply two sets of record drawings and operating manuals on completion of the
installation.
6.03 ECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS

The tenderer shall supply illustrated and technical publications relating to the equipment offered and
any additional information requested within this document when submitting his tender.
7.00 SERVICING
The tenderer shall include 12 months of fully comprehensive service, commencing upon handover of the escalator to the employer. This shall include preventative maintenance, lubrication and
replacement of any worn or defective components.
The tenderer shall specify the costs for providing a 10-year fully comprehensive service contract
following the 12 months warranty servicing period. This contract shall be payable annually and shall
be only adjusted in accordance with the appropriate indices published by the national elevator and
escalator trade associations.
8.00 WARRANTY
A 1-year manufacturer’s warranty shall be provided, commencing upon handover of the escalator tohe owner.

10.00 ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES
A 50Hz, 380V, 220V supply shall be provided by other parties. This supply shall be terminated in a
unction box, adjacent to the control cabinet, and be used for the main motive power required.
The tenderer shall detail the load requirements of each supply and the preferred locations of theincoming cables at the time of tender.
