Cat 3176C ATAAC Engine. The innovativeCat 3176C diesel engine delivers large-engine performance from a compactengine design. The six-cylinder engineis turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled.With high displacement and low ratedspeed, this engine provides excellentfuel economy and durability that cansignificantly reduce operating costs.

Variable Horsepower (VHP) and VHPPlus. Automatically increases horsepowerin higher gears when the machine canuse it. In lower gears where tractionis limited, horsepower is limited,reducing wheel slip and conservingfuel. In applications such as snowremoval, this power allows highertravel speeds and faster snow removalfor more snow clearing in less time.Also, the higher rimpull in all gears

maximizes performance during high-speed winging and heavy snow loadapplications.

• The 143H has a VHP Plus optionto provide additional horsepowerin forward gears 7-8.

Lugging Performance. High torqueoutput and torque rise make the 3176Cvery responsive. Its superior luggingmaintains consistent grading speedswithout the need to downshift.

Fuel Efficiency. Caterpillar® state-of-the-art electronically controlled, unitinjection fuel system uses high injectionpressures for complete fuel combustion,efficient fuel use, and reduced emissions.The dual-filter system reducescomponent wear.

Turbocharged and Air-To-AirAftercooled. Turbocharger packsmore dense air into the cylinders formore complete combustion and loweremissions, improving performanceand engine efficiency. These benefitsare especially useful at high altitudes.Air-to-air aftercooler reduces smokeand emissions by providing cooler inletair for more efficient combustion. Thisalso extends the life of the piston ringsand bore.

Extended Engine Life. The large bore-stroke design and conservative powerrating minimize internal stresses andincrease component life. The lowengine speeds reduce engine wearand sound levels.

Hydraulic Demand Fan. The hydraulicdemand fan control automaticallyadjusts cooling fan speed accordingto engine cooling requirements. Thissystem reduces demands on the engine,putting more power to the ground andimproving fuel efficiency.

Caterpillar Engine Oil. It is formulatedto optimize engine life and performanceand is strongly recommended for usein Cat diesel engines. The engine oilchange interval is increased to 500 hours.

Improved Torque. Power curvescustomized for the 143H increasepeak torque for higher ground speedsand enhanced productivity. Rimpullhas been increased in all gears forgreater productivity.

Emissions Compliant. The new 143Hhas reduced NOx, hydrocarbon, andparticulate emissions. The Cat 3176Cmeets or exceeds all U.S. EPA Tier 2and EU Stage II emissions controlstandards worldwide.

Power Shift Transmission. Designedand built specifically for Cat motorgraders, the rugged transmissionprovides on-the-go, full-power shifting,as well as inching capability.

Direct Drive. Delivers superior fuelefficiency and “feel” of blade loads,material hardness, and ground speed.

Gear Selection. Eight forward and sixreverse speeds offer a wide operatingrange for maximum flexibility. Fourgears below 10.3 km/h (6.4 mph) matchworking speed to job conditions formaximum productivity in earthmovingjobs. Gears five, six, and seven areoptimal for efficient snow removaloperations. Gear eight is designedfor roading.

Electronic Transmission Control.Produces easy, smooth shifts to maintainuniform surfaces during shifting andextends transmission life by reducingstress on transmission clutches. A singlelever controls direction, gear, and theparking brake.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.ECPC smoothes shifts and improvesinching control, which increases operatorcomfort and productivity. It uses inputfrom the transmission and operatorcontrols to modulate the directionalclutches and produce consistent shifting.

Electronic Overspeed Protection.The transmission control upshiftsthe transmission to relieve overspeedconditions. The transmission controlwill also prevent a downshift untilmachine speed is within the range forthe requested gear. This can preventdamage and reduce component wear.

Inching Pedal. Delivers precise controlof machine movements in any gear withlow pedal effort and excellent modulation,which is critical in close-quarter workor finish grading. A new pedal designand location improves modulation andoperator comfort.

Optional Autoshift. Improves ease ofoperation and maximizes productivityby automatically shifting the transmissionat optimal shift points.

Dual Certified Air Tanks. Supply brakingcapacity to each side of the machine.This system ensures secondary brakingcapability in the event a failure occursin a single brake line. The dual airsystem also has a large reserve forstalled-engine braking.

Brakes. Caterpillar multi-disc brakesoffer a large surface area for dependable,extended-life braking. The air-actuatedservice brakes, located in each of thefour wheel spindle housings, are sealed,adjustment free, and lubricated andcooled by tandem housing oil. Theparking/emergency brakes, located inthe transmission on the output shaft, arespring actuated and air pressure released.When engaged, they neutralize thetransmission and lock the wheels onany surface.

Load Sensing Hydraulics. A loadsensing variable displacement pumpand the advanced proportional prioritypressure-compensating (PPPC, or“triple-PC”) hydraulic valves providesuperior implement control and enhancedmachine performance and efficiency.Continuously matching hydraulic flowand pressure to power demands createsless heat and reduces power consumption.

Implement Control Valves. PPPC valveshave different flow rates for the head androd ends of the cylinder. This ensuresconsistent extension and retractionproperties for each cylinder and improvesoperator “feel” and system response,ultimately reducing operator fatigue.All control valves use lock valves tomaintain blade settings. Line relief valvesprotect cylinders from excessive pressure.

Balanced Flow. Hydraulic flow isproportioned to ensure all implementsoperate simultaneously. If demandexceeds pump capacity, all cylindersare reduced by the same ratio. Theresult is improved productivity invirtually any application.

Blade Float. Blade float, incorporatedinto the blade lift control valves, allowsthe blade to move freely under its ownweight. By floating both cylinders, theblade can follow the contours of theroad when removing snow. Floatingonly one cylinder permits the toe ofthe blade to follow a hard surface whilethe operator controls the slope with theother lift cylinder.

Independent Oil Supply. Large separatehydraulic oil supply prevents cross-contamination and provides proper oilcooling, which reduces heat build-upand extends component life.

Heavy Duty XT™ Hose. Caterpillar hosetechnology allows high pressures formaximum power and reduced downtime,and intelligent routing minimizesexposure to damage.

Optional Hydraulic Lockout.Mechanically locks all moldboard,machine, and attachment controllevers during machine roading.This prevents implements from beingaccidentally engaged when the motorgrader is travelling down the road.

Blade. Heat treated moldboard rails,through-hardened, curved DH-2steel cutting edge and end bits, andreplaceable metallic wear insertsassure a long, reliable service life.Three sideshift mounting locations forthe optional moldboard add flexibility.

Blade Positioning. The blade linkagedesign provides extensive moldboardpositioning, most beneficial in mid-range bank sloping and in ditch cuttingand cleaning.

Blade Angle. A long wheelbase allowsthe operator to obtain an aggressivemoldboard angle. This aggressive anglepermits material to roll more freelyalong the blade, which reduces powerrequirements. This is particularly helpfulin handling very dry materials, cohesivesoils, snow, and ice.

Circle Construction. One-piece forgedcircle with hydraulically driven motorstands up to high stress loads. Raisedwear surfaces prevent circle teeth wearagainst the drawbar. Sixty-four uniformlyspaced teeth on the front 240° of thecircle are flame cut and heat inductionhardened to resist wear. And the circle,with 360° rotation, is secured to thedrawbar by six vertically and horizontallyadjustable shoes for maximum support.

Replaceable Wear Items. Tough,durable nylon composite wear insertsare located between the drawbar andcircle, and between the support shoesand circle. This sacrificial wear systemhelps keep components tight for finegrading and allows easy replacement.These inserts reduce rotational friction,resulting in extended component life.

Circle Drive Slip Clutch. This standardfeature protects the drawbar, circle,and moldboard components fromshock loads when the blade encountersimmovable objects. It also reduces thepossibility of the grader making abruptdirectional changes in poor tractionconditions.

Drawbar Construction. The Y-framedrawbar is constructed of two solidbeams for high strength and optimumdurability, as well as precise bladingcontrol. And the yoke plate completelycovers the top of the circle.

Blade Lift Accumulators. These optionalblade lift accumulators absorb verticalshocks encountered when the moldboardcontacts immovable objects. This optionis especially useful in rough gradingand rocky areas.

Integrated Bumper. The integratedbumper ties the rear frame togetherinto a cohesive unit to provide a solidplatform for the new 3176C powertrain. This is especially important inripping or snow removal applicationswhere graders are equipped with snowwing attachments.

Rear Frame. Rear frame has two box-sectioned channels integral with a fullywelded differential case for a solidworking platform.

Front Frame. Continuous top and bottomplate construction provides consistencyand strength. The flanged box sectiondesign removes welds from highstress areas, improving reliabilityand durability, and increasing resalevalues for the customer.

Service Center. A “Service Center”on the left-hand side provides easy,centralized access to most check andmaintenance points. Routine inspectionand service are faster and easier,providing better machine availabilityand lower operating costs.

• Large hinged doors provide easyaccess to the adjacent engine andmaintenance service compartments.

• Engine and hydraulic oil checkpoints,coolant gauges, and air filters

• Spin-on filters for oils, fuel, andcoolant

• Remote lubrication points, purgevalves, and ecology drain lines

• Fuse panel with new automotivestyle fuses located inside cab

• Tandem oil checkpoint is convenientlylocated between the wheels in thecenter of the tandem.

• Sample ports for engine, hydraulicand transmission fluids, coolant,and fuel encourage preventivemaintenance and diagnosticslike the S•O•S program.

Fuel Tank. The 397 L (105-gallon)ground-level fuel tank allows longerwork shifts and reduces refuelingfrequency. An easily accessiblefuel tank sediment drain enablesthe operator to remove sedimentaccumulation, reducing the riskof fuel system damage.

Extended Oil Change Interval. Operatea full 500 hours between engine oiland filter changes, 4000 hours betweenhydraulic oil changes, and 6000 hoursbetween engine coolant changes. Thisreduces downtime and operating expense.

Cat XT Hose. Caterpillar XT hosetechnology allows high pressures formaximum power and reduced downtime.Hoses are securely routed to minimizeexposure to damage.

O-Ring Face Seals. Cat O-ring faceseals assure rock-solid connections thatmaintain pressure and reduce oil leaks.Intelligent hose routing minimizesexposure to damage, increasing hoselife and enhancing reliability.

Radiator Cleanout Access. Radiatorclean-out access gives the operator theability to clear away debris and othermaterials that build up around theradiator. This ensures that the radiatorfunctions properly, keeping the enginecool and increasing component life.

Comfort and Convenience. Comfortand convenience are designed intoevery feature of the operator’s station.

Autoshift Transmission. Improvesease of operation and maximizesproductivity by automatically shiftingthe transmission at optimal shift points.

Optimized Inching Modulation. The newElectronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC) optimizes inching modulationand smoothes shifting. It also eliminatescable control, improving reliability, andenhances cold oil characteristics.

All-Wheel Drive. Using the rockerswitch on the transmission console, theoperator can choose from three operatingmodes — automatic, manual, or off.The torque control lever allows theoperator to control the aggressiveness ofthe front wheels in both active modes.

Electronic Throttle Control. ETC provideseasier, more precise, more consistentthrottle operation. Two modes on asingle switch offer flexibility for varyingapplications and operator preference.Like cruise control, ETC improvesfuel efficiency.

Electronic Monitoring System. Powerfulmonitoring and diagnostic capabilitiesallow more efficient and safer machineoperation. The Cat EMS III keepsoperators better informed of machinestatus with:

• Continuous tracking of all criticalmachine parameters on a dash display

• Warnings/alerts for abnormalconditions

• Retrieval or adjustment of over200 vehicle system parameters usingthe powerful Cat ET service tool

Controls on Steering Console. Controlsand switches are located on the steeringconsole, shift console, and right cabpost, all within easy reach. Gauges arelocated inside the cab, directly in frontof the operator.

Backlit Controls. Rocker switchesand transmission shifter are backlitfor nighttime operation.

Optional Air Conditioner/Heater.The optional heater and air conditionerarrangements help create a comfortablework environment. The high-capacitysystems dehumidify air and pressurizethe cab, while circulating fresh air andsealing out dust. Multiple additional ventsevenly distribute air throughout the cabfor clear windows and operator comfort.

Exceptional Visibility. A redesignedoperator’s console improves forwardvisibility. Large side windows allowa clear view of the moldboard heeland tandem tires. A wide rear windowand tapered engine hood provide agood view to the rear of the machine.Moving the air dryer and air cleaner,and aligning the precleaner and muffler,improves visibility to the rear of themachine. Operators can work moreconfidently and efficiently.

Constant Net Horsepower. This exclusivesystem increases horsepower in all gearswhen all-wheel drive is engaged. Theadditional horsepower compensates forpower redirected to hydraulic pumpsand front motors. The system deliversa smooth constant net horsepower inall gears, delivering more power tothe ground.

Superior Traction. All-wheel driveimproves tractive performance in poorunderfoot conditions such as snow, mud,and sand. This feature also providesexcellent steering and sidedraft control.

More Power. The Variable Horsepowerfeature is standard on the 143H. Whenall-wheel drive is engaged, VariableHorsepower kicks in and deliversmaximum power in all gears via anelectronically controlled variabledisplacement piston pump drivendirectly from the transmission.

Wide Working Range. All-wheel isdrive available in gears 1-7 forwardand 1-5 reverse, making it effectivein both low-speed and high-speedapplications — from ditch cutting tosnow winging. Electronically controlleddual displacement wheel motors deliverhigh displacement in gears 1-4 forwardand 1-3 reverse, and low displacementin gears 5-7 forward and 4-5 reverse.Front wheels freewheel in 8 forwardand 6 reverse.

Three Operating Modes. Three operatingmodes are available — automatic, manual,or off. The operator selects the operatingmode using a rocker switch on thetransmission console.

• Automatic mode makes the all-wheel drive feature easy to use.It automatically increases torque tothe front wheels as rear wheel slipincreases. The operator controls theresponsiveness of the front wheelby adjusting the torque control lever.The farther forward the lever, themore rapidly front wheel torque willincrease as slip increases. This modeprovides power to the front wheelsonly when needed, which reduceshydraulic system heat and lowerspower consumption. It also allowsthe operator to focus all his attentionon his work.

• Manual mode gives the operator100 percent control. He adjusts thetorque control lever to set a constanttorque level to the front wheels. Hecan make torque setting adjustmentsas operating conditions change.There are many situations wherean operator may want to controlthe front wheels independent ofrear wheel slip such as when tryingto remove a machine from a snowdrift; when making a tight turn onsnow, mud, or sand; or when workingon a side slope.

Quiet Cab. The resiliently mountedengine and transmission reduce interiorengine noise and vibration to less than81 dB(A), measured according toISO 6394. With the sound suppressiongroup, interior sound levels do notexceed 72 dB(A), measured accordingto ISO 6394. Lower interior noise levelsimprove operator working conditions.

Quiet Machine. Exterior sound levelsare under 110 dB(A), measuredaccording to ISO 6395. The soundsuppression group lowers exteriorsound levels below 107 dB(A),complying with the EU 2000/14/EC.This quiet operation lets the 143Hwork with minimal disturbance tothe surroundings.

Low Emissions. The 143H MotorGrader is even more environmentallyfriendly than its predecessors withreductions in NOx, hydrocarbon, andparticulate emissions. It complies withall U.S. EPA Tier 2 and EU Stage IIemissions control standards worldwide.

Fuel Efficient. Caterpillar state-of-the-artelectronically controlled, unit injectionfuel system has high injection pressurefor complete fuel combustion, increasedfuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.

Dry Machine. Lubricant fill points andfilters are designed to minimize spillage.O-ring face seals, Cat XT hose, andCat hydraulic cylinders protectagainst leaks.
