Torque Converter. The D6N single-stagetorque converter efficiently responds tochanging load conditions by providingtorque multiplication, therefore increasingdrawbar pull. It provides protection tothe drive train components by preventingshock loads from heavy dozingapplications. The torque converter isefficiently matched to the power traincomponents and provides the superiorperformance you need.

Auto-Shift/Auto-Kickdown. Auto-shiftallows the operator to pre-select aforward and reverse gear for easy,efficient directional changes.

Auto-shift settings include:

• First forward to second reverse.

• Second forward to second reverse.

• Second forward to first reverse.

Auto-kickdown allows the transmissionto automatically downshift whensignificant load increases are detected.

Transmission. The proven planetarypowershift transmission featuresthree speeds forward and three speedsreverse and utilizes large diameter,high capacity, oil cooled clutches.To maximize the life of the transmission,the planetary design distributes loadsand stresses over multiple gears.

• Controlled throttle shifting regulatesengine speed during high-energydirectional shifts for smootheroperation and longer component life.

• The transmission and bevel gear setare modular by design, and easilyslide into the machine’s rear case,even with the ripper installed.

Steering Clutch and Brakes. Oil cooled,hydraulically actuated, large diameterplates and clutch discs provide highertorque capacity and increased service life.

Elevated Final Drive. Final drives areisolated from ground and work toolinduced impact loads for extendedpower train life.

Steering and Transmission Controls.The D6N offers both Differential Steeringand Finger Tip Controls for steering.Both systems deliver the control theoperators need for all applications.Soft touch buttons located on the steeringcontrols shift the electronicallycontrolled transmission.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The D6N has an additional transmissionshifting feature for added performanceand operator comfort – the ElectronicClutch Pressure Control (ECPC).This unique feature provides smoothershifting by regulating and modulatingthe individual clutches based on currentoperating conditions.

Drive TrainRugged, durable and reliable components deliver smooth, responsive power andlasting reliability.

Tiller Bar Control System. The tiller barcontrol system allows for simultaneouscomfortable, one-handed steering,direction and transmission control.

• The differential steering tiller barhas easy touch shift buttons forupshifts and downshifts.

• The tiller bar is easily pushedforward to steer the tractor to theleft and pulled backwards to steerthe tractor to the right.

• The farther the tiller bar is moved,the tighter the turn.

• To change machine direction,operators rotate the tiller bar clockwisefor forward or counterclockwise forreverse. Neutral transmission positionis in the middle between the two.

• Low tiller bar efforts assure operatorcomfort during long shifts.

Power Turn with Differential Steering.With differential steering, large bladeloads can be smoothly maneuveredthroughout the turn. The operatormaintains precise control on slopes,around buildings, bridge abutments,trees or other obstacles.

• Differential Steering has the abilityto work in tight areas by providing a“Best in Class” tight turning radius.

• Steering modulation is finely tunedfor precise control in all turningapplications.

• Regardless of ground conditions,steering is consistent because poweris maintained to both tracks duringoperation.

Differential Steering System. A planetarydifferential turns the machine byspeeding up one track and slowing theother while maintaining full power toboth. The differential steering systemconsists of:

• Three planetary gear sets.

• A dedicated variable-displacementhydraulic pump.

• A bi-directional, fixed-displacementsteering motor.

• Heavy-duty steering drive gears.

• Two planetary gear sets (steering anddrive) make up the dual differential.

• A third planetary gear set, theequalizing planetary, resides in themain case and provides a maximum4.0 km/h (2.49 mph) speed differencebetween tracks.

Operation. When moving straight ahead,power flows through the transmissionpinion and bevel gear into the dualdifferential, transmitting equal,uninterrupted power to each finaldrive. While turning, power is shiftedto the outboard track speeding it up.The inboard track slows down toaccommodate a tighter turning radius.Forward ground speed remains thesame throughout the turn.

A D6N equipped with Differential Steering maintains power to both tracks while turning.Operators have control of machine speed, direction and steering with the tiller barcontroller, while maximizing production.

Differential Steering

1) Operator Station. State-of-the-artoperator station has reduced soundlevels, lower cab vibration, and increasedglass area.

2) Steering Control. Differential SteeringTiller Bar control system and the optionalFinger Tip Control (FTC) steeringsystem provide simultaneous one-handedsteering and transmission control.

3) Differential Steering Motor.Bi-directional hydraulic steering motoractivates the dual differential, whichchanges the speed of individual tracks.Slowing one track and increasing thespeed of the other track achieves asmooth power turn.

4) Power Shift Transmission. Provenplanetary design provides fast smoothspeed changes while distributing loadsover multiple gears for long life.

5) Final Drive. Caterpillar elevated finaldrives provide isolation from groundor work tool impact loads, extendingservice life.

6) Brake Assembly. Oil cooled largediameter brake disc provide longservice life.

7) Engine. Caterpillar 3126B HEUIengine meets worldwide engine exhaustemission regulations.

8) Radiator. Aluminum bar plate radiatorprovides excellent heat transfer.

9) Torque Converter. Efficient torqueconverter provides torque multiplicationfor increased drawbar pull and protectsthe drive train from shock loads.

Cab. The design is spacious andcomfortable to promote shift-longproductivity. Large glass window anddoor panels allow for excellent visibilityto the blade, rear and sides of themachine. Door and window seal designallows for a fully pressurized low dustcab. Acoustic headliner material, andsound suppression foam panels reducesound levels to 79 dB(A) accordingto the dynamic test procedure andconditions that are specified inISO 6394:1998.

Individual windshield wiper controlsare located in the front section ofthe headliner. The cooling systemis incorporated into the cab structureproviding good visibility to the rearof the machine.

Cat C500 Comfort Suspension Seat.Caterpillar C500 Comfort Series AirSuspended Seat is ergonomicallydesigned to support the operator invarious site conditions (optional).

• Seat is fully adjustable for maximumoperator comfort, support and reducedoperator fatigue.

• Seat cushion reduces pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

• A standard lumbar adjustmentprovides lower back comfort.

State-of-the-art operator station has reduced sound levels, low cab vibrations and excellentvisibility. The (optional) Caterpillar comfort series air suspension seat helps reduce operatorfatigue. Cab and air conditioning are standard.

Operator Station

Dash. The instrument panel, with easyto read analog gauges and warninglamps, keeps the operator aware ofany potential problems. All gaugesand readouts are easily visible in directsunlight. HVAC controls and vents areconveniently located on the dash toprovide climate control for the operator.Auto-shift and Auto-kickdown controlsare located within easy reach. Footpadskeep the operator stable and comfortablewhile working on slopes.

Electronic Monitoring System (EMS III).EMS III provides the operator instantfeedback on machine conditions andrecords performance data to helpdiagnose problems. It has flashablememory allowing system upgrades,as new technology and software becomeavailable. This system is compatiblewith Cat ET and CMS service tools.

EMS includes the following gaugesand readouts:

• Fuel level gauge

• Hydraulic oil temperature gauge

• Engine coolant temperature gauge

• Power train oil temperature gauge

• Engine oil pressure indicator

• Engine speed digital readout

• Transmission gear indicator

• Hour meter

• Odometer

Optional Finger Tip Control (FTC).Located to the operator’s left, finger tipcontrols provide one-handed operation.They control steering, machine directionand gear selection.

• Finger tip levers allow operators towork with precision in close areas.

• Push buttons control three speedforward/reverse gear selection.

Throttle Rocker Switch. A rockerswitch control activates high or low idlewith a touch of the finger. A deceleratorpedal gives the operator full control ofengine speed when the rocker switch isin the high idle position.

Work Tool Controls. Low effort pilotoperated hydraulic controls make theD6N easy to operate and provide sure,precise blade control with less operatorfatigue. Ergonomically shaped bladeand ripper controls provide increasedoperator comfort during long shifts.

AccuGrade Ready Option (ARO).The AccuGrade Ready Option (ARO)provides a factory installed on-boardplatform for the AccuGrade LaserSystem or the AccuGrade GPSinstallation. All of the changes requiredto the electrical system, hydraulic system,blade, and cab are incorporated into theARO. Mounting brackets added on theblade allow easy installation of the masts.Mounting brackets in the cab secure thein-cab display. Plug-in points inside thecab and on the front of the machine makeit easy to install electronic components.

Advantages. Current earthmoving andfine grading processes are labor intensive,dependent on manpower and instruments.Maintaining consistent grade betweenstakes is challenging, even for experiencedoperators. The AccuGrade Laser andGPS Machine Control and GuidanceSystems reduce labor requirements andhelp operators work to the design planby accurately cutting, filling and reducingmaterial cost.

Automatic Blade Control Feature.Automatic control of the blade’s liftand/or tilt, provides consistent accuracywith higher productivity by reducingblade control demands on the operator.Based on correction signals, a hydrauliccontrol valve automatically raisesor lowers the blade to maintain thecorrect edge elevation.

Applications. The AccuGrade Laserand the GPS systems are designed for awide range of construction earthmovingapplications requiring tight tolerancesand high productivity rates. Choosingwhether to use a Laser or GPS systemdepends on the job site requirements.

AccuGrade Laser Grade ControlSystem. The laser system is ideal forfine grading sites with flat, single slopeor dual slope surfaces such as industrial,commercial and residential building sites.

Laser System Components:

1) Laser Transmitter. An off-board lasertransmitter (sold separately) emits a thinbeam of light that rotates 360º, creatinga grade reference over the work area.

2) Laser Receivers. Digital laserreceivers mounted on telescopic mastsabove the blade’s cutting edge detectthe laser beam. During grade set-up,with the cutting edge placed at finishelevation, the electric mast automaticallypositions the laser receiver to within1.5 mm (0.06 in) of the center of thelaser beam. As the blade moves aboveor below finish grade elevation duringthe grading process, correctioninformation is sent to the in-cab display.One receiver is required for singledimension control (lift) and two receiversare required for two-dimensionalcontrol (lift and tilt).

3) Electric Masts. Blade mountedtelescopic masts are electrically adjustablefrom inside the cab. They position thereceivers above the cab for unobstructedlaser reception.

4) Laser In-Cab Display. The in-cabdisplay with easy to read grade indicatorand backlit elevation display showsthe operator all AccuGrade systeminformation. The in-cab display arrowsshow the blade’s position relative to gradeand indicate cut or fill requirementsof the work area. Push button operationallows the operator to easily switch frommanual mode for rough grading toautomatic mode for fine grading.

Advanced Laser and GPS technology improves operator accuracy, increases production andlowers operating costs.

AccuGrade Laser and GPS Machine Control Guidance Systems

AccuGrade GPS Control System. TheAccuGrade Global Positioning System(GPS) is the best solution when theconstruction site involves contours, ratherthan single or dual slope planes. A GPSsystem compares the blade position to athree-dimensional computerized job siteplan and signals the operator or hydraulicsystem to raise or lower the blade toachieve the design requirements.

GPS System Components:

GPS Base Station. An off-board GPSbase station uses Real Time Kinematic(RTK) to provide a repeatable highlyaccurate reference for the mobilemachines. One base station can supportan unlimited number of machines at thespecific jobsite.

GPS Receivers. Two GPS receivers aremounted on the blade. The rugged GPSreceiver combines a dual frequencyGPS receiver and antenna in a singleportable housing. The CAN basedarchitecture of the system allowseasy installation and removal of thecomponents. They receive positionsignals from the Global PositioningSystem and a correction from the basestation to determine the precise locationof the blade. This information iscommunicated to the in-cab display. GPS In-Cab Display. The in-cab display

provides real-time operating informationto the operator. Designed for simpleoperation, the 140 mm (5.5 in) colorLCD daylight readable display withkeypad allows operators to easily interfacewith the system. Settings and viewscan be easily configured according tooperator preference. The display isdesigned for reliable performance inextreme operating conditions includingshock, dust and moisture.

Weatherproof Design. All AccuGradecomponents are designed for dependableperformance in harsh environments.

Support. Caterpillar AccuGrade Laserand GPS systems are available at yourlocal Caterpillar Dealer.

Frame and Castings. The D6N case andframes are built to absorb high impactshock loads and torsional forces.Castings are strategically locatedwithin the frame to add additionalstrength. Caterpillar uses robotic weldingtechniques in the assembly of the caseand frames. This ensures quality andreliability throughout the structure.

Equalizer Bar. The pinned equalizer bargives the roller frames the ability tooscillate up or down to better matchground contours while providingmaximum traction and operator comfort.

Roll Over Protection. N-Series cabsupports have been stiffened. Stiffer cabsupports result in lower noise andvibration in the cab, providing the operatorincreased comfort.

• Stamped, rounded sheet metalcorners add strength.

Undercarriage Arrangements.

XL (Extra Long) arrangement

• Forward idler position providesmore track on the ground and tothe front of the tractor. It providesoptimal balance, superior tractionand blade control for finish grading.

• Long roller frame provides goodflotation in soft underfoot conditions.

LGP (Low Ground Pressure) arrangement

• Specially designed to work in softand spongy conditions.

• Wide track shoes, long track framesand a wider gauge increase trackcontact area and reduce groundpressure for excellent flotation.

Complete Guarding. Caterpillarundercarriages are designed with fulllength guarding on top of the track rollerframe. This prevents abrasive materialsfrom falling down on moving parts.

Roller Frames. Roller frames aretubular, to resist bending and twisting.

• Roller frames attach to the tractor bya pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar.

Recoil System. The recoil system issuperior because it is protected fromthe elements and maintained in asealed, oil-filled cavity for yearsof reliable service.

UndercarriageThe Caterpillar elevated sprocket undercarriage arrangements are designed for optimizedbalance and performance in fine grading to heavy dozing applications. Rugged design andproven structural manufacturing assure outstanding durability.

Caterpillar Blades. With superiormoldboard and 4-cell structure design,Cat bulldozer blades hold up to thetoughest job conditions. Our high-tensilestrength blades resist torsional bendingand deflection in tough applications.

• High-tensile strength, Cat DH-2™steel, cutting edges resist bending.

• DH-3™ steel end bits maximizeservice life.

Variable Pitch Power Angle and TiltBlade (VPAT). The VPAT blade givesthe operator the ability to hydraulicallyadjust the blade lift, angle and tilt fromthe operator’s station.

• Top corners of the blade are clippedfor better operator viewing area.(XL arrangement only).

Semi-Universal Blade (XL ArrangementOnly). Built for tough applicationswhere penetration and blade sideloading are important. The design ofthe SU blade makes it excellent foraggressive dirt penetration and loadingmaterials. The blade wings are designedfor superior load retention.

Foldable Blade (D6N LGP ArrangementOnly). Designed to conform withthe 3 m (9.8 ft) width transport limitwithout blade removal. Allows a0.30 m (1 ft) section on both ends ofthe blade to fold into transport position.

Multi-Shank Ripper. The multi-shankparallelogram ripper lets you chooseone, two or three shanks dependingon job conditions.

Rear Counterweight. Rear counterweightsare available through Custom Productsand can be used to help the machine’sbalance in severe applications such asbacking up slopes or heavy angle dozing.

Built-in Serviceability. Less servicetime means more working time.Major components are designed asmodules and most can be removedwithout disturbing or removing othercomponents.

Diagnostic Connector. Diagnosticconnector allows Caterpillar dealers toquickly troubleshoot the D6N or accessstored data with the use of ElectronicTechnician (Cat ET).

Product Link. This option allows thecustomer or dealer to obtain machinediagnostics and location from their offices.Product Link provides updates onservice meter hours, machine conditionand machine location, as well asintegrated mapping/route planning.

Electronic Monitoring System.The D6N features a flexible monitoringsystem that is easily upgraded by flashingsoftware rather than replacing the module,reducing parts cost. As technologychanges and new electronics and softwarebecome available, the monitoringsystem will allow the machine tobe easily updated.

Ecology Drains. Ecology drains providean environmentally safer method todrain fluids. They are included on theradiator, hydraulic tank and majorpower train components.
