What might help today's boys and young men
to lead longer, healthier lives?
• Many preventable health problems are affecting too many men
in the UK, with one in five dying under the age of 65.
• Amongst 20-24 year olds there are five male suicides for each
female suicide
• Many men have lower levels of health literacy than women and
are less likely to acknowledge illness or to seek help
(http://www.menshealthforum.org.uk/).
The survey would like to hear from any men aged 16+ who live in
England. Any assistance in reaching young men (16-24) is
particularly appreciated.
The survey is also available in a printable format.
To access the online survey, go to:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/menboyshealth
We gave you 11 statements and
under each of these we provided
several words for you to circle if
you agreed with them.

Patient-led survey results
The vast majority of replies confirm that patients have a
positive or very positive experience when using the
surgery.
Most of the additional comments provided by patients in
the free space on the form also confirmed this.
Early in September, 3 members of your Patient Group
are meeting with the Practice Manager and GP to
discuss what changes can be introduced.
We will report back next month……

League of Friends donations
The League of Friends of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has donated £9,853 to help patients with dementia, and
£14,740 for a new bladder scanner for the Acute Medical Unit.
Many patients with dementia benefit from increased mental stimulus
and reminiscence therapy. This can have a positive impact on reducing
anxiety and enhance their recovery and rehabilitation.
The donation has provided funding for special activity and reminiscence packs, including a RemPod which enables
volunteers to go out onto the wards to carry out activities with patients with dementia.
RemPods are literally pop up reminiscence rooms and work by turning any clinical care space into a
therapeutic & calming environment. No need for decoration
The Shropshire Women and Children’s Centre will open
at Princess Royal Hospital on 29th September
for:
• Women who need a consultant-led birth
• Gynaecology services requiring an overnight stay
• Children who need to stay overnight
• Children’s Oncology and Haematology care
Women having a low-risk birth will still be
able to chose to have their baby at home, at
one of the Midwife-led Units (at Oswestry,
Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, PRH or in
a Powys Midwife-led Units.
• The Community Living service, previously provided by
Shropshire Council, which helps adults with disabilities
live independently in their own home has been
transferred to Midland Heart.
• Community Living staff help people maintain their
independence by carrying out household tasks,
providing support with bills and budgeting, maintaining
family links and promoting leisure and community
activities.
• Midland Heart has a breadth of experience providing
care and support services in a wide range of settings.
