SPECIAL EDITION 2015:A Family’s Story, Doctor’s Day and Breast Health Golf Tournament

SusquehannaHealth.org/Giving

Even at first impression, Mary Lepley recognized there was something special about the people working on 5 West, Susquehanna Health’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Williamsport Regional Medical Center. Her father, Russell Waltz, was recovering there after a fall in his home. The goals for Russell, who has Parkinson’s disease, were to build strength and develop the skills he would need to regain independence.

“Susquehanna Health’s Inpatient Rehabilitation is like a dream. Everyone is just so respectful, courteous, supportive, compassionate and kind,” Mary says. “From the doctors, nurses, and nurse extenders to the occupational therapy, physical therapy, and transport staff, they are all dedicated people who truly care for their patients. The level of care was excellent.”

And when an unrelated emergency health problem arose, involving another member of Mary’s family, the staff had an opportunity to stand out even more.

Mary’s mother, Margaret, would visit her husband every morning during his rehabilitation to eat breakfast with him and help him shave. After one of those visits, while Margaret and Mary waited in the lobby for the valet to retrieve their car, Mary recognized her mother was showing symptoms of a stroke.

“The right side of her face was drooping, and she was a little off,” Mary says. “So I called out, ‘My mom is having a stroke!’”

Help arrived immediately. In fact, Dr. Harold Wright, one of Russell’s caregivers on the unit, was the first to respond to the hospital-wide emergency code. After an assessment, Margaret was admitted, having suffered from a mini-stroke.

During this incredibly stressful situation, the caregivers showed Mary and her siblings tremendous compassion and care.

“They were very concerned for our family and wanted to make sure we were all okay,” Mary recalls. “They just went over and above anything that they needed to do with caring comments and hugs. I filled out numerous forms for DAISY nursing awards because I wanted everyone to know how much I appreciated them going out of their way to help my family.”

Dr. Jahan Hashem, the Susquehanna Health physician overseeing Russell’s care, spent time talking to Mary and her siblings about their mother’s mini-stroke and helped them carefully consider the impact the news might have on their father’s progress.

“Dr. Hashem was just fabulous. She is a shining example of how a doctor should be,” Mary says, noting that Dr. Hashem and Dr. Wright even visited Margaret in the stroke unit.

Fortunately, Margaret was discharged after a few days, and Russell, a couple of weeks later. They were able to move to a new home with a single-level layout. In arranging for Russell’s discharge, Mary and her siblings were happy to have support from the staff, who helped them think through equipment they might need in their parents’ new home and also set up continuing therapy for their father.

“I’ve been places where people do their job very well, but they’re just doing their job,” says Mary. “The staff at Susquehanna Health went beyond that. They are dedicated to helping, and they truly care, not only for the patient but for everyone in that patient’s family.”

“They are all dedicated people who truly care for their patients. The level of care was excellent.” – Mary Lepley

For doctors, every waking hour of almost every day is committed to the well-being of others. They devote countless hours to each person who walks through their doors. For the fifth year, Susquehanna Health Foundation committed one very special day to honoring these everyday heroes. On March 30, National Doctor’s Day, handwritten notes of appreciation from patients of all ages were delivered to our physicians, reminding them of the difference they have made in the lives of many.

This year, 403 notes were submitted by our community to the physicians, advanced practice professionals, nurses and support staff. Not only did they show support in the form of notes of appreciation, but also by contributing more than $20,000.

The Foundation would like to specially recognize Dr. Edward Wyshock, Dr. Alexander Nesbitt and Dr. Lee Ciccarelli for receiving the most notes of appreciation.

To Dr. Charles Agbemabiese – “Thank you so very much for your care, time spent in explaining my particular cancer issues, helping me to be brave through the chemo treatments and what to expect, and to be strong and positive throughout my process. Your kind and gentle attentiveness has made you a very special doctor in our lives. Thank you!”

TOURNAMENT WINNERS

Overall Gross: Beth Emert and Sue Weller

Overall Net: Barb Buehler and Bonnie Bennett

On June 1, 2015, the Williamsport Country Club was adorned in shades of pink for the 14th Annual Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center Women’s Golf Tournament. This extraordinary ladies-only golf tournament raised more than $44,000 to enhance services at Susquehanna Health’s Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center. This year, 96 women took part in the event to support the Breast Health Center and women who have battled breast cancer.

Over the years, more than $650,000 has been raised for the Center by this event. Along with the financial support of the women who play, contributions and sponsorships are received from individuals, local businesses and community groups. A special thanks goes to our tournament host, the Stephen C., John W. and John C. Lundy Fund, and Corporate Sponsor, Ward Manufacturing, for their ongoing support of this tournament.

Proceeds from the 2015 tournament as well as previous tournaments allow the Breast Health Center to provide a comprehensive range of breast health services, including screenings and evaluations, digital mammography, breast ultrasound, minimally invasive breast biopsy, genetic testing and education. The Center also offers lymphedema management and physical therapy assessment for pain and fitness.

Dr. Angela Huggler, Susquehanna Health obstetrician and gynecologist, is one of a few surgeons in the country, and the first in northcentral Pennsylvania, to offer robotic-assisted, single-site hysterectomy and ovarian surgeries. These delicate, complex procedures are performed through a tiny incision in a woman’s navel. A single incision means less scarring externally and internally, minimizing complications.

“We’ve been performing robotic surgeries since 2013, but single-site takes it to the next level, offering a safe, less-invasive option with a better cosmetic result,” said Huggler.

The da Vinci® robot gives surgeons more precise views of the uterus, tissue and organs. It also provides greater dexterity, accurately translating the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements. Robotic surgery offers patients a shorter hospital stay, shorter recovery time and minimal pain.

Dr. Frank Yartz also offers multi-site, robotic gynecologic surgeries, including treatment for endometriosis, fibroid removal, fallopian tube removal, hysterectomy and ovarian surgeries.

For more information, visit www.SusquehannaHealth.org/Robotics.
