Summer 2015

In California, we are always talking about the BIG ONE. What have you done to prepare yourself and your family in the event of a strong earthquake or other disaster? No home should be without a Disaster Supplies Kit, which should contain items such as food, clothing, and first aid supplies.

Water is one of the most important components of a Disaster Supplies Kit. Households should store at least a three day supply of water for each person and pet within the household. Plan on storing at least one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation. Keep in mind that conditions such as sickness or hot weather may create a need for additional water. Keeping a supply of water at your workplace or in your car is also recommended.

For more information about preparing a Disaster Supplies Kit, visit www.ready.gov/kit.

NEW WEBSITE Provides Easy Way to File Helicopter Noise ComplaintsResidents can now file complaints regarding noisy helicopters using the County-wide Automated Complaint System website, www.heli-noise-la.com. The website utilizes a tracking system called Web Track, which aids the user in identifying the specific offending helicopter and its location. The Automated Complaint System is the result of over a year of discussions about increasing helicopter noise between helicopter industry representatives, community representatives, and the FAA. The information obtained by the Automated Complaint System will help to identify patterns and trends in helicopter operations and inform future efforts to develop and implement noise abatement measures.

Residents are encouraged to use www.heli-noise-la.com to report all helicopter noise complaints. If you do not have access to the website, you may call (424) 348-HELI (4354) to file your complaint.

RUBBER RESURFACINGLOMITA PARK GETS A FACELIFT In April, the City completed upgrades to the playgrounds at Lomita Park. All sand was removed and replaced with rubber surfacing in the areas around the children’s play equipment. The new rubber surfacing meets all of the current safety standards set by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) and will significantly reduce maintenance costs. Additionally; a new grass area and cement walkway was added on the east side of the Stephenson Center. The project was funded by the City’s Park Facilities Capital Improvement Fund. The final construction cost was $177,005.20 which was $7,609.56 below the project budget of $184,614.76. City staff prepared the plans and specifications; and performed the construction management of the project in house.

Summer 2015

Good News! The City of Lomita is experiencing a decrease in crime during the first few months of 2015. To begin the year, Robberies are down 67% from this time last year, Burglaries are down 75% and Reported Stolen Vehicles are down 28% from a year ago. The men and women of Lomita Sheriff’s Station are working hard to combat crime in the city, but they know that true success is a team effort. The Sheriff’s Department is grateful for the many community members who have taken time to “get involved” and report suspicious activity. Crime suppression and prevention truly is a partnership, and the Sheriff’s Department acknowledg-es the community’s vital role in helping to preserve a high quality of life in the city of Lomita. Though the news is good, we do know that crime tends to be cyclical and it may rise quickly if we become complacent. Therefore, we would like to pass along helpful tips we all can immediately take to “harden the target” and let criminals know they are not tolerated in our community.

“SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING”First and foremost, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings. Recognize what is normal in your neighbor-hood and what is not, and continue to report any suspicious activity to the Lomita Sheriff’s Station by calling 9-1-1 or for non-emergencies call (310) 539-1661.

PROTECT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: • Get to know your neighbors! • Be on the lookout for unidentified persons or vehicles

on your street. Note the time of day, along with de-scriptors of what you observe-e.g. color, make, mod-el, and license plates of vehicles, height, weight, age, clothing, and ethnicity of strangers.

• Have the Lomita Sheriff’s Station contact number pro-grammed into your phones.

• Keep ears and eyes open for unusual sounds or activi-ties at your neighbors’ homes.

• Be willing to take pictures of things you find out of the ordinary-your vigilance may provide crucial evidence in apprehending criminal activity.

• Do not be afraid to bother the Sheriff’s Department, they are depending on you to call!

PROTECT YOUR HOME: • Have friends or neighbors collect your newspapers and

mail if you leave town. The Lomita Sheriff’s Station

offers free vacation checks when you’re away for an extended period.

• When at home or away, keep all doors locked and win-dows secured with safety latches.

• Secure side gates and backyard access with padlocks at all times.

• Request identification from any stranger that comes to your door, including utility workers, and verify BEFORE they enter your home!

• NEVER let strangers into your home! • Monitor workers in your yard or in your home. • Keep valuables out of site, preferably secured in locked

cabinets or safes. • Use motion activated lighting to secure the perimeter

of your property. • Home alarms, dogs, signage, and trimmed landscaping

enhance protections for your property.

PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE: • Never leave your car doors unlocked, and never leave

any items of value visible inside your car. • Park in locked garages if at all possible. Do not leave

garage remotes in vehicles.

PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY: • Keep personal valuables in check-purses, phones, wal-

lets, and keys should be tucked away and secured. • Do not approach suspicious persons. If you find your-

self a victim of crime, do not chase the suspects. Get a description and license plate, and call the Sheriff’s Department.

• Do not post vacation plans on social media sites. • Do not place “family descriptor” stickers on your fam-

ily vehicles. Perpetrators can use the decals to identify the people in your household, sometimes even by age, gender, and names.

• Remind friends and visitors of these safety best prac-tices when they come over.

Remember: Residents, community members, City Officials, local businesses and the Sheriff’s Department are all vital stakeholders in this wonderful city, and we are all in this together to keep it safe! **Information provided by Lomita Station in conjunction with other safety literature.
